Review: Paranoid London's latest offering, the 'Pledits 5' EP, is a veritable sonic feast for the senses. The tracks feature a diverse array of samples, including very subtle snippets of vintage spoken-word recordings, woven together with a precision that could rival the accuracy of a humanoid electron microscope armed with a pin. Subterranean basslines, acid sloshes and rim-heavy drum rammings make up this three-track monster.

Music's Insane (6:58)
From The Back (7:46)
Poignant Dexter (6:07)
Review: For obvious reasons, Paranoid London tend not to say much about their popular 'Pledits', series, which see them rework, sample, combine and breathe new life into a variety of classic cuts. What we can say is that every single track in the series so far bangs hard and has been caned by DJs with taste. 'Music's Insane', the opening cut from their latest batch of reworks, is another weighty workout - a restless Chicago jack-attack blessed with moody pitched-down vocal snippets, 8-bit electronics and a mind-mangling bassline. On 'From The Back', they add reverb-laden vocal snippets to a hybrid beatbox electro/Chicago house beat, while 'Poignant Dexter' is a breathlessly energetic, drum-machine driven chunk of acid house/ghetto-house fusion that will ignite peak-time dancefloors.

Annihilate The World & Start All Over (8:18)

Linked In (with Paris Brightledge) (5:55)
Review: Previously, we'd have known exactly what to expect from a brand-new Paranoid London release: TB-303 driven acid house jack-tracks. Annihilate The World and Start Again, their first EP of fresh material since 2019, bucks this trend, setting aside their beloved acid lines in favour of a more mixed-up selection of hardware-heavy workouts. Check first the droning, mind-mangling bass, hypnotic techno beats and creepy chords of the excellent title track, before admiring the breathless, psychedelic techno-jack of 'External In'. Warmer and dreamier fare is provided via melodious electro number 'The State of That', before Detroit veteran Paris Brightledge adds a wonderfully emotive, almost melancholic vocal to analogue deep house-meets-Motor City techno cut 'Linked In'.

(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games (with Josh Caffe ) (7:23)
Review: When it comes to jackin' Chicago style acid house revivalism, few can hold a candle to Paranoid London. As this long-awaited second album proves, the duo is the undisputed masters of sweaty, TB-303 driven jack-tracks and - as recent single "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" and LP opener "Starting Fights" prove - classic-sounding vocal cuts that recall the glory years of Fingers, Inc in the mid-to-late 1980s. Interestingly, "PL" boasts far more collaborations than we've seen from Paranoid London before, including a string of ragged club cuts blessed with evocative spoken word vocals, a thrusting acid throb-job with lead vocals by Simon Topping and a suitably twisted, machine-driven hook up with Arthur Baker and Alan Vega (the raw and weighty "Angel Of Hell").

Review: Given their famously militant approach to music formats, it's a surprise to see Paranoid London's previously vinyl-only 2014 debut album finally being issued on CD. For those who missed out first time around, it's well worth checking. As you might expect, it makes great use of both vintage analogue equipment and similarly old skool influences, in turn doffing a cap to Phuture-style Chicago acid, Inner City, hip-house, Green Velvet, Dance Mania style ghetto-house, and stripped-back, dancefloor-friendly machine soul. Despite the ragged nature of some of the material, it's both hugely listenable and hangs together impressively - no mean feat given the DJ-friendly nature of the tracks. It all adds up to a retro-futurist treat.

Review: Paranoid London are named as such for a reason: the English megacity really does instill a low-level sense of paranoia and dread. So why the hell not lighten up now and again? That's just what this dubious duo have gone and done with 'Suck A Dick'; replacing their usual EP-cover representation of Big Ben with a giant phallus, Paranoid London have successfully drawn an astute analogy between masculine dominance and the totalitarian dominance of the state. Featuring the unmistakable vocals of regular collaborator Mutado Pintado, it's a guaranteed floor-filler, unusually humorous for the pair's austere, distorted repertoire.
