Review: Some wicked underground sounds coming out of Ukraine (and beyond) on offer here by new imprint Hypnohouse. Darren Woollard aka Dawl who has been putting out some wicked grooves on Libertine, Furthur Electronix and Klasse Wrecks lately gets into some proper bleep techno action on "Output" while Kiev-based Trippsy finishes up the A side with the strobed-out and tunnelling sensations of "Flashback". Flip over for Uruguay's Fede Lijtmaer who channels some Dopplereffekt vibes on "Passing By" followed by Wulffius' retro techno jam "Salty Breeze". Tip!

  5. Number 8 (5:40)
Review: Electro is very much back in vogue, but for Steffi's vital Klakson label it's a sound that never went away. This EP is a particularly special one that welcomes Fastgraph, aka Dutchman Frank de Groodt, back into the fold more than a decade since his last official release (which also came on this label). These tracks are fast, funky machine music with crispy, crashing metal hits and warped synths that are made to devastate the dance floor. The frazzled bass of "Number 8" sure is pleasing, but to really make a mark, drop the manic lines and overdriven drums of "Interface" and see people really lose their minds.

Ten Feet Tall (remixes) (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: BST 002MX. Rel: 03 Sep 19
Dub
  1. Ten Feet Tall (Loyoto remix) (9:31)
  2. Ten Feet Tall (Winnie & Somow remix) (7:43)
Review: It's been four years since Fat Freddy's Drop's "Ten Feet Tall" and the ongoing remix series that joins the dots between the New Zealand outfit and the best beat makers in Berlin. Winnie & Somow are house and reggae aficionados who straddle that divide on a remix that has a rumbling bottom end and super silky lead vocal from Joe Dukie. As much as it makes you want to move, it also tugs at the heartstrings. LoYoTo then layer in endless reverb to their remake, which is invitingly cavernous and dubbed out as they rework Dukie's vocal into something more detached and blissed out.

Review: Fat Frog's second EP of 2019 on his own Purple Fade finds him link with Donovan Kingjay and Addis Pablo. It's "Never Giving Up" first off with a spacious dub and tight studio work making it a clean and crisp affair that complements the heartfelt deliveries of Kingjay nicely. Things get more spaced out and cosmic on "Version" and "Melodica Cut" before finishing off with a stripped back, slower and more subliminal version.

Review: It's been six years since Lewis Fautzi debuted on Soma, and since then he's become a real techno powerhouse. His latest shows yet more evolution in his sound across four streamlined and hypnotic "Extinction" cuts. "F01" is alluringly low key as drums roll over a frosty and frozen tundra, then "F02" ups the ante with steel plated kicks and sonar-like pulses that burrow deep. After the warped synths of "F03" comes closer "F04", the most heady of the lot thanks to its MIllsian minimalism and infinite melodic loops.

Electro
  1. Elastic Collisions (4:26)
  2. Octodecillion (7:05)
  3. Probabilities (7:06)
  4. Mechanomics (6:05)
Review: Unstoppable electro machine Carl Finlow (aka Silicon Scally) lands on Orson with more of that impeccable robo-funk he's so revered for. "Elastic Collisions" leads the charge with a tough and teasing workout that works around a heavy low end and plenty of sparkling sound design up top. "Octodecillion" keeps things on a dystopian tip, where a bleak future sounds as funky as it does ominous. "Probabilities" heads into a less floor-focused space where thick layers of buffed and polished synth wriggles collide in high-definition. "Mechanomics" completes the set with another taut belter geared towards the heads down section of the party.

  3. Fio Fa - "Prospects" (6:19)
  4. Sasha Vodnik - "Rusty Trombone" (5:31)
Review: Inaugurating fresh imprint Future Funktion are a couple of relative unknowns, but they are certainly on to promising things if this riveting debut EP is anything to go by. The enigmatic collection of artists get those classic Sheffield vibes going, with Irie Nation aka Tomas Station providing full effect on the electrifying groove of "Assinie", followed by the off-kilter retro bounce of "Nina, I Miss You Dearly" by Vagara and the cheesy yet irresistible rave vibes of B side cut "Rusty Trombone" from Sasha Vodnik and the truly deep groove of "Prospects" by Fio Fa. For fans of classic bleep and first wave techno sounds similarly explored by imprints like Art of Dark, Time Passages and My Own Jupiter - this one will be right up your alley.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Nowel (6:33)
  2. Jowanne (6:39)
  3. Nowel (Varhat remix) (6:58)
Review: Four years ago, Vincent Lemieux + Guillaume & The Coutu Dumont made their collaborative debut as Flabbergast via a fine EP on Circus Company. They've been silent since, meaning that this belated sequel on Yoyaku feels like a big release. "Enweye" operates towards the deeper end of the stripped-back tech-house spectrum, with the duo wrapping intergalactic synthesizer melodies around rock solid kick drums, crashing cymbals and fluid tribal percussion on impeccable opener "Nowel". "Jowanne" is arguably even deeper, with cascading ambient lead lines tumbling down over a shuffling rhythm track and more tropical drum hits. Over on side B, Varhat offers his interpretation of "Nowel", in the process delivering a loose-limbed tech-house percussion jam with hazy, sun-kissed melodies occasionally rising above the sweat-soaked beats.

