The Rapture Pt III (B-STOCK)
Cat: KM 066 (B-STOCK). Rel: 01 Jan 90
&ME & Black Coffee - "The Rapture Pt III" (8:06)
&ME - "LIFE" (7:35)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creased sleeve, warped record***

&Me and Black Coffee make for something of an Afro house dream team here. The latter has long been this sound's pin-up and has gone from playing in South African townships to producing with Beyonce and winning Grammy Awards over the last decade. Now deep in his latest Ibiza season, he unveils collaborative track 'The Rapture' (Pt III), a deep rolling cut with spine-tingling chords and a rich atmosphere. &ME then goes solo for 'LIFE', a shuffling percussive groove with spoken words and enchanting chords to make for a classy two-tracker.

Night Passage (Underground radio mix) (6:04)
Fast City (4:55)
Night Passage (Magic club mix) (5:12)
Night Passage (Bongo mix) (5:09)
Review: The reissue of Night Passage by 49th Floor on Vibraphone Records is a testament to the label's commitment to quality deep house music. Originally released in 1992 as an Italian ambient house track, 'Night Passage' has been resurrected with identical tracklist as the original, which should delight fans. The Underground Radio Mix kicks off the release with its deep house rhythm and nostalgic piano melodies, capturing the essence of the original while infusing it with a contemporary groove. 'Fast City' adds a nice touch of Balearic flair to the EP, offering a deeper and more atmospheric vibe. On the flip side, the Magic Club Mix of 'Night Passage' elevates the track to peak-time dancefloor status with its infectious energy and pulsating beats. Finally, the Bongo Mix brings a percussive twist to the proceedings, injecting an extra layer of groove into the mix. Overall, 'Night Passage', is a great example at the ideal style of music that blossoming on the underground that perfectly fit the scenery in the Mediterranean.

Bad Sector (Miles Ellis remix) (5:38)
Space Draft (Karaba remix) (6:15)
Review: Accented Measures Series (AMS) is a still relatively new series that has been compiled and arranged by Accented Measures and is designed to deal in unreleased and new music from some of the scene's key names. The Space Drift Remixes EP is next up the series with a combination of 90s vibes and modern grooves. '97NY' (TC80 remix) is heads down and raw as you like tech. 'Aeons' (Pedro Goya remix) rather spins you out on more silky cosmic pads and the Miles Ellis remix of 'Bad Sector' is thudding tech with rigid drums and washes of sugary synth. 'Space Draft' (Karaba remix) begins some serenity and smoothness to the final cut.

Review: Cult German club Bar 25 had a great spot down by the river and an organic, boho vibe. It has long since carried that over into its label which deals in contemporary minimal from a wide range of producers. The rather incredible 200th release is now here and is a various artists affair that starts with Aiwaska's 'Tip' which is dark and driving. Elsewhere an Omeria remix of Kaiser Waldon is more deep and Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' gets a textured and chugging Nicone Acid Disco Nana remix. Last but not least is a Pablo Bolivar Remake with dubbed-out deepness.

Review: German label and once-cult club Bar 25 is making its 200th release with a series of remixes. The EP comes in different formats with this being a limited edition purple marbled 12" with a special postcard included. Aiwaska's 'Tip' delivers a dark and driving energy, setting a fine tone for the release from the off. Meanwhile, Omeria's remix of Kaiser Waldon takes a deeper approach, creating a rich and immersive soundscape. Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' receives a textured and chugging transformation with Nicone's Acid Disco Nana remix. Catacombs2 (12:29)
Globus (8:53)
Review: The most surprising release this week comes from Thomas Melchior's newly inaugurated My King Is Light label, presenting its sophomore release courtesy of veteran U.S. producer Amir Alexander. The Vanguard Sound main man isn't usually known for his minimal house exploits, but sure proves his talent for it here on the 'Wisdom' EP. A side "Catacombs2" treads along a ghostly trail similar to Melchior's own work, with all its deep and hypnotic elements aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip, we have the lean and subtle groove of "Globus" which continues with the arcane and 'magickal' vibes; its bouncy melodic bass works your feet, while the warped/operatic vocal tones flip your mind!

