Review: If we said 'a Latin funk cover of Michael Jackson's "Bad"' what would you say? If the answer is anything other than 'WTF? I need that in my life' we are officially worried about you. Who wouldn't want that? Not to let the cheeky b-side outshine the A, "Feelings" is a Banda Achilifunk original; rolling with a rhythm n' blues motif and some fly Spanish lyrics, it's feel good party joint with heaps of distinction.

The Beltran Love EP
Cat: FE 039. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Love Freq (6:40)
  2. Epic Soulmate (7:54)
  3. Controller (6:38)
  4. El Conquistador (6:45)
Review: Michigan artist John Beltran has long embodied the evocative, richly textured techno sound that has so long been synonymous with Detroit. He is in particularly majestic form on this one, however, with opener 'Love Freq' bringing scintillating hi hats and synths over dancing beats that are brilliantly restless. 'Epic Soulmate' has that sombre synth sound that has you gaming off into the distance, rueful for a love you once knew, then 'Controller' brings you back down to earth on a more punishing groove laced with darker bass notes. The manic and freeform 'El Conquistador' is a perfect end to this EP, which journeys much further than most techno albums ever do.

Meantime EP
Cat: NCSS 006. Rel: 11 Sep 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Deikh (7:43)
  2. Aerosol (7:03)
Review: Sukhumvit offshoot NCSS has scored something of a coup here, snapping up the first collaborative tracks from prolific tech-house veteran Nick Beringer (last seen on Burnski's high-flying Constant Black imprint) and rising star Sota (best known for his work on Ornate Music and Beringer's Rubisco label). A-side 'Deikh' is a bouncy delight, with the pair peppering a sturdy, rolling groove with bleeping electronics, tight organ riffs and sweat-soaked drum machine fills. They opt for a deeper, hazier sound on 'Aerosol', where hushed chords, undulating TB-303 acid lines and gentle electronic melodies slowly rise above a loose-limbed, spacey tech-house beat.

  3. PK 9 (6:14)
  4. HL (7:39)
Review: Since debuting on Bird Scarer in 2012, George Thompson AKA Black Merlin has delivered some of the most intoxicating, percussive and otherworldly electronic music around, much of it shot through with exotic South East Asian instrumentation, feverish percussion and plenty of atmospheric field recordings. He continues this invigorating approach on the Mod Ik EP, confidently strutting between seriously hallucinatory techno (the heavy and hypnotic title track), mind-mangling ambient acid (the beat-free electronic psychedelia of 'Miea'), dark and foreboding modular intensity ('PK9', whose lead lines and breathless bass are both unusual and inspired) and feverish early morning chuggers ('HL').

Fault Current
Cat: YP 001. Rel: 08 Sep 20
Drum And Bass
  1. Fault Current (4:46)
  2. Retrocognition (5:16)
Review: Brand new talent from Kenmore, Washington; Black Yukon Sucker Punch hurls himself into the ether with this foundation-fired self-release. Tapping into that classic late 90s/early 2000s techstep sound, both cuts rattle bones with minimal muscle and maximum tension. 'Fault Current' is a sci-fi inspired wriggler with twisted alien FX wrapping tightly around sinewy two-steps. 'Retrocognition' hits with a little more neuro, psychedelic touches. Think early Audio Blueprint and you're on the right dancefloor.

  4. Soundboy Cookie - "Mic Professional" (4:56)
Review: Southend-on-Sea party collective Gather are back with a quick follow up to their soon sold out debut offering STM back in March. It's another four track split EP with two tracks each by Soundboy Cookie and Bluetoof, who kicks off with the louche, sax flecked depths of 'Mistakes.' The Gradient mix is more doom laden with darker bass, and Soundboy Cookie then 'Brooklyn Swing' drops in some cheeky grooves and wonky chords to really pump the party. Last of all is the kinetic 'Mic Professional' with all its spin backs, stripped back beats and womp-womp bass. Delicious stuff.

