Alamo
Alamo (7" + booklet)
Cat: DSC0 3SG. Rel: 25 Feb 21
Combo Guarajeo - "Alamo" (2:08)
Hermanos Vargas - "Oye Mulata" (3:23)
Review: For their latest release, Mexican reissue specialists Discodelic take us back to Alajuela, Costa Rica, in the mid 1970s, and the sweltering, cross-cultural fusion works of the Vargas brothers and their short-loved Combo Guarajeo. Our pick of an extremely strong pair is A-side 'Alamo', a sweet and jangling take on Latin funk blended with distinctive Guaguanco and psychedelic soul influences. It's humid, colourful and classy, and original copies of the record it first featured on are almost impossible to find. There's a more straightforward, central American take on Afro-Cuban music on side B, which we think - but have yet to confirm - has never previously been released. It, too, is a treat for the ears.

Conjunto Media Luna/Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos - "Bogotokio" (feat Hydro As BNJ) (3:20)
Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos/Conjunto Media Luna - "Cumbia Teriyaki" (3:30)
Review: Conjunto Medialuna's latest album on Little Beat More is a direct trip to the heart of Bogota's rich cumbia scene. The record blends traditional rhythms with psychedelic influences driven by the Colombian accordion and ecstatic percussion that is so strongly associated with this style. These are two of the jams from it, but frankly you should also check out the full LP. It's a tribute to the guacharaca and the lively street parrandas where each song explores new interpretations of classic sounds. Featuring collaborations with N. Hardem, Mismo Perro, Son Rompe Pera, MC Hydro and Japanese-Latin percussionist Muupy, Noches de Medialuna, it transcends cultural boundaries and joins the dots between traditional and modern urban Latin music which is now so hugely popular around the world.

Fenerbahce Heat (1:41)
Review: The Excursions crew have prepped another solid release right here, a bunch of glorious Turkish funk edits by the mysterious Halal Cool J. We love the name and all, but it's the cuts that we're vibing too, especially seeing as we're big into our 70s Turkish culture here at Juno HQ; just take a look at our charts and you'll find everyone from Baris Manco, to Erkin Koray and Erkut Tackin. From "Visne Nektari" to "Fenerbache Heat", you'll be glad to know that gear is 100% club-proof and utterly in line with the quality of that 70s material... it just has a little more oomph to its beats now.

Epiphany (Yoruba Soul remix) (6:08)
Review: They may not have released many records, but samba/soul/jazz fusionists the Han Litz group have been mainstays of the Dutch scene for a decade. Here they return with a wonderfully breezy, samba-soaked collection of cuts that's remarkably their first ever outing on wax. The A-side begins with two warm, afternoon fresh tracks that sound like authentic Brazilian samba jams from the 1970s, before Litz and company indulge in a little flute-heavy jazz ("Preludia") and Afro-tinged broken beat/jazz fusion ("Yemaya Olodo"). Also impressive is closing cut "Epiphany", which has been transformed by Yoruba Soul man Osunlade into a sumptuous shuffle through deep house/samba fusion complete with Flamenco style Spanish guitar solos.

Rachid Baba Ahmed - "House Rai Music" (9:57)
Review: Bongo Joe has put together a fine second volume of its Maghreb K7 Club: Disco Singles series here with Hanini and Rachid Baba Ahmed both appearing. Hanini's first is 'Allaoui', a brilliantly ass-wiggling rhythm with organic flutes, shuffling percussion and catchy rhythms that are drenched in the warmest sun and alive with whistles. Then comes 'Mel'ha Marghbouna' which is a vocal vibe with hints of Chic's funky disco and expressive rhymes. On the flip is Rachid Baba Ahmed's 'House Rai Music' which is a raw and full of coarse hits and jumbled percussive beats.

Harmony Cats' Theme (3:28)
Review: The Brazil45 series has always been pure gold and now come a pair f beauties from Harmony Cats, a vocal quintet-turned-trio from Sao Paulo known for their disco-era hits. Harmony Cats' 'Theme' from 1976 is their most recognised track outside Brazil and is inspired by Rhythm Heritage's Barretta's Theme with its spacey breakbeats, lush vocals and percussive flair, all of which have made it a true crossover classic. On the B-side, 'Seja Como Nos (De Pe No Chao)' delivers an exuberant Brazilian twist on The Jacksons' 'Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)'- it's a guaranteed floor-filler with radiant disco energy and Harmony Cats' signature vocal style.

