Review: The legendary Afro funk fusionists Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey have got unlimited amounts of big tunes in their back catalogue and the fiery 'It's A Vanity' is one of them. It has fat and chunky drums with trademark horns leading the way next to the impassioned vocals. The tune twists and turns on a vibe as it funks you up and then on the flip is the more lo-fi and stripped back, earthen funk sounds of 'Nougbo Vehou' (La Verite Blesse). Anotehr killer 7" reissue from this great collective.

Review: Acid Jazz Records' has got a licensing agreement with legendary Benin label Albarika Store that is seeing them put out some of the best music to have ever come from West Africa. Benin's almighty Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey made plenty of it. This latest 45 is another stunner with plenty of raw screams, wails and grunts all adding extra life and vitality to the already trilling guitars and bustling drum rhythms. Add in heavy percussion and you have a real heavy Afro psych-funk tune. The flip is more deep and soulful, and just as good for different reasons.

Review: Benin funk supergroup Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou have an essential discography that takes in some of the most definitive afro-funk sounds you can hear. The Acid Jazz label serves up a couple of such betters here with 'Kpede Do Gbe Houenou' layering up the driving grooves, killer horns and wild keys into something intoxicating. Less intense but just as good, 'Ma Wa Mon Nou Mi O' brings the guitar work to the fore, with plucked and funky riffs underneath the imploring vocal work that's up top. Both tunes have been restored and remastered.

Review: As if their recent album Beyond The Sun wasn't quite enough new material this year, Orgone return with two more brand new jams on this 7" for Colemine. "Strike" is a firing, sweaty Union cover that's focused on nothing but an unashamed party. Review: It's hard to fault the work of the Original Gravity crew and when the tasteful London label's All Stars assemble it's even more important to take note. It is they who kick off 2025 with a classic funky break that is topped with spoken word samples from an MC at a big fight event (though it's not Michael Buffer, the man behind these famous words, because he has a strict copyright on them). The beats are as fiery as a heavyweight showdown with plenty of punchy horn stabs. On the flip, 'Rumble In The Jungle' is a similar sound that makes just as much impact.

Review: If Original Gravity serves as one of the foremost outposts for heavy funk jams in the modern era, you know their All-Starts outfit are equipped with the tools to make a record really pop. All the ingredients are there on ‘Ain’t Nothing But A Groovy Party Baby’, as overdriven organ duels with a formidable brass section and rolling drums for a peak-time party pleaser cut from a classic cloth, with an early 70s soul sound to match. Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: There are not very many labels that are as successful and revered in electronic music as Mood Hut is, coming up with gem after gem after its inception in 2012. 'Water Seeds' by Oro Azul offers four tracks that range from sub-aquatic, mellow and relaxing to tribal percussiveness that really takes things to another level. A little more chilled out than their normal output, perhaps, but certainly not a massive departure, there are some serious island vibes here.

Review: Any long-time underground devotees will know that Romania is most often associated with ornate minimal and tech but there is a sublime deep house vibe to this inaugural outing from the Chameleon label. 'Royalties' is a delightfully dreamy cut with balmy pads swirling over rubbery, rolling kicks. 'Vishwar' is another elongated and drawn-out pleasure with undulating grooves and melodies intertwining in hypnotic fashion. The epic 12-minute plus 'Royalties' (Paul Walter remix) has an upright, militant feel to the marching drums. All three of these are classy outings.

Review: Minimal murkery wrapped up in untitled mystery, 'A/B' sees French experimentalist Orree lay down two beguiling pieces of stripped-back bass brutalism. 'A' hits like a twisted instrumental grime cut that's been through the washing machine too many times. Rippled, clean and totally out of shape. 'B' has also been through the same process but then also marinated in high levels of diesel for a sleazier, oily and intoxicating experience. Limited so don't sleep.

Review: Daniel Ortiz is a friend of the Blind Vision Dubs label and has really come correct here with its latest limited edition, strictly vinyl-only release. 'Back & Forth' kicks off with dancing sci-fi melodies over a punchy deep house beat that is fresh and future-minded. 'Different Perspective' is another intergalactic tech house trip with evocative lead synths and melancholic pads. 'Inverzhen' gets a little more jacked up and percussive but retains a special cosmic energy and 'We Could Have It' then lays down thudding kicks with eerie melodies to close out a very handy EP.