  1. Revisiting The Sunshine (4:01)
  2. Funky Sensation (4:19)
Review: Jorun Bombay is one of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists and his fantastic cover of the recently turned 80 year old Roy Ayers in the form of 'Revisiting The Sunshine' is one of his biggest tunes. A recent reissue on white vinyl sold out in quick time so now comes another chance to own it, this time on black wax. This one followed Jorun's recent edit series and is authentic to its soulful core. As summer fades away and autumn looms, keep the sunny vibes alive with this golden, heart warming version. On the flip is something just as sunny - a fine version of 'Funky Sensation' that gets a precision Bombay treatment.

  4. B Side Bubbler (3:55)
Review: Breakage is back on his own increasingly vital label Index with a fifth fine EP. It continues in the tradition set already by the young imprint by being of the highest quality across all tracks. The opener has a vintage sound, with crunchy breaks and fizzing static racing over the face of the tune, while Break gets the nod for the remix and goes for something more twisted, intense and high tempo. 'Jah' is a complex collision of drum breaks, tin pot hits and deeply buried bass while closer 'B Side Bubbler' is a stripped back and skeletal roller.

Have Some Fun
Cat: OTS 187. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Have Some Fun (3:42)
  2. Energy To Burn (3:28)
Review: Jeff Lane formed his American funk and disco group in 1972 and has plenty of huge hits to his name. The two presented on this special new 7" are not amongst them, but are standout tracks for lovers of funk, soul and disco fusions. 'Have Some Fun' has the big strings and dazzling chords that soar to the cosmos, with buttery vocals leading the charge. On the reverse is the much quicker and more direct 'Energy To Burn' with its dense rhythm section, charging drum grooves and noodling bass riffs stitched deep into the hurried funk.

  1. Proper Distance (4:55)
  2. Comoving Distance (4:48)
Review: For the latest in their ongoing series of limited-edition, hand-numbered singles, Zurich outfit Phantom Island has turned to the label's in-house producer and "sound wizard", Florin Buchel. As you'd perhaps expect, there's much to admire on the producer's first single under his given name, particularly A-side 'Proper Distance'. This sees guitarist Roger Szedzalik add glistening, sun-soaked jazz solos to a dreamy, sunset-ready backing track rich in liquid synths, reggae bass and bubbly electronic beats. The leisurely, Balearic-focused vibe continues on the flip, where Buchel peppers a delay-laden drum machine beat with fretless bass, gently unfurling synthesizer melodies and flecks of echoing instrumentation.

  1. Past Futures (5:19)

  3. Gantm (5:21)
  4. Lessened By Lessons (4:47)
Review: Having established himself many moons ago on Alphabet Set, Cignol has gone on to become a firm fixture in the contemporary electro scene with drops on labels like Lunar Disko, Furthur Electronix, Seagrave and many more. Now he appears on 20:20 Vision with an EP that slots perfectly into the electro direction the label has been exploring in the past couple of years. 'Past Futures' pivots around a nagging acid line, a pitched-down vocal hook and an easy tempo, while 'Virtual Array' swerves for the plushest Drexciya-indebted territory. 'Gantm' brings forth more 303 action, matched with all kinds of other playful synth strokes and a tumbling beat. 'Lessened By Lessons' completes the set on a plaintive note, but with a similar palette of expressive synth lines and a keen sense of harmony powering the track.

Review: For their second missive, freshly minted Ukranian label Hypnohouse has chosen to showcase cuts from two hugely experienced producers: Madrid-based Unusual Systems founder Corp and sometime Slow Life regular Saverio Celestri. The former handles side A, first fusing chiming lead lines and formidably filthy acid bass on retro-futurist jacker 'Celestial Bells', before reaching for the strobes on the buzzing, trippy and intoxicating late night throb of 'Trancemotions'. Celestri meanwhile invites us to indulge in a little sweaty 'Virtual Sex' on a clanking chunk of cold wave/techno fusion, before offering up a blistering blend of high-octane drums, alien-sounding chords, bleeping electronics and buzzing bass ('Self Control').

