Cat: MULENV 019. Rel: 23 Aug 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Some (7:23)
  2. Kinda (7:13)
  3. Science (7:12)
Review: Mulen's latest must-check release is a collaborative affair from experienced producer Alexis Cabrera (Raummusik, Salty Nuts, Yaji) and Jorge Saveretti (Esperanza, Visionquest, Cadenza). Given their collective history, you'll be unsurprised to learn that the "Some EP" is really rather good. They set their stall out via an impressive title track that wraps spacey but funky riffs, deep space pads and undulating acid lines around a memorable bassline and typically swinging tech-house beats). "KInda" tips a wink to the glitchy, bass-heavy sound of Romanian minimal techno and the swinging intergalactic tech-house funk of Paris's YYY label, while "Science" is a deep, woozy and wonky affair full of minor key bleeps, jazzy motifs and locked-in beats.

  1. Saverio Celestri - "Ethereal" (6:38)
  2. Jacopo - "Aesthetic" (6:15)
  3. Otis - "Axes Of Continuity" (6:16)
  4. Fede Lijt - "Deflexion" (6:18)
Review: A dream team line up for this four way that heads off in various directions across detailed and trippy techno landscapes. Those who have been following these heads will understand what we mean- with the quartet all beginning to rise to prominence now and finally claiming the kind of respect they deserve. Saverio Celestri brings 'Ethereal', packed with direct cymbal work, lilting reversed organs creating leftfield-but-dancefloor business with plenty of usability. Midgar label manager Jacopo, toughest from the names here, takes us down an arpeggiated acid route, never quite unleashing but acting as precursor to whatever bangs come next. Otis' 'Axes of Continuity' has a simple three-four note melody mirrored by bumbling bass, and should sound ideal at anything with a free party vibe. Finally, Fede Lijt's 'Deflexion' goes deepest, twinkling chimes, submerged lows, plenty of snares.

  3. I'll Take You There (Dimitri From Paris re-edit) (7:48)
  4. I'll Take You There (The Shapeshifters remix) (7:42)
Review: Back in 2011, Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper debuted their Director's Cut project by teaming up with old pal Jamie Principle on "I'll Take You There". Here it gets the reissue treatment, with a trio of classic mixes being joined by a fresh revision from scalpel maestro Moplen. His version is delicious, with Principle's loved-up vocal rising above bubbly synth-bass, evocative organ lines, swirling synthesizer motifs and sunrise chords. There's another chance to enjoy Director's Cut's own warm and glassy-eyed "Signature Remix", a second spin for Dimitri From Paris's slightly breezier (but no less loved-up) re-edit and a boisterous funky house rework from the Shapeshifters that some may have missed first time around.

Review: Having appeared on the likes of Nous Disques, Dream Eater and Collection Artaud, it was only a matter of time before London beat splicer J-Shadow's glacial, unnerving textures and sounds would find a home on Bun The Grid. With strong senses of techno and electro deep in the low-end mix, highlights include the nutty, almost breakcore style flippery of "No Gravity" the powerful technoid dirge of the title track "Embers". Loaded with remixes from none other than Etch and Danny Scrilla, once again BTG have spoilt us rotten.

  2. Jabesh - "Meditation Dub" (3:55)
  3. I David - "Rocktone Melody" (4:06)
  4. I David - "Rock To The Dub" (4:01)
Review: Jabesh and I David combine to great effect here for a selection of dubs that fuse the old with the new. There are classic guitars and drums on title track "Hold A Meditation" but the broad, smeared synth bass adds some contemporary cool that makes it suitable for a range of different settings. The "Dub" version has lush wet claps and mesmeric filter work before a tooting top line on "Rocktone Melody" gets you in a different state of trance. Closer "Rock To The Dub" sees I David show off his mastery of the studio buttons and rounds out a solid 7".

Soul
  1. Don't Wake Me Up (2:36)
  2. The Jack Mod Kick (2:40)
Review: TRAMP Records' latest must-have "45" is a reissue of a killer seven-inch single that regularly changes hands for hundreds of pounds online. There's little info available about the artist or record, besides the fact that it was recorded and released in Norfolk, Virginia way back in 1992. A-side "Don't Wake Me Up" is a delicious chunk of fuzzy, heartfelt soul rich in leisurely beats, glistening guitars and an impassioned female lead vocal. Flipside "The Jack Mod Kick" is a genuine dancefloor stomper - a hazy slab of heavyweight funk full of skittish drum breaks, razor-sharp guitar licks and high-octane bass guitar.

