Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul

  5. Lost & Found
  6. Pause (reprise)
Review: Three years on from the release of the last Collocutor album, a new line-up has headed into the studio under the watchful eye of founding member Tamar Osborn. The results are uniformly impressive, with Osborn's six new compositions largely exploring a deeper, more atmospheric blend of late night jazz. Of course, there are still mind-altering, heavyweight workouts to enjoy - see the discordant post-punk jazz-rock fuzz of "The Angry One", an aggressive blast of razor-sharp horns, squally guitars and sweaty drums - but in general the tracks that linger longest in the memory are those that shuffle menacingly in pursuit of bittersweet, slow-burn release. For proof, check out the brilliant "Pause", "Continuation" and the ultra-smoky opener "Deep Peace".

Review: DNGDNGDNG is a new alias for Dengue Dengue Dengue! and Continentes Perdidos is the first work under this name. The album comes hot on the heels of last year's Zenit & Nadir LP, the 2018 album Son De Los Diablos and Siete Raices from 2016, so keep sup a high quality and high rate of release. With plenty of sound system influences, shadowy vocal sounds and cavernous bass, it is also run through with the jungle sounds and Peruvian rhythms that have defined this duo to date. The results are intriguing and compelling in equal measure.

Review: As debut albums go, drummer Asher Gamedze's first album for On The Corner Records is pretty darn impressive. Gamedze thought deeply about slavery, colonialism and the African experience during the period he spent making the set, asking his accompanying musicians (and vocalist Nono Nkoane) to try and incorporate these vital themes within their playing. The result is an album of rare brilliance that effortlessly melds elements of Afro-jazz, spiritual jazz and free-jazz into an expressive and unashamedly cosmic whole. The most ear-catching and significant track is undoubtedly the 19-minute suite that opens the album, though there's much musical joy and pain to be found elsewhere across the double-LP set.

Review: In her native island, Siti Muharam is known as the "golden voice of Zanzibar", a singer whose dedication to her native Swahili tongue and traditional musical styles is renowned. This debut album for On The Corner Records is an impressive affair, and offers a neat snapshot of the different musical elements that make Zanzibarian music so intriguing. As you'd expect for an island in the Indian ocean off the coast of Tanzinia, the instrumentation and percussion sounds draw influence from both Arabic and African styles, while Muharam's vocals will remind many observers of traditional Indian music. It's a heady and intoxicating blend that's well worth a listen.

Review: You won't hear many albums as direct, hard hitting and confrontational as this: musing on the black experience, culture, identity, love and trauma, it is a spoken word and poetic masterclass from California born Tenesha The Wordsmith with production from Khalab. Jazz, electronic dance, afro rhythms, hip hop and broken beat all make up the grooves and beautifully frame the album's thundering truths and uncomfortable realities. At times intimate and personal, at others chest beating and empowering, it is an album that makes a lasting impact. "I hope your compassion for others grows," says Tenesha of listening to it, and surely it will.
