Review: French DJ and Producer Jacques Bon teams up with fellow Parisian, underground DJ and producer Drux for his 5th EP. The subtle deep house LP incorporates techno elements, especially in the subliminal sub-bass lines on tracks like 'Celeste' and 'Mirage', borrowing from the exclusive rave and party atmosphere the two became famous from. Whilst the record does have high points in 'Space Ways' and 'Sandstorm', 'A Long Way' is a mellow raving experience, with the duo's clever use of percussion and tubular bells to create a laid-back, sophisticated atmosphere throughout. This record is the perfect background soundtrack for parties that last long into the night, and all the way through the morning.

The Other Side Of House
Review: A New World, the second artist album in as many years from D'Marc Cantu shows that he should be viewed as being the master of his own destiny rather than an engaging sideshow to more high-profile associates Traxx and James T. Cotton. The lack of Jakbeat, the primal interpretation of Chicago house that the Nation stable of artists have developed, is notable here, When it does rear its grungy head, it does so in the most irresistibly creepy manner; "Green Bike Sea" starts with rolling snares and leads to a grainy bass and shaking percussion underpinning muffled vocals and bleeding acid lines. "Try Me" is meaner and yet more suggestive, with the scent of blood and sweat-caked bar counters rising over a red-lit, heaving bass. But the real highlights on A New World occur when the producer completely indulges his esoteric whims. "Mobile Communication" sees heavy claps supporting bleeding, bleepy bass licks, but it's merely a prelude for "The First Planet". Inspired by Detroit techno, it's Cantu's piece de resistance: atmospheric synths arc slowly upwards, their acidic undercurrent like tail lights on a jumbo jet as they reach into the upper levels of the night sky, hopefully guiding Cantu towards greater recognition.

Review: Dan Piu wrote this album during the "dark, dystopian times" of the last year. The record's themes take in nature, human life, sci-fi, cyborgs and plenty in between with opener 'Tru Confession' being a robust house track stacked with throwback breaks, futuristic synths and old school vocals. There is a real warmth and soul to the machine sounds of 'Un-X-Plored Exodus' while a certain sense of 90s New York house colours 'Upgrade System M59'. 'System Of Ethics' shows off a fine mastery of synth craft that brims with emotion and 'Asteroid Blues' is like a lost Kerri Chandler cut. Essential.

Review: &Chakib is the debut album from Swiss Producer, DJ, and live-act Dominik Traub, also known as Dandara. Infusing influences from Africa, Asia, and Latin America with European techno and house, Dominik's signature sound shines through. The album's inception came after a fateful encounter with Algerian vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Chakib Bouzidi at a festival in Basel. Despite Chakib's untimely passing, Dominik continued the project, honouring his memory by completing the work. Infused with Chakib's voice notes and collaborative recordings, the album serves as a heartfelt tribute and through resilient collaboration and creative influence it emerges as a fine collection of globally influenced dance music.

Review: Some two years after dropping his debut album, "Broken Knowz", Jay Daniel delivers a follow-up. Interestingly, the fast-rising Detroit producer opted to move away from his usual club sound on "Tala", recently telling Resident Advisor that it was, "an invitation to know me outside of DJing". It's as deep, jazzy and musically rich as you'd expect, with Daniel flitting between jazz-funk/broken beat fusion, spacey ambient soundscapes, head-nodding hip-hop beats, intergalactic R&B instrumentals, super-smooth beatdown fare and the kind of hushed, glassy-eyed grooves that are best enjoyed while lying flat on your back at six in the morning.

Review: It's amazing to think that Jay Daniel is still only 25. Since making his debut five years ago, the producer has been responsible for some of the finest house music to emerge from Detroit in recent times. Interestingly, he's slightly modified his woozy and gently soul-flecked blueprint on this hotly anticipated debut album. For starters, many of the tracks - standouts "Paradise Valley" and "Knowledge of Selfie" included - feature live drums, played and recorded in his mother's basement. This rhythmic adjustment gives Broken Knowz a far looser and warmer feel than his previous work, in the process elevating his deliciously rich and musical deep house to a whole new level. In other words, it's an impressively assured and entertaining debut album.

Life's What You Make It
Review: Earlier this year, Dan Snaith raised a few eyebrows by releasing a FabricLive mix that was almost entirely made up of previously unheard Daphni productions. It's some of those 19 productions, presented in extended and fully-fledged form, that make up the bulk of Joli Mai, Snaith's second Daphni full-length. It's a far more varied and evocative set than its largely dark, percussion-heavy predecessor, variously touching on dreamy, head-in-the-clouds late night house, acid-fired, off-kilter dancefloor psychedelia, bustling Afro-house fusion, stripped-back dub disco, revivalist rave thumpers and, in the case of stunning closer "Life is What You Make It", languid instrumental bliss.

