Baby Baby Please
Cat: ART 001. Rel: 04 Dec 19
Baby Baby Please (7:27)
True Destiny (9:32)
Review: Some artistic edits from a brand new series. We're not sure who the "unknown artist" is behind the reworks (which date from this year and 2016 respectively), but it's clear that they know what they're doing. A-side "Baby Baby Please" is a wonderfully dubbed-out and glassy-eyed revision of a lesser-known Italo-disco/Hi-NRG cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" that boasts a killer vocal breakdown midway through. Over on the flip, "True Destiny" is an epic, low-slung revision of an obscure disco number that rightly emphasizes the heavy groove pushing the track forward and includes some tasty delay and echo trickery.

Hey Mister Mister
Cat: THANKYOU 042. Rel: 28 Feb 25
Hey Mister Mister (vocal) (6:28)
Hey Mister Mister (instrumental) (5:23)
Hey Mister Mister (extended) (8:59)
Review: Rarely does Italo disco ever bare its soul so sensitively. Kriss' 'Hey Mister Mister' was released in 1988, and while the Italian genre's first wave then may have been facing its death knells, that didn't stop producer and songwriter Raff Todesco form making his absolute most vulnerable best of the terminal sound. A frank drum machine makes for a firm but fair bedrest for an easygoing, clean-channelled guitar vamps, which only languidly peak out of the mix at select points, suggesting an ease wrought from years of yearning. Todesco's original vocals steal all the limelight, as unruffled synths truss appeals to spontaneous getaways and falsetto yearnings for the right guy.

Tell Me Why (RFX edit) (5:37)
Colosso (Outra edit) (5:45)
Review: Craft Music's Good For Dance series continues with its second instalment and this one has been curated by none other than DJ Craft himself. Joining him are talented pals Schmoltz, Bogdan Ra, Romain FX, and Outra, also known as Joutro Mundo. These deep diggers are celebrated for their prowess in unearthing hidden gems and transforming them into dancefloor anthems and that's what they do here as each artist brings a unique flavour to the mix. Schmoltz's 'Luv The States' is a peak-time percussive disco jam, Bogdan Ra brings some slap-funk drums and glossy Italo synths and 'Tell Me Why' has crunchy drums and jagged synth stabs before a camp closer in 'Colosso'.

Review: Between 1983 and '87, Fun Fun - a studio project fronted by a trio of female vocalists - delivered some of the most commercially successful Italo-disco records around, with a trademark sound that drew much from the club-ready sound of Hi-NRG. This double-disc collection, subtitled 'The Final Edition', rounds up their greatest hits, B-sides, album tracks, alternative mixes and club versions. Fittingly, it begins with their most lauded track of all, the 'Scratch Mix' of 'Happy Station', before offering up such gems as the tactile and dreamy synth-pop perfection of 'Sing Another Song (Remix)', the soaring Hi-NRG pop perfection of 'Baila Bolero', the sing-along joy of 'Give Up Your Fight (Boxer Remix)' - which sounds like a lost Shep Pettibone club rework from 1986 - and a silly-but-fun cover of the Monkees 'I'm a Believer'.

Rave (5:46)
Speed (4:20)
Cherry (4:15)
Review: Coral City return early in 2022 with an excellent release. N&W are on duty again here with three stand-out tracks. 'Rave' the A-Side is exactly what it says on the tin. It's 808 State meets Larry Heard with a touch of Inner City. Stripped down and four to floor. Classic Roland 909 drums are met with aAhook that shakesAany dancefloor, expect early support with this. 'Speed' is a killer Nu-Disco / Boogie affair with a nod to the seedy underworld of the '80s, Picture Michelle Pfeiffer throwing shapes on the dancefloor in Scarface, and you are right on the nose. Finally, 'Cherry' is an all-out Italo / Hi-NRG workout, the linndrums, the driving arpeggio bassline and overall melancholy feel, is reminiscent of Bobby Orlando.