Harmony Cats' Theme (3:25)
Review: There have now been almost 100 hundred entries on Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and as far as we can tell not one of them has been a dud. This time they opt for a big and airy soul sound from The Harmony Cats. They were an all female vocal quintet that hailed from Sao Paulo and banded together in 1976. Most prolific in the disco days, the b-side here is their best known tune outside of Brazil. It's got a cosmic breakbeat and light vocals that soar to the skies. A-side 'Seja Como Nos (De Pe No Chao)' is a just as sweet sound that transports you to Latin America in an instant.

Review: A big hello to new Montreuil-based label Mother I'd Like to Funk, which also wins our award for the best new label name of 2022. The 7" it kicks off with ain't too shoddy either. Harri Stojka Express's 'What A Funky Night' is a long-awaited reissue that was first released in 1983 by the Austrian producer and guitarist. It is some irresistible boogie-disco-funk goodness that came from the leftfield as he had previously dropped mostly jazz-rock-fusion-orientated records. On the flip side is a brilliant reggae and soul fusion that's all about the lovely green herb.

Review: If the Balearic Islands are a physical place, then Balearic music is certainly the foremost concept in its adjacent ideaspace - it seems as long as Balearic music exists, there can be no further cultural exports from the Archipelago. Have A Nice Day are a mysterious collective of DJs and producers inspired by said sonic throughline, and they're determined to tap into it for as long as it exists. They describe their music as 'Baleariche', a fusion of Balearic and Italo disco with a touch of kosmische and psychedelia. The first in their Baleariche Grammophon series exemplifies this, with two polar tracks coming as blends of heatstricken Latin guitar, jubilant handclaps and and flowingly happy pair of mixes overall.

Divagacao 6/8 (7:31)
Review: While best known for their funk and soul reissues, Dynamite Cuts do frequently dig deeper and look further afield for musical inspiration. They're at it again here, offering up a lavishly packaged "45" featuring two killer cuts from Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Hector Costita's jazz-funk/jazz-fusion album 1981 (which, you guessed it, was first released in 1981). A-side 'Avessos' is warming, gentle and groovy, with Costita's jaunty sax motifs rising above a samba-jazz beat, restless triangle percussion and some seriously toasty electric piano lines. 'Divagacao' is a more up-tempo nd rhythmically interesting affair that reminded us of Azymuth while also boasting some genuinely dazzling sax solos.

Sekele I Like It (Baptman & Betino Philly Vibe mix) (6:21)
Feet On The Ground (Vas Moody rework) (4:41)
Review: A couple of years back, Rafael Top Secret - a selector known for digging deep for inspiration - delivered a tidy re-edit of "Sekele I Like It", a previously little-known Afro-boogie cut by French artist Robert "Bobby" Helms. Copies of the 1980 album it came from, Lay Down, Girl, now go for serious money, prompting this licensed reissue. Helms' brilliant, horn-totin' original is accompanied by another cut from that album, "Feet On The Ground" - a straight-up disco affair - and two new flipside remixes. Baptman and Betino's "Philly Vibe" mix of "Sekele I Like" is a largely instrumental interpretation that includes some killer electric piano solos, with Vas Moody's "Feet On The Ground" remix taking that track in a tightly-wound dub disco direction.

Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Review: Berlin's Matasuna label welcomes a debut appearance from Afrobeat-flavoured outfit Heroes Of Limbo. We're not certain on where this band originally hail from, but they've got the vibe down perfectly on this smoking hot 7". "Madchester Woman" skits and scatters with loose in-the-room drums, a sassy brass section and sweet high life guitar licks. "White Noise" brings Clair Fallows on board for a strong vocal turn that turns the temperature up. This is soul-stirring Afrobeat in the mould of the originators, executed with respectful accuracy and played with passion.