Review: Much loved musical wizard Daphni aka Caribou aka Dan Snaith is back with his first new album since 2017. He is someone who joins the dots between club sounds and listening music with great synth artistry and a unique vision. That is the case here in a record that was written over a prolonged period of time without any pre- conceived plan, which makes for a free-wheeling listen rich in supple beats, inventive melodies and all manner of influences. Once again then, Smith has struck gold here.

Sitting somewhere between Brothomstates and Legowelt, all instrumental, Darling weaves a rich analog tapestry that draws you in and refuses to let you go. Highlights include the church-like cascades of "The M Song", the body shifting rolling technoid saviour faire of "Pillow People" and the warm freeform electro adventures of "Free Hand". Get moving...

Review: Via well received releases on the likes of Ghostly International and Kompakt, Berlin-based Dauwd Al Hilali has spent the last six years releasing increasingly impressive forays into deep house and techno. Given that many of these combined effortless musical warmth and mellow grooves with nods to more experimental electronic fare both old and new (Terry Riley, the Radiophonic Workshop, krautrock, Detroit beatdown etc.), hopes are naturally high for this debut album on Ninja Tune offshoot "Technicolour". Happily, it's exactly the kind of gently melodious and rhythmically persuasive set you'd expect, with his usual rich and hazy workouts being joined by tracks that variously look to ambient music and Theo Parrish for inspiration.

Their family of artists all had a cuddly, lo-fi, heartfelt take on the genre that has spawned countless classic LPs and 12"s, all with great artwork from Stefan Marx. Next up to add his voice to the conversation is Joe Davies with his new album Shields In Full Sunlight. It is a trip that has a lingering emotional impact such is the tranquility of the sounds and meditative nature of the grooves, which are embellished with wispy pads and subtle vocal sounds.

Review: Hell Yeah Records sets a super tone for 2024 with a captivating new album from Australian producer Dawn Again. Every Dog's Hotel presents a dreamy, breaks-infused journey into what Dawn Again calls "pubwave." Drawing from his decade-long experience and releases on labels like Houseworx and Enjoyment Division, Melbourne-based Nick Verwey crafts a sunlit, sunset-ready sound perfect for grown-up crowds. Inspired during lockdown by nostalgic downtempo vibes from the 90s and 00s, Verwey aimed to recreate the communal drinking atmosphere of his favorite pubs. The result is a lush, Balearic "pubwave" album, complemented by a charming cover painting by artist Holly Hunt, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in lavish, escapist downtempo sounds.

Review: DDWY appeared on Public Possession label earlier in the year when they put out their Chill Pill compilation and their contribution was the perfectly balearic dance gem 'Orchard'. Now the pair is back with a limited edition album, Sprig Songs. It lays out their distinctive take on dance music which is dubbed out and trippy, often slow paced, doused in proggy melodies and all flavoured with unique Nangis chants. The spell binding selection includes the warped rhythms and FX of 'Green Villa' and otherworldly depths of 'Do Deers Dream?' while 'Hair Spiders' is a more dancefloor ready and dubbed out beatdown.

Review: It is hard to overstate the impact that Etienne de Crecy had on the global, but specifically French, electronic scene. His debut album in 1996 brought all new sounds and references and set in motion a revolution that spawned everything from classic French touch to jazzy deep house by Saint Germain via what went on to become the Ed Banger-aligned electro house of Justice et al. It all started with the first volume of Super Discount and carried on through further volumes such as this third one which is as searing and vital now as ever.

Review: Those of a certain vintage will know and most likely love Super Discount. Originally released in 1997 during French dance music's "French Touch" boom, the album offered a quirky snapshot of a vibrant Parisian scene in the centre of a creative explosion. Although credited to de Crecy, who compiled it (and mixed the CD version), he only produced some of the tracks, with others being collaborations with, or contributions from, the likes of Air, Alex Gopher and his then Motorbass partner, the late Phillipe Zdar. As this 25th anniversary edition proves, the album has lost none of its allure, offering a delicious mixture of loopy peak-time house, sample-rich deep house, horizontal lounge grooves, trip-hop, dub and rubbery jazz-house.

Review: Released in 1996, 'Super Discount' is the debut album by Etienne de Crecy, an influential figure in the French electronic music scene. De Crecy's influence helped to propagate certain genres, from the good old scratchy filter-house beloved of Daft Punk to the jazzier take on the house genre that St Germain and others gave it, all while establishing France's national identity on the global electronic music market. Packed with early collaborators from DJ Tall to AIR, this is more than just 'fun' music - it's got that classic French Midas touch.

