  1. World Gruuv (7:14)
  2. Profesora (9:15)
Review: Having previously blessed us with "Ocean Side" two years back, Benedek and Tom Noble return to Superior Elevation with two more Balearic gems. One for the night time, one for sunrise; "World Gruuv" hits the boogie spot with spiralling keys wandering freely up and down a tight shimmering synth-bass led groove. Meanwhile "Profesora" on the B brings us back into reality softly with its addictive percussive hook, aquatic backing and totally tropical taste. Imagine Art Of Noise on Claremont 56 and you're on the right route.

Review: Having served for eight years as one of the most dependable outlets for deep, thought provoking house in the UK, Boe Recordings recently announced its plans to shut up shop, and it does so in style. Calling on regular artists as well as fresh talent, it's a perfect swansong that demonstrates just how much quality is to be found in the Boe back catalogue. Leif's "That Ice Cream Tune" is a hypnagogic slice of broken beat, while label boss Ben Boe gets into a dreamy 2-step state of mind. That's just the tip of the iceberg on this flawless double-pack from a label that will be sorely missed.

  3. Norval Headley & John Wayne - "Good Good Lover" (3:40)

Review: Firehouse was dub don King Tubby's label right up to his death. Since he was shot and killed in a robbery attempt in 1989, the label has been run by Jamaica's Sonic Sounds. Their latest outing finds them reissue Lilly Melody's tasty two tracker "Jumbo" from 1987. The lead cut is a deep rolling joint with rich patois and rump-wriggling bass. Flip over for Norval Headley & John Wayne's "Good Good Lover" which features plenty of freaky filter use and knob twiddling that skews and twists synths into all sorts of mad shapes while natty chords and zealous bass kills keep you on your toes. Fresh indeed.

Transdance: GC1 Version (repress) (limited numbered 10" in screen printed sleeve + insert)
Cat: DOM 05M. Rel: 14 Nov 16
Coldwave/Synth
  1. Transdance (GC1 version) (5:21)
  2. Life Up (demo) (6:03)
Review: The mythical Transdance from UK duo Night Moves is given a much needed official repress by Domestica Records and the Barcelona label have spared no expense. A limited pressing of 400 10"s come housed in hand screen printed sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. Despite the paucity of Night Moves discography, it's clear the duo of Michael Guihen and John Davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. Transdance was originally released as a limited 12" white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of Europe and New York City yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. Original copies of the GC1 pressing of Transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on Discogs so kudos to Domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut "Life Up" on the flip.

Review: There should be more than a few techno fans getting rather excited right now. You see, Donato Dozzy and Nuel's Aquaplano Sessions is something of a "holy grail" for tribal-influenced minimal techno collectors. Originally released over two 12" singles on the short-lived Aquaplano label in 2008 and 2009, the material has long been held in high regard - so much so, in fact, that copies of the original vinyl pressings are extremely hard to find. This reissue from Spectrum Spools is great news for anyone who missed out first time round. While there are some immaculate deeper moments (see the becalmed dreaminess of "Aqua 8"), it's the robust, aggressive, bass-heavy and occasionally intense tracks that really stand out.

Review: There's a truly undefinable yet wholly recognizable mood to the music of Washington DC native Marissa Nadler, and in places it's hard to not feel the ghost of Roy Orbison's vibrato coming through the vocals sung here. There's some beautiful duets and overdubbing to be heard from Angel Olsen on an album that Nadler co-produced with song-writer Lawrence Rothman and Justin Raisen, the latter known for his production work with the likes of Santigold, Yves Tumor and Kim Gordon to name a few. It's nigh on impossible to not be cast away by wistful forlornness of the LP and its titles alone express the deepest of melancholy blue in Nadler's music, with none more effectively haunting than the album's title track: "For My Crimes". Be brave.

