Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Review: Hyperdrive's label debut was a biggie that brought together old and new-school techno on one fizzing EP. The follow-up comes soon after and this time makes no bones about being a Rave Revival. Anthrophia's 'The Voice' kicks off with what is a hefty breakbeat cut with edgy rave stabs and slamming bass. Dimension 23 - 'Fascination' (Seb G mix) then takes a more stripped-back approach with turbocharged synths layered up over silky drums. Centuras brings plenty of bright, euphoric prog energy to the urgent drum funk of 'Jizz' and last of all Dimension 23's 'The Eagle' then kicks out more dusty old-school breaks with machine gun synth fire. A potent EP, make no mistake.

Review: Armed with analogue and modular synthesisers, Southern Italian producers Marco Cassanelli and Deckard take you on an emotive journey inspired by geometry and symmetry for T.A. The Splitted EP starts out with the desolate dub techno textures of 'Abandoned Town' while the spaced-out cut 'Triangle' and the hypnotising 'Rectangle' (part 1) make for more experimentally minded tracks.

Review: Following up the inaugural release by Braintalk, Zurich-based label Human Sense Technology returns for its second edition here, this time from hometown hero Dan Piu. He rebooted his career after a 16 year hiatus a few years ago and has been more prolific than ever, with releases on Childhood Electronix, Cartulis, and Hizou Deep Rooted Music. The Modern Utopia Thoughts EP is dedicated to his youth and influenced by future visions of creation, featuring early '90s UK techno sounds that are very much in fashion at the moment ('Dysfunctional / 'Libertarian On A Mission') deep subterranean 303 acid journeys Modern (the title track) and classic Chicago house tropes as heard on 'The NATA Liaison'.

Review: Two underground artists with many years in the scene behind them in Darwin Chamber and DJ Spun come together for the second in their Episode series on Rong Music. Once again they dig into the sounds of their formative years while also looking to the future as they blend dub, trance and techno into lithe new forms. 'The Revolution' is a mid-tempo and atmospheric roller with hypnotic vocals, while 'The Playa' is a deft bit of electronic minimalism with a deep space feel and ticking 808 sounds. Things get more loose with the warped synths and dusty tech beats of 'Dysfunction' while 'Acid Tounge' closes with trippy designs, a skeletal rhythm and a sense of late-night melodic and afterparty mischief.

Review: Tale Of Us's Afterlife label has been out in front when it comes to melodic techno for the last couple of years. It was the first to push the style heavily and continues to find the best new artists to help develop it. This new one-sided 12" brings tithe Kevin de Vries and breakout talent Mau P for an epic main room prog cut 'Metro' that its lit up with pixelated chords and spraying pads, icy drum fills and grandiose arrangements that place you at the centre, gazing on in awe at the scale of the techno that unfolds around you. It's effective, to say the least.

Review: 1O Pills Mate has become a new home for throwback rave, techno, trance and hardcore sounds in recent times. The label has built up a fine head of steam this year and now DJ Heartstring does the business across another four tracker designed to make a big impact in the club. 'Lost In Emotion' races out of the block on clipped beats with trance-y chords then 'In Der Nacht' ups the anti with a euro dance sound and 'Bubbly Paradise' layers up nice heady, hypnotic chords filled with late night colour before 'Sao Paulo Fever' brings the rave to a close with plenty of carnival whistles.

Review: Since debuting the alias on Klasse Wrecks back in 2016, Tim Schumacher has used the DJ Normal 4 project as a vehicle for his kaleidoscopic, psychedelic musical fantasies, drawing on a pool of influences including ambient techno, early psy-trance, electro and house-tempi breakbeat hardcore. It's a vividly hallucinatory but club-ready sound that rarely fails to hit the spot, as this new outing proves. Mind-mangling TB-303 acid lines are the order of the day on ambient techno-goes-breaks opener 'Call of the Valley' and the Brown Album-era Orbital flex of 'Enjoi', while 'Selva' is a trance-inducing stomper full of rising and falling lead lines and trippy electronics. To round things off, Schumacher dips the tempo and doffs a cap to the ultra-trippy end of the new beat spectrum (the excellent 'Energee').

Erol Alkan flips the track into a psychedelic whirlwind, breaking down barriers with glitchy, unpredictable beats, while SNYL brings a more hypnotic vibe, leaning into deep bass and subtle, entrancing textures. Yulia Niko strips it back to a deeper, atmospheric sound, crafting a slow-burning tension that grabs you from start to finish. Liquid Earth opens up with the spaced-out synths and electronic house sounds of '1_HP_D' then Art Of The State gets a little more tranced out and cosmic on '2_HP_D'. Dan Piu's '3_HP_D' is a tech house exploration with wispy sci-fi leads and a playful rhythm then Luis Malon & Seb G combine for the turbo-charged tech of '4_HP_D.' The legendary Freddy Fresh closes down with a high-speed sound on '5_HP_D.' Says the label, "Hyperdrive is dedicated to preserving the rich history of electronic music," and on this evidence, it will do so expertly.

Review: By the time they released Raumgleiter in 1998, Der Dritte Raum were already legends of the German techno-trance scene. This all-time classic album from the breakthrough years of the sound also saw the project move to a major label - Virgin - but now it's being brought back home to Harthouse, the iconic Frankfurt imprint which first nurtured the sound. The scope of the album is wide and playful, teasing ear catching synth lines which keep the mood fun and freaky, not least on the likes of 'Bedruck', while there's an epic tone to standout trance monster 'Hale Bopp' thanks to the cascading arps and relentless forwards thrust. Of its time but wholly relevant in the current zeitgeist, this is the kind of 90s techno reissue that makes perfect sense.
