Review: After debuting on Kaizenrecordsberlin back in 2020, Gauvain finally makes a second appearance with this sure-footed EP for Shaque & DJ Tjizza's Berlin-based label Mood Waves. There's a sense of the trancey tech house scene in the playful threads running through these tracks - cheeky synth lines with a little wriggle to them and plenty of ear-catching samples. 'Suspended Animation' is an especially flamboyant cut, but really they're all out to bring a little naughtiness to the dancefloor and inspire some sharply defined figures to be thrown. Review: Humanoid Recordings co-founder 4d lays down another four-track 12" for the label, scouring the weightier and scrapier ends of minimal and acid house, all while teasing out a retro-robotic edge. Only an artist with a real sense of humour can invoke ideas of 'Stupidity' and 'Quantum Theory' in the same breath; both tracks betray the unified whimsy and intelligence that a successful acid house and techno artist must portray in order to win hearts. The latter uses a particularly sticky, hard-to-pin-down 4x4 kick style; contrast to B1 'World In Our Head', which portrays a psychic model of the outside world through trilling trance lines, and the meek glissandos of 'Sowie Lockers', securing an indeterminate but funky mood.

The previous two were so well received, this next one was destined to come out sooner than later. Perlon fans know what to expect from their label of choice and Ivan delivers the goods. Those addictively quirky and fonky jackin' minimal techno jams. The title track is that and then some! We especially like the sexy jam 'Waiting For My Love'. Expect the unexpected when you flip over the record as 'Close the Door' is a full-on acid banger that combines high energy techno into what sounds like a video game soundtrack theme song! Closing things out is the wild sounding 'Fear & Madness in the Desert'. We are smiling at the thought of someone playing out these corkers to audience. Expect to see WTF typefaces everywhere!

Review: For those who dig what was once called progressive house, the Balance series from Australian label EQ has always been a "must check". Most contributors tend to push the boat out, resulting in deeply melodic and otherworldly sets that blur the boundaries between true mix and full-on production. That's certainly the case here, as Spanish DJ/producer (and part-time TV sound designer) Henry Saiz carefully crafts two discs of prog-not-prog blissfulness. Saiz's sound is based on the fusion of IDM electronica and shuffling, early morning house, and that's the overriding theme here - giving the mix an enjoyably fluid sound and style.

Review: Jacopo Latini is an Italian producer just breaking through with some choice releases on Mood Waves and Conceptual Moods. He's back on the former label with a lush new 12" of progressive house that leads in with the epic strains of 'Rumore Bianco' - the kind of track to get a crowd swooning thanks to its emotive, plaintive tone. Review: Josh Ludlow shows that he knows a thing or two about crafting superb arps and lush prog house records with this new outing on Nocturne Music. 'Mindways' is a brilliantly colourful opener with neon lines and bubbling sequences over fleshy drums. 'Touch' channels a bit of Metro Area style nu-disco production with its cowbells, textured bassline and late-night allure, and 'A Little Love' then gets more deep cut and steamy with some sensuous vocals and vast, pillowy kicks. Review: Under the border umbrella of the Yoyaku crew, Kord El makes a strong debut appearance with this first EP on Superbanger. The vibe on the record is instantly detectable as balmy, trippy tech house which stays on the subtle side of the trance spectrum and lets the groove take centre stage. 'Kryptonight' is a swirling, hazy mind warp peppered with samples and hypnotic chimes, anchored by the warmest of basslines. 'Grammy' is a slightly techier, dubbier affair for when the party's fired up a notch, and 'Stereo Solitude' plays around with breaks in a delicate fashion for maximum rolling effect. 'Phantone Zone' slips a little 303 into the soup, and makes it sound wholly natural in another prime slice of contemporary wigged-out house.

Review: Berlin based label Solenoid is headed up by Erta Ale, aka Italian producer Fabrizio Nocci. His latest release continues the theme of warm, big room house music he's been pushing for some time now, kicking off with the swirling pads and thumping rhythm section of 'Nirvana'. It's got a distinctly early 90s vibe, with plenty of melodic hand holds to dig your fingers into, while 'Panorama' has a swishy, disco-tinted sassiness to take you away in the heat of the night. 'The Cure' kicks off the B side with a springy, techy approach that doesn't hold back on the big synth lines, and then We Amps steps up for a remix of 'Panorama' which keeps things funky without losing that peak time demeanour which persists throughout the record.

Review: Liquid Earth is another alias for the cult underground house beat maker Urulu and here he lands on Kalahari Oyster Cult with another fine bit of futurist house. 'Scope Zone' is a great meeting point between cosmic synth work, spaced out breaks and retro house action. It's got a fat bassline that powers it onwards and some mice subtle prog melody. On the reverse is a Youandewan remix from the Berlin based Brit who is in superb form right now. He smooths things out, keeps the bounce and heads for the stars. A tidy two tracker for sure.

Review: Simona Faraone's label, New Interplanetary Melodies, welcomed Feel Fly for an EP that is "inspired by the ancient and mysterious Etruscan culture, whose peoples inhabited the historical-geographical region of central Italy." He hails from Italy himself of course and has written soundtracks for movies as well as great dancefloor tunes. The tracks here combine dreamy melodies with hurried breakbeats, corrugated acid techno jams and 90s post-rave house sounds that carry you on waves of blissed-out pads. It adds up to an EP that feels steeped in ancient ritual as well as having one eye on the future.