Review: Red Laser Records continue their stellar form with another knockout release, blending Manctalo fire from old hands and fresh faces alike. Frank Butters opens the EP with The Call Of The Wild, a dazzling blast of crystalline synths, thunderous bass, and cosmic effects that showcase his forward-thinking production skills. Bob Swans delivers 'Bodyform4U', a dreamy arpeggiated groove that builds an uplifting, futuristic atmosphere, perfect for igniting the dancefloor. Lone Saxon switches things up with 'Hypersleep' a breakbeat-infused piano gem that oozes nostalgic charm, before Franz Scala and Il Bosco finish strong with Webo, a late-night, tension-filled Manctalo banger.

Review: Red Laser is back with just one more gem before the end of the year of our Lord 2024. Apparently already tried and tested at recent parties in Manchester, this release brings four prime Italo disco edits all curated by Bosco. These tracks were unearthed during his many trips to Italy and have since been refined for the club and 'Destiny' opens with pulsating arpeggios, cosmic bass and a stunning female vocal that gets the airtime it deserves. Next, 'Flavio' delivers a classic Italo vibe, 'Newsin' is a catchy track blending marimba and synth and closer 'Lace' is a proto-goth new wave piece with a romantic edge.

This Time (Things Will Be Different) (3:17)
Review: This release marks Netherlands-born Luca dell'Orso's debut on CWPT, showcasing his talent for crafting lush, melodic Italo tracks with a timeless feel. 'Solitair & Solidair' sets the tone, its soft fanfare and confident groove evoking the spirit of Balearic ecstasy. 'Dear Rosie,' featuring Jolisa's wistful vocals, is a highlight, its melody reminiscent of a classic Eric Rohmer film. 'Winter Scent' delves into a more introspective mood, capturing the essence of a winter walk with its evocative vocoding and deep sonic layers. 'Love By Association' injects a sense of optimism, its driving rhythm and pitch-shifting synthesis reminiscent of classic Eurodisco. 'Propaganda' takes a more forceful approach, offering a glimpse into the industrial pleasures of Dusseldorf in the 1980s. 'This Time (Things Will Be Different)', finally, wraps up an impressive package with a touch of elegant minimalism.

Review: Whodamanny's Biloba sublabel on Periodica Records takes us into dark, hypnotic sax-driven sounds here with a new single that comes with four unique versions. The Club mix of 'Volveran ' features chanting vocals and neon-hued pads over tinny electric disco beats with some big sax stylings. TehSax Only does what it says on the tin and the Radio mix condenses this energy into a spellbinding pop gem while the Dub version removes the sax, highlights delayed drums, cosmic chords and sunlit guitar riffs and tops it with hazy vocals. These are lively, retro-future disco delights that are sure-fire crowd-pleasers.

Se Mi Rompi Non Ci Sto (instrumental version) (3:31)
Se Mi Rompi Non Ci Sto (extended dub mix) (5:32)
Review: 'Se Mi Rompi Non Ci Sto' ('If I Broke, I Didn't Know') was the breakout single of Italian circus performer and personality Lara Orfei. Known as a TV actress before branching into music, Lara was in turn a branch on the Orfei family tree, an Italian dynasty of circus showmen and ringmasters. Perhaps due to her commitment to carry the tented family torch, Orfei's time as a musician was hardly successful, and this has in turn resulted in original copies of this record becoming hard to find, and expensive to buy. That all changes with this Thank You reissue, which tracks Orfei's haunting, trapezoid voice against clarion pianos and "oh, oh, oh" emphatics. A brilliant instrumental also bedazzles the B-side.

