Review: Fred Peterkin has decided that his latest full-length excursion should be credited to Captain P, an occasional alter ego first introduced on 2010 debut album The Incredible Adventures of Captain P. Musically, Escapism includes nods to many of his previously explored influences - slick Detroit hip-hop, Motor City techno, luscioius Chicago deep house, and so on - as well as audio musings on the effects of the Internet-driven news agenda (the superb, collage style cut-up "Social Media") and the nature of art itself ("21 Century Artist", a superb chunk of rubbery, soulful techno). For all the variety, it's the dancefloor-ready cuts that really sparkle, with the dreamy "Escapism", soul-flecked "All I Want To Say" and "These Times"- a brilliant hook-up with Lady Blaktronika - standing out.

They first performed the 150 minute score live in the museum's IMAX, which was commissioned by London's Science Museum in 2017. A Soundtrack For A Film arrives with artwork by British artist Haroon Mirza, adapted and arranged by Void in collaboration with illustrator Sam Moore. "Heart Of Data" and "Babel" were mixed by award-winning producer Marta Salogni. The box set includes the entire 2.5 reimagined score on four 12".

Review: Theo Conrad (better known for his work under the Paxton Fettel alias) has long been one of Greta Cottage Workshop's most intriguing artists. His first full-length for the Devon imprint, Everything Stays The Same, inhibited similar territory to the classic deep house/downtempo/soul/jazz fusion of fellow West Country dwellers The Rurals. This follow-up is, if anything, even better. Described by the label as "instrumental contemporary jazz-funk", the album sees Conrad combining loose jazz breaks and jazzy synths with the kind of rich grooves, fireside textures and dreamy electronics more often found in vintage deep house productions. It's a formula that results in a string of brilliant tracks.

Review: One for the Sam Shepherd completists here; the 2015 debut Floating Points LP, Elaeina, now available in US import edition via David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. We've been waiting on this one since "J&W Beat" six years ago; there's something about Floating Points sound that instantly lends itself to full-length album immersion. It's clear he feels this way too; using the album to delve deeper into electronic deconstructions and delicate ensemble arrangements. At its most adventurous and contemporary classical "Argente" is up there with Frahm, at is dreamiest and jazz-influenced "For Marmish" is a deeply cosmic affair with disparate chords making more sense than they perhaps should. At its most traditional Floating Points we hit the finale "Perotation Six" where the brushed drums are buried under layers of sound and elements in a way that's not dissimilar to Radiohead. Well worth the wait.

  1. Morning Side (20:11)
  2. Evening Side (19:38)
Review: Keiran Hebden rarely does things by halves, though it's still surprising to find that Morning/Evening, his eighth full-length, consists of two contrasting 20-minute explorations, each inspired by a time of day. "Morning" is, as you may expect, warm, bright and evocative, with intoxicating Eastern vocals, dreamy chords and various bursts of melodious instrumentation riding a rolling, jazz-flecked, soft touch deep house groove. It is, of course, intensely beautiful. Hebden largely disposes of the beats entirely on "Evening", delivering 15 minutes of picturesque electronic melodies and sunset-friendly ambience, before introducing a jazz-flecked house rhythm for the final five minutes. It, too, is a thing of great beauty

Review: It's that time of year again. 12 months on from his last album-length outing as FP-Oner, Fred P once again dons the alias for 7, a third numerically titled set in as many years. As usual, the music is rarely less than immaculate, with the imaginative and talented producer showcasing most sides of his musical personality. Highlights come thick and fast, from the yearning, soft focus melodiousness of quietly jazzy deep house opener "Smiles" and shimmering Motor City techno futurism of "Travelling Zones", to the blissful house minimalism of "Simple Things" and acid-flecked late night hypnotism of closer "Arigato". Superior electronic club music composed by a master: what more do you need?

Review: Prolific and long-serving Canadian producer Fred Everything is never one to rest on his laurels, but it's been no less than 10 years since he last released an album (the classic Lost Together on Om Records). Now he finally returns to the long player format on his own Lazy Days label with the appropriately titled Long Way Home, a widescreen exploration of his sound via all manner of styles. There's gorgeous broken beat and neo soul, slow-strutting electronic disco and modern boogie, and that's just the A side of this expansive 12-track album. Warm, immaculately produced and unafraid of embracing pop as much as underground styles, it's a masterful return from Mr. Everything.

Review: Given the brilliantly simple concept behind this fine compilation - contemporary Detroit producers remix Funkadelic - we're rather surprised nobody's done it before. With 17 varied re-rubs stretched across three slabs of wax, there's naturally plenty to enjoy. Highlights come thick and fast, from the deep house/P-funk fusion of Alton Miller's take on "Get Your Ass Off and Jam" and Andres' loose, hip-hop influenced revision of "Music For My Mother", to the thrusting loops and heady late night hypnotism of Anthony Shake Shakir and T-Dancer's version of "Standing on the Verge". While many of the versions stay relatively faithful to the original, the more "out-there" interpretations - see BMG's outer-space ambient dub of "Maggot Brain" and Moodymann's epic revision of "Cosmic Slop" - are also consistently impressive.