Review: The somewhat mysterious Dopplereffekt project founded by Drexciya's Gerald Donald ends their six year production hiatus with this Tetrahymena EP for Berlin label Leisure System. Established by Donald in the mid '90s, Dopplereffekt remain one of techno's most enigmatic propositions with their brand of cold, stark electro complemented by a bold, Cold War-indebted aesthetic and a general disregard for performing live or giving interviews. Though Donald has remained active production wise, developing the NRSB-11 project with DJ Stingray which recently saw the release of the politically loaded Commodified album, the Tetrahymena EP is a welcome return for Dopplereffekt and undoubtedly the most high profile release yet from Leisure System.

Review: Detroit electro legends Dopplereffekt return to Leisure System for their fourth release on the Berlin based imprint. Athanatos is named after the angel of the planet Mercury in ancient Greek mythology, but that isn't so much the theme. Here the duo again explore subjects related to genetic conditions and chromosomal influences that define mortality across the EP's five tracks. After the brooding sonic landscapes of the title track , it's classic Mitchell & Nhan all the way on the majestic electronic funk of "Hayflick Limit" while devilishly enchanting slow burners like "Telomere" or "Mitosisin" lock you in with their hypnotic grasp. Raster-Noton founders Carsten Nicolai (who did the artwork) and Olaf Bender are said to have collaborated with the pair on this release.

  1. Dopplereffekt - "Delta Wave" (5:44)
  2. Objekt - "Ganzfeld" (5:53)
Review: In something of a dream pairing for Leisure System, this split disc spans the old guard of electro and those well versed in pushing it into new contortions. Dopplereffekt is of course one of the most lauded of all post-Drexciya projects, and new material comes few and far between. "Delta Wave" is a lavish, sweeping wonder of celestial voices and sci-fi mystery that satisfies all your desires without sounding like a re-hash of old material. On the flipside Objekt has risen to the occasion and delivered one of his most outright electro-infused belters to date, keeping the beat rigid but funky, and working similar amounts of drawn out pads into the mix while keeping the crafty edits and playful sounds as limber as ever.

Review: Next to come up out of the ever mysterious Wizard's Sleeve is electronaut DOT13. His opener '13' is a kicking and futuristic electro cut with a serenity and soothingness that is beautifully disarming. Things get more rickety on the stuttering drum programming of 'You Do Funk', which is also detailed with some lovely water droplets and groaning bass. There's more than a hint of astral disco to the popping beats and kaleidoscopic colours of 'Nightcrawler' and things end on the cosmic fairground ride that is 'Jukebox.' There is real freshness to be found in this one.

Review: Last year, Nick Holder's Treehouse Records put out Canadian trio Down To Erf aka MC Mathematik, and producers Steely Dan & Wal's 'Uprise' single ad it soon went. Now it's repressed having originally appeared on a Beatfactory compilation way back in 2001. It still sounds hot, however, with its noodling Rhodes keys and meandering bassline. Multiple voices add their own layers to the tune and make this a glowing, late night lullaby that cannot fail to melt your being. The instrumental is another killer cut from this outfit, who have a relatively small but perfectly formed discography.

  1. To Each His Own (remix) (3:44)
  2. To Each His Own (instrumental) (3:42)
Review: Deep house maestro Nick Holder's Treehouse Records reissues the remixes of Down To Erf's 'To Each His Own' a year after the original pressing flew off the shelves. MC Mathematik, and producers Steely Dan & Wal (aka Wall & Steel) did a fine job on the original, which they themselves have re-worked here. It's a super seductive jam with plenty of space between the beats and a nice trumpet line lingering up top like a warm breezy on a summer's evening. The smooth flowing rhythms are almost sung, lending them a harmonic feeling that adds to the overall lushness of the single.