  1. Don't You Want My Love (Joe Claussell 1986 Reel To Reel edit) (8:54)
  2. Don't You Want My Love (Cratebug More Love remix) (9:06)
Review: Defected's fabulous Glitterbox off-shoot has thankfully repressed these two fist pumping disco remixes of Debbie Jacobs' classic "Don't You Want My Love". Stepping up on the a-side is the master of the mix, EQer extraordinaire and founder of the legendary Body & Soul party, Joe Claussell. His remix is perfect for said New York party with its loose percussion, big string stabs and relentless disco drums. Cratebug strips things back to a more functional and contemporary club track that builds in layers, with subtle filters bringing the tension until finally he lets the groove drop, no doubt to devastating scenes on the dance floor.

Review: Oof! It's finally here; two east London mic dons link up over a heavy Chimpo beat on Jamakabi's Rhythm Rollers for a name that truly lives up to its name. Doing the rounds in various forms since last year, "Wickedest Ting" touches wax in two perfect version; the body-slamming original and a bashing jungle twist from the Ghosty Men. Wicked.

Review: Metalheadz might be celebrating 25 years in the game in 2019, but they are not spending too much time looking back. Instead, Goldie's vital label continues to serve up forward looking drum & bass, this time from Jem One. A year after his debut on the label he's back with another varied three tracker. Form the swirling pads of liquid roller "Lotus" to the more angsty, tightly coiled drums of old school jungle cut "Transpose" and on to darkened minimal stepper "The Hardcore", there is a lot to love here.

Review: Joe has been behind some of the most inventive rhythms and hard hitting club tunes of the past decade. Always happy to veer off-piste while drawing on bass, dubstep, techno, 140bpm workouts and everything in between. Here the Londoner makes a break from home label Hessle Audio to land on the equally cutting edge Comeme. "Rio Lea" is the pick: it's a loose rhythm coloured with samba skip, soul drenched strings and Latin flair that transports you directly to South America. The others aren't bad either to be fair, with "Line To Earth" exploring a slower, dubbed out groove, and "Get Centred" working the dance floor into a frenzy with its mad xylophone melodies, tight, percolating drums and tense chord stabs.

  5. Surging On Chapinero's Edge (5:44)
Review: While more usually recognised as Ann Arbor veteran Tadd Mullinix's acid house alias, JTC has always been more all-encompassing of classic electronic sounds. Taking in the aesthetics of nearby Detroit and Chicago, with Berlin techno and Belgian new beat influences along the way. With his new release on Spectral titled 'Indigo, Flesh and Fire', Mullinix takes a more direct and straight ahead route, with these infectious and functional techno tools that respectfully take their cues from the early Purposemaker and M-Plant back catalogue. From the hypnotic groove of "Innerloire Rendezvous" with its classic synopation and flanged hi-hats, the strobe-lit sensation of "Varastride" perfect for those heads down moments with its sonar pulse - that later makes way for that hands in the air melody. On the flip, we were particularly enamoured by the hi-tech jazz of "Surging On Chapinero's Edge" calling to mind the legend 'Mad' Mike Banks classic moments.

Review: You could be forgiven for expecting this EP on excellent upfront house imprint Lovedancing to be more of a curveball. After all, The Juan MacLean isn't known for mainstream posturing. It certainly comes with stacks of character and a clear intention to be heard. Bold, commanding and aimed squarely at feet, if mind-meltingly looped pumpers are your thing consider this an early Christmas. All four tracks are built from repetitive hooks, the most inescapable- 'Let Me Come Into Your Life'- will satisfy fans of Mr G's softer side, while 'The Lone Dancer' is destined for sun-drenched terrace bar systems. 'Body Language Pro', meanwhile, has more than a few nods to the French house heydays, with Sleazy McQueen and Cole Medina developing those elements into a beast that's slower to build in but guaranteed to work up a sweat.

Review: Life and Death continue to serve up brilliantly unpredictable releases, with this new one that brings together American DFA stalwart Juan MacLean with the UK's Me Me Me label head Man Power. On offer here is the pounding tribal house workout "Crescendo" which will hypnotise you with its polyrhythms until the track reaches an epic climax. This is followed by an edit from label boss DJ Tennis of "Excuse Me Daddy" on the flip, and closing out the EP is the majestic and mentalist journey down into the vortex that is "Praise The Toad" - a track that absolutely nails that L&D sound you've all come to know and love.
