Boogie
Boogie (limited 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7082. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Boogie (4:52)
  2. You've Just Been Bitten (5:23)
Review: Dynamite Cuts is in a real purple patch right now and keeping that up for the London label is John Barelt. Here, two cuts of his previously released on the Perception label get a first ever 7" vinyl pressing. They come from his hard to find and eponymously entitled album from 1971 and are packed with classic and unknown drum samples. First up is 'Boogie', a steamy number with fantastic Rhodes chords in the background while busy guitar riffs vie for attention up front. The rhythm section flows as smooth as silk and make this a seductive number indeed. On the reverse, 'You've Just Been Bitten' is a vocal cut that teases and pleases.

Cat: FNR 145. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. The Blassics - "Flowman Break" (3:40)
  2. Tatasomba - "Kalebaidoscope" (4:37)
Review: The Blassics is a multi-member collective known for the excellent blend of jazz, funk, afro and soul across a series of standout records over the last decade. They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

Out In The Rain
Cat: BB 104. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Out In The Rain (3:50)
  2. Out In The Rain (version) (3:55)
Review: Guillaume Metenier is Booker Gee, a master edit maker and studio wizard who has made his name with some much wanted work on Lucien Entertainment as well as more than once on this label. His second release this month is a trip into the world of ska. 'Out In The Rain' is a perfect sweet spot between rolling reggae rhythms, warm organ chords and skipping kicks. The mood is sensuous and inviting as Gee blends sweet soul with playful funk. The version is only a subtle rework, resining plenty of the charm and allure of the original.

Stone Born Country Boy
Cat: PT 9910. Rel: 19 Nov 20
  1. Big Jim Cartwright - "Stone Born Country Boy" (2:49)
  2. Big Jim - "Stone Born Country Boy" (3:02)
Review: There's not an awful lot of information about Perfect Toy's latest killer funk reissue, which appears to gather together two different recordings of 'Big' Jim Cartwright's sole single, 'Stone Born Country Boy'. At least two original pressings of the obscure, extremely hard-to-find single exist, with Cartwright recording slightly different versions each time. On this essential reissue, the (probably later) A-side version is the superior recording; tighter, heavier and blessed with female backing vocals, it's a fiery chunk of country funk from the point when the style was starting to diverge from rhythm and blues. The marginally longer flipside take is most likely an earlier recording; fuzzier and more raucous, it is closer in tone to purist rhythm and blues.

Feast Of Funk
Feast Of Funk (hand-numbered clear vinyl 7" limited to 95 copies)
Cat: BS 017. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Merry Christmas (3:37)
  2. Santa's Coming (3:24)
Review: What could be more exciting for the funk lover in your life (whether that's you or someone else) than an insanely limited-edition, festively themed "45" from famously reliable party-starter DJ Tron and his regular vocalist Luana? If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Only 95 of these hand-numbered sevens were ever pressed, so act fast if you want to grab a copy.

Fatbackin'
Fatbackin' (limited 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7081. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. The Fatback Band - "Fatbackin'" (3:31)
  2. Dizzy Gillespie - "Matrix" (4:06)
Review: The Dynamite Cuts crew serve up another scorching 45 here with two legends taking one side a piece. Both of these tracks are making their first ever appearance on vinyl here, the first being by the funk pioneers The Fatback Band. Their 'Fatbackin' is a rare groove classic that has long got b-boy's excited and brims with energy. Flip it over and you'll find 'Matrix' by jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie - famous for his humungous cheeks once he starts playing. It's a massive tune that has been sampled endlessly by the hip-hop world and has a sweet jazz-funk groove that'll make you move.

Tropical Pressure Vol 1
  1. Guy One - "Bangarre Tomme" (6:25)
  2. Faith Mussa - "Ngoma" (4:38)
  3. Guided Souls - "Freedoms Light" (4:48)
  4. Orchestre Les Mangelepa - "Kanemo" (No Nation dub) (5:33)
Review: The cursed global pandemic may have put paid to this year's Tropical Pressure festival in Cornwall, but thanks to this first compilation style EP from its' new offshoot label, we can now recreate the event's humid, colourful musical vibe in our own homes. The selections are naturally top-drawer, with the heavy tropical Afro-funk of Guy One's EP-opening 'Bangarre Tomme' brilliantly setting the tone. Faith Mussa impresses with the deliciously positive and sun-kissed 'Ngoma' - all rubbery bass, JuJu style guitars and bouncy beats - while Guided Souls get hot and heavy on the raw and fuzzy Afro-house of 'Freedoms Light'. We'd also recommend checking out the 'No Nations Dub' of 'Kameno' by No Nations Orchestra, a sun-bright slab of audio sunshine rich in glistening guitars and punchy horns.