Review: Berlin record label System Error's sub-label Fresh Tunez lays out the mission statement for its newest FRESH series with the vinyl debut of Parisian producer and DJ Paul Tellimerg with a fresh four-track EP. The opening track 'Alpha Synthesis' is a midtempo tech house groove that evokes the sound of his acid techno contemporaries like Manami's liquid 'Lizard Den'. The retro-futuristic progressions are dualistic on the two sides, Side A being the forward-thinking tech-raver counterpart to Side B's more retro-feeling tunes. 'Watchmen' has proven itself as a fan favourite, the industrial influence giving it a dark undertone that feels right at home in a dark club with its thumping technological rhythms. In stark contrast, 'Person to Person' is a more zany vocal number featuring some tongue-in-cheek percussion stings (think Dragon Ball Z aligned), the vocal itself being framed as The B-52's more reserved sibling.

Review: Sometime Sex Tags Mania and Bordello A Parigi regular Skatebard (real name Bard Aasen Lodemel) begins his third decade as a music producer in confident style on 'The Bells of Mist'. In its original form (B1), the track is an emotive, bittersweet treat, with the long-serving Norwegian smothering a (digital) cowbell-laden rhythm track and thickset, arpeggio-style bassline in melancholic chords. Noted Balearic house revivalist Phillip Lauer provides the remixes, first delivering a 'Flute Mix' built around a Robin S style bassline, crunchy '90s house beats and loved-up electronic motifs, before doffing a cap to Bobby Orlando, 'Behaviour'-era Pet Shop Boys and druggy Italo-disco on the moody 'Marshall Mix'. Round of an excellent package, Skatebard slows the pace down via a horizontal, slow-motion chugger entitled 'Favrer Flimrer'.

Review: For obvious reasons, Paranoid London tend not to say much about their popular 'Pledits', series, which see them rework, sample, combine and breathe new life into a variety of classic cuts. What we can say is that every single track in the series so far bangs hard and has been caned by DJs with taste. 'Music's Insane', the opening cut from their latest batch of reworks, is another weighty workout - a restless Chicago jack-attack blessed with moody pitched-down vocal snippets, 8-bit electronics and a mind-mangling bassline. On 'From The Back', they add reverb-laden vocal snippets to a hybrid beatbox electro/Chicago house beat, while 'Poignant Dexter' is a breathlessly energetic, drum-machine driven chunk of acid house/ghetto-house fusion that will ignite peak-time dancefloors.

Review: Since debuting a decade ago, Sleep D has refused to settle on one specific style or sub-genre, though in recent years the duo seems to have settled on a sound that prioritises hallucinatory, TB-303-driven sounds, weighty techno grooves and nods towards mid-90s ambient techno. These elements are much in evidence on the Australian outfit's latest EP, though there are also audible nods to neo-trance and the formative years of the psy-trance movement. They first join forces with Ivy Barkakati and Furious Frank on the constantly rising, mind-altering neo-trance throb of 'Border Control (Ahora Si)', before reaching for seriously trippy electronic motifs, creepy chords, metallic-sounding electronic bass and sturdy house beats on 'Post Pump'. Closing cut 'Bass'd in Berlin', meanwhile, immerses us in ambient electronics and mutilated choral samples before introducing a seriously pulsating, trance-style groove.

Review: The Cosmic Soup label did some mighty fine work in bringing Howard Dodd's work as Doc Bozique and Anoesis back into ear shot. Dodd released a fair clutch of wiggy, trance-inflected house and techno back in the wild old days of the mid-90s, and so it's no surprise to hear his music finding new relevance at a time when that sound is so warmly received on dancefloors all over the place. This release for German label Spray pulls together a few different bits from 1994, ranging from 'Heavy Water' and 'Diact' from The Anoesis EP to 'Trouble Down Groove' from Eight Day Music. Bringing the relevance with the current zeitgeist in no uncertain times, we're also treated to a remix courtesy of a scene leader in this field, D. Tiffany.

Review: The cuddly deepness just oozes out of these new jams by Nico Lahs right from the off. 'One More Time' has smooth edges, humid pads and frictionless drums with just the right amount of skip to keep you locked. Elsewhere there is a more jumbled percussive sound to 'Imagination', which has scruffy kicks and Detroit pads to keep you vibing. 'Shake Dat' then gets a little more rough and ready, basement style. The chords are still lush but the drums punchy that bit harder to get the party amping. Textbook and timeless stuff.

Review: Who doesn't love a bit of poppers, a silly head rush that is very briefly all consuming then gone in an instant. Well this artiss of the same name offers more lasting thrills with this fresh house EP. The titles are all tongue in cheek slights at some of dance music biggest apparent ills starting with streaming giants Spotify. It's a low slung and sleazy cut for early doors. 'Fuck RA' then brings raw retro drums and proto-house vibes, 'Fuck CDJS' is a tropical disco cut with steamy vocals and 'Fuck Social Media' is a sample of a commentator working an Argentina game and getting very excited about Lionel Messi.
