Review: Gospel, FM funk and house collide on the latest offering by The Whole Truth aka. Tom Giles. Following up last year's 'E Da Boss' on Star Creature, 'Believe' is an impassioned plea to the would-be testifier, enjoining them to give over and into their inherent faith, which, if only it weren't for their psychic occlusion of a certain inner harmony, is bound to be fleshed out soon; aside from this sampled command on the vox, the track is effortlessly glitzy and modally shifts between bass harmonies. The inverse club mix is far sparser and dubbier at first, though slowly reveals its inner truth by way of a more stripped-back, mod-wheeled and trigger-padded experimentation.

Review: The Roulade label is doing things right - not only is the music they are serving up superb, but so to do this second 12" comes with great and original artwork. Its neon glow and diffuse light capture the vibes of the synths on the opening cut 'C'est Party' perfectly. It's a melodically rich tech house cut with rubbery bass and great spoken words from a world disco dancing competition. Occibel's 'Give 'Em Some Rest' is busy and dense with whirring sci-fi synths, funky Prince riffs, thudding house beats and plenty of colour. Add in two more equally vibrant and characterful cuts from Hearthug and Wooka on the flip and you have one of the most unique EPs we've heard in some time.

Review: Toolroom is now one of those house labels that sits at the top table wit the likes of Nervous and Spinnin. It has turned out big room sounds for many years and made label founder Mark Knight a star in the process. Here he has put together an eighth volume of the sampler series that showcases what the imprint is all about and his own track with Green Velvet and Rene Amesz is a highlight with its dark, sleazy grind and tech house funk sure to lock in the club. Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Review: Although best known for promoting new and fast-rising artists, Shall Not Fade has also become a regular home for deep house royalty, not least Rick Wade. Golden Era marks the Detroiter's fifth EP for the Bristol-based imprint, and as usual is full-to-bursting with class-sounding deep house hits. The title track can be found stretched across the A-side, with Wade smothering a deep, squelchy synth bassline and pleasingly swinging deep house drums in gorgeous chords, sun-soaked trumpet sounds, heady synth-strings and languid keyboard solos. Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. It is a wonderfully sweet modern and crossover soul sound that is actually a cover version of the popular Lil Major Williams original of the same name. Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. Review: Tech house titan from Leeds wAFF has nothing to prove to anyone when it comes to party starting, riot inducing club smashers. Despite that, here he is launching a new label called Nature and delivering some of the fiercest tackle he's ever presented to the world, with lead track 'Colours' in particular turning heads with its canny blend of rampant arpeggios, catchy vocals and a beat to die for. It's a slickly produced workout which will infect the limbs of everyone in a five mile radius, no doubt. 'Django' is moodier, but no less thumping in the important places. 'Switchin' keeps the pressure up while sliding into a more streamlined house framework.

Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Lee Gomez aka Wipe The Needle has produced these beats, which are all new, but the vocals will be recognised to hip hop heads. Review: There is a ton of sonic scuzz and frosty electronic texture to both cuts on this new limited 12" from Natural Sciences. And that is frankly to be expected when you are dealing with these two artists - the long-time LIEs associate Beau Wanzer goes first with the fucked up drums and gnarly synths, wiry electronics and dark vocal mutterings of 'The Table Scrap'. On the flip is Chicago noise specialist Hieroglyphic Being with 'This Is The Right Time In Human History 2 Be Stupid.' It's a lo-fi and fuzzy world of busted drum loops and anxious synths.

The Jones Girls provide the soulful vocal which is looped over a leggy disco-house beat and low-slung bass. Review: Dark Entries are masters of reissuing the tunes that are out of the financial reach of many of us. This timeless and utterly singular slice of Italo disco magic was bootlegged originally back in around 2015 and then the label decided to reissue it properly in 2016, with a remastered set of tunes for maximum playback effect. They now issue a special 40th-anniversary version. The 1982 bombshell, originally out on Discomagic Records, goes by the name of 'The Man From Colours' and it is a special track indeed, one that's full of romantic charm, mystery and plenty of proto-house vibes. Its vocals will be embedded in your mind forever upon first listen, and you get an instrumental cut on the flip, too.

