Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Review: Voice Notes is a new imprint run by London underground veteran Toby Tobias with Alphonse. A five track various artist EP, Voice Notes 002 is a time-honoured memorial for its sister label London Housing Trust, that they shut down a few years ago after 10 releases. Featuring tracks by label boss Tobias who delivers some emotive electro on 'Streets Of Gold', his evil twin Alphonse on the UK flava of 'Rujac', plus introducing Dance with the dub techno deconstruction of 'Amber', Rodney Bennett with the classic Stateside deep house of 'Palm Sunday' and Pyramids of Space with the downbeat IDM journey 'Quantis'.

San
Review: Omakase keeps up the momentum of its fine first release with a second sizzling followup, this time from Trauma alongside Anton under their collaborative guise Antraum. It's a case of super silky sounds only here with deft and dubbed out tech on the opener 'Hachi', which is defined by a superb vocal hook. 'Roko' is a jittery rhythm with breakbeat and icy cold hits all warmed through by a fine bassline. 'San' shuts down with a nice laid back tech beat that encourages you to sink deep into it.

Review: It was a year ago that the much anticipated Aquasky "Teamplayers" album was released and here is the final installment of remixed, revamped and rejigged tunes, released on the Passenger label.. 'Bring It On Down' features Aquasky loosening up the bassline of the original, slapping in a nasty new vocal and giving it a heavy electro funk work out. Unlimited Apex (5:42)

Silence After The Storm (6:06)
Review: The Fourier label is back with more minimal dance floor magic, and the second release is a collaborative affair packed with talent. It's Aztec, Dark Male, Rob Bellfield and The Vast Profound who all come through here and start off with 'Sweet Music', a nice balmy and dubby cut for zoned out listening .'Unlimited Apex' pairs pensive basslines with smeared and expansive pads, then 'Standard Model' has a more warped and mind-melting cosmic take on warm, deep rolling tech. 'Silence After The Storm' is the gorgeously serene closer. Classy stuff for sure.

Review: Mr Shine sees B. Smiley (aka Todd Christenson) crank up the decibels for this catchy full-frontal breaks scorcher featuring rave stylee 303 acid driving the tight percussive layers. On the flipside, "Pigs 4 Dinna" produced by SIMO pushes the limits with some old school guitar riff samples taken to a new realm. "Pigs 4 Dinna" is a trippy excursion into sonic fiction.

The Time Has Come (2:59)
Review: For the first volume in their brand new Toxic Funk 45s series, the Breakbeat Paradise crew has turned to two stalwarts of the breaks scene, Easy Now Recordings co-founder Tom Showtime and long-serving DJ/producer Badboe. They hit the ground running with A-side "We Funk Tings", a cut-and-paste workout that peppers a head-nodding, bass-heavy hip-hop groove with funk licks, hazy horns and sneaky vocal samples from a variety of ragga and rap records. They continue in a similar vein over on side B, where the horn and piano-heavy hip-hop-funk of "We Have It Hot" is followed by the boom-bap booty business of "The Time Has Come".

The Blapps Posse - "Do What U Want To Do"
The Dynamic Guv'Nors - "These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"
Review: Well ahead of their time, The Blapps Posse cut some of the most agenda-setting records during the late 80s and early 90s. Gnawing and slapping their way through hip-hop, funk, hardcore and acid house, they made the records that soundtracked those early halcyon summers of love. This selection of cuts gathers the crews various guises and off-shoots and comprises the broadest of their abilities; from innocent formative hip-house ("Don't Hold Back"), sample-smashing seminal big beat ("Religious B-Boy") and bleep-style rave hopscotch ("These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"). Unearthed by Fat Hop champ Jerome Hill and remastered to stand up to today, this is a bona fide document.

Vibe-winding 170 swingers, both versions "5 O'Clock" leap with early-day jump up mischief and happy-slap riddims. "XXX Funk" sings a similar tune but with a little more punk to the live bass element. Review: Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger founded Terra Magica in 2021 as a platform for their brand of psychedelically-charged house and techno, and they've quickly built up a strong identity and a burgeoning community of likeminded astral travellers. Look no further than this quality split release for all the proof you need, as Lucas Croon threads Balearic, prog and trance together before the label bosses (Hektisch Sprengen DJs) weave some mystical mantras of their own and Dea revels in boxy Chicago jack crossed with Island boogie. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, with another three joints taking in uptempo proto-trance and anthemic emo-acid-breaks aplenty. Draw for the big feelings and get freaky in the process - what's not to love?

