  4. Take The Shock Away (Pete Herbert version) (5:56)
Review: La dame Noir is a Marseille-based label who first crept onto vinyl with a crucial various artists release back in 2016. Now they're back with more of that noirish modern disco deviance that made them an exciting proposition first time around. "Take The Shock Away" is a bittersweet groover by Dawad and label co-founder Relatif Yann, with pitch-perfect vocals by Mounissa which sounds strong on its own. The label however has drafted in a list of big hitters to deliver remixes, from Vox Low's synthwave laced trip to Pete Herbert's punchy electro-disco burner. Whichever version you plump for, the quality is undeniable on this surefooted 12".

Ring Center (hand-stamped 12'')
Cat: EXT 004. Rel: 18 Sep 19
Techno
  1. DJ Gonzo & Dr Yes - "Ring Center" (6:17)
  2. Rough Thought - "Puneto" (6:44)
Review: No-nonsense German label EXT has gone back to basics here, delivering their first split-artist EP since 2016. DJ Gonzo and Dr Yes handle side A, unfurling a tactile but wonky techno jack-track ("Ring Center") full of jaunty, all action synth-bass, bleeping computer electronics, fluttering synth riffs and clanking drum machine beats that doff a cap to both Chicago jack and Motor City futurism. Rough Thought takes over on side B, charging through a bustling combination of rising and falling intergalactic synth lines, deep space chords, surging arpeggio bass and a drum track so sweaty that it could have been laid down by a drummer who has just downed four cans of the world's most repulsive energy drink.

  1. Mahogany - "Ride On The Rhythm" (Michael Gray remix) (7:05)
  2. Raw Silk - "Just In Time" (Michael Gray remix) (6:25)
Review: Full Intention man Michael Gray is the latest contemporary house producer to get his hands on the parts to classic cuts from the bulging West End Records catalogue. He has opted to rework two slightly deeper early '80s jams, starting with Mahogany's 1982 boogie cut "Ride On The Rhythm". His version is warm, sparkling and bass-heavy, offering the right balance between modern production techniques and the kind of effects utilized by the track's original producers. It's really good, keeping the spirit of the original track while dragging it into the 21st century. The same could be said of his boogie-house take on Raw Silk's "Just In Time", which boasts a similar balance of tidy new drums, spruced-up synths and swirling effects.

  4. Riccardo Rizza - "Mars" (5:26)
Review: The crew behind the Clut label has put together a fine debut EP here. It offers up a quartet of cuts from techno and electro producers renowned for the warm, melodious and emotive nature of their sound. To our ears, the best track comes from Riccardo Rizza, whose EP-closing "Mars" is a fine fusion of rolling tech-funk grooves, spacey chords and life-affirming, B12 style melodies. That said, John Shima's similarly-minded - and arguably even more positive - "Circulate" pushes it close, while Odracir's analogue bass-propelled bleep-out "Set" and Alec Falconer and Rob Amboule's wonderfully deep "Clarkspin" push it mighty close.

Techno
  1. Manifesto (5:57)
  2. Don't Leave (6:07)
  3. Clouds (5:05)
Review: Berlin-based DJ and producer Denise Rabe has become something of a cult heroine since her first releases in 2015. The years since have found her operate in her own parallel techno world, where psychoactive sounds and heavy drones permeate your ears, then your brain, then your whole being. Now she steps away from her own Rabe label for a debut on Stroboscopic Artefacts, which finds her take charge of the Totem series. Opener "Manifesto" is a driving techno groover with ghoulish synth designs and keys from the 5th dimension, then "Don't Leave" will utterly trip you out with its panning pads and mysterious leads. "Clouds" completes the journey with doom laden and wide spread kick drums that lurch over and over through some ruined post-human world. Tip!

Review: Chicago groove professor and deep digging selector Rahaan makes a welcome return with two juicy disco funk edits. "Down Comes The Rain" struts with a Princely vibe and a piano-slapping flare that'll have your floor dancing for well over 17 days. Flip for an equally sweet take on a cult 82 boogie joint where Rahaan proves you actually can have your cake and indeed eat it. Crumbs!