Review: Mr Bongo's crucial Brazil series hits a 94th volume here with vocal and instrumental group Os Carbonos from Sao Paulo. The band had a long and fruitful career that started in the 60s and ran on into the 80s. This offering is a tune from later on in their time and it is a prime slice of Brazilian boogie with funk drums, vamping chords and hip swinging claps all designed to bring the good ties and the sunny vibes. The bass-driven a-side is the one, but the flip from Sandra Sa is a special kind of sentimental soul sound.

Review: For the latest edition in the label's superb Brazil 45s series, the Mr Bongo crew has decided to reissue one of their all-time favourite tracks, Os Devaneios' 'Embala Differente'. Situated here on side B, the track is one of the funkiest and heaviest samba floor-fillers going - a 1978 workout that adds punchy horns, disco-boogie bass, strong male lead vocals and mazy organ solos to an infectious and percussively dense rhythm track. A-side 'A Beleza E Voce Menina', a slightly later recording, is equally as impressive, with the obscure Brazilian band adding elements of soul, South American boogie and AOR to their funky-as-hell samba template. Another essential instalment in one of the most on-point reissue series around.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series continues apace with this 95th entry, which carries two separate sides to keep any Latin-minded DJ very happy indeed. 'Mar Afunda' is a dancefloor delight from Os Novos Crioulos which originally came out on the group's self-titled album on Pirata in 1976. It's shuffling and sublime, sure to get a plethora of ID requests and shimmying moves from the people with their ears tuned in. On the flip we get Supersom TA's 'Brasileira Roxa', a sunny slice of samba fun which originally came out in 1972 and features more cuica flexing than you could ever dream of.

Review: Samba flavours do not come more authentic than this. The sixth in Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series, here they unearth two foundation pieces from Rio collective Os Origianais Do Samba. Forming in 60s Rio, they're still highly active today and have a discography peppered with Brazilian gold. This 45 does well to showcase their breadth... "La Vem Salgueiro" is quintessential samba. Heavy rhythm, punctuated vocals and a dynamic that leaps from bold and delicate in a flash, it charms you instantly. "Tenha Fe" has a softer soul as it strums and sways and more of a folky sensation, tight harmonies and alluring naked instrumentation.

Review: There's not a huge amount we can say with certainty about O$VMV$M. The act is based in Bristol, UK, and certainly reinforce preconceptions of the city as a hotbed for leftfield stuff. Whether that's politics, art, or, in this case, music. Or perhaps all three. Beach Road is as much an exercise in sound-as-art as it is music per se, and as such is a strong statement about the lack of vision and imagination stalking streaming services and record shops alike in 2023.
None of which is to say that O$VMV$M's six-track EP isn't packed with incredible music. 'Diablo', one of the wildest, strangest efforts here, is disjointed mutant pop-electronica that seems like someone is warming up for an MPC showcase, and exemplifies our point. It's pleasurable to hear, but fascinating to take apart. Similar points can be made about the sparse, glitchy percussion of 'Beach Road' and 'Follow', making this one for the deep dive enthusiasts.

Review: The new EP from Image Recordings makes up their third release since their start in 2023, marking out an impressively chill but still poised undertaking in surreal funky techno. Evidencing on their part a keen understanding of the meditative instillations sought by DJs at the early outset of the UK techno explosion. Every track is swung and prescient of the UK funky sound that would emerge later, though this record doesn't quite qualify as UK funky since the latter sound is marked by a soulful (often vocal) influence of jazzdance; rather the likes of 'Same Being' and 'Life In The Shade' are strange ones indeed, with a strangely nocturning, mechanic, speechless quality.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** This timeless classic by American singer-songwriter Shuggie Otis is an instantly recognisable masterpiece of soul. 1971's "Strawberry Letter 23" from his album "Freedom Flight" has endured and become a rare groove touchstone. Flecked with elements of psych and breakbeat, it is prescient, and stuffed with neat tics and tricks. Turn to the flip for an added bonus - "Ice Cold Daydream" is a funk bomb full of bouncing organs and squelching wah wah guitars with Shuggie's trademark vocal tones laid over the top.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Two luscious soul/folk/psychedelic funk crossover jams from American singer-songwriter Shuggie Otis are reissued and remastered 45 years after their first release for Record Store Day 2019. Equal parts groovy, dreamy, organically introspective and futuristic, "Inspiration Information" is the document of a young man who owns his inspired vision completely. We are particularly loving "Aht Uh Mi Hed" on the flip where filtered keyboard sounds blend with effortlessly graceful strings during the middle dream sequence of the track.