Review: Army of God's 'Salvation'' back in 2012 soon became a cult coldwave cut. It was the one and only release by the pair of Aroy Dee and Miss Jagroe... until now. More than ten years on they are back with 'Endless Skies' which is a new EP full of analogue warmth, signature synth designs and aching strings. Of course, Jagroe's unique voice features and brings extra allure to the beats. Aroy Dee steps up with an edit of the title cut and lays in some more form drums and pairs back the vocals to make things even darker. On the flip you'll find the throbbing bass and off-kilter keys of 'Fear the Night' with a dark version going even more into the shady unknown.

This release is a heartfelt tribute to the 80s, but it offers more than just nostalgia-it's an interpretation of the era's distinct musical style. The tunes capture the iconic timbres, drum sounds, melodies and harmonies of the 80s so take you back to that time on a wave of killer electro rhythms that are both vibrant and fresh but driving and club ready. If you're longing for the 80s but don't have a time machine, this 12" is the perfect way to relive the music of that decade.

Review: Ruben Benabou marks out and identifies another sonic constellation; this is a rapid indie trance-dance four-tracker of galactic ambition and scale. Drawing inspiration from sci-fi soundtracks, and the warmer currents of electro, leaders 'Message To Nowhere' and 'Words In A Void' also recall the gladdened awe of space disco, with twinging leads skirting about the stereo like passing shooting stars. The Hacker's version of the title track plays back like an 8-bit minigame version of the main mission, with its pocket-generated drums, while 'A Thousand Nights' is a prime exercise in retro synthwave, and the perfect closer.

Review: 'Vision Of Love' is a Euro-disco gem released initially in 1987 by DJ's Project, a supergroup made up of two core members, Hamburg's Mike Mareen and Italian singer Silvano Pulignano. Their third single landed them conveniently in the laps of long-runners ZYX Records, whose continual activity in the retro Italo reissues game is the best reason one can have for a 2024 reissue. This new 12" version stays true to the DJ'ses' best-loved and most-well known hit, bringing the duo's authentic electro-tom hits and up-down basslines to our attentions once more.

Review: 22Recordings' latest dystopi-lectro outing takes the form of Lachina's second self-titled EP volume, bringing six edge-of-the-map microchip malfunctions to the replicant ear. Spanning every trace influence from chiptune to outrun to Italo, 2024 debutant Lachina continues to explore their very own brand of phlox purple electro, beginning on the twizzling opener 'Sogni E Ombre', marking the midpoint with the synthetic bass guitar pluckers '05.11.93' and 'What Is Love', and ending on the sampler vox-shot cheese-oozing that is 'The Violet Season'. Review: Bobby Orlando is something of a hi-NRG master - his work with Divine is credited as a major influence on the Pet Shop Boys - who tapped up the then soon-to-be iconic duo Oh Romeo for their debut outing back in 1982. Their work on 'These Memories' made it a hit right from the off with big drums, shiny synths and arps and plenty of campuses. Late last year, Iventi d'Azzurro put together this remastered package featuring extended versions of four rare Oh Romeo tracks on the EP Living Out a Fantasy. These bangers really capture the duo's signature energy and timeless appeal and make this a record that suits both working DJs and lovers of big jams alike, all with the right amounts of nostalgia.

Review: Italian Dandolo makes a bold solo debut, taking us on an adventurous sonic journey from the Adriatic coast to the distant shores of Thailand. The track pulses with the vibrant energy of Italo Disco, blending infectious melodies with rich, tropical rhythms. There's a sense of escapism here, capturing the allure of a sun-soaked escape, while the production stays firmly rooted in the glistening sounds of the 1980s. On the flip side, Cosmo Dance delivers a remix that is pure dancefloor gold. The dub version leans into Eastern-inspired motifs, nodding to the golden age of Italo Disco with its deep basslines and shimmering synths. Review: Lovin', freedom, passion... just three key ingredients make up the bare necessities of wellbeing, which must be secured before we venture into the endless subjectivities of human happiness. Crack this emotional code, and you're in for a good time, so say the Bordello A Parigi resident players Also Playable Mono (Rafal Lachmirowicz) and Fred Ventura. Teaming up for the first time for a blistering take on nu-glossy Italo disco - informed by the former's nascently needly version of the sound, and the latter's contrastingly classic post-punk come club education of the same - this insanely glittered plumper features Ventura feature on vocals through alternating takes on the present global condition, the A-sider marking a stark contrast to the A2 side's suddenly socially charged statement, 'System Breakdown On Wikileaks'. The B-side ventures veer vocoded, flipping the script onto two further, emphatic pleas for change.