Review: Last year, Whirlpool Productions' most renowned moment, throbbing 1996 jam 'From Disco To Disco', reappeared on 12". Here the track, which was produced and released by the trio of Justus Kohncke, hans Nieswandt and Eric D Clark (who provided the song's distinctive vocals) in 1996, transfers to 7" single for the very first time. It remains a fine chunk of disco-not-disco, with warming electric piano motifs and Clark's idiosyncratic vocals rising above a deep, throbbing, Italo-inspired bassline and crunchy house drums. This 45 edition also boasts what appears to be a previously unreleased instrumental edit, which does a fantastic job of building and releasing energy while giving the sometimes-wild Rhodes licks a chance to shine. A stone-cold classic!

Review: Hilltown Disco have been nurturing their own micro scene up in Dundee, bringing a punchy, gnarly strain of electro to the Scottish city and creating a strong community around it. It found him exploring what it means today to be a Black man in the U.S and features plenty of top guests such as Posdnuos (of De La Soul), Big Daddy Kane, and Guilty Simpson. This is one of the best tunes from the album so it gets its own pressing and new remix. 'Manifestin' (feat Angelo Arce) has hard bars and rugged, prickly hip hop beats. Review: Mary Wells was one of the many jewels in the crown of Motown at the peak of its powers back in the 60s. 'My Guy' is one of her biggest-ever hits from 1964 and was written by Smokey Robinson of The Miracles. Lyrically it addresses a woman's rejection of another man's advances in favour of remaining loyal to her boyfriend. The tune reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart but was Well's last for the label aside from a few duets with Marvin Gaye. It remains a classic to this day.

His take on his hometown's house sound pairs gorgeous synths with steely drum work and new one 'Motor City Madness' backs that up. It's got the nice raw drums, the elastic bass and is smothered with synth goodness while incidental sax and trumpet pads bring the romance. A People Mover remix goes heavy on the jazz vibes with a broken beat workout, Underground Resistance take it deep and SHE Spells Doom jacks up those drums into something close to a UK funky take on Detroit house.

Review: New Orleans funk outfit The Wild Magnolias were active in the mid 70s, releasing two albums and then regrouping in the 90s. Their sound is in step with their more renowned Louisiana peers, but certainly running hotter than the likes of The Meters. "Handa Wanda" is a stirring, effervescent call and response epic that shows the band at their best, rocking a wall of sound approach that keeps the pressure up the whole way through. "(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul" is a more fluid track, but it's certainly no slouch in the energy department either. This is hi-octane funk to get people shaking and sweaty.

Review: On the latest missive from his energy packed Power House imprint, Rene Pawlowitz - he of Shed and Head High fame - has chosen to showcase tracks from two of his lesser-celebrated alter egos, WK7 and Zigg Gonsalezz. As befits the peak-time ready, party-starting nature of the label, A-side 'Wait' offers an addictive blend of bustling, beefed-up house drums, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and sleazy, rave-igniting riffs. Review: Japan seems to excel at everything and anything it does, including reissuing golden jazz funk. This time out, Hysear Don Walker's "Complete Expressions Vol. 2" is mined for the two escapist and mellifluous tracks that make up this essential 7". Ryuhei The Man edits "Children Of The Night" into a smooth flowing bit of late night and romantic jazz funk. It rides on a pensive bass loop and has a subtle sense of drive, while the slower original is that bit more sentimental with its noodling chords and more meandering mood. Both sides are pure winners.

