Review: Rhadoo has long been in a class of his own when it comes to crafting intricately detailed minimal. Despite doing so for decades, he still finds freshness in his particular milieu, as he does again here on Secret Society, teaming up with multi-discipliniary artist and sound wizard Traian Chereches under the RH.CHER moniker. The cerebral 'Gwen' beings with liquid synths and gloopy sounds, dry hits and kicks and vocal swirls that infuse the whole thing with eerie soul. Giegling main man Edward brings a little more low-end heft to his remix, then 'Zero' gets more wobbly and busy with hiccuping sounds, swaggering drum rhythms and icy hi-hats all sure to sound huge at DC10 this summer. Cabanne remixes with a deft touch that keeps the silky minimal flowing going but with more edge.

Review: In 2003, deep in Croydon's Online Studios, the roots of proper tech house - we said *proper* tech house - were spreading underground. It was here that Evasive label head Rob joined forces with Simon Copleston, aka. Iteration X, for a fresh collaboration under the new alias Rob & Si. The project followed the underground momentum built by Iteration X's earlier 'Timecheck / Liquid Logic' EP, and merged the individual styles of both into a unified, forward-pulsing, projectile sound. The result was 'Roll One Up / Zebras', the 2003 two-tracker reminiscent of the sultry out-breaths characterising much of the 2-step garage that would emerge in parallel at the time. 'Zebraz' is an extra-special dubbing; an aposematic m(s)onochrome moving through various echos, stabs and what sound like field recordings of startled wildlife.

Review: Dungen Meat duo Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha deal in heavyweight, no-nonsense house and that is embodied in their label Slabs, which focuses on the deeper side of things and now welcomes Dutch talent Job de Jong for a stylish brace of cuts. 'Like This' draws from all over - dubwise vocal samples, percussion from garage, kicks from house music and echo from dub. It's a physical, bouncy sound for energising the dance floor without ever resorting to gimmicks. The late, great Phil Asher was such a fan, he jumped on the remix - his 'Restless Soul Dub' strips things back but keeps the warmth intact. Review: Karizma's latest offering proves that simple ingredients assembled with love and skill often yield the best results. There's nothing over-egged about Tech This Out, but its compelling less-is-more approach impressed label boss Atjazz so much he heralded the release as one of the "best underground house records ever made." Karizma, who hails from Maryland, has always been a master of rhythm and he proves it here as pulsing chords glide over loose-but-locked drums, rolling toms and sub-rooted bass. Pure and timeless, it grooves beautifully i and it's easy to see what got Atjazz so excited. His remix sounds mighty fine too, naturally leaning into the OG while adding some percussive depth, while the Yoruba Soul version strips things back further, with harmonic overdubs taking the arrangement for a meandering walk.

Review: Returning to Purple Print after contributing one to their second V/A, 'Dreaming In A Shell', Zenk links arms with Ted Amber for a new, formative four-track release. 'Nairobi Market' and its corresponding remix by Amber retread an apparent recent jaunt to Kenya, where a fantastical, mercantile mirage is said to have informed on the cyborg textures you hear here. 'Juicy Breakfast' takes and uses the dried viands bought on said market, amounting to a nice morning metal repast of nuts, bolts, and gluons: fatty acids, rivet potpourri, slippery background sound design. 'Memesis' titularly invokes the goddess of divine retribution but reduces her to an edible meme, as restless, posthuman vocalisations are heard to mutter and chirrup between snap-up beats.

Review: Since founding the admirable Scissor & Thread label 14 years ago, Francis "Frank" Harris and Anthony "Tony" Collins have made very few appearances on other labels - making this outing on Hamburg's masters of all things deep and dreamy, Smallville Records, a notable excursion. As befits both label and artist, the three tracks on offer are genuinely atmospheric and ultra-deep, albeit still blessed with enough groove and bottom-end oomph to titillate late-night and early morning dancefloors. For proof, check A-side 'Ways of Mine', with its yearning pads, warm bass, heady spoken word snippets, spacey electronics and locked-in beats. The quality threshold remains high on the flip, where the slow burning (and even deeper) 'After All' is joined by the intergalactic dancefloor drift of 'Dimension'.

Back in 2010, Peppermint Jam delivered an incredible set of revisions, which 15 years later has finally been given the reissue treatment. The EP begins with a superb -house-goes-soul take on 'Feeling You' courtesy of Henrik Schwarz (who was then at the peak of his dancefloor powers), before Triad delivers a smoother, deeper, and more gorgeously spaced-out flip of 'Stylin'. 'Memorandum', previously heard at Giegling events, opens with slow-moving pads and a narrow rhythmic range, relying on subtle modulation rather than arrangement shifts. 'Semper' continues with more drive i a stripped-back exercise in low-end pulse and restraint, built around clipped percussion and minimal harmonic information. The B-side features the edit of 'Mountain021.1', a long-circulating favourite that trades in delay-heavy loops and soft saturation, keeping the groove linear and open-ended. The new master preserves the original's softness without dulling its detail. It's not flashy, but it's durable i functional material that wears its age lightly.