Review: Alich's take on house is kinetic and restless. It's ever on the move so is perfect for keeping dancers guessing as it draws on electro, minimal and tech for its vibes. This new one on Griffe is a future facing EP packed with cosmic colour. Find Your Quest (Orion Talis mix) kicks off with some high-intensity drum loops and lashing synths while 'Reinhardt' (Djangoes dub) has glistening leads and funky drum patterns. 'Wicked Force Path' is a jacked up and percussive number with liquid bass and closer 'Distance' has broad synth smears that dose you in vibes.

Chair Fix (10:27)
Digerital (6:14)
Klenkl (6:44)
Review: Rob Amboule makes a compelling debut on Raum... musik with his 'Digerital' EP, offering a fusion of minimal, techno, and progressive trance. The three tracks exhibit Amboule's mature musical ideas and finely tuned production skills, with 'Chairfix' setting expectations with its hypnotic intro morphing into stompy, pulsating techno, evoking a state of rave euphoria and the title track offering a more banging four-to-the-floor techno with atmospheric elements and nods to acid and progressive trance. Closer 'Klenkl', meanwhile, continues the hypno heady grooves and arrangements. Amboule pays homage to the golden age of ravey techno and trance, reinterpreting these genres for modern audiences. Raum... musik's 117th release solidifies its reputation as a quality label for introducing fresh talent and pushing boundaries in electronic music.

Review: UK tech house legend Mark Ambrose is now back with a third volume of his The Journey series on Richard Davis' reissue label Repeat. The revered veteran crafted plenty of the genre's best and most unique sounds and you can revisit three of them now. 'Acid' is a slow, deep and meandering monster with rubbery bass and undulating 303 lines. 'The Ghoulash Monster From Outer Space' is a more dark and tribal, chunky and sci-fi sound with rich sound designs and eerie atmospheres and '5 AM' closes on a serene deep tech groove. Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear and Marcel Dettmann are just some of the names who have played these jams over the years, which is a testament to their quality.

Octave & Nicolas Duvoisin - "Wanna Be Down" (6:53)
Zenk - "Dreaming In A Shell" (7:53)
Review: Purple Print has become a strong player in the minimal scene in a short space of time, with the likes of Sepp, Delaj, Bisharat and Vid all offering their considerable wares into the growing catalogue since 2021. Their compilation 12" was just as on-point in 2023, and now they're back with a second volume which is not to be missed. Avidel leads the way with the seductive, vocal laced groover 'Someone', while Lukea follows up with a dub techno-tinted workout entitled 'Crescent Moon'. Octave and Nicolas Duvoisin do some smart r&b sampling for undulating roller 'Wanna Be Down' and Zenk creates a sparkling sunrise reverie with 'Dreaming In A Shell', a stripped back but detailed and distinctive workout which ends the record on a high note.

Review: The ever-impossible to pin down Shall Not Fade label welcomes back Baltra for a first EP since his last full outing in 2019. The NYC artist's Dreaming Of A Disco EP manages to be both fuzzy, lo-fi and nostalgic but also forward looking and fresh. He opens with hazy disco loops and shimmering 80s chords underpinned by a funky bassline that cannot fail to hook you in. There's a more pumping and sweaty house groove on 'Imaginary Laughter', blissed out Balearic vibes on 'Private Paradise' and gorgeously airy and organic jazz-funk stylings layered over a nice raw four-four beat on closer 'Sunset Jam.'

Antelia (8:26)
Review: Turkish producer Barut debuts four new minimal tech tools for Sintope's offshoot vinyl series. The 'Antelia' EP starts out functionally enough, but grows increasingly dreamy and awestruck as it progresses. We begin with the expository FM funk of 'Ilanto Zur', but before long find ourselves submerged in the far larger, nigh-gargantuan stellar planes of 'Ramana'. Finally, closer 'Antelia' is a relative curveball in sound compared to the earlier tunes, deftly working in ethereal vocal improv and swelling Vangelis pads into a beautiful electrance sendoff.

