Registering its impact, Jean-Yves Quesnel and colleagues immortalised the show into a recording, transforming Rocking Grass into Phono Grass.Sessions at College Edouard-Montpetit's studio captured the energy of a shifting musical landscape in Quebec; and pianist Benoit Sarrazin, unknowingly recorded mid-performance, later became a professional musician. Formed in 1973 by bassist Berthwel Maphumulo, Mac Mathunjwa on organ, Innocent Mathunjwa on drums, Joe Zikhali on guitar, Thema Maboneng was released in 1975, before being almost immediately forgotten. Review: Both of Joshua Abrams first two albums have been reissued this month, and this is the debut from 2010. At the time the artist said it was written with a view to countering "the commodification of time and the diminishing attention span that accompanies it by offering music with an irresistible groove, rooted in the sinuous rhythms of the human body and the full play of our senses." He sure pulled it off with elan across six tracks built around his own playing of the guimbri, a North African three-stringed bass lute. This is intoxicating, non linear avant-jazz that is utterly meditative.

Review: Made and released way back in 1958, Somethin' Else is a classic jazz album by the American alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, notably his only ever album for the esteemed Blue Note label. It famously hears Adderley enlist the help of trumpeter Miles Davis as one of its sidemen, and this was an ongoing relationship that later paved the way for popular jazz as a whole; without Somethin' Else, we wouldn't have Kind Of Blue, for which Adderley would contribute his sax playing just a year later. Though it is a testament to the unity of two great core musicians, we also hear the piano stylings of Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey.

Hola Adisa Farrar is a vocalist who hails from California via Jamaican roots, while Florian Pellissier brings though his Parisian jazz stronghold, and the pair lay down some unmissable Dingwalls-reminiscent gems. In fact, this is the perfect sort of album for those diggers looking for that perfect jazz-funk record, the one that slipped away; the drumming across all of the tracks is hypnotic but changes enough to retain that mysticism, the pianos glide over the melodies in a delicate but playful way, and Farrar's vocals are an utter beauty spilled all over the rhythm. A must have, and a warmly recommended album. Supported by Mukatsuku.

Review: First released in 1979 during the heyday of Brazil's jazz-funk movement, Antonio Adolfo's Viralata has long been considered an era-defining release by those who know. Given that original Brazilian copies are frustratingly hard to come by, this official reissue from Far Out Recordings - who previously worked with Adolfo on his 2007 set Destiny - should be an essential purchase for all those who dig Brazilian music. A little more jazz-focused than albums by contemporaries such as Azymuth, much of "Viralata" is slick, polished and incredibly well produced, with notable samba influences amongst the unashamed tributes to leading American artists. As you'd perhaps expect, the musicianship is astonishing.

Review: Following up 2021's acclaimed Vulture Prince, Pakistini American singer Arooj Aftab collaborates with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on synths to present a striking exercise in dramatic, atmospheric composition. Aftab's voice remains the centre of a creative groupthink which began in 2018, and here the musical ornamentation is turned down to a simmer, eschewing percussion in favour of ambient pastures. There's also space for Iyer and Ismaily to stretch out on their own, but ultimately this is Aftab's vehicle and her voice goes from strength to strength on this standout record.

Featuring bassist Guillermo Reuter, flautist Ruben Izarrualde and drummer Finn Sletten, La Rana blends South American rhythms with Norwegian landscapes and reflects Agustin's warmth, humility, and joyful connection to music and life and the title track is a standout that offers a unique rendition of Joao Donato's 'A Ra' from his 1973 album Quem E Quem.

He was joined by Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, and amongst his own compositions such as 'The Awakening' you can hear him tackling works from Herbie Hancock amongst others. Considering Jamal was already 20 years into his career by this point, the album has been hailed by critics for highlighting his evolution as a pianist, creating a more complex style without sacrificing delicacy and expression. It's a classic which is also loaded with hooks you might well have heard elsewhere on tracks from Nas and Common, to name but a few.

Review: Sea Horse is a live album by Japanese reed instrument master Akira Miyazawa, together with a later incarnation of his quarrelsome quartet. One of his later 80s works - recorded after his return to jazz following a hiatus in the 1970s - Sea Horse thoroughly blurs hard distinctions between 'live album' and 'studio album', as its reissuer Light In The Attic rightly notes that the listener can barely hear the presence of the audience in the recording - though it is there. A mixture of both standards and originals are heard here, and all are brought together by Miyazawa's masterful saxophone playing, not least for Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood', or Miyazawa's own, 'Baby Sea Horse'.