Review: Volume 8 in the Hardcore Projektz series brings together three top tunes from Darkus, The Phantom and Sike. "Hardcore Repossession" is a first class example of a dark side hardcore breaks production, with masses of bass, hard and powerful break-beats and vocal samples coming in to great effect - so far one of the best to come from Darkus! "Ragga Muffins" is another tune which has received a lot of support from the breaks scene, owing to its dark and twisted basslines backed with modern production. Sike's track takes the listener on a journey, using a 4/4 beat.

Fittingly titled Freaky Friends 2, it features DJ Swagger with some off-kilter UK bass on 'Hotice Water' and Low Tape with the NSFW booty bass of 'So Delicious' on the A side, followed over on the flip by Ole Mic Odd's sci-fi electro funk jam 'In The House' and Berlin's Nasty King Krule doing his best Dopplereffekt impression on 'Stop Talkin Boy' among others.

Supa (Deep In BKLYN edit) (4:05)
Review: Masters At Work's discerning left brain Kenny Dope left but one of many crinkle-cut marks on the sliced hot potato of dance musical oral history with 'Supa'. Born in Brooklyn, Kenny emerged from the underground hip-hop scene before lending a crate-digger's mentation to his work, obsessively chopping samples by way of tri-wielded MPC60, MPC3000 and E-mu SP-1200 machines. We're not sure which went into the making of 'Supa' and its two comprising versions, but this is a serious funk-jungle precursor, medleying ATCQ-Lou Reed instrumentals contra the acapella line from Super Cat's 'Nuff Man A Dead' (1991). Drop either of these tunas into an otherwise +160BPM set for a breezy, halftime surprise, one that nonetheless maintains the rolling energy.

Review: Ninja Tune aren't the only wax shuriken-touting dance gesticulators on the block. Lumbago Records are their reissuing rivals; hailing from France, this anonymous pair focus on rereleasing long-lost dance cuts from the crates, new and old, compiling them into short EPs. Scratchy electro and breaks bits from EFX and Samix time travel all the way from 1991 ('Technique Amiga' sounds like it's lifted straight from an early Lara Croft soundtrack), and are reconciled with two tracks made in the last 5 years - and one bang in between from 2001, The Ruffneck's 'Phase Shift'. An impressive exercise in cross-generation reconciliation. Electro will never die!

Review: Following a sure shot from Yosh earlier this year, Constant Sound offshoot Vivid returns with a deadly two tracker that plunges into the underworld of breakbeat science and soundsystem dynamics. Etch is without question one of the most inventive break-wielders in operation right now, and he pivots ably from monolithic drumfunk dubstep pressure to nimble jungle across his two astounding A side tracks. Tom Jarmey brings a more electro tinted angle to his offerings, sweeping from the atmospheric, melancholic roller "Burn" to the subtly snarling "Spectrum", offering something smoother in contrast to Etch's rugged cut ups.

Forty Wings Dynamo's 'Inversion' has a dubby, dreamy progressive house feel, its epic outlook and echoing percussion inevitably bringing Leftfield's first handful of 12"s to mind, before 'Raveolution' (Acid mix) brings a more jungle techno feel with sliced up breaks skittering around the four-to-the-floor kicks. Pedro Bertho's 'TOITOI' starts side two, nodding to Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams' with its soulful keys creating magic over a simple, banging techno framework before COEO's 'Vertigo' gets to work with its proto-breakbeat beats and one utterly orgasmic breakdown. JFB & Dancefloor Outlaws, meanwhile, flip the switch with a tongue-in-cheek D&B reboot of Desmond Decker that's ideal for lighting up the moodier 170 floors. Review: A couple of years back, the revitalised Hooj Choons label released an album of orchestra-sporting covers of classic dance cuts of the 1990s under the HEO: Hooj Ensemble Orchestra tag, then got rave revivalists Borai and Denham Audio to remix their new version of trance classic 'Cafe Del Mar'. Here those mixes - a frankly filthy, bass-propelled 'Rave Booty' mix and a more acid-flecked, grandiose breakdown-sporting 'Pluck Dub' - finally make it onto wax, alongside the Club Glow duo's similarly previously digital-only reworks of Transformer 2's early 90s 'Hooj' classic 'Fruit of Love'. More tactile and loved up, with tactile bass, pleasing pianos and glassy-eyed vocal snippets, the pair's 'Redux' mix is simply sublime, while Borai's solo dub is a deliciously dreamy, rush-inducing affair that sounds like a future rave classic.

