Ocean Me
Ocean Me (12")
Cat: MOUNTAIN 018. Rel: 04 Oct 21
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Iterate (5:46)
  2. Eau Vive (5:52)
  3. Ocean Me (6:33)
Review: In recent times, Andre "Rozzo" Schmid and Philippe 'Serafin' Egger have used their Mountain People project to deliver rolling, analogue-rich blends of deep house and tech-house. On their latest 12", they've built on these solid foundations by throwing elements of other electronic styles into the mix too. For proof, check opener 'Iterate', a tough, stripped-back electro number rich in pulsing acid bass, hissing cymbals, vocoder vocal snippets and drum machine cowbells, and the rubbery, jazz-funk influenced, intergalactic house shuffle of 'Eau Vive'. Arguably best of all though is title track 'Ocean Me', a warming, analogue-heavy number that sees them add Snivilisation-era Orbital style melodies, yearning chords and squelchy bass to a crispy drum track.

MOUNTAIN 017
Cat: MOUNTAIN 017. Rel: 29 Apr 21
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Mountain 017 1 (6:32)
  2. Mountain 017 2 (8:53)
Review: Andre Schmid (aka Rozzo) and Philippe Egger (aka Serafin) have been reaching many a deep house summit as The Mountain People ever since 2006. What they do isn't game changing, but it is s excellent executed that it always proves irresistible to both DJs and dancers. This latest EP is a case in point: 'Mountain 017 1' is simple but effective European deep house. The baseline is warm and rich, the drums have enough funk to them to draw you in each and every time. 'Mountain 017 2' strikes a perfect balance between tension and release, trapping you in unresolved lops then teasing with a hint or warm pad or hooky little hit. Gorgeous.

MOUNTAIN 015
Cat: MOUNTAIN 015. Rel: 18 Mar 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Track (8:17)
  2. Track 2 (6:48)
  3. Track 3 (6:48)
Review: The Mountain People have a cult status amongst minimal house heads for good reason - their approach feeds the scene's finest parties, but they always retain a certain kink in their tracks that deviates from formulaic genre studies. So it goes on this latest drop on their own label, which leads in with a stunning long form track that packs a nuanced groove into the low end and plays with a limber acid line over the top, holding the filter down low and only opening it up at the choicest of moments. There's also some bouncier, swinging monosynth machine funk to be enjoyed, all executed with originality and subtlety - essential ingredients for the best minimal house.