Review: Dark Entries are clearly fans of British duo Nagamatzu, with this remastered and reissued edition of their LP, Above This Noise, the third time the San Francisco label has profiled the '80s synth act. Formed of Andrew Lagowski and Stephen Jarvis, Nagamatzu were active for just under a decade in the fertile period of UK music history where synth technology was met with experimental minds. Above This Noise sees Dark Entries hone in on the 5-year period between Nagamatzu's second album, 1986's Sacred Islands Of The Mad, and their third and final effort, 1991's Igniting The Corpse, and features a mix of unreleased material and tracks culled from various tape-only compilations. There is a primal, raw energy running throughout the nine tracks as brutish drum machine hits joust for attention with epic synth lines and the occasional post-apocalyptic lyric. Great stuff!

Review: A warm welcome back to Gaussian Curve member and Melody as Truth founder Jonny Nash, whose last solo album of gentle, guitar-laden ambient explorations appeared back in 2017. Interestingly, "Make A Wilderness" is something of a departure from his trademark sound. While still gentle, ambient and evocative, it relies far more heavily on poignant piano work, heart-aching female vocalizations, field recording style aural textures, distant cello parts and ghostly electronics. There's much beauty to be found, but it's a far creepier and in some ways melancholic set than we've come to expect. This is no great criticism, though, because "Make A Wilderness" is superb from start to finish.

Review: Given the increasing number of shared releases by Jonny Nash and Suzanne Kraft, it was probably inevitable that the pair would eventually join forces in the studio. Predictably, this first collaborative album for Nash's Melody as Truth label is a woozy, intricate and evocative ambient treat. Largely built around plucked notes of Nash's guitar, blissful synthesizer lines and occasional heartfelt piano flourishes, it largely feels like a cross between 1970s ambient material and more contemporary beat-less electronica. In other words, it combines elements familiar from their separate solo project to present something that sums up both artists' approach to ambient composition.

Review: Over the years, Joey Negro has delivered compilations focusing on a wide range of styles and sub-genres, including soulful disco, Italo-house, early U.S disco-rap, and Washington D.C go-go. Now he's turned his attention to electro, the style that did more than any other to inspire Britain's first wave of DJs and dance music producers. This "personal collection" contains a mixture of stone-cold scene classics - Aleem's Leroy Burgess-fronted "Release Yourself", Hashim's scene anthem "Al Naayafiysh (The Soul)" and Dwayne Omar's P-funk influenced "This Party's Jam Packed" - alongside deeper selections such as Kosmic Light Force's brilliant - and hard to find - L.A electrofunk classic "Mysterious Waves", and The Russell Brothers thrillingly intergalactic "The Party Scene".

Put simply, they thought it would be a nice thing to do - and we concur. It's an official re-release here of Washington D.C. based outfit The Nelson Family's one and only LP from 1986. Comprised of Charisse, Charlene, Paul and their mother, this is a gospel record with super production that features top tracks including "Thank You, Lord" (a firm favorite of Floating Points and Skymark), "Filled With His Spirit" and "Everlasting Love". Charisse would later go on to create the Stellar Award winning/Grammy nominated choral ensemble named Vision, and is still active in the D.C. area as a gospel singer.

Review: Few do funky soul jazz sessions as well as The New Mastersounds, who first formed in Leeds in 1999 and have gone on to be regulars at the Jazz Cafe as well as New Orleans' annual Jazz Fest. Late last year in Denver, the band linked up with vocalist Lamar Williams Jr (son of the late Allman Brothers bassist Lamar Williams) to record this high class album of soulful horns, live drums and heartfelt vocals, all finished off with percussion by Thievery Corporation's Jeff Franca. Digging deep into the history of funk while also looking to a new paradigm, "Shake It" is an album of feel-good emotions that make a lasting impression.

This lesser known side of their output is explored on Be Music, which gathers together cuts from that period - mostly released on Factory Records - alongside more recent remixes for the likes of Tim Burgess and Factory Floor. There are plenty of stone cold classics present, including Marcel King's wide-eyed Hacienda classic "Reach for Love", Section 52's "Looking From A Hilltop (Megamix)", the bubbly, Freestyle influenced synth-pop of The Beat Club's "Security (Remix)" and the throbbing brilliance of "Bootsy (Swingfire Mix)" by A Certain Ratio.