The Funk Is
Review: 'Bass Phenomenon’ is a collaboration between Krafty Kuts and Tim Deluxe, and is also the first single taken from Krafty Kuts forthcoming album 'Freakshow'. Here two of dance music’s most respected producers turn out a house-breaks explosion which has had club land screaming with excitement! Released across two 12", the single also features top notch remixes from two opposites of the dance spektrum; a nice, tasty house mix from rising star and current scene fave Jesse Rose, and a seriously floor damaging drum & bass mix by DJ Friction. The video sees Krafty Kuts controlling dancers hard-wired into his DJ mixer and tweaking them out to the sounds in the track (girls are synths and boys are beats don’t you know!).Tim Deluxe has earned his stripes as a key figure in the world of house music since the success of his international hit 'Just Won't Do', but did you know he was also the man behind the bassline anthem ‘RIP Groove’? It seems Tim Deluxe has a keen ear for a dirty bassline and an undeniable knowledge of how to make a classic record. Krafty Kuts is one of the world's most sought after and respected DJ/Producers in breaks, having recently picked up the trophy for best DJ at the 2006 Breakspoll awards for the second year running, being voted best DJ in Australia and his BBC Radio 1 mini-mix for Annie Mac being voted 'Best Mix Of The Year'. Big support for 'Bass Phenomenon' has been coming from the Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors and Freeestylers to name a few.

The flip goes hard and dark with the industrial bass of "Konnor 3012", frenzied electro of "Pirate Utopias" and dystopian sound-scaping that is "AVP" .

To celebrate this joyous occasion, they have released a split white label especially for the tour featuring three tracks by the Monsters and 2 tracks by Nam Shub of Enki. This is a rollercoaster ride of electro so fat you'd think it would break your turntable and breaks so fresh, they're still moist with dew. Limited to only 500 copies!

Nail - "Pad On" (7:04)
Trixie, Connor Male, Thoma Bulwer - "Impromptune" (6:29)
Trixie - "Restless Sculptures" (6:01)
Review: Mental health charity label Serenity keeps it sophisticated with its sixth outing and once again donates all proceeds to charity this time Young Minds. It is underground house mainstay and DiY Discs legend Nail who steps up first with a much more breezy and balmy sound than you would expect but it sure is lush. 'Pad On' slips into his more usual and driving house sound but with swirling pads up top for summery refinement. Trixie, Connor Male & Thoma Bulwer then get deep and late night with their punchy 'Impromptune' while Trixie's solo cut 'restless sculptures' is a jacked-up and percussive number that leans into techno.

Ron Obvious - "Tugging" (Bum Jump mix)
Ron Obvious - "Elixic 3"
Tristan Da Cunha - "Bass Penetration" (Tushy dub)
Freakenstein - "Thafonk"
Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

The New Beginning EP
Perfect Kombo - "Devil Forest" (feat Cote)
The Brainkiller/P Kombo/Viper X - "Lets Go"
Afgan Headspin - "Eleven Floor" (remix)
The Brainkiller/Wardian - "Ire Fuck"
Review: Oh yes, this is what it’s about. Tortured Breaks delivers an absolutely mind bending third release with four absolute corkers, on 'New Beginning EP'. ' Devil Forest' has been devastating dance floors with its catchy riffs, eerie sirens and disgustingly heavy breakbeats. 'Let's Go' makes use of an instantly recognisable 'Let’s Go' vocal with filthy hoovers and a real jump up vibe. Afghan Headspin are called in on the remix duties with a real snappy breakbeat and driving riffs. Finally Ire F**k brings the church organ and choir together as one to great effect before it slams into a monstrous drop which will leave you grimacing from ear to ear.

Just Bash Out (Dreadzone mix)
Review: A phat little roller from Tom Real & the Rogue Element that is aimed squarely at the peak hour. A huge breakdown nestles amongst storming lead lines, crazy FX, crisp drums and throbbing bass. On the flip the mighty Dreadzone turn in a quality reworking with heavy duty sub action.

Review: From those lovely people at west records, comes new label Brighton breaks, which really allows them the diversity they deserve. Rob Reng kicks proceedings off with a flamboyant cheeky number that should give you a very good idea of the labels associates, especially if you pay attention to the vocals! Funky, groovy, synthy, bashy, chique, everything you could ask for in one package, and a funky Maelstrom mix to top it off.

