Berro E Sombaro (Record Store Day RSD 2023)
Berro E Sombaro (3:07)
Never Gonna Give You Up (7" edit) (4:21)
Review: Washington DC group Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers have got a real belting Latin tune on their hands here with 'Berro e Sombaro'. It's a tune that has been sampled many times over the years though you will be hard-pushed to find an original version anywhere. It was originally the last tune on Chuck's Bustin Loose album from 1979 and soon became a go-to funk track with a big impact that also saw it make a mark on the 80s rare groove scene. On the flipside here is an exclusive 7" edit of 'Never Gonna Give You Up', which was composed by Gamble & Huff composed and has never been on 45 rpm before.

Review: If you've heard the Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (1978?-?1982: selected by Junior Santos) compilation you will know that Cristina Camargo's 'Moral Tem Hora' is one of the standout tunes from it. It is a perfect fusion of Latin flair, Brazilian disco and jazz funk magic that has fat bass riffs and lots of bright chords and busy percussion next to a classic vocal. On the flip things get slower, sentimental and all loved up on 'Minas Do Rei Salomao' which his a perfectly steamy jam for those hot afternoons under the sun.

Sorrow Tears & Blood (4:20)
Review: Here comes the first single from the upcoming Chico Mann album "Double Life". The acclaimed producer and guitarist is back with his first work since 2013, and is in fine fettle. Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. Reeves it and you'll get a psyched out cover of Fela Kuti's 'Sorrow Tears & Blood' with a hooky groovy and powerful underlying message.

What A Night (4:38)
Review: Veritable mind-readers, the anonymous artist Comb Edits have us clairvoyantly sussed. They know we feel it. Coming through the Norwich-based I Travel To You label for their third release, this release amounts to two edits of older songs whose origin, we're ashamed to admit, we can't track down. Honest, live and funky, the tracks span two sides of the same coin, with 'I Know You Feel It' a convincing slo-mo funk edit, and 'What A Night' a cosmick, reverb-laden freakout version of a Japanese obscurio.

Conjunto Raza - "African Dream" (3:15)
The Scepters - "Message" (3:50)
Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Review: DJ S is a Greek producer who is one of the best editors around, with his own singular downbeat sound. On his latest release, he joins the Too Slow To Disco Edits series with four tracks of smooth and groovy disco edits. He reworks some classic and obscure gems from the late 70s and early 80s, adding his signature touch of warmth and soul. From the funky groove of 'Groovin', to the low slung sexiness of 'Sweet Love' (2022 version) and the absolutely romantic 'U' - DJ S delivers a delightful EP that will make you want to dance and chill.

Forward Motion (3:53)
Review: The Ellis Hall Group's upcoming 7" release, 'Music, Sweet Music,' on Super Disco Edits is sure to find its way into many DJ sets. Originally recorded in 1978, this release is the second in a series where the label unearthed hidden gems from the archives. Ellis Hall Jr. and his Boston-based band bring two tracks that didn't make it to their Night Shift TV performance but are now seeing the light. 'Music, Sweet Music' is a breezy, summer anthem reminiscent of the Blackbyrds and Stevie Wonder, packed into a short but sweet 2:38 runtime. On the flip side, 'Forward Motion' offers a funkier vibe with a new wave edge, kicking in with powerful horns, driving drums and infectious melodies. Featuring Ellis Hall on keyboards and vocals, alongside a talented lineup, these tracks are perfect for fans of classic funk and soul.

Review: No one knows much about the history of The Engineers, but they were a curio of psych rock from Iran in the late 60s or early 70s. The band members are credited as Abbas Miraftab and Reza Agah, and they have a sound which is raw and dynamic, capturing everything exciting about that golden era for fuzzy, overdriven rock with a liberal dose of funk in its bones. This reissue of their insanely rare single is coming on Juzz Records, a label from Tehran which has been set up to carry this incredible artefact.

The pieces are technically covers; the A, of Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Brazilian Rhyme', and the B of 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' by James Mason. Front Office - "Wow" (2:14)
Holzer & Pure Love - "Pure Love" (3:06)
Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

It's Worth The Hurt
Review: Here comes another all-time classic from the extensive back catalogue of the legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae. The instantly recognisable '90% Of Me Is You' has been sampled endless times by hip hop giants like Large Professor, Jaylib, Mobb Deep and more and is a bonafide rare groove gem that is always in demand. Perhaps it's the pairing of the languid guitar and strings, or Gwen's sultry vocals and that steady breakbeat that keeps people hooked. Here it is backed here with its original b-side slow jam 'It's Worth The Hurt' and the whole super-rare 45 has been re-mastered, re-pressed and brought back for the return of the dance floor.