Review: Introducing the dirty psychedelia rock of Seattle's Night Beats. At a glance you could be forgiven for mistaking them as a new formation of a swinging '60s inspired Arctic Monkeys. But, really, sometimes someone comes along that just does the old fashioned right, and after eight years of releasing a constant stream of music, Daniel Billingsley, the leading force behind Night Beats along with a host of other musicians who made the record possible can be held in a high regard. Let's say something in a spectrum somewhere between Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Tame Impala - Kasabian - and The Black Keys - contemporarily speaking of course.. With more mic techniques strewn across the album than a burgeoning sound student could bare to fathom, it's quality songwriting with subtle production graces to boot - and what more else can you say about a classic, rock, pysch, surf and funk album done well. Rock on man.

It's a fine mix, all told, with the Warp Records stalwart running through a range of soulful head-nodders (Children of Zeus, Ladi6, Creative Principle), and sun-kissed good-time grooves (Bosq, Massimo Vanoni), before gently upping the tempo via Dim Zach's Imagination-sampling nu-disco, the simmering jazz-funk of Chieftain, and the NYC proto-house style goodness of Soulphiction's SBM project. Naturally, you'll find a clutch of the Leeds-raised artist's own productions and reworks dotted throughout, including a wonderfully loved-up, string-laden house version of "Russia" by Fat Freddy's Drop.

Review: For anyone thinking that title might be a tad self-deprecating, it's worth noting that Noel Gallagher isn't one to rest on his laurels-there may be material here that'll satisfy the old-school Britpop fans in the house, such as the first single 'Lock All The Doors', yet elsewhere 'Chasing Yesterday' is notable not only for Gallagher's midas touch with indelible melodies but for experimentation that takes in such unlikely ingredients as saxophone-abetted jazz and funk even whilst maintaining his love for the classic pop and rock of the '60s and '70s. On this evidence, this tunesmith's well of inspiration isn't running dry any time soon.

Review: Three studio albums in, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have managed to distance themselves from their frontman's legacy enough to become a household name in their own right. 'Who Built The Moon' sees Gallagher continue to assert his famed song-writing prowess whilst pushing his band in new directions with bluesy-rock anthems, smoky and atmospheric interludes and the satisfying electronic pop of tracks like 'She Taught Me How To Fly'. It's this willingness to explore and experiment that makes this album his most ambitious to date, and the finest post-Oasis work that either of the Gallaghers have produced.

This latest reissue of the English band sees the label complete its retrospection of Normil Hawaiians following reissues of More Wealth Than Money and Return of The Ranters LPs. The band's music is the real deal when it comes to raw and emotional UK post punk and wave. This album in particular, which failed to take off in 1984 due to label and liquidation issues, sees its 2019 release arrive with a collectors edition of bonus tracks, including live cuts, album outtakes and unreleased B-sides. A 'o ia!

Review: Home marks the long overdue follow up to Nosaj Thing's excellent debut set Drift, released on Alpha Pup way back in 2009. Described as a very personal record by Chung in interviews, this sense of introspectiveness certainly comes across in a cohesive eleven track set. Fans will no doubt be happy to hear there is plenty of the heady instrumental beat work that Nosaj Thing made his name on with "Snap" and "Phase III" stand out tracks - it is however Chung's decision to work with vocalists that add another dimension to his sound. You should be familiar with "Eclipse/Blue", the lead single that featured Blonde Redhead's Kazu Makino and the Toro Y Moi featuring "Try" is equally sublime.

Review: Not Glass is the debut collaboration between Ecstatic's Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving) and Dimitris Papadatos aka Jay Glass Dubs. A result of years of daily Facebook chats between the London and Athens-based artists, the 'Forma' LP is described by the label itself as 'a theatrical soundtrack', and pays tribute to Latin and Greek authors Ovid and Heraclitus. Our picks from the bunch are the evocative, ambient scenes on "Fallite Fallentes" and "Lusicrum", the haunting polyrhythmic suspense of "Dum Loquor, Hora Fugit" and the cavernous beats on the minimalist "Ut Ameris, Amabilis Esto".

