Review: Wah Wah presents another acid folk delicacy from The Village Thing catalogue. 'The Sun Also Rises' was recorded by Graham Hemingway (vocals, guitar)
and Anne Hemingway (vocals, dulcimer, glockenspiel, vibes, percussion). They were occasionally joined by John Turner (string bass, finger-picked & with a bow)
and Andy Legget (whistle on one of the songs). It features an amazing tapestry of acid folk sounds with great male/female vocal harmonies. On the sources of this
record you will hear echoes of The Incredible String Band, Comus, C.O.B and Tir Na Nog, but of course delivered with the own personality of this Cardiff duo, very
hippie sounding with a very trippy atmosphere. The album was originally released in 1970, and our reissue will include one bonus track not on the original release,
taken from a 1972 Village Thing sampler. Comes in beautifully reproduced artwork in nice matt finish. Not only a top listener, but also a beautiful addition to your
acid folk collection.

Review: Having fulfilled his reggae ambitions, Snoop returns to the source with this incredible homage to the original funk that hip-hop spawned from. Referencing Bootsy Collins with his new moniker, he's teamed up with one of Stones Throw's most consummate funk purveyors Dam Funk. We don't need to tell you the result; authentic, sexy and smooth, it's a time machine that whisks us back to the late 70s and early 90s. From the dreamy textures and overdubbed harmonies of "1Question?", the shiny proto-R&B mothership moment "Do My Thang", everything about this screams class. Timeless funk made by two masters, we guarantee this will sound just as hot in 10 or 20 years.

Review: Sol Set is a Detroit-based collective, an amalgamation of composers, musicians, artists and vocalists brought together by producer John Beltran, whose new label All Good Music chooses its debut album for its inaugural release. John Beltran and Shane Donnelly preside over seven sumptuous and confident slices of modern, sub-kissed soul and Latin sure to put a smile on anyone's face, even those of us faced with an altogether more British summer. Influences range from the Steve Wonder-style double vocals of 'Bliss Mode' to the South American 'Rhythm of the Sun', which echoes the beach bum haziness of Jorge Ben, but the vibe remains joyful and skillfully yet effortlessly executed throughout. Gorgeous.

Review: A new spate of Tele Music library classics reissues from the 70s houses this one from 1976. Once more, legendary composer and drummer Pierre Alain Dahan hears his timely work reissued - this time in collaboration with his eternal guitar colleague Slim Pezin, a many-timed collaborator with Dahan. Contrasting to Dahan's many more experimental works, such as the prototypical 'Rhythmiques' album (which is far more out-there, almost primordial-sounding) 'Neo Rhythmiques' is an absolute killer of scorching, uptempo jazzy soul-funk, demonstrating what humanity as whole has achieved since, by harnessing said rhythmic primordium for its own funky ends.

Review: Never Gonna Leave You is a rarity from the esteemed Brunswick label, credited to the sevensome US disco-soul-funk band active throughout the 1970s and beyond. With production by disco maestro Tony Valor, arrangements by Chi-Soul legend Eugene Record, and a new mix by the great Tom Moulton - not to mention an instrumental accompaniment from Valor's highly esteemed Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra - this 1976 classic is a cornerstone of stone-cold proto-disco, having already been reissued on CD in Japan multiple times since its creation. For its very first vinyl reissue, Never Gonna Leave You is lent the Real Gone treatment, delivering a newly r-rubbed version of the Chi-Lites' 'Stoned Out of My Mind' and delivering instant soul salvation.

Review: James Gallardo & Sol released their collaborative debut album in 1975 in a burst of bright colour and next-level musicianship. There's a fiery, rockist spirit running through the over driven guitar cartwheeling through "Maranatha", but there's equal space for measured grooves and Gallardo's expressive horn playing. Mellower moments like "Patrice" let in a more soulful side of the project, while "El Que Se Fue" nods to the Latin roots of Sol. Expansive, bold and inventive, this is a treasure for jazz funk heads, marking the first official repress since the first copies slipped out many moons ago.

Review: Crippled Dick Hot Wax invites for a dance with the nearly lost recordings, also been soundtrack for Jess Franco's cult films "Vampyros Lesbos", "She Kills In Ecstasy" and the "The Devil Came From Akasava", Crippled Dick Hot Wax presents a very special and delicious re-release: The songs from the hard to find LPs "Psychedelic Dance Party" and "Sexadelic" were written in 1969 and released in 1970. They were composed by Manfred Hubler and Siegfried Schwab. Sexadelic Dance Party is a compilation with the best titles. The musical background placed within red-light swing, sleazy psychedelic and strip ballads. Various wild parties around the soundtrack were celebrated after the popular release in 1995. The parties took place in many places in Germany and USA and the cult about the Jess Franco movie increased.