  1. Centrifuge (9:46)
  2. Relic Reworked (5:39)
Review: Random XS was founded in 1991, when DJ Zero One (Sander Friedeman) joined forces with Arno Peeters to perform live at a small underground party in Utrecht before the latter left three years later and was replaced by Frank de Groodt. After the long awaited re-release of their 1992 Djax-Up-Beats classic "Give Your Body" last year on Delsin, they return with a pair of unreleased jams for fellow Dutch imprint MOS Recordings. Both tracks are said to be recorded in the early '90s, but reworked and remastered for "heavy club impact". On the A side is some proper minimal mentalism on the frantic and tunnel vision "Centrifuge", followed by the sublime 303 wizardry of "Relic Reworked" on the flip, which hails "all aboard the acid express!" better than any other.

  1. Storm (5:27)
  2. Storm (Arp Duppy Chip mix) (5:28)
Review: Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 12 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

  1. Out There (7:15)
  2. What Is Love (8:13)
Review: German artist Ben Rau has been amassing a fine back catalogue on two of his own labels, Inkal and Meta, since first debut on Fuse in 2011. Seth Troxler and The Black Madonna have been dropping plenty of his material in recent times and this firmly club focused new 12" is another useful weapon. "Out There" in particular is a big house track with propulsive drum programming and busy bass that will get large crowds bumping. "What Is Love" on the flip is a deeper but driving cut with spaced out pads that will be perfect for later in the night when things get more cosmic and introspective.

Review: Following up a great release by Wyndom Earl earlier this year and a couple of wicked ones by label boss Arsy, the ever reliable Hamburg stalwart Christopher Rau (Smallville/Money $ex) presents the next installment for Berlin-based Rixdorf Jams - serving up material that's much more ferocious and upfront than we've ever heard from him. From the hard hitting subterranean electro-bass of "Lapidem", to the hypnotic tribal techno banger "MTP" and the mesmerising B side cut "Drei Und Zwanzig Karl Heinz", this is exactly the type of utlra-deep mood music you have come to know and love from Rau.

  2. Barbara Mason - "Another Man" (Dr Packer rework) (5:46)
  3. Shirley Lites - "Heat You Up Melt You Down" (Dr Packer rework) (6:55)
Review: The latest contemporary mix-master to get his hands on the West End catalogue is Dr Packer, an Aussie re-editor-turned-producer whose recent outings on Glitterbox have made him an in-demand artist. He kicks things off by delivering a "multi-track" mix of Raw Silk boogie classic "Do It To The Music" that offers a superb mix of beefed-up synth-bass, echoing vocal snippets, stripped-down breakdowns and New York proto-house style production trickery. Over on side B he tightens up and funks up Barbara Mason's similarly synth-heavy electrofunk classic "Another Man" - a song about a woman losing her man to, you guessed it, another fella - before subtly tooling up and extending Shirley Lites' peerless "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)".

  1. I Don't Dance I Make Money Moves (6:03)
  2. 4AM (6:23)
Review: Little known fact: the coloured kiss marks on Puss' white label releases are made by "real live humans". Or at least that's what label bosses Kornel Kovacs and HNNY say. That's pretty much the only information about this release, which appears to have been made by producers with the initials "RD" and "KF". "I Don't Dance I Make Money Moves" places Cardi B's hip-hop/R&B vocal over a warm and melodious backing track that sits somewhere between snappy electro and Balearic deep house. It's summery as hell and twice as hot! "4AM" on the other hand is sludgy, sleazy and percussive, with Afro-house style rhythms and chunky bass underpinning jaunty steel pan melodies. In other words, it's a tasty tropical house workout.

Review: Reade Truth has been dropping plenty of heat lately on Cartulis and Warm Fiction, but now he's back on his own label Path. There's a lysergic, freaky twist to the strain of electro-techno he's exploring, where the synths bubble and trickle with playful energy while staying rooted in a nocturnal underworld of basement-ready business. "Without A Doubt" is especially captivating on this tip, while the slight move towards melody on "Brain Damaged" is just as welcoming. Watch out for "A Secret Heaven" though - a consummately punchy New York groove garnished with plenty of off-kilter sonic debris.

Going right back to the roots for this, both sides are crusty, clattering and rougher than a cat's tongue. Just the way we like them.