Review: For the uninitiated, The Waldorf Project is an ongoing series of "immersive art experiences" produced by artist Sean Rogg that tend towards the dark, intense and shocking. While each performance is different, one constant is the woozy, unsettling and occasionally surprisingly beautiful music produced and performed by Alessio Natalizia AKA Not Waving. In total, Natalizia recorded over 20 hours worth of music for the project between 2013 and 2018, with "Futuro" bringing together some of the Italian's favourite compositions. It's mostly ambient in tone, with Natalizia sashaying between slowly unfurling, Eno-esque compositions, gloopy modular soundscapes and fizzing, cyclical sets that recall Terry Riley's synthesizer-based works. Closing cut "Emotion 7.7 Communion", a heart-aching ambient epic tinged with immeasurable sadness, is particularly potent, though the standard remains very high throughout.

Review: Death metal, sludge to post-rock and synthwave specialists Relapse deliver a third album from the shoegazing Nothing. With artwork to challenge anything conjured up by Aphex Twin or Bjork, Nothing's sound was captured and produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock and it's an album that will send you spiralling back towards what the band call "stories of self-loathing, self-destruction, and a general disdain for humanity." Yep, the '90s; time to lose your job, fall out with your friends, get that eviction notice, and listen to this on a bean bag watching Reality Bites on mute. Let it rain.

Review: Gondwana Records is an Independent record label based in Manchester, UK. Founded by Matthew Halsall in 2008, the label has gone on to release music by Dwight Trible, John Ellis, Mammal Hands, Nat Birchall, Phil France and Portico Quartet. The label has won a legion of fans across the world and acclaim from the likes of tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, DJ Shadow, Mr Scruff and Bonobo. Now they present Noya Rao, a Leeds based electronic-soul quartet. Purveyors of lush, enigmatic dreamscapes and grooving electronica, they're led by producer Tom Henry with vocalist Olivia Bhattacharjee, bassist Jim Wiltshire and drummer Matt Davies. Said to be influenced by the Sub Dub nights at Leeds West Indian Centre, it joins the dots between soul, pop, jazz, R&B and electronica. For fans of enigmatic dreamscapes and organic/danceable electronica: look no further.

Review: On their debut album, 2016's the Tony Allen Experiments, Naples twosome Nu Guinea re-invented tracks by the legendary Afro-beat drummer as synth-heavy chunks of deep jazz-funk and nu-Balearica. For this follow-up - their first full length entirely made up of their own compositions - the duo serves up a set of jazz-funk, disco and boogie cuts rich in both their trademark colourful analogue synthesizer sounds and live instrumentation. It's a formula that guarantees a string of memorable highlights, from the sun-kissed peak-time brilliance of "Disco Sole" and rubbery, funk-fuelled "Je Vulesse" (a killer vocal number), to the wobbly downtempo trip of "A Voce E Napule" and Mizell Brothers fizz of closer "Parev Ajare", the album's most synthesizer-heavy cut.

Review: Italian duo Nu Guinea has previously proved adept at creating humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Here, they focus a little more on the latter with a concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen. With his blessing, and that of the Comet label on which he's been releasing since the 1980s, the Early Sounds Recordings pair has cut-up and re-constructed Allen's drums, combining them with their own steamy electronics, vintage synthesizer lines and classic drum machines. It's an intoxicating and hugely entertaining blend that sits somewhere between their previous outings, Danny Wolfers' material under the Nacho Patrol guise, and the dreamy late '80s/early '90s work of forgotten Italian producer Mr Marvin.

Review: Steven Stapleton has made countless albums as Nurse With Wound, though few are quite as celebrated as 1988's "Soliloquy For Lilith". As this latest reissue of the lauded set proves, the epic album has lost none of its original allure or lustre. This edition expands on the original version, which contained six lengthy untitled ambient and drone compositions of breathless brilliance, by including two further pieces recorded during the same sessions (tracks seven and eight). Like the other meandering soundscapes, they're dark, avant-garde, intoxicating and exceptionally immersive. In truth, the album is a must-have for all of those who enjoy the more cosmic and atmospheric end of the ambient spectrum.