Try Again (4:12)
Review: In the time that passed between their fine 2019 debut on Matsuana Records, 'Madchester Woman', and the release of their sophomore single, last year's 'Don't Sweat The Technique on Mocambo', Heroes of Limbo clearly recorded a lot of material - hence this relatively speedy sequel. Like the duo's previous material, the two tracks showcased here blur the boundaries between funk, highlife and Afrobeat. A-side 'Watch Out Now' is a languid, low-slung treat, with heavy Afrobeat horns, snaking solos, effects-laden Hammond organ and jazzy guitars reclining over a shuffling breakbeat and warming bassline. The pair gently raises the tempo and temperature on B-side cut 'Try Again', with more urgent horns and low-register sax solos weaving in and out of a more tropical-sounding rhythm track.

Based in New Orleans, he makes music inspired not only by his love of club music, but also sounds and styles from around the world. This debut neatly reflects these disparate influences, offering up vibrant tracks that defy easy categorization. Check first the twisted lead lines, pulsing sub-bass, sweaty piano stabs and pots-and-pans percussion of "Sun Spell", before admiring the densely layered breakbeats and West African drums of "Palimpest". "6 O'Clock Rock" is a woozy and warming shuffle where calypso percussion, hazy strings and cut-up vocal samples make an impression, while "Everyday Break" is a luscious chunk of sun-up goodness for dancers who like it warm and breezy.

Up top Honny & The Bees live up to their sweet name on "Psychedelic Woman," a hypnotic, insistent mid-tempo bell-bashing, string twanging nodder that really arrests when the big harmonic chorus heaves in. Review: "Ofel I" marks the belated return to action of 13-piece Afrobeat ensemble Hoodna Orchestra, whose previous release - the hot-to-trot "Alem", made in cahoots with Ethiopian guest musicians - dropped way back in September 2017. The headline attraction is undoubtedly A-side "Ofel I", a low-slung chunk of horn-heavy '60s psych goodness that sounds like it could have been plucked from the soundtrack to a particularly trippy and experimental British spy movie. There's a similar feel to the admittedly more exotic B-side "Breathe", a killer cut that appears to have been inspired - in part, at least - by dusty Turkish psych-funk.

They've apparently spent much of the last 12 months working with Ethiopian musicians, with the fruits of their collaborative labours due for release over a series of tidy 7" singles. This one sees them working with singer and poet Demisu Belete, whose superb vocals rise above the band's brilliant, laidback Afrobeat backing on A-side "Alem". Review: Yet another top release from the Soundway imprint, with the international disco and funk focus shifted to Guyana for the label's first 12 inch in over two years! Here they present two outstanding South American disco cuts from Eddie Hooper, more commonly known for his Soca output but on brilliantly soulful form here. "Pass It On" comes filled with warmth via the primitive synths and undulating Rhodes riffs that characterise the melody, whilst crisp insistent percussion and Hooper's distinctive vocals provide the life affirming drive. The flipside counterpart "Tomorrow's Sun" has end of night written all over it with a heavy reliance on organ dramatics, sparkling harp melodies and the hugging groove a perfect backdrop to Hooper's soothing tone.

Review: Just the way we like it; contemporary and obscure. First recorded in an indeterminate year in the 1970s but only released for the first time in 2015, Hot Stuff Band's 'Juju Man' and 'Big Splash' are twin slices of elusive yet legendary Brazilian funk. Better known by the name Azymuth, the band come from an era wherein the South American nations were not too fussed about the persona of singers, and were more concerned with how hot and tight the instrumentals could be. First appearing as part of the compilation Secao Ritmica, the two tracks from this sadly lesser-known alias now get a reissue with the band's original vouchers, Atemoya Records.

Review: Some expansive, cinematic, orchestral spiritual jazz for you here, from the trio of talents that Fumio Itabashi, Kuniyiki and Henrik Schwarz. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Over the last three years, DJ/producer Mimmo "MoBlack" Falcone has turned MoBlack Records into arguably the World's leading label for African house music. Defected clearly thinks so, because the label has decided to put out this EP featuring tracks from remixes from Falcone and some of his regular collaborators. On side A Falcone joins forces with Armonica to deliver two sparkling, rubbery, positive and heavily electronic reworks of Fela Kuti classic 'International Thief Thief'. Both hit the spot, though it's the Dub, with its extended vocal breakdown and trippy effects, that floats our boat. Over on the flip we're treated to two versions of MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrick Schwarz hook-up 'Chagu': a bouncy Afro-tech take from Schwarz and a warmer, deep Afro-house interpretation by Falcone.