This release is a four-track feast of forward-thinking techno, bass, and unexpected dance delights. 'Fatzer' stands out with its high-energy minimal techno, paying homage to mid-90s techno with breakbeat influences. This track is a vibrant nod to an era where breaks reigned supreme. Other highlights include: 'Omuera Bamba' that blends techno, house and fun, delivering an energetic and eclectic mix that embodies Batenko's flirty, freaky mastery. Each track in Gamma Ray Bursts is laden with tweaked tools, locked grooves, and momentary euphoria for dance addicts and a favorite among DJs worldwide.

Review: Scottish party starter Sally C is behind the bolshy brilliance of the Big Saldo's Chunkers label. So far the releases have come at a steady rate but have always been of utmost quality. Bella takes care of the label's fourth outing and it's another peak time outing full of big fun. 'Note To Self' is a mix of potent breaks, trance chords and rave energy where 'Orchestra Spring' is more direct and bouncy with a rugged bassline pumping the breaks and 'Odd Symphony' then slips into a deeper vibe still but one that is no less dynamic. An Olsvanger remix of the same tune takes it into mind-melting late night afterparty territory.

New Jersey-born Ali Berger is a drum machine specialist and low-key US electronic music standby, now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music runs deep, with over 60 releases on his Trackland label and EPs on imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias, all resulting from a lovingly-cultivated studio approach which respects improvisation as a spiritual practice. Here with this sublime release on Scissors and Thread, Serious, Berger collects tracks "from the last three years, plus 0221 (Serious Mix) from 2018", portraying the pursuit of an art form (techno, house) that demands that one take oneself seriously, whilst also periodically calling that sense of self-seriousness into question. As stated by Berger, there is a sense of deep melancholy that runs throughout the record, whether on the watery functions of 'Tape Jam (Pt. 2)' or the sparse synth-keyed movements of 'A New World To Forget'; they seem to reflect the feeling of happily pensive dog days, of arriving at new insights that wouldn't have been discovered had one not endured them.

Review: Nicholas Bicycle aka Nick Bike hops on some fine rhythms once more here for the Chosen Spokes label. As always he deals only in pure gold and this time he reworks a classic 80s gem into two different versions. Already well road-tested by the likes of DJ Marky in Brazil to great results, this 7" is pure bait for summer sessions. 'Ain't Shocka' is the first version with chattery claps and plenty of the original vocals and melodies left in place over funk drums. 'Shocka King' gives it a much brighter make over with melodies shipped in from another 80s disco gem by Evelyn "Champagne" King to make it even more irresistible.

He's used the opportunity to create an all-exclusives mix which showcases his own work, that of established names like Gui Boratto and Rodriguez Jr and also a host of emergent talent he has discovered through his work as a mastering engineer.

Side-1 features 'Good Times,' a track that starts simply but evolves with a bumping bassline, bleeps and squelches. Its choppy, jacking beats, punchy snares, gritty synths, and rolling bass create a dancefloor powerhouse, flipping midway for a roof-raising moment. On Side-2 brings 'Beat Machine,' an eerie blend of house and pop, with moody synths, growling sub-bass, and haunting vocals from Lil Prince. Included and not on the original is the new Baldov remix of 'Typical of You' which adds extra heat, making this release a strongest reissues in recent weeks.

Review: Last year, Confidence Man returned to action with a single that asked a simple question: "does it make you feel good?" The answer, of course, was yes, and it would be fair to say that this new set of remixes is equally positive in tone. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson handle side A, successfully re-imagining the track as a warm, dreamy and bass-heavy chunk of crunchy breakbeat house powered forward by a classic hip-house break. The mix is available in both vocal and instrumental variations, with the former arguably being the more impactful of the two. Over on side B, Mind Enterprises delivers a thumping, Italo-disco style take, while CC Disco and DJ Boring join forces on a chunky, forthright house mix that draws inspiration from 1990s US garage dubs.