Jazz collectors rejoice, as this incredibly rare and sought after 1975 release is finally getting its first western release. Previously a Japan-exclusive with soaring resale prices, now everyone can enjoy the bumping bass and clean brass of this Jazz-rock classic. The instrumentation is as crisp as they come from the very first note on 'Painted Paradise' with its head bumping saxophone solos. Inagaki's Soul Media crafted a soulful masterpiece at the height of Japan's obsession with American music in the 70s, with this record even including a cover of Kool & The Gang's 'Funky Stuff', turning the disco-jazz into a slow funk-filled jam. A much-needed repressing of a must-listen record.

An enduring, pioneering fusion of jazz, funk, soul and rock - with influences from Herbie Hancock, James Brown and Santana - the album features some of the best and most acclaimed Japanese musicians of the time, enlisting the talent-wares of Hiromasa Suzuki on keyboards, Akira Ishikawa on drums and Takeru Muraoka on sax. Now on a unique clear pink vinyl, it too could be yours.

Review: Little is documented about the creators of 1975's Funky Stuff. Jiro Inagaki and his band's legacy is almost entirely musical, devoid of the personal details that often accompany jazz musicians. To understand this album, it must be placed within its cultural context. Japan's jazz scene, one of the largest per capita, has faced accusations of imitation and unoriginality. However, Inagaki's work, particularly in the late '60s and early '70s fusion era, defies these stereotypes. Inagaki's genre-blending began with 1970's Head Rock, less experimental than Bitches Brew but equally dynamic. By 1975, Inagaki had embraced funk, culminating in Funky Stuff. The album, laden with rich bass-lines, wah-wah pedals, and layered percussion, opens with the danceable 'Painted Paradise'. Pianist Hiromasa Suzuki, who wrote most tracks, shines, especially on the melancholic 'Breeze' and the bossa-nova 'Gentle Wave'. Covers like Kool & The Gang's 'Funky Stuff' and Wayne Henderson's 'Scratch' are highlights. Funky Stuff joyously engages with funk's rhythms, making it a delightful hidden gem.

Review: A long-time-coming reissue of a lesser known live funk album, showcasing the deft J-funk stylings of the genre's foremost legend Jiro Inagaki on the A - as well as lesser-spotted curios from fellow artists Taeko Morino, Eddy Clan and Akira Ishikawa on the B. Packed with futuristic synths and boasting a rather dry, untainted sound, we're most impressed by Morino's slow Anglophone ballad, which we'd describe as most haunting and mesmerising.

Review: Japanese jazz drummer Takeshi Inomata is a little-spoken-about figure in the jazz-rock scene; The Japan Jazz All Stars alumn, We 3 trio leader and Rhythm Clinic Center founder has made well over 300 recordings in his career - this being the third in a year-long trilogy enthusiastically and successively released under the Sound Limited name alongside Kimio Mizutani and Shigenori Kamiya - amongst others - largely influenced by European musicians like Donovan and The Beatles. A notable and funny inclusion is 'London Bridge is Falling Down', a quite literal jazz groove cover interpolating the famous nursery rhyme. Opening track 'Something' is a cracking piece of relaxing jazz, nothing eye-popping, just some glossy, well-played, easy listening. 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' is a fast-paced funk cut with striking psychedelic guitars over a frantic flute line - the project showed Inomata's vision for a more approachable and instantly catchy jazz rock that still retained a lot of character and left, evidently, lots of room for experimentation.

Review: Headed up by Benin-born Kaleta - a guitarist who has previously worked with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Lauryn Hill - Super Yamba Band is a New York collective whose decidedly psychedelic fusions of Afrobeat, Highlife and Afro-funk have been getting rave reviews. "Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. With Kaleta's variously fuzzy, sun-kissed and flash-fried licks to the fore, the band trips its way through nine mostly dancefloor-friendly workouts that wrap heavy funk instrumentation, rousing horns and Afrobeat style organ riffs around polyrhythmic drums that recall the distinctive swing of Tony Allen. It's a stylistic blend that guarantees results, as the sheer volume of highlights triumphantly proves.

Review: When the two friends formed Malone & Barnes and Spontaneous Simplicity (named after the tune by Sun-Ra, whose band
Barnes regularly appeared with when in Washington, DC) the collaboration yielded 'Freedom Serenade' (Ubiquity), an album
of super spacey and spiritual jazz funk. Released in limited quantity in 1976, on their Humpin' International label, this rare and
underground album bears the hallmarks of contemporaries like the Blackbyrds, the Mizell Brothers and DC neighbors Oneness
of Ju-Ju. 'Warp Ten' features a solo battle between Barnes and trumpeter Curtis Pope (of the Isley Bros and Wilson Pickett bands).
Songs such as 'Moonstruck' and 'Journey To The Stars' are DJ-friendly futuristic funk tracks with a sci-fi flavored nod to peers,
Funkadelic and Parliament.