'Superclarke', Discolion', 'Bad Spencer' and 'Souveni r D'Enfance' were produced long before Lodde begun his career as Dusty Kid; a tour de force of Italo meets electroclash, it is remarkable that the mid-wax cuts especially should have been made in as early as 2002; some of the synthwork and command of space make the record sounds like it could have been beamed in from at least the post-2020s electro house era: just listen to the rising actions of 'Discolion' and you'll know what we're talking about.

Review: Shannon's debut single from her debut album, 'Let The Music Play', defined an era. It was a huge crossover hit and one of four number ones from the American singer and was the start of the huge dance-pop sound that dominated for many years after. The gated 808 drums are one of the most popular sounds of the time (also heard on the likes of Phil Collin's 'In The Air Tonight') and here they are paired with some spaced out reverb, crisp snares and big keyboard stabs. It's prickly and futurist even mow, and that vocal is always going to get any club going wild. Two versions are served up here next to the original on a slick purple vinyl.

The Lisbon-based Aussie is at it again here. She begins with the sun-soaked ambient shimmer of intro track 'Feel The Peak', where decidedly Balearic classical guitar flourishes catch the ear, before heading towards peak-time dancefloors on the wide-eyed dancefloor synth-pop flex of 'Touch The Vibe', which sounds Pet Shop Boys' Chris Lowe after a fistful of happy pills. Review: It's been a minute since we had a record from Donny Benet, the Australian singer, songwriter, bass guitar ace, disco evangelist and entertainer. Turns out it's always worth the wait, with Infinite Desire not only classic Benet - albeit on a smooth, sultry, easygoing tip - but also a record that marks the beginning of a new chapter for this beloved character. His first on a freshly minted indie label he set up. A fun odyssey with added glitter and swirl, like almost everything the man touches, Infinite Desires is inspired by a simpler time, when blazers with shoulder pads were nightclub attire, hair was big, and overbites ruled the dancefloor. But what really stands out is how right these sounds still feel today. This is no pastiche, let alone parody, but DIY innovation that serves to remind us of what groove really means.

Review: Synaptic Juice is a dizzying trip into the world of electronic and synth-driven sounds with Edinburgh's Natasha Kitty Katt at the wheel. Her third studio album is a melange of retro 80s beats, eerie atmospheres and futuristic storytelling which explores the surreal psyche of Ze Katt and features tales of vampires, alien love and otherworldly experiences. Each track offers a portal into a neon-lit world where reality and fantasy blur and standout collaborations with Billy Wirth, Suki Soul and His Bitter Truth add depth. The album's sci-fi and cyberpunk influences create a cinematic sound that is bold and adventurous and unlike much else, we've heard of late.

Review: Following a successful run of disco deviance on top labels such as GAMM, Basic Fingers, Barefoot Beats and Tugboat, Toronto's Patchouli Brothers are up next on the sixth edition of the "Pleasure of Love" edit series. The "Beam Me Up" hosts have a proven track record with the ol' razor and tape, distilling rare and underappreciated cuts and turning them into peak time dancefloor gems. These four cuts on volume six are no exception. Our picks: the joyous and sunkissed "Made In France" (tres bien!), followed by the carnival energy of "Soca Danny" with its powerhouse brass section and the classic Stateside vibe of "Crossed Your Mind" on the flip.