Something Special (Spirit Catcher remix)
Super Strong (Basement Freaks remix)
Review: Formerly on Sunday Best and now on Jalapeno, Max Sedgley drops a third single from his acclaimed Suddenly Everything long player. With Tasita D'Mour taking hold of the lead vocal slot with both hands, "Superstrong" is a mean, boogie-inspired monster with classic strings and a belting chorus all present and correct. Faze Action really lift it to new heights though, dropping a post-Italo mix that will delight Aeroplane fans with its stripped down drums and bass and dramatic live drum-fills. Jalapeno label mates Basement Freaks also do a great job by dropping a funky breaks mix that reinvents the tune into a fun yet hard-working stomper.

Slaves Incorporated - "Baby" (7:58)
Tom Gillieron - "The Fire" (6:41)
Review: For Those That Knoe kick off a new series of DJ-oriented heaters dug out of forgotten corners of the dance music sprawl, and the first installment finds label head Ben Boe doing the digging. He's picked out two absolute gems you may well have not heard before - Paul Rayner's Slaves Incorporated track "Baby" and Tom Gillieron's "The Fire". The former is a rare slice of mid '90s UK garage which teeters between New Jersey bounce and London tuffness, while the latter is a wonderfully clattering slice of jazz-funk laced broken beat for soul cats and breaks-minded ravers alike to flex to.

Alfalfa - "Rising Down" (5:41)
Two Phase U - "You Are" (6:59)
Review: The correctly titled All Killer No Filler series from the Memphis/Monevideo label is back with a second instalment to back up the fine first outing. This effective various artists release kicks off with Elias Sternin's 'Loop Hole' which is a warm, fleshy techno kicker backed up by Stonem's more lithe and broken beat workout, 'Festichola', which brings some retro 90s synth sounds and plenty of colour. Alfalfa's 'Rising Down' is the flipside opener and is a turbocharged retro-future tech sound with cyborg energy. Last of all is a deeper, slower, heavier sound from Two Phase U with the pensive 'You Are'.

Review: In the year 2000, in a building called 'Wako Heights' in the back streets of the Japanese city of Kawasaki, Sueme (aka Phil Subhead ), began writing for his solo "Sueme-Dotcom" project. Now back in the UK, he has taken it further and teamed up with Total Usefull (Japan), the result of which is this smashed up 4-track EP with loads of bass, cuts and breaks. In the same vein as his "Banana love EP", but yet with a slightly different touch. Digital punk-funk at its best.

Les Bois (Samo remix) (6:10)
Les Bois (Tape Fear remix) (5:21)
Review: It's five up for London label Tessellate who hand over to T. Jacques for this slick mix of electro and golden era tech house. After recent EPs on J Steaw's House Puff and his own Nuances de Nuit, T.Jacques is in a fine run of form that continues here: "Les Bois" is hurried and squelchy cosmic funk while "Katsu" is built in crisp broken beats with sci-fi effects and thumping kicks making it both physical yet thoughtful. "Les Bois" becomes even more spaced out and astral with Samo's remix, while Tape Fear strips it down and rebuilds it as a swaggering bit of UK bass.

Vitess - "133cc" (6:20)
Review: Nuances De Nuit Vol 3 is another club ready but stylish EP of all fused house, minimal and techno sounds. Kolter immediately makes you move with 'Don't Kill My Groove', a perfectly fluid and slippery rhythm with warm chord smears and crisp perc. T Jacques then ups the ante with an old school tinged and punchy tech cut, 'Control,' that is awash with sci-fi pads. The Metropolitan Acid mix of 'Here For The Love' is a full flavour jam with diving bass and euphoric keys up top. Vitess closes down with '133cc', a bustling track full of rave energy, knotted synths and big stabs that ride on dusty breaks.

Beni - "Kung-Fu Beats"
Review: "Beat Me" is full of dirty, fat beats with nasty vocoder-samples. "Party" should be taken literally. The massive sub-bass and the vocoder-rap won't give your feet a break. "Fast Forward And Return" doesn't make any compromises with it's pitched-down samples and dark sounds, but remains highly danceable and mixable. "Kung-Fu Beats" is a rolling, sometimes bubbling locomotive, which has plenty of appeal for fans of trashy Asian martial-arts movies.

Review: After some wicked EPs by Yosh, Etch and Tom Jarmey, here is some proper underground UK flavour courtesy of Burnski's Vivid imprint - a new sub label of Constant Sound. The latest one this week is by the enigmatic Tamoshi. On the A side, we have the snarling minimalist roller called 'The System' which is quite reminiscent of early DJ Krust. Over on the flip, hear a convincingly old school junglist stepper, the fittingly titled 'Darkside' that goes all the way back to '95. One for the heads.