Drum And Bass
  1. Just Stop (5:32)
  2. Flatline (5:27)
Review: Those whose jungle history goes all the way back to the formative days of drum & bass culture may remember Flatliner, an East London/Essex producer whose 1994 release on RAM Records, "The Big Bang", was something of an anthem at the time. The two previously unheard cuts showcased on this 12" - his first since the 1990s - were both recorded in 1995 when the producer was at the peak of his powers. "Just Stop" is particularly potent, with stabbing analogue bass, weighty sub-bass tones, minimalist bleeps and dreamy pads rising above a crunchy, pitched-up Amen break. "Flatline" is a little more rough and tough, with creepy chords and female vocal snippets riding a fiendishly edited, cut-up jungle rhythm and insanely weighty sub-bass.

Serving up this riveting new four tracker for Archie Hamilton's Moscow imprint here, Gavanescu is in fine from: from the rolling main room thumper "The Gathering", to the swing-fuelled acid house inflected groove of "Balance Right" to the deep minimal house of "Sepe Patru" on the flip which is aimed squarely at the dancefloors of Bucharest's renowned afterhours scene. All killer no filler on this one here - tip!

Review: Hoarder continues to impress here with another classy collection of serious club heat. It comes from Italian born, New York based artist Fr!sky Buziness and marks his best work to date. All four tracks deal in proper, original tech house with a superbly smooth and seductive sense of late night funk. "Grey Goo Romance" has a gooey groove with sci-fi motifs that race along, while "Bananafish" channels early Terry Francis with its clipped and slick drums and swirling cosmic pads. "Skyhook" is awash with alien lifeforms and brain cleansing synth tones that are shiny and reflective, then finally "Aurora" pumps the party with perfectly pressurised drum loops and a whole ecosystem of spaced out sound effects. This is high grade dance floor weaponry from start to finish.

Review: This is the third and final entry in Nils Frahm's Encores series and it finds the celebrated contemporary piano man layer in more percussive and electronic elements than the previous two instalments. The source music was made as part of the sessions for his last album "All Melody" and honed during live performances. As fans will know, "All Armed" here has been a staple of those live sets for some time and is 12 minutes of plaintive piano playing and wallowing synths that will sink you deep into the German's expressive world.

Review: There is something about good 7"s that makes them seem extra special, and this is a prime example from City Baby Records: a double a-side of timeless grooves that are disco tinged exquisites from start to finish. The outfit behind them is Freaky, a soul gang from Minneapolis who apparently hide away deep in Tokyo's underground disco scene. "Running" is a delicate affair with neat bass riffs and happy chords that make for dreamy listening. "Sailin" is slower and more deep cut, with tooting leads and the sort of carefree vocals that will melt anyone's heart.

  1. FSOM - "Track Six" (5:43)
  2. Andy Rantzen - "Harmonic Eye" (4:17)
Review: Melbourne-based Efficient Space continue to plunder the vaults of their local electronic music legacy on their latest release. Indeed it's a rather parochial affair on the A side which features Future Sound Of Melbourne - an electronic group comprised of Davide Carbone, Josh Abrahams and Steve Robbins. Each respective artist went on to achieve considerable success with their solo efforts afterwards - Abrahams in particular finding mainstream success on the pop drum'n' bass anthem "Addicted To Bass" in the late '90s. Their offering "Track Six" is a true zeitgeist of early '90s techno that takes the best aspects of US and European sounds of the time. On the flip, Sydney legend Andy Rantzen (of duo Itch-E and Scratch-E (along with Paul Mac)) offers up the fairly minimal and hypnotic jam "Harmonic Eye".