Review: Here comes something new on the ever-essential Perlon. There's no exact information about who is behind Ottlix, although some scant information online points to the names Felix HK and Ottber, whoever they might be. Either way, mystery is always a part of the Perlon vibe and so it goes on this superlative trip into micro house territory, with lead track 'Tamarindo' pivoting around a relaxed broken beat formation and elegant slithers of deep techno synthesis. The snaking rhythmic style keeps up on 'Time Issues', which comes on like a Stasis joint with its fluttering, psychedelic machine soul tones. 'For' has a more pointed shift towards the dancefloor with a steady house beat, but it's still plenty weird as a good Perlon record should be.

Review: Berlin based organ band Otto return with a flitty two-tracker in the Italo vein, 'Wir Kommen' and 'Elixier' being the two sonic cases in point. Topping up the label's Maximal Super Sound sub-discog, the tracks are equally as riveting as they are buzzing. The first is vocoder-laden, cold, brittle and icy, yet somehow warms in equal measure through its slightly rhythmically offset leads and pads. 'Elixier', meanwhile, lolls and ironicizes away into a kind of auditory mad-hatter's pleasure garden, getting far weirder with it via carefully delayed popcorn stabs and rainmaker-esque, cascading sounds in the breakdown.

Review: Tel Aviv's Elado has put out a fine run of eight releases in just two years on the likes of GAMM, Barefoot Beats and Bonfido Disques, but for his next move, he branches out with his own reissue label. its aim is to "focus on uncovering lost gems" with the original paired with his own remixes. The first one is a 1983 private press from the Canadian pair OUI. 'Circle Of Love' is a big disco banger with flashy synth work and rugged arps, with a pair of Elado's mixes making it even more dancefloor ready. 'You Make Me High' is a more sentimental 80s pop sound.The release has recieved support from a lot of artist, such as Gerd Jansen and Hunee. A fine start to life for this new label.

Review: The fourth chapter in Childhood Intelligence's alternate sub-division, Sunrise Inc, features five neo-braindance artifacts from Outer Order of the Planetary Instinct Alliance. These tracks feature mystic analogue rhythms and vintage sounds that blend haunted synth landscapes with Latin grooves and heavy SH101 low-end frequencies. Intimate and hypnotic melodies and voices create a homage to the past and a prophetic vision for the future and betray a producer with a great musical heritage. Review: There are plenty of question marks over the man who founded and still runs the R&S label, but the music it releases remains crucial. This time it is a reissue that gets us excited with Belgian artist Marcos Salon aka The Outlander's debut EP from 1991 in the spotlight. The visceral five track offering is all about high impact, floor facing techno with dramatic synth builds and driving drums. Often thought to be one of the most most intelligent rave release's R&S put out during this period, it still fits right in today with artists like Ben UFO never afraid to reach for the classics.

Review: It was only a matter of time before Andrew Ferguson made his debut on 2 Bad Mice's Over/Shadow; his tenure in the game, his authenticity, his lack of compromise and his timelessness as an artist (both as Outrage and his more 140-oriented alias Nomine) is a perfect fit. Here are two examples; 'Goodbye' says hello with oceanic waves of disarming pads, bellowing subs and spacious breaks while 'In The Dark' brings a little more 1990 unity vibes thanks to the sensual vocal and subtle piano charm. Review: Ovatow is but one outlet for Wilco Klen van Bennekom, the man running the Frustrated Funk family of labels from Rotterdam. It's not so often we get treated to a drop of fresh productions from someone normally releasing other people's music, so 10 years on from the last Ovatow outing, it's time to sit up and take notice of this new drop on Frustrated sub label Harbour City Sorrow. There's an echo chamber veneer hanging over this two-tracker which finds the worlds of electro and dub techno colliding with stunning results. If you value deep-diving electronics with expansive atmospheres, this record is for you.
