Bunker inaugurate the 4000 series with the first in a pair of strictly limited 12"s drawn from the tape archives of the unheralded, and now deceased, US producer Ellis De Havilland. As the title Born Out Of Cheapness And Frustration might suggest, De Havilland's story is a tragic one; born and raised in Gary, Indiana, a young Ellis viewed production as an escape from his rough family conditions, retreating to his local church every Friday to lay down some acid house experiments direct to tape. Taken by a heroin overdose in 1991 at the age of 23, De Havilland's productions never made it further than these tapes, until now. Discovered after being purchased at a police auction and handed to Bunker boss Guy Tavares, the six tracks here demonstrate a basic yet eminently rudimentary grasp of rough shod acid and banging techno which fits right in on Bunker, with the crunchy low end of "Cheap & Direct" standing out.