Review: Super Discount was the hugely influential 1996 debut album by Etienne de Crecy. Several more volumes came and helped to define the French scene of the ear and they remain great inspirations to this day as De Crecy's work very much propagated certain other genres, from scratchy filter-house a la Daft Punk to the jazzier house genre of St Germain. This second volume is packed with plenty of names who helped to define the early French electronic scene such as Alex Gopher & Julien Delfaud, Philippe Zdar and DJ Mehdi. It's raw electro house that fizzes and spits with potent dancefloor scuzziness and energy even now.

Review: Spain's Eduardo De La Calle started making his name around the techno circles in the early noughties, via labels such as Hard Fandango and Thatlab Electroniks. However, it's fair to say that his breakthrough came within the last decade, when the resurgence of proper house and techno saw and end to the 'minimal' takeover of the years prior to that; this, in part, was thanks to an extensive collection of releases for his own Analog Solutions. This time he's back with his debut album and it comes through the young Badance label, home to the likes of Kareem Ali and BMBF. The Intellinet Prophecy is a techno album with audible influences of jazz and the supremely scientific, where tracks like "Call From Beyond" or "Faith Necessary" go way beyond the dancefloor and land somewhere in outer space, a place on which genres don't seem to exist and the passage of time is swamped in beats and melodies.

Each track on this glistening record could be classed as an oldie but goldie, having graced the iconic Belgian label Music Man Records in 1990 - which evidently is still going strong. Recall delectably crude space jams and hardware ham-fists.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight box damage, otherwise in perfect condition***

Now in its second reissues round, 'The B Sides' are a cornucopia of vintage techno gems from the Belgian techno maestro Frank De Wulf. Each track on this glistening record could be classed as an oldie but goldie, having graced the iconic Belgian label Music Man Records in 1990 - which evidently is still going strong. Recall delectably crude space jams and hardware ham-fists.

Review: As his career has developed and matured, so Xavier Thomas' sounds has broadened ever further. Never afraid of a concept and constantly looking to take in influence from all over the world, the Debruit mission last shored up on Soundway alongside Alsarah. Now Outside The Line pivots around the idea of washing up on an imaginary island, and it finds Thomas working his effervescent electronics up into joyous melees of tropical flavoured trap and footwork. There's space for playful, dubby house music and speedy bass music, but as always the generic framework plays second fiddle to the rambunctious melodic content.

Review: Although best known for producing alien electro for the likes of Tabernacle, Jeremiah R also makes evocative deep house under the lesser-known Marvis Dee alias. Here he pops up on Voodoo Gold with a mini album's worth of woozy goodness. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the Larry Heard-meets-Moon B warmth of opener "Neon Sky" and ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy "Moodnlight Dancing", to the glacial ambience of "At Dawn" (perfect for those rare outdoor sunrise sets) and dream house revivalism of "Thoughts", where picturesque melodies tumble down over swirling chords and a tantalizing bassline. He also goes hypnotic via the fluttering melody loops and cascading synthesizer lines of "Treasures of Mind".

Review: "Good things come to those who wait" is one of those over-used platitudes, but it certainly rings true in the case of this debut album from Deep Space Orchestra. The long running project of Chris Barker and Simon Murray, Deep Space Orchestra have been concocting their own brand of house and techno dancefloor science over a multitude of 12" releases since the turn of the decade, with continuous mention of an album in the offing. The pair have eased down the output more recently to focus on an album, and the results on Memory are nothing short of spell-binding. Nine cuts of deeply affecting dancefloor voodoo that will enlighten any soundsystem with "Dream States" a particularly potent number reminiscent of Kyle Hall at his finest!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Deep Space Orchestra's Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO's beautiful and surprisingly fragile "Mendoza" leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover "Fatum" close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds' "Coldname ELD", a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

Review: Alessandro Passini's most recent full-length under the Deep88 alias, The Black Album, was a fine collection of analogue-rich deep house containing a wealth of club-ready material. Less than six months on from the release of that set, he's at it again, serving up a solid mini-album of straight-up deep house delights. Highlights come thick and fast, from the Balearic era, piano-laden positivity of "Too Many Notes" and fluid "Track 4" - all acid bass, spacey pads and bustling melody lines - to the chunkier grooves and hazier lead lines of straight-to-tape jam "L'Archivo", and jackin' but dreamy "Tape 2". Due to the prevailing retro-futurist vibe, it feels a little like a long-lost EP from the early '90s, which is no bad thing.
