Review: Stroom's latest must-have set takes a trawl through the sparse but inspired back catalogue of 19 Gadi Pirms Sakuma, an impossible-to-pigeonhole Latvian band operative in the late 1980s and early 90s. Gathering together a mixture of previously released and never-before-heard material, "19 Years Before The Beginning" brilliantly showcases the band's unique mix of skewed synth-pop, unusual instrumentation (bassoon anyone?), near Balearic grooves, nods to Western dance music and tipsy post-electro. There's much to enjoy throughout, not least the stylish musical eccentricity that marked out the band as one of Eastern Europe's most intriguing musical exports at the tail end of the Soviet era.

Review: Into The Light's latest deep dive into the world of obscure Greek electronic music focuses on 2 Katara, a previously virtually unknown collaboration between George Theodorakis and Dimitris Papangelidis. The pair first joined forces in 1978 and continued to record together until going their separate ways in 1991. The 14 tracks showcased here are surprisingly eclectic but never less than superb, variously touching on delay-laden fusions of progressive rock and early electronic pop, new age ambience, drum-heavy dancefloor workouts, eccentric disco-not-disco and intergalactic synth-scapes. There's far more use of traditional Greek instrumentation and electric guitars than you might expect, but this only enhances the enjoyable quirkiness of the whole package.

Review: There was a little of Talking Heads about 3 Teens Kill 4, an arty, post-punk combo whose 1983 album No Motive has long been a favourite with dusty-fingered crate diggers. As this Dark Entries reissue proves, the band's vocal style, musical arrangements and love of madcap stylistic fusions drew heavily of David Byrne and company's open-minded and singular approach. This is perhaps most evident on the low-slung dub disco outing "5/4", stripped-back bass-and-drum machine jam "Hut/Bean Song" (whose odd lyrics discuss shaking cans of baked beans) and sample-heavy fuzziness of "Tell Me Something Good". Brilliantly, this edition also features two previously unreleased tracks that were left off the original album.

Review: Belgian reissue imprint Stroom are back with more retro obscurities, this time in the form of 48 Cameras: the brainchild and life project of self-proclaimed non-musician Jean-Marie Mathoul. After hearing an album of William S. Burroughs reciting poetry, Mathoul decided to put poems and spoken word to music. He was a poet in his own right, having already published a book of poems. At a literary event in Liege, he met UK-based writer Paul Buck (author of the novel The Honeymoon Killers) and the two of them decided to collaborate - and thus formed 48C. Mathoul was said to have built the album in his mind, long before starting the recording process, which involved something of a 'non-band'. The musicians and collaborators never actually recorded together, and to this day some haven't even met each other. Jean-Marie Mathoul sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 66.

Review: 7FO's Ryu no Nukegara (meaning "dragon's husk") is a warm, inviting trip through ambient, dub and chill-out soundscapes. The Osaka-based producer blends sparse electronic percussion with dub-style synth bass and pentatonic melodies, while also using steel pan tones that bring an Okinawan or Southeast Asian touch. Fans of Haruomi Hosono and Equiknoxx will find much to love in this record's trans-oceanic textures with sparkling dub processing and thoughtful mixing throughout. A magical record that embodies strength, fluidity and meditative depth.

Review: A Certain Ratio's core trio of drummer Donald Johnson, bassist/vocalist Jez Kerr, and multi-instrumentalist Martin Moscrop make ACR Loco a perfectly fluid and funk album. In fact, on this, their first album in more than ten years, the Manchester post-punk outfit are as funky as they have ever been. Their tried and tested sound gets nicely updated with modern beat driven sounds and plenty of redefines to today's political strife in the lyrics. There are plenty of smooth and cool synth led grooves like 'Get A Grip' and messages of unity on 'Family' that we can all relate to.

Review: Attack Decay Sustain Release (ADSR) originated as Todd Nickolas and Dominic Paterson's synthesiser project during high school and was conducted in the serene surroundings of Todd's family farm in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Amidst the pastoral setting, natural sounds intertwined with the hum of machinery. Inspired by CBC Radio's Brave New Waves program, they soaked up diverse musical influences from ELO's futuristic rock to Skinny Puppy's electronic body music. Now, unearthed cassette recordings from this era offer a nostalgic glimpse into their fearless exploration. Curated by Todd and Linus Booth, this collection embodies their spirit of discovery and experimentation back between the years of 1987 and 1991.