Cat: 5BB 024. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. The High & Mighty - "Dirty Decibels" (3:57)
  2. Simon Haseley - "Hammerhead" (4:33)
Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

Let It Go (7")
Cat: BBR 017. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Let It Go (vocal) (3:30)
  2. Let It Go (instrumental) (3:30)
Review: A Lord Funk and Samm Culley collaboration is always going to be something to get excited about and so it proves on this one from French label Boogie Butt. Each of these artists has oodles of experience spanning multiple decades, with Culley being an R&B, soul and funk keyboard player who has been in various key bands. Here he harks back to the 70s with super tight drum funk and rugged instrumentals recalling the likes of The Fatback Band and Hot Chocolate. The breaks are killer for the dancers, too, and on the flip, Lord Funk serves up his rework while Samm jumps on bass to do his inimitable thing.

We've Gotta Find A Way Back To Love
  1. We've Gotta Find A Way Back To Love (3:08)
  2. Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right (3:24)
Review: Since establishing their dusty-fingered Pressure Makes Diamonds imprint last year, Gary Johnson and Graham Luckhurst have yet to put a foot wrong. Having previously reissued two ultra-obscure records by Azwon and Babalu & His Headhunters, they've now turned their attention to a slightly better-known single from Freda Payne. Her version of Holland-Dozier-Holland number 'We've Got To Make a Way Back To Love' was initially released back in 1973 and sees her brilliantly delivering the trio's lovelorn lyrics over a bongo-rich two-step soul backing track that's as musically detailed and emotive as they come. As it did back in the 1970s, the track comes backed by the sweeter, more orchestrated 'Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right' - another sublime Holland-Dozier production influenced by the slick Philly Soul sound.

Fulton County Line (7" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: ZP 53BLACK. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Fulton County Line (4:48)
  2. Riding High (5:16)
Review: This is the first time this particular disco gem has ever been on a 7" vinyl. It comes from Tommy Stewart's self-titled 1976 album, one of the most revered and in demand disco records ever. It was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia and became such a hit because of how far musical legends Marlin McNichols, Bill Wright and Tommy Stewart managed to take the super funky disco production (clue - way ahead of its time.) 'Fulton County Line' and 'Riding High' and two fo the glorious album highlights, with lush arrangements, soaring strings and funky bass all getting the emotions flowing as well now as they did first time around.

This Is A Song (reissue)
  1. This Is A Song (3:02)
  2. Ease It To Me (2:21)
Review: TRAMP Records' continual quest to unearth and reissue seriously rare slabs of funk continues via a fresh pressing of the sole single from Shirlean Williams and the Tempo's Band, a South Carolina outfit who were briefly active in the mid 1970s. Licensed directly from Tempo's Band main man Nolla Mainor, 'This is The Song' is a heavyweight slab of deep funk brilliance laden with punchy horns, energetic drums, heady Hammond organ chords and a fine lead vocal from Williams. Almost as good is flipside 'Ease it to Me', a similarly styled number notable for some seriously good extended funk breaks, drum solos and sweat-soaked solos. Both cuts are fine examples of raw, mid-'70s funk of the kind that usually detonates dancefloors when dropped at the right time.

Review: These seven tracks of scuzzy, lo-fi indie are ingrained with the sound of London streets. The trio of musicians behind it - guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto - draw on all their 25-year plus experiences of working in multiple genres to serve up blues and rock collisions, psyched-out indie trips, gauzy, summer of love sonics and breakbeat and jazz fusions. The tracks were recorded with minimal overdubs making for an expansive and all consuming sound where the driving rhythm sections do the heavy lifting while the swirling sonics up top take things to a higher level. It might be deeper and darker than you'd expect of this band, but what else would you expect of a record made during this most weird of years.

Review: First released back in 2015, the third album from Bjorn Wagner's break-fired revivalist funk combo, the Mighty Mocambos, has been given the reissue treatment on vibrant red vinyl. It's arguably the most notable of the eight-piece band's full-length excursions, primarily because it features an impressive cast-list of guest rappers, singers and musicians (Shawn Lee even plays autoharp on side two joint 'Cat Fight'). Musically, it's a boisterous and party-starting affair, with Wanger and co flitting between breakdancer-friendly instrumental funk, 1960s style vocal soul ('In The Dark', with Nicola Richards, is a highlight), and largely up-tempo, club-ready numbers featuring singing and rapping from the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Charlie Funk and Donald D.

Review: Since launching in 2016, Mr Bongo's Record Club compilation series has provided three essential volumes of personal favourites - many obscure and hard-to-find - selected by the label's in-house team of crate-digging DJs. Volume four is naturally every bit as essential as its' predecessors, offering an enticing mixture of Brazilian, African, soul, funk and disco with not a suspect selection in sight. This time round, they've chosen to include contemporary music as well as dusty old gems, with highlights including Kenny Dope's delicious rework of the soul-jazz positivity of 'Throwing Stones' by James Reese and the Progressions, the fast version of Ze Roberto's 1973 MPB classic 'Lotus 72D' and the samba-folk wonder that is Matthew Tavares' 2019 gem 'Self Portrait'.
