Review: Julian House has been an integral member of Jim Jupp's Ghost Box since the imprint's inception back in the early 00s and in fact, it would be fair to say that the man's studio efforts have helped to shape the label into the beast that it is today. Famously known as being the designer for artists like Primal Scream, House's The Focus Group project is what he should be remembered for first and foremost; not only does Stop Motion Happening offer 25 tunes in all, but what is truly special about this LP is its sheer diversity and pure experimentation throughout. We're not talking about regurgitating some outsider business here, on the contrary, this man's music is one of the only things sitting on our charts that sounds truly singular in every way. From the choice of instruments to way they've been moulded, House has a knack for the bizarre and the utterly human. It's a depiction of people, places and things; beautiful, frightening and revealing all at the same time.

Review: British duo Hintermass serve up their debut album The Apple Tree. It comprises Jon Brooks and Tim Felton; who was formerly of legendary British group Broadcast. The two multi instrumentalists take us on an exotic and cosmic journey (Ash-ra and Popul Vuh said to have been influences) influenced by traditional and psychedelic folk strains, as well. We particularly enjoyed the hazy and esoteric vibes of "The Rituals Of Reversal", the retro-pop of "Patterns Somewhere" reminiscent musically of Simon & Garfunkel and featuring Felton's velvety vocals and of course the bittersweet cosmic trip towards the end "Weicher". A thoroughly enjoyable album!

Review: Back in 1999, Birmingham duo Plone released what we still believe is one of the most overlooked albums on Warp, the cheery Jean-Jacques Perrey-goes-IDM brilliance of "For Beginner Piano". For some reason they've released very little of note since, making this new album a must-listen for fans of warm, sun-kissed electronica, early evening downtempo grooves and cheery 1970s children's TV soundtracks. It's every bit as colourful and melodious as their Warp-era work of the late 1990s, which isn't that much of a surprise since it apparently contains tracks recorded at different points between 2000 and 2019. What's most impressive about it - aside from the quality of the Brummie duo's compositions - is just how joyous it is. One listen and you'll be hooked.

Review: On his third full-length outing for Ghost Box, Pye Corner Audio man Martin Jenkins offers up a sequel of sorts to 2016's "Stasis". While that featured music inspired by suspended animation, sleep and "cosmic exploration", "Hollow Earth" sees the admired experimentalist heading underground for a spot of "subterranean exploration" and "submerged psychology". Interestingly, while there are plenty of dark and immersive cuts throughout the album - see the John Carpenter style chug of "Descent", the quiet solitude of "Prismatic Gateway" and the clandestine throb of "Dancing Shadows" - it's nowhere near as pitch-black as you'd possibly expect. Instead, he plays around with melancholic melodies and quietly beautiful electronics, a blueprint that results in such poignant and picturesque cuts as "Deeper Dreaming", the bubbly "Mindshaft" and glassy-eyed "Surfacing".

Review: With his trailblazing Black Mill Tapes series now a distant memory, Pye Corner Audio man Martin Jenkins seems to have made a conscious effort to slow down. Stasis is his first album for a year, and feels far more considered than some of his previous work. Some may bemoan the lack of experimental spontaneity, but the album contains some of Jenkins' best work to date. Check, for example, the sharp, ghostly chords, starburst melodies and metronomic synthesizer arpeggios of "Autonomization", the vintage '90s ambient electronica of "Ganzfeld Effect", and the dreamy, heartfelt bliss of the similarly minded "Ways Regained"; all are amongst Jenkins' most emotive tracks to date, and simply bristle with brilliant ideas.

Review: Ghost Box take us back to 2012 with this timely reissue. The narrative eruption that exploded after his Black Mill Tapes series, Sleep Games took us even deeper into a sprawling synthetic web of places both familiar and unfamiliar. From the spell-binding chimes and palpitating sensations of "Into The Maze" to the planet-leaping cascades of "Palais Spectres" via the Carpenteresque menacing slo-mo march of "A Door In The Dry Ice", Martin Jenkins leaves no corner of the map unexplored. With original copies beginning to fetch heavy numbers, this revisitation will come as good news to many. Don't sleep.