Review:  Mystical psychedelic rock with a dash of Anatolian music comes courtesy of Alexander Korostinsky, one of the key musicians behind The Sextones and an accomplished Turkish songwriter and producer. 'Bones Of God' is a filmic psychk-funk track, hitting on alternate notes of glee and hypnosis. 'Altin Maske', meanwhile, pares things back even deeper into romantic, hypnotic undertones, melting and heat-hazing our ears into happy submission.

Badawee (4:22)
Review: While his releases are always rooted in the twin attractions of jazz and psychedelia, Israeli producer Kutiman tends not to stick to one specific sound for very long. Having flitted between numerous styles in the last 12 months he's decided this time to focus on desert funk. He begins by mixing North African and Middle Eastern influences on the hip-wiggling dancefloor fuzziness of "Saluf" - an ear-pleasing affair rich in mazy organ solos, punchy horns, spacey Moog lines and an infectious and potent handclap-heavy rhythm. Flipside "Badawee" is a deeper and more luxurious affair, where intergalactic synthesizer lines and flowery melodies stretch out across a loose-limbed, bass-heavy groove.

Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's latest EP is a joint release with Calico Discos. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of "Dallas", the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener "Cebando" (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of "Atlantis".

These Latin psych-funk recordings were created for radio but were stored away for many years and now listening back they offer a glimpse into the vibrant, underground scene of Panama. Beautifully remastered and licensed through Tamayo Records, these rediscovered songs are now available after originally being pressed in extremely limited quantities. This time out it's a is sublime four-tracker from the much loved Brazilian pair of Luli Lucinha e O Bando. It first saw the light of day in 1972 but has long since been lost to the public. His mid-tempo selections on this Detroit-themed 7" open-up with G.C. Cameron, a Motown mainstay with a wide vocal range as demonstrated on this classic rare groove cut, 'No Matter Where.' On the backside is more rare groove from Detroit but this time from the 80s and Candye Edwards's 'Time Is What You Need.' Edwards was part of the Detroit funk powerhouse One Way and through that got connected with songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin McCord. They cooked up real gold together on a solo debut album with this being the standout cut from it. Perfect for warm outdoor dancing.

Review: Is there a more celebrated cosmic disco cut than Asha Putli's 1976 jam 'Space Talk'? It's long been a favourite of dusty-fingered disco diggers and was famously championed by David Mancuso at the Loft. This reissue accompanies the original artist's original extended mix - a spacey, slow-burn delight full of funky bass guitar, sweet vocals, shuffling beats and intergalactic chords - with a subtly spruced-up '2023 Mix' and two stellar revisions by Dimitri From Paris. He first delivers a deliciously stretched out, dub-laden full vocal remix that throws some intergalactic synths and additional percussion into the mix with fantastic results, before delivering the dub mix that the track always deserved (the 'Flying Saucer Dub'). Both his versions are brilliant and tastefully breathe new life into a genuinely classic cut.

Bad Junkie Blues (3:49)
Review: Fourth Wave reissue one of the great works of Japanese composer, keyboardist and producer Hiroshi Sato. Forming part of a fresh flood of reissues that the label have explicitly mandated, Sato's are highlights among a discrete period of exquisitely recorded and visually designed LPs from the late 70s and early 80s. With a sleekly surreal cover artwork by Tadanori Yokoo - psych rock's pastiching answer to Vaughan Oliver - Sato brought chilled finger-flair to his various recorded synth patches, electric pianos, chamber brasses and guitars, all of which are recorded to produce a precise, razored sound in xpander-funk. Something latent - something much more - than mere smooth AOR is conveyed here. Perhaps it can be focalised in the LP's aura of effortless, disengaged mellowness, as if good comportment and style is an inevitability of life in cosmopolitan 80s Tokyo.

He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. "Devil Go" is a thumping rhythm and blues call and response piece while "Jesu Kristo" hits with more of a frazzled bluesy funk. Both make you wish he recorded much more.