Review: The Way Things Fall sees the enduring Detroit electro pair Adult return with their fifth studio album and their first in some six years. Fans of their output will be thankful this album even exists as Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus apparently had little intention to add another long player to their discography when they entered a studio in Detroit last year to record the two track Cover(s) 12" for Ghostly International. Finding their creative batteries recharged, Adult was fully reborn and Miller and Kuperus are on fine form here. Tracks like "Heartbreak" and "At The End Of It All" will have Fil Ok and JoJo De Freq considering a Nag Nag Nag revival, whilst "Tonight We Fall" agitates with post punk menace yet intermittently dovetails into joyous fuzzy synth territory. Extending their range further "New Frustration" and "Love Lies" could be mistaken for Das Ding collaborating with Desire and overall Adult fans will find it hard to resist the album's charms.

Review: The judicious Minimal Wave clan deliver another brilliant compilation of rare and wonderful music from the 1980's, this time an anthology of the best work from Japanese artiste Tomo Akikawabaya. Sourcing these songs in their original format has become harder and harder over the years, so they've really done us a favour with this effort. The double LP is made up of loneseom drones, lo-fi drum machine grooves and gorgeous synth work, all coated in Akikawabaya's wonderful vocal stance. The Japanese artiste has a unique style that borders on the melancholic, yet her music is always charged by a driving, proto techno feel. This is one to check if you weren't in the know.

Review: Who, or perhaps what, was Tomo Akikawabaya? In truth, nobody really seems to sure on the answer, other than the fact this mysterious Japanese artists decided to release a serious of incredible synth-driven singles during the 1980s, before vanishing back into the dry ice of whatever smoke machine they escaped from. A musical genie, here only to bestow a limited number of gems on us, and then disappear forever. Swerving interviews and photos doesn't help the search, but The Castle II at least allows us to explore his work in depth, across several tracks. These range from the twisted cabaret weirds of 'Objet D'Amour', to the driving electro-punk of 'Le Voleur', grand and decidedly 1980s-sounding synth rock on 'The April', and New Romantic-esque pop on The Castle (II). Essential stuff.

Review: Active between 1982 and 1994, Chicago duo Alebra Suicide was a unique proposition. Comprised of deadpan spoken word vocalist Lydia Tomkiw and guitarist Don Hedeker, the pair won plenty of plaudits for their unique blend of lo-fi drum machines rhythms, sparse post-punk guitar motifs, sequenced synthesizers and distinctive vocals. "Still Life" - the second retrospective of their curious career from Dark Entries - offers a neat introduction to their strange sonic world, drawing on cuts from a multitude of forgotten albums and singles. It's well worth picking up, if only to admire the undoubted brilliance of the pair's unique fusion of styles and sounds.

Review: Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artists Allie X - real name Alexandra Ashley Hughes - is a great representative for the resurgent live electro-synth scene. Emerging from the Toronto indie circuit in the mid-2000s, it was a relocation to Los Angeles, a heartland for neon sounds, and early work with producers Circuit and Billboard that first saw an identity begin to form, which is as retro as it is futuristic, picking up scores of fans along the way, including Katie Perry no less. Girl With No Face is her latest long form, and sees the artist again stick her flag confidently in the ground. Tunes bounce, track, soar, step, pump and - at times - fall apart, emotionally speaking, with clear references to the likes of Ladyhawke, Madonna, Kraftwerk, Cocteau Twins and a-Ha, among others. Definitely one to watch, if you're not already.

Review: Instrumental synth pop producer Gozen Atila, AKA Anadol - named after an old Turkish car company - has been building a stellar reputation for herself as a purveyor of 1970s and 1980s influenced electronic soundscapes since her first full length, curuyen Yillar (Rotting Years), turned heads among press and public alike in 2012. Plenty has come between then and now, but finally we're given Hatiralar, a record that was made around the same time as her debut but has never before seen the light of day. Informed by the experimental European and Eurasian movie scores of decades past, fans of Bruce Haack and The Space Lady will find much to fall head over heels for here, touching on naive keyboard chart hits from outside the Western music industry, kosmische, science fiction sounds and obscure electro forms, it's a strange but enticing trip into another world.

Review: An intriguing confection put together by two Antipodean crate-diggers with an ear for the eccentricities and heroic creative travails of a generation of yore, 'Midnight Spares' chronicles a predominantly '80s era in which bedroom musicians took a post-punk DIY sensibility to create work that still rings out with originality and ingenuity decades on. Collected from manifold unusual sources, this compendium takes in early synth-pop, menacing lo-fi soundtrack work, a stray emigre member of The Flying Pickets, and even an early foray into recording from the members of legendary Ozpunk scamps God. Lurking somewhere between the spirit of John Peel and the world of outsider art, the resulting assemblage is a must-have for chroniclers of the weird and wonderful.

