  1. Henkhisesui (5:30)
  2. Palaeeudyptinae (6:01)
Review: A year after it first appeared in stores, De:Tuned has decided to reissue the ninth instalment in their terrific De:10 series of singles and EPs, this time on purple vinyl. It's a rather special one, because it contains two early, previously unreleased 1992 productions from Andy Turner and Ed Handley, not as Plaid, but rather under the rarely used Atypic alias. A-side "Henkhisesui" is simply superb. It opens with a deliciously atmospheric intro full of dreamy ambient chords and bubbly electronic melodies, before introducing a crunchy, early IDM style beat pattern and stabbing analogue bass. The marginally longer "Palaeeudyptinae" is warmer and more tactile, with the pair peppering a skewed, post-hip-hop beat with blissful electronic melodies and glassy-eyed synthesizer sounds.

Review: Given the amount of energy he's put into his "Tim's Twitter Party" online listening events this year, it's perhaps surprising that Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has found time to record new music. Ascent of the Ascended, his new EP, follows on from May's well-received solo album, I Love The New Sky, and lands on orange translucent vinyl. Fans will find plenty to cheer, including two songs recorded with, and produced by, Charles Heywood: the effervescent title track and 'Yours To Be', a deliciously jangling, life-affirming affair built around multi-tracked acoustic guitars, soft-touch percussion and lilting horn lines. The set's four other tracks, including a rather lovely new version of Charlatans classic 'The Only One I Know', were recorded "in session" during a Paste Magazine event in New York.

Review: Two much over soul vocalist from the North Soul era step up on one mighty 7" here with Tyrone Davis' essential version of Clarence Carter's 'Slip Away' on the first side. It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible. Flip it over and drop that needle for a different but equal good sound, this time as Gene Chandler builds a high energy and intense vibe as he covers James Brown's huge 'There Was A Time'. Sharp, driving and high impact, it's the second sizzler on this fine 7".

This ode to real life clubbing kick off with 'Doves' which pairs tripped out sound effects and tropical jungle motifs with a well swung, chunky house groove that comes backed by some serious bass. The second missive is more airy and expansive. 'MPH' blends house and 2-step to dreamy effect with nice rich synths and knocking kick drums that get you up and looking lively.

Review: Introversion comes correct with more of his artful techno weapons on the correctly named ARTS label. It is three years since he debuted on the label and shows a real evolution in his sound across the four cuts which make a deep dive into his consciousness. The opener is a hard hitting banger with overdriven drums and a wall of silvery percussion. 'Lucid' is a dreamscape to get lost in with scintillating percussion and sombre pads, then 'Myoclonus' flips it up with a heavenly vocal layered over huge, robust breakbeats. Powerful stuff.

Time Of The Season (Record Store Day Black Friday 2020)
Cat: MXMRK 2037. Rel: 27 Nov 20
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Time Of The Season (edit by Mr K) (7:41)
  2. Theme From Great Cities (edit by Mr K) (9:35)
Review: Reaching deep into the earliest foundations of his voluminous collection, Danny Krivit presents a psychedelic pop classic rearranged for today's sound systems and setlists. Recorded in the Beatles' Abbey Road studio at the height of the Summer Of Love, the Zombies' "Time Of The Season" is firmly linked in pop culture to the late '60s and the Vietnam era, although it almost never made it out to a wider audience. Ignored on its initial release, it was given a second chance by the label as the last gasp from a band that had officially split up a year before. This time around the song steadily gained fans and word-of-mouth plays in the U.S. and by the summer of 1969, two years after it had been recorded, "Time Of The Season" was ubiquitous and well on its way to being firmly enshrined as an emblem of the era.

Krivit's edit highlights the parade of lush sonic textures that ornament the hip composition, from the iconic, exquisitely echoed bass-clap-exhale riff that opens the song to the cascading Hammond organ solos of Rod Argent. Naturally, this MEU issue keeps the audio quality at its highest level, the better to appreciate these nuances. "It's a song from my childhood that really struck a chord," Danny says. "Over the years I often played a rough edit which always seemed to go over great. The song seemed to get better and better, and age like fine wine." We agree!

From flowers and incense, we move to glass and steel. "Theme For Great Cities" envelops us in a soaring, intense groove, as emblematic of the post-punk no wave style of 1981 as "Time of the Season" was to its own era. Produced by Gong's Steve Hillage, this futuristic instrumental is a bit like Bowie's wordless works with Eno, with an added downtown edge. "The original really struck me," Danny recalls, "especially at Roxy in the early '80s hip hop nights, on that Richard Long sound system... It really blew me away with its atmosphere!"

Danny's edit combines the lean and mean original with a trackier remixed version, cleanly lifting off on an epic ride that clocks in at nearly ten minutes. With the revised rhythm section and its quick-punched low end sandwiching the meat of the original's punishing drums and aggressive, picked bass line, Mr. K gives us the best of the expanded sonics of the remix without losing the atmospherics of the original take.