Review: Antoni Maiovvi's latest synth EP 'Birds of Paradise' is a dark, brooding release that draws inspiration from classic horror soundtracks, avian themes and early synthwave. Like something between an 80s title theme for the mothman and a modernist fever dream for automobiles taking flight, each track here is named after a quirkily-named bird, whether that be the Quetzal or the Streamertail. In keeping with the thermal-riding and soaring feel of the music, every track contains subtle birdsong as its texture, not to mention beautifully danceable yet minimal melodies.

Review: We find ourselves writing this a lot but this really is a top-tier Italo disco record that is as rare as an honest politician and way out on its own atop many people's want list. Wish Key was founded by Manlio Cangelli and their debut in 1983, 'Orient Express' quickly gained popularity and led to further releases like 'Easy Way' in 1984 and 'Life.' It's a track drowning in echo and reverb and 80s drum sounds with a nice-paced bassline and camp vocals. It comes in various versions here as well as with the signature Flemming Dalum for more club-friendly vibes

Label boss Flemming Dalum has selected some deep, mystical and melancholic tackle on this one, with timeless classics such as like the bright like neon "Eagles In The Night" by Dario Dell'Aere, the post-punk swagger of The Creatures' "The Other World Robots" or the gothic romanticism of "Blue Room" by Kirlian Camera all showing an interesting side of Italo disco music.

Terpentine (7:08)
Terpentine (Machinegewehr remix) (5:50)
Our Adventure Begins (6:47)
Mowing The Lawn (6:27)
Review: Moustache Records has long ploughed a synth-heavy, retro-futurist furrow in which 21st century producers showcase their love of muscular, body-shaking styles of the 1980s, most frequently Italo-disco and Hi-NRG. The playfully named Trending Topic fit neatly into this blueprint, with this debut EP framing them as lovers of Bobby Orlando style Hi-NRG, the camper end of Italo-disco and the formative years of Euro-dance. This approach is best exemplified by lead cut 'Terpentine', where colossal synth riffs and lead lines climb above a thickset sequenced bassline and snappy drum machine beats. That is given a slightly harder and more pulsating tweak courtesy of Machinegewhr, before our heroes return with two more tracks: the Hi-NRG-goes-trance style 'Our Adventure Begins' and the on-the-dancefloor-at-Heaven-in-1986 flex of 'Mowing The Lawn'.

Underboard (remix) (5:42)
Cedar Of Lebanon (5:37)
Underboard (Anatolian Weapons remix) (7:30)
Review: A hard one to pigeonhole when it comes to genre, floating somewhere between Italo and synthpop, and originally released in Switzerland in 1985. Written by German pop group Hongkong Syndikat, both tracks on Ethereal Beat's 'Underboard' flaunt a hyper-distinct yet soothing sound, one which is hard to forget. 'Underboard' is a coolly paced downtempo number which builds up with layers of subtle percussion, lusciously adorned by heavy, saxy reedsmanship and mysterious vocal accents with no real message - 100% chill o'clock served on ice. 'Cedar Of Lebanon' picks up the tempo a notch, once again setting the scene for the reeds to shine as the catchy melody is presented; beautiful 80s instrumentalism from a golden age, and clearly not made in Ableton. The B-side features a respectful DJ tool style remix by contemporary producer Anatolian Weapons.

Review: Remastered on vinyl for the first time since 1980, Kano's eponymous album is given a new life through limited edition and hand-numbered vinyl. Italian production duo Stefano Pulga and Luciano Ninzatti are considered pioneers of Italo by many, with their sound serving as a bridge to electro and breakdance later in the 1980s. Features dancefloor hits such as 'It's A War' and its instantly recognisable hook, the neon-lit night drive of 'Cosmic Voyager' and another golden oldie in the form of 'I'm Ready' with its funky vocoded goodness . Review: The debut release in a new EP series from Bordeaux's Monomoods label, ordained for nu-disco and Italo disco lovers. The label call on four resident producers - Doctr, Brian Ring, Astore, and Hysteric - to each deploy their very own dancefloor finesser here. Ensuring maximum satisfaction at a near constant drip-fed rate, 'Boxer' and 'Open Secret' bring us nonstop synthy, glam-glittered gusto; the latter track is special indeed, and a highlight of ours. The feeling of pure glee is tossed asunder by the B-side, however, with 'Mandarin Energy' bringing profound chord-data to an anomalistically expansive mood, and 'Adventure' fitting perfectly as the lighter, but still heavy, gated-snared Italowave number of eclectic choice.

Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Featuring the beautiful vocals of Tiziana Negrello, it was a dazzling delight and afterwards over time, Virgin's sound evolved into what became known as Eurobeat with various vocalists stepping in. Fast forward to today, and Iventi d'Azzurro has teamed up with Tiziana and the talented Mirko Hirsch to bring you 'Let's Dance', another surefire hit in the Virgin legacy. Packed with big drums and shiny arps as well as signature infectious energy, it's a total must-have.

Review: In the late 1980s, three young musicians - Rick and Remon Melsert, along with Paul Nieuwenhuijsen - approached Michiel van der Kuy with a demo titled 'She'. Their collaborative project, dubbed Kick The Habit, was poised to blend their talents with Michiel's signature touch, infused with a hint of early house music. However, for reasons unknown, the project was shelved and remained hidden for over three decades. Now, however, 35 years later, the combined efforts of Michiel Van Der Kuy, Sergi Elias and the Vintage Pleasure Boutique label combine to revive this long-lost synth-disco gem. Now not only resurrecting the original track, but also packing two new remixes from the duo Prospero, this record's apotheotic, outta-space flare is once again heard; 'She' peaks through the somewhat misrepresentative label "vintage synth music" with a boundary-dashing, topline synth hook at around the minute-and-a-half mark, which sounds confoundingly decades ahead of its time.

The Madness In The Method (5:46)
Review: Antoni Maiovvi flaunts an aerated, sunspotty sound on 'Knights of New Haven', blending Ned West Coast influences and US machine music. 'Later Not Lately' pulses with light kicks and ruffling hi-hats, echoing Chicago house and flavoursome tech trance; Legowelt (Danny Wolfers) reimagines it with serrated snares and a gritty TB-303 bassline. 'Slack Blabbath' weaves staggered synths and sharp percussion, and closer 'The Madness In The Method' swirls static-laced drums around eerire bass, balancing Maiovvi's horror-disco roots with bold house rhythms. This EP is a dark, driving, and grand fusion of electronic styles, veering increasingly crushy and redux-happy. Legowelt's snare is especially oomphy, and the closer's synths especially brooding.

Review: No, this is not a long-lost jam from popular British songsmith David Gray, but a sought-after underground Italo-disco anthem from 1987 fronted by an uncredited Italian singer and produced by a duo called Scarface. In typical Thank You/Sound Metaphors style, this fine reissue boasts all three versions from the original 12": the glossy, synth-pop 'extended mix', a vocal-free instrumental, and the 'special mix'/DJ friendly dub mix style 'extended instrumental' - a version that sounds like a tweaked and extended backing track to a Shep Pettibone produced Pet Shop Boys album track from 1986. We also get a fresh, effects-laden 'Bonus Dubeats' take from label affiliate Castro which is arguably the best of a strong bunch.

Review: For his latest outing on the Good Timin' imprint he set up some years back, Jex Opolis is joined by Ian D Knight. The St Louis-based performance artist notably makes his presence felt on "Look At My Car", delivering a vocal inspired by "consumerism and rampant motorism" over the NYC producer's superb, Padlock-inspired, boogie-dub groove. The Compass Point influence also comes to the fore on closer "Guitar Sands", where intertwining guitar and synthesizer motifs stretch out across a Larry Levan-friendly backing track. The EP's other cut, "Rimini Nite", successfully pays tribute to the halcyon days of Italo-disco. It's every bit as thrilling as the rest of this superb 12".