Review: Miami-based house upstarts Sole Aspect Records welcome Life Recorder and Laak to take on their eighth EP. The former has been crafting deeply melodic and synth-laced house and techno soundscapes for some time and opens with 'Blues In Flight' which is all jacked-up beats and wispy, astral melodies and pads. Laak offers a more slinky and garage-infused sound on 'Apophis' and layers it up with twinkling modulations. Then comes a Laak Retroflex remix of the opener that reworks it into a deeper and more heads down sound before the Life Recorder House 2 Jazz mix of 'Apophis' explores cosmic jazz keys and shimmering deep house beats.

Now he flexes his muscle once more on the Lost Control label with an EP that investigates a whole different side to his sound. For this one, he sets his sights on future house music with a warm machine soul akin to the best of the Motor City. 'Azura' has deft, swirling synth pads up top, 'Exodive' then brings lithe drums and jazzy melodies with a cosmic twist while 'Heliopolis' is an elastic mix of drums and bass with serene pad work. Review: French label Phonogramme has released and reissued music by some true greats of house music, including Satoshi Tomiie, Dj Sneak, Rick Wade, Boo Williams and 21st century hero Byron The Aquarius. Now they've taken a deep dive into the colossal back catalogue of Paris's very own deep house/tech-house hero, Phil Weeks, and picked three 'rare tracks' that deserve airings on contemporary dancefloors. Up first is 2014 cut 'Live At Palladium', a lolloping chunk of loopy, sample-rich deep house excellent rich in locked-in bass, heady Marvin Gaye vocal snippets and warming electric piano riffs. Over on the reverse we're treated to 2011 classic 'Jack To My Groove', a sweat-soaked box jam built on a killer groove, and another 2014 workout, the more low-slung and bass-heavy house science of 'It's The Inside That Counts'.

Review: UK deep delvers Soul Quest are raring to set 2025 right, after an inaugural 2024 spent establishing their footing in V/A selections comps of a higher-grade but still playful character. A wicked year so far has heard them incant two especial EPs from Jean-Jez and Max Sinal, and that's not to mention another heater V/A of their own: the three-a-sider 'Maintain Attitude'. Now five further remixes of Sinal's earlier 'Intentions' setpiece surface, ringing out the room by way of careful and frequent attention, paid to the track by Frits Wentink, JT Donaldson and Flying Moth. The Live Mix from Sinal at the end is also second to none, its rapid-echo plucks a treat.

Review: Having spent the formative years of his career delivering dusty deep house cuts and hazy techno jams as Samuel, Sam Smith has really hit his stride since donning the Ploy alias at the tail end of the last decade. Here he takes time out from releasing on his own Deaf Test imprint and pal Batu's Timedance outlet to deliver his first outing on Ryan Elliot's Faith Beat imprint. He begins in full-throttle, UKG-influenced mode on 'Flirt' - all warped bass, skippy drums and glassy-eyed musical motifs - before opting for a more bumpin', sample-heavy sound on the sweat-soaked joy of 'Woman (Thank You)'. Over on the flip, Smith charges between the big room, Junior Vasquez-influenced tribal house heaviness of 'Love Song', the shoulder-swinging UKG flex of 'I Need You', and the immersive dark house psychedelia of 'Prayer Hands'.

Review: Detroit don Norm Talley is as consistent as they come in house music circles. Despite a fine catalogue of cool cuts, 'Cosmic Wave' is his standout and a clear fan favourite. It dropped back in 2010 but has been reissued many times on different labels, this time on his own Upstaris Aslum. It's the very essence of stripped-back and functional house/techno but with an impossibly impactful machine soul, the drums, synth waves and percussion all looping infinitely. But within that endless repetition there is beauty, hypnosis, and catharsis to be found. Sheer class, before you even get into the shimmering, sublimely gliding remix from Luke Hess & Brian Kage and the sparser 'Cosmic Reality', all stop/start funkiness rooted down by massive electronic handclaps.

Review: Bristol's Boulderhead has been making some serious moves on the likes of Sex Tapes From Mars, Worm and Rhythm Section and now shows yet another subtly different side to his sound on the cultured Mindhelmet. 'Feelin' OK' has a phased and fragment vocal that marbles the fat-assed dub tech groove as abstract synth daubs add the colour. 'I Gotta Work' (feat Overnite Oats) is another synthetic sound with whispered vocals and a future tech groove while 'Red Purple Pink' (feat Overnite Oats) rides on a fleshy, subby low end with gooey synths hanging in the air above. A trio of mind melting tech outings on the flip including the bubbly 'Late Nite Bopper' make this a must-cop for late night sessions with discerning heads.

Review: Ever-reliable Detroit veteran Rick Wade returns to the equally on-point Rawax with a suitably bumping set of house cuts. The 'Night Trackin' EP kicks off with the brilliantly titled 'Angry Jazz', where dusty drums and murky bass notes drive sinister funk synths in a determined dancefloor direction. 'Night Track' sees jazzy chords floating over shuffling beats and low-slung bass for a heads-down moment of introspection, before the glistening vibes melody on 'Your Love' and soul-rich vocal add a little honey to the ho-ho pot. Finally, the vintage soul samples of 'I Can't Take It' loop into infinity, with rugged drums powering the relentlessly funky groove.