  1. The Truth Is Elsewhere (10:48)
  2. What Comes Next? (5:08)
  3. Phantasmagoria (6:40)
Review: London-based, Belgian-Congolese artist Nikisi has launched her own label and this is the first release. Given that she has such a unique and singular sound it's a wonder she hasn't started her own thing before now. Cutting utterly loose here she layers up hard, flat drums with white noise and what sound like ancient drones to make for a hard but hypnotic weapon. It's dark but light, controlled but chaotic. 'Phantasmagoria' explores the same dichotomies, with poly-rhythms pummelling away beneath haunting synth drones up top. In between is the glitchy 'What Comes Next?', another stark, inventive track that is challenging yet rewarding.

  1. Taccin De Taims (8:05)
  2. Infatuescion (6:30)
  3. Du Iu Uont (3:20)
Review: Italian rapper, disc jockey and record producer Davide Bassi is the man behind the new Com Era Italy label. His third missive is another trip back to the sound of his youth, the disco, electro, funk and soul of the 80s that still sounds so hot in 2020. 'Taccin De Taims' kicks off with nice dirty boogie bass and happy chords that ease you into a sweet vibe. 'Infatuescion' will be recognisable to fans of Omar S who has sampled the vocal on his own work. Lastly, 'Du Iu Uont' is a jittery disco jam with charity, cold as ice perc and nice retro synths. Warmth comes from the lead hook and funky bass, both of which make this another gem.

Review: Onyx formed in 1972 with the original line up of Aaron and Wendell Basey, Malvin Scott, and Ronald Busby. They came up in the Bay Area of San Fran and worked with various other bands and producers before the Basey Brothers went it alone. They set up the NIA label and kicked it off with the two soul gems presented here. 'Help Me' is a golden cut with big horns and strings, driving rhythm section and vocal harmonies to swell the heart. 'Spellbound' then sends you into a spin with its soaring vocals reaching up to the heavens, gentle drums and warming keys.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Johnny Osbourne - "Ice Cream Love" (3:24)
  2. Roots Radics - "Extra Time One" (2:45)
Review: Produced by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and mixed by Scientist, 'Ice Cream Love' first slipped out it in its native Jamaica way back in 1980. The typically languid, weighty and dub flecked cut is built around a tweaked, replayed version of Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'He Prayed' riddim (a groove that has been used on countless reggae records before and since). Osbourne's lead vocal is typically relaxed and quietly soulful, while the involvement of Scientist on mixing desk duties guarantees more bass-weight and subtle dub inflections than your average roots number. Turn to the flip for a more spaced-out instrumental dub version based around the same riddim recording, with more effects-laden magic from Scientist.

Review: Longtime techno innovator Silent Servant finds himself on the cult Hospital Productions to close out this year in visceral fashion. 'Harm In Hand' is many things - dark wave synth and jittery techno and it even has a hint of jerking EBM rhythms. It's a trip back to the future on a pulsing wave of menace. 'Damage' then cuts more loose, with spraying synths and crashing hits trapping you in dystopia and 'Death Of Decadence' bring all manner of raw textures, twisted synth lines and stark drums to a line techno groove.

Review: Aru Takamura wanted to be a singer from her early teenage years and she soon made it happen. She had a few albums out and many EPs in the 80s and always brought a unique sound to soul. She later settled on singing in her native Japanese tongue but on the lead single here 'I'm In Love' she also dropped in a bit of English, specifically on the big chorus. The tune is a vibrant disco banger here touched up by Yoshioka Dynamite, who also tackles the more downbeat and sentimental 'Appeal To You' with its harmonica melodies and bubbling synth bass.

Review: New Flesh Records boss Umwelt returns with a searing new record that brings to a close the French producer's Future trilogy. It started back in 2015 with When Future And Past Collapse, then took in 2017's Encoding The Future on Shipwrec and still has lots to offer with this big finale. 'Escape The Future' is a haunting cut that keeps you on edge with its unsettling and glassy synths while 'Pionners From Earth' is slower, crispy and devastatingly final. There's more darkness from the depths of space explored on 'Wormholes Through Space' while 'Horizon Lost' kicks like a mule as it explores more contemplative moods.

  4. Awakening (9:33)
Review: The dance-classical-ambient twilight zone is as vast as it is long-running, spanning everything from Cafe del Mar remixes to contemporary compositions by the likes of Nils Frahm. But it's usually the electronic world bringing classical in, not the other way round. On this basis alone, Dutch pianist and composer Michiel Borstlap taking on work by fellow Netherlander Joris Voorn, a big name in the trancier-tech world, certainly stands out from the crowd.

Fans of the latter will likely hear many of the melodic patterns have survived, but if you're approaching this with no prior experience it would be impossible to tell this was originally club-related stuff. Tranquil, hazy, midsummer afternoon ivories that feel as un-rushed as they do utterly timeless, arguably peaking with the endlessly circling arpeggios of 'Ringo', wherein the listener is rendered helpless by the hypnotic keys.