Review: First released back in 1967 on the Touche label and impossible to find on vinyl ever since, Happiness Is Taking Care of Business, Dig was the sole album from the short-lived Al Tanner Quintet. Yet as this much-needed Jazzman reissue proves, it remains an inspired selection of spiritually enriching modal workouts that makes the most of its talented ensemble. While pianist and bandleader Al Tanner naturally makes his presence felt throughout, flautist/trumpeter George Alexander and tenor saxophonist Roy Henderson also deliver inspired solos, while the rhythm section of drummer William 'Smiley' Winters and bassist Edgar Williams are also on fine form throughout.

Review: Contemporary jazz talent Melissa Aldana is back on the legendary BlueNote label with her second album here. Echoes Of The Inner Prophet is, says the great label, "a musical voyage to explore the depth of the spiritual journey" and has been co-produced by Aldana and Lage Lund. The tenor saxophonist is joined three by the talented Lund on guitar, as well as piano from Fabian Almazan, Kush Abadey on drums and Pablo Menares on bass. Review: For the first time, the soundtrack to Giuliano Carnimeo's 1974 erotic comedy film, La Signora Gioca Bene a Scopa? (released under the international title Poker In Bed), gets a vinyl release through BTF Italiy. Set in Parma, Italy, the film follows Michele, a penniless poker player, whose rock-bottom recourse, born of gambling debts, is to become a prostitute. Scored by Italian erotic film greats Gianfranco Plenizio and Alessandro Alessandroni - two virtuosi of great late 60s and early 70s eminence - we hear a teasing, undying vibe of irreverence here, with tempt-estuous vocals and pizzicato string tickles making light of the lurid relational meeting of minds and bodies that drives the film's action.

Review: Alfa Mist and Amika Quartet share a new ennead of never-heard-before tracks, alongside a few expansions on earlier releases: Recurring. An eternal return of saintly jazz and storytelling hip-hop, the record comes hot on the heels of Mist's recent Variables LP (2023) and the Manchester quartet's Amika's earlier 'Exist' release from earlier in 2024. The latter group have toured extensively with Alfa Mist in recent years, and the new live record notably foreruns its full release with a new exclusive, 'Checkpoint (Violence)', on which Mist not only drums, but at the same time MCs, with verve and flair. Here Mist concept-checks everything from modern-day apartheid to astrology (and exasperations thereof - "don't ask me your starsign"). Amika, meanwhile, embellish each mix with searing string arcos and long fibrous tugs, which seem, ironically, to assure us about the future, though they do lend the songs a demure mood: "don't fret".

Jenkins was fresh from the Revolutionary Ensemble and composed all pieces for this rare duet, which is now reissued on vinyl for the first time in nearly half a century. The deluxe set includes an unreleased session exploring standards, the sounds of Coltrane and some truly wild improvisations. A top treasure for jazz-heads.

As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. Laid down in a single session at the PJ studio, Groovin' Blue is a timeless and idiosyncratic experiment in jazz, its specialty being tss-tss rhythms, unhindered lead instrumental melisma, sax counterpoint, and smackout drum fills and solos from Butler, which more than transcended the strictures of the swing form of the time. Also hearing vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who was just 19 years old at the time of this recording, this excellent six-song set is perfect for those audiophiles keen on the interesting intersection of blues and jazz.

Review: You have a genuine piece of musical history here. The Anchors may not be remembered by many, but made a significant impact on everyone who does. Black Soul is the third and - to all musicologist knowledge - last record put out by this pioneering South African funk-soul outfit. Straight out of the Johannesburg township of Alexandria at the height of Apartheid, they became known for exceptional musicianship and reinterpreting the classic Memphis, USA sound for their own oppressed community. Part three of that legacy takes things much, much further, though. So, we can definitely still hear those Mid South sounds that represent the very essence of soul, but here the aesthetic becomes something altogether different, Afro and specific to time and place. Homage paid to the genre founders, but drawing on personal circumstances to own things for themselves.