Review: So, after all the hype, social media arguments and YouTube parodies, here it is: the most talked about dance album of 2013. By now you should all know the story: Daft Punk do old-fashioned disco-pop with the help of a legion of high profile guests and collaborators. So is Random Access Memories any good? Certainly, it's a fine pop album; lavishly produced fare with an authentic, organic swing that benefits enormously from Chic man Nile Rodgers' distinctive guitar work. At it's best, such as on the goodtime disco rush of "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself to Dance" (both featuring agorgeous vocals for Pharrell Williams), or the quirky but brilliant "Girorgio by Moroder", it's impeccable.

For the most part, what we get is remixes of tracks from the then-fresh Discovery LP, with highlights including the Neptunes' deep, warming, electro-meets-hip-hop revision of 'Harder, Better, Faster, Sronger' (complete with additional Pharrell vocals), a hard and loopy 'French touch' revision of 'Face To Face' from Demon, Slum Village's woozy electronic hip-hop take on 'Aerodynamic', a carnival-ready Basement Jazz tweak of Homework fave 'Phoenix' and a beat-less, guitar-and-voice cover of 'One More Time' courtesy of Romanthony.

Review: Chez Damier and Stacey Pullen's 'Forever Monna' is a stone-cold US house classic. It gets reissued every few years and never disappoints. A perennial favourite in DJ sets, this 2021 edition includes the original as well as a couple of different mixes. It's the firefly-like lead synths that stand it apart - they leave long tails in their wake and fill you with joy as the simple but effective, deep yet driving drums power things along below. As well as Deep Mix that brings the toms and congas front and centre, Ron & Chez's remastered mix-ups the pace and sense of shuffle, then a rex Club mix gets booty shaking with its big, busted bass and chunky tribal drums.

Review: DC Salas is the nom de plume for Diego Cortez Salas, a Belgian producer who has been turning heads recently for essential releases on LARJ, R.A.N.D., Pets and Futureboogie. He's now stepping up to the A Lifetime On The Hips label with five fresh drops of vibrant, exuberant hardware-style house music with a strong melodic footing. 'Tio' is steeped in sentiment thanks to its simple but heart-rending lead synth line, making for a perfect track to see out a peak time set in emotional style. 'Never Ending Story' is another stand out on the record with its dramatic trance breakdown and a deadly drop when it's time to get down.

Joel Zimmerman, known as deadmau5, has cemented his place in the EDM world with his iconic third album, Random Album Title. Recently reissued, this album continues to earn new listeners with its unique blend of atmospheric beats and melodic intricacy. The album opens with 'Sometimes Things Get, Whatever,' setting a dark and atmospheric tone that pervades much of the record. Tracks like 'Complications' and 'Slip' have dizzying melodies and seamless transitions. 'Brazil (2nd Edit)' and 'Alone With You' highlight his ability to craft uplifting anthems, with the latter offering a nostalgic, almost melancholic vibe. 'I Remember,' co-produced with Kaskade, stands out with Haley Gibby's haunting vocals and impeccable transitions, making it a timeless hit. 'Faxing Berlin,' 'Arguru,' and 'Not Exactly' are other simple yet effective beats with memorable melodies.

Review: Kevin Dennis Pierre has been making high-grade house music as Demuir since the dawn of the Millennium, in the process notching up releases on such imprints as Robsoul Recordings, Stickman, Nite Grooves, Farris Wheel, Heist, Kaoz Theory and Hot Creations. Here the Toronto-based producer brings his brand of club-ready deep house to France's Frappe Recordings, flitting between driving, mind-bending peak-time hedonism ('The Music In Space'), jazzy and sample-rich goodness ('Enter The House of My Lord') and revivalist Chicago 'boompty' (the early 2000s Classic Music Company style 'First Look In San Diego'). Pierre's old pal DJ Sneak rounds things off with a deliciously sleazy, weighty and sub-heavy interpretation of 'The Music In Space' with added low-end sax stabs.