It showcase a real understanding of the dynamics of his chosen soul but laced with contemporary flourishes and plenty of great musicianship that touches son Anatolian rock and folk as well as colourful synths capes and psyched out meanderings. Steamy, bright and brilliant, this is a fine reminder of what makes Atlin Gun so damn irresistible especially on the vocal laced 'Anlatmam Derdimi' which is dripping with cool.

Drummer and producer Fernando Arbex lead the band and fomented a fusion of Latin rock and jazz-funk initially, before moving into a more disco orientated sound later on. A fizzy brew of blues, soul, rock, psychedelia all brought together with afrofunk magic and progressive conscious lyricism, their 1975 album Something For Someone is a vital mosaic of flavours ranging from the cosmic rock of "Exotica", the Hendrixian blues of "Do You Really Care" and "Savaged". Sadly it suffered a highly limited press and faded into obscurity. Until now. Afro7 have tracked the band down, detailed their story and brought this 43 year old album back to life with the respect and praise it deserves. Something for all of us.

Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Review: Craft Recordings get back on their curatorially expert business with this serious new reissue from Fania All Stars, the long out-of-print Latin-Soul-Rock. This eight-track gem from the 70s salsa ultragroup (literally; FAS consisted of over 25 members at the height of its fame), released via their own label in 1974, documents the moment at which over 40,000 salsa punters visited New York's Yankee Stadium to catch a glimpse of their talents, alongside a myriad of other Latin greats. Fania All Stars threw a curveball, however, by not only playing pure salsa but blending it with styles like funk and soul, thus sticking out from the crowd and adding a spicier punch. We welcome this record, out via Craft Latino, with alacrity, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of this 'wow' moment, which deserves to be documented even if solely for its powers of FAS' fusional imagination.

Review: This is a first-ever CD-reissue of legendary funk outfit Funkadelic's Greatest Hits album - known amongst fans as 'the sheep album' - from back in 1975. It came on Westbound and has plenty of the most enduringly iconic tunes as one of George Clinton's group's most iconic covers in a catalogue full of them. The tracks here are taken from the band's first six albums and features 45 mixes, LP mixes and an edit of the instrumental 'A Joyful Process' which has never before been reissued. The whole thing has been remastered as the original was known for being a little thin in the low end.

Review: Point Of No Return, the 1974 debut album by Nigerian combo the Funkees, has long been a sought-after set amongst those who dig for Afro-Funk and Afro-Rock fusion. Here, the inspired set gets a CD reissue for the very first time. It's a fine set, all told, with much of the material sounding not unlike similarly minded British combo Cymande, who burst onto the scene two years before the Funkees made their recording debut. Dotted throughout the album you'll find fuzzier, harder-edged cuts inspired by psychedelic rock, and the electric piano-laden, William Onyeabor-ish bounce of the inspired title track. If you're in the mood for heavy percussion, wild organ lines and even heavier guitars, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: Uganda: Dawn Of Rock is a great collision of creative talents from Akira Ishikawa and Count Buffaloes who combine to deliver a captivating exploration of rock music's emergence in Uganda. A classic since it was first issued, the album showcases Ishikawa's masterful drumming and Count Buffaloes' dynamic instrumentation. It overflows with infectious rhythms and soulful melodies and each track immerses listeners in the vibrant music scene of Uganda where rock and local African sounds are fused into something new. As such this is a record that offers a perfect glimpse into a pivotal moment in Uganda's musical history.

Review: A UK club culture icon for all the right reasons, Luke Unabomber has put in a helluva shift over the years bringing the best tunes to the best parties for decades upon decades. He might be just as visible these days as a social media raconteur-comedian, but his depth of knowledge is unfathomable and a compilation like this is the perfect vessel to realise just a little of what he possesses in his fabled record shelves. Away from direct dancefloor firecrackers, this is a chance for Una to show off some jaw-dropping mellow cuts spanning soul, jazz funk, spaced-out electro and scores more obscurities besides. It's a collection like no other, featuring fully fledged songs that will burrow into the soundtrack of your own life without even a shred of resistance.

This mega rare album will finally be reissued in 2021 with the latest remastering! The splendid sound loved by listeners from rare groove, free soul to Latin, bossa and even funk, soul is an eternal masterpiece that never fades!