Review: Cititrax proudly presents the debut LP from Another Body Found here, which is the latest moniker of A// who is well known for his pioneering work as Le Syndicat Electronique. Emerging from the French underground with a dark electro, industrial, minimal synth and wave style, he has a stark and visceral take on raw energy and haunting atmospheres. There are plenty of mechanical, hypnotic beats here with heft bass and hints of dystopian fears. The title track reimagines Bronski Beat's 'Smalltown Boy' and strips it to its emotional core, 'Lost In The Northern Lights' has a cold, urgent sound and 'Murderous Earth' is brilliantly unsettling and melancholic.

Review: Arte Moderno was a short-lived outfit from the Canary Islands who scored an underground dancefloor hit in 1982 with the spaced-out punk-funk/new wave/dub disco grooves of "Ninette En New York" before all but disappearing. Here, we finally get a chance to hear what else they were up to, as Musica Cabeza - the debut album they recorded but then shelved in 1982, finally gets a release. It's a quietly impressive set, all told, offering up tracks that doff a cap to the likes of Talking Heads, Woo, Konk and Bauhaus, while also offering a fresh take on electric/electronic post-punk fusion. Had it been released when it was recorded there's no doubt it would have become an underground classic; now that it's finally seen the light of day, we can confirm it's every bit as good as we'd hoped for.

Review: The Barcelona based Domestica Records continue to impress with their reissue programme, switching the focus to 1980s Australia and Melbourne group Artificial Organs. Evolving out of the city's avant-garde scene centred in creative incubator The Organ Factory, Artificial Organs were formed by Ian Forrest and Laurie McRae and with the help of musician friends (including a young Crowded House band member Nick Seymour) explored the potentials of innovative consumer tools for music and recording including Casio keyboards and drum machines, Korg synthesizers, Syndrums and the Akai four-track, quarter inch tape deck. Momenti Mori was the group's sole release, collating recordings from these sessions held between 1980-81 on a ten track cassette which appears in full on this wonderful reissue from Domestica.

Review: Attraktors originally surfaced back in 2015 with the Future Systems EP. Made up of members of Six.By.Seven, Bivouac, The Selecter and more besides. Now this eclectic group of coldwave connoisseurs fold that initial EP into a raft of new songs to make up a sterling debut album for Vivod. It's brittle, homespun stuff that opens up a wormhole to the bedroom studio explosion of the 1980s, when lo-fi new wave was king. But there are other dimensions to this record, like the dreamy synth pop of "Mensonge Et La Chute" and the cosmic rock stylings of "Theme From Unknown". For all lovers of the early to mid '80s era, this is an album you won't want to miss.

Review: Until recently Moscoman's Disco Halal label had focused on offering up some prime edits for the more open-minded DJs and dancefloors. One of the label's main contributors, Autarkic, heralds a new dawn for Disco Halal with his debut album, Can You Pass The Knife?, signalling a switch to original music. The brainchild of Tel Aviv artist Nadav Spiegel, we first got a taste of Autarkic's potential for original material with a 12" for Phil South's Golf Channel last year and this album superbly picks up where that single left off. Autarkic lifts the cold wave template into the modern age with Can You Pass The Knife?, crafting six songs rife with the sort of emotive intensity that work perfectly on the dancefloor in the trademark Disco Halal fashion.

Review: This new record from Automatic Tasty finds him move away from his usual pastoral acid sound and into a more DIY, bedroom pop realm with him on the microphone. It's a melancholic work that draws obvious parallels to Hot Chip, but with an extra air of curiosity and naivety. There is a dreamy vibe to the opener then a gentle party feel to 'A Happy Town,' lovely laziness to the bendy synths of 'Wake Up Dead' and more urgent feel to 'These Days'. This is utterly charming music that could have been released 30 years ago, today, or 20 years hence and still sound fresh.

Review: A much needed repress for one of Minimal Wave's best and most impressive looking archival releases here. Originally issued four years ago, Synthesize pulled together some nine tracks from the archives of Autumn, aka Belgian duo Peter Bonne and Geert Coppens whose musical experiments together began in the 1970s and took full flight the next decade. This collection's inspiration comes from the 1981 &" of the same name that Autumn laid to tape in under seven hours, with both tracks featured and complemented by a further array of primitive electronics and supple synth experiments. It's worth it alone for the nervous energy of "Night In June" and "Laughter Of A Madman".