Review: Studio One have put out plenty of big tunes and this is the latest to get a big reissue on a super loud-cut 12" single for extra devastating impact. It's a well-known classic every self-respecting reggae fan should know and blows up any party, especially when tweaked like these two versions. They were originally produced by Studio One bossman Coxsone Dodd and have been covered by The Clash as well as sampled by The Fugees and hip hop MC KRS One. The snaking lead synth, the rumbling drums and classic ska trumpet are all straight up irresistible.

Review: Laury Webb is a lesser-known reggae artist active since the 1970s, and 'Woman My Queen' is one of his few releases; a heartfelt piece that features a smooth and soulful production by Philip Sloley, as well as a wompy, clipping kick sound and a haunting confession of love. This reissue is of one of two of Webb's to come out on the original label Reality Records; two further cuts which didn't feature on the original 12" appear here, from the triumphant 'It Seems The Same' to its uplifter-dub version.

Review: Jayson Wynters is one of the UK's more underrated producers. He hails from Birmingham, has mastered Kung Fu and is no slouch in the studio. This outing on Spanish label Pulp - written back during the lockdowns - is one of his best yet - a deep look into the cosmos, with star-gazing synth lines and analogue drum sounds that are frayed around the edges. Misty-eyed chords define many tracks, with the loosely jumbled drums and rasping basslines all interlocking perfectly. 'Corns Funk' has twanging bass riffs that remind of Prince, while 'Night Drive' is a Dam-Funk style late-night street cruise during sunset.

Review: While he might have come to attention exploring Fourth World percussion with Wolf Muller, Niklas Want has since proven himself to be equally happy indulging in full-tilt rave action, and that's exactly what he's up to on this fresh and fruity 12" for Warning. 'Die Glocke' is a rowdy, acid-tweaking breakbeat monster with some playful, braindance chords on top. Fantastic Twins then team up for a sweatier, techno-tooled remix of the track pitched squarely at strobe lit basements. 'Bodyzeit' finds Wandt indulging chunky piano stabs, Detroit synth orchestration and electro swagger, all adding up to a seriously fun kind of club wrecker, which Borusiade then simmers down to a smouldering, after hours roller for the smoke machine crew.

Review: There's an abundance of crafty, ear-snagging gear coming out on Telomere Plastic these days and the steady stream of VA releases are a handy window into some of the freshest operators in the more creative ends of minimal tech house. Baenglund is having a jolly time of it tweaking out the freaky synth riffs on 'Funk Inspector', while Aspetuck creates a teasing, strung-out after hours sound which tips towards electronica on 'As The Fog Rolls In'. Review: Better-known in the Motor City as DJ Gusto, August Williams makes his bow on Detroit's original techno imprint, Juan Atkins' much-loved Metroplex. He first offers up 'The Hook Up', a relaxed electro workout marked out by hip-hop tempo beats, sparkling synthesiser arpeggio lines and gorgeous electronic melodies, before opting for a more hypnotic, dark, clandestine and minimalistic techno sound on superb machine jam 'Dark T'. Review: who? continues to build on the mythology of the character Paula with this latest EP on their label. Channelling electro anonymity into a concept while still maintaining the focus on punchy dancefloor production, this playful project is backed up by some serious tunes. 'Outside In The Dark' is a creepy, horror soundtrack workout driven by classic drum machine pressure and the eeriest of synths. 'All Night' has a snappier, wound-up flavour while 'Sublime Grooves' takes a diversion into subtler, more intricate layers of sequencing and modulation. '6:38AM' finishes the record off on a lower tempo cut given xtra dramatic poignancy by the interplay between raw piano and looming pad harmonies.

Review: Released earlier this August, Brighton-born jazz musician and producer Chip Wickham's four-track EP 'Love & Life' is a multi-instrumental easy-listening record that has a subtle depth to its sloozy production. The opening track 'Space Walk' sets the bar right out of the gate with an incredible flute-driven story, backed by some gentle, brassy drums and jazz lounge piano. There's a distinct lo-fi quality to it in its vibe, but the sound of the xylophone is just so crisp against the tenor sax - it's like you're right there in the studio with Wickham.