Review: The Jooice label returns with regular artist Deyayu on four more raw minimal cuts. 'Sexual Desire' pairs nagging synth leads the burrow deep with slinky tech house drums. There is more zip to 'Mental Effect' which flashes with cosmic melody as dystopian tension rises up from below. 'The Light Device' has a more playful edge and a disco-tech feel with its balmy pads and last but not least is the 80s-referencing electro cruise that is 'Modern Primitive' with its squelchy acid bassline. All four of these bring plenty of synth craft and cosmic freshness to the party.

Review: Perhaps a universal language is something we can never achieve, or at least, stories such as the Tower of Babel suggest. But temporary simulacra of such fancies may be aspired to, not to mention sick Balearic records calling for them. Here Ibiza mainstays DJ Pippi and Willie Graff team up for a swell full-length record, displaying an ingenious shared ear for the combo of live instrumentation, sampling and club-ready mixing. Some 12 tracks escort us through the duo's manifold styles, honed over the course of 17 years and modulated with subtle layers of eloquent instrumentation and effervescent synths.

Review: New imprint Aliens on Wax will be a label to watch this year, with the Chicago-based stable promising releases from the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Roland Clark and Bad Boy Bill. Fittingly, it's a long-serving hometown hero - the one and only DJ Sneak - who inaugurates the imprint via a typically club-focused four-tracker. He begins with 'Gettin' Ghetto', a rolling and hypnotic house loop jam in his familiar style, before opting for stomping drums, raw electronic motifs, sweat-soaked percussion fills and effects aplenty on the breathless and trippy 'I Beat That Ghetto'. Over on the reverse we're treated to two takes on 'Spirit Taker': a deliciously tracky, psychedelic and warehouse-ready 'Dub' (track 3) and the marginally more action-packed original version (track 4).

Review: De La Isla EP marks a compelling debut for Espiritu Recordings, showcasing Dojo Zone's versatile production prowess across five tracks. 'Dream Body (Exotica Mix)' kicks off with a potent blend of techno and progressive house, a dynamic journey through pulsating beats and twisted mood swings. 'Houdini Hauz' follows suit, infusing 80s-inspired sounds into a modern tech house, resulting in a groove-laden sonic landscape reminiscent of new wave aesthetics. The EP takes a detour with 'Obscure Entrance,' paying homage to Detroit's rhythmic heritage with its bubbling acid lines and 808 state-esque sounds. 'Bandu Bandu' is another goodie, that ventures deeper into the realms of futurism, with its serious and contemplative tones layered over intricate textures, offering a profound listening experience. Dojo Zone's masterful fusion of retro influences with contemporary production techniques makes this inaugural release from Espiritu Recordings a promising start for the label, setting high expectations for future endeavors.

Review: Ranges welcomes Elias with an exclusive dub EP, ‘FM Therapy’. Suggesting that the from-scratch process of sound creation through FM synthesis is so bare-bones as to be therapeutic, we’re impressed by this EP’s ability to transcend the received idea of the FM synth as a mere knocky monotone. The A-Side opens with the expansive soundscapes of ‘Aquatic', followed by a beautifully designed 4/4 action sequence in 'Red Lantern'. The B emphasises faster shades of dub, with ‘Severe' delivering a reminiscent chord and peaktime escape notes, before 'FM Therapy' and ‘Fog’ shed any former human essentialisms with ever-colder and evermore militant soundscapes.

Review: Four months on from its last outing, a gorgeous EP featuring tracks from a quartet of talented deep house producers, Madrid's Mate label returns with an action-packed showcase of tracks from Evenn and DFRA. It's the former who gets things going on side A, confidently striding between the seductively soulful New Jersey deep house warmth of 'Trip After The Club', the rushing piano-house excitement of 'Organic Love' and the bumpin', bass-heavy, vibraphone-sporting cheeriness of 'Breakin' Rules'. Over on side B, DFRA gets nostalgic on the gospel-tinged, organ and piano-laden 90s Italian house joy of 'Heaven', before heading for more hypnotising territory on the heady lusciousness of 'Albatros'. Finally, the producer doffs a cap to Italian great Don Carlos on 'Blue Moon'.
