Review: Joe Bataan's 1968 sophomore album Riot! is considered a cornerstone of Latin soul and the record that truly cemented his reputation as the genre's king. Backed by the dynamic Latin Swingers band, Bataan masterfully blends Afro-Cuban rhythms, soul and funk with his signature streetwise flair. Tracks like 'It's a Good Feeling' and the title song capture the energy and emotion of late-1960s urban life while reflecting both personal and societal struggles. Its infectious grooves, raw vocal delivery and tight instrumentation mean that this one remains a timeless classic that continues to resonate across the generations.

Review: Bebo Valdes was born in Cuba but is now celebrated as a pioneer of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz all around the globe. A trained pianist, arranger and conductor, he collaborated with legends like Olga Guillot, Celia Cruz, Josephine Baker and Nat King Cole and a trip to Haiti in the 1940s sparked his interest in African-rooted rhythms, which he then incorporated into his music while performing at Havana's Tropicana cabaret. After surviving a near-fatal bomb explosion during a performance, he left Tropicana to find success on Cuban television before emigrating to Mexico and eventually Sweden. Bebo Valdes Y Su Gran Orquesta is a wonderful window into his colourful rhythms and lively sounds.

Review: Central, the "salsa band closest to the club scene" based in Tokyo, follows up former consecutive singles hits ('Samurai, 'Pastime Paradise') with the new full-length album in which they're housed, Flor De Roble. With a core primetime salsa cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' leading the charge, we've then a string of originals here, from 'Flor De 1.1 Rb.' and 'Samurai'. Also included are Carabali's 'Was I Surprised' and Crazy Ken Band's infamous soul masterpiece 'Towel', both again adorned in a bold salsa arrangement. An honorific 25th Anniversary album, though it is new.

Tail Ends (3:21)
Review: Tenalach, the latest EP from Chancha Via Circuito and El Buho, engages listeners in an enigmatic and atmospheric soundscape, blending organic and electronic elements. Following their earlier collaborations, this release takes them deeper into uncharted sonic territory, creating a vivid, almost otherworldly experience. With its mysterious tones, Tenalach feels like a soundtrack to an alternate realityiimagine a journey through Latin American jungles and mountains, as if guided by the spirits of nature. The opener 'El Samurai' stays closest to the duo's signature folktronic sound, blending cowbells, violin-like synths, and animalistic rhythms. 'Sapo Cururu' introduces an intriguing mix of croaking frogs and driving snares, pushing genre boundaries with its primal energy. 'Oropendola' lifts with its strobing synths and the delicate flutter of birds, creating a dreamlike, airy atmosphere. Meanwhile, 'Sumay' delivers a powerful blend of epic synth lines and Chancha's hallmark percussion, evoking both majesty and melancholy. While the EP pulses with life, it's neither downtempo nor uptempoiexisting in a space that defies easy categorisation. Reflecting a more introspective and darker edge, Tenalach captures a subtle tension, hinting at the duo's contemplation of a rapidly changing world and the blurred lines between human and nature. A truly unique listen.

For this one, Colon and Lavoe were joined by renowned cuatro player Yomo Toro and legendary percussionists Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual Jr. Together, they crafted salsa versions of beloved Puerto Rican Christmas songs while mixing traditional musica jibara with Cuban guaguanco, son montuno and African-American jazz. It delivers on all fronts with vibrant, festive blends that bring real Puerto Rican authenticity to salsa fans worldwide.

Dimelo (Busy Twist remix) (3:25)
Review: Blending hi-NRG and Latin cumbia, Combo Chimbita present a brand new single for Wonderwheel Recordings, 'Dimelo'. Described as an internal dialogue - a sonic representation of what it feels and sounds like to choose yourself - the refrain "Cuando por fin yo me elegi" is heard repeatedly throughout the track, as self-selection is maximised, contra the impossibility of saving others before oneself. The band's Carolina Oliveros says of the song, "however much you love someone, you can't force them to love yourself in the same way - that is love you have to give yourself." The Busy Twist remixes the idea, self-caring through salvos of oily guitar and toe-tapping woodblock shot, hitting like a health kick.

Review: This reissue brings an essential piece of Latin music history back to life. The album crackles with energy, blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with an electrifying brass section and masterful percussion. Upbeat guaracha mambo, driving son montuno and cha-cha-cha grooves create an infectious momentum, while the arrangements from legends like Tito Puente, Charlie Palmieri and Louie Ramirez ensure every track is dynamic and meticulously crafted. The opener is a self-affirming explosion of rhythm, setting the tone for a collection that seamlessly balances joyful exuberance with poignant storytelling. Tracks like the rapid-fire guaracha about the struggles of rebuilding life as an immigrant add depth, while lighthearted guajira melodies and a playful cha-cha-cha about space travel showcase remarkable versatility. Despite its initial modest success, this record was a foundational moment, paving the way for an illustrious career that would define and elevate salsa worldwide. The remastering from the original analogue tapes ensures a rich listening experience. Nearly six decades later, its impact and brilliance remain undeniable.

Review: A tremendous cache of tunes by Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco, two art-nouveau dandies of the Latin salsa and gurachas sound, the latter of which has remained the dominant form of music in Cuba since at least the late 18th Century. The 20th, of course, heard a dramatic reworking of the sound into big band swing, as it would soon be taken up by many a Latin American cojunto (small band/ensemble). Cruz broke into international stardom from 1950, but would not venture beyond the gulf to with Dominican counterpart Johnny Pacheco until 1974, and Tremendo Cache was not their first collaboration either. With right-foot-forward steps and picaresque rufflings, the pair deliver a latently sombre record, despite the snappy energy, with some of the remastered cuts including 'Don't Talk To Me About Love' and 'I Can't Stand It Any More' laying among the more acerbic of titles!

Review: La Sonora Mazuren, a vibrant force in Bogota's indie-tropical scene, infuses classic South American rhythms with a modern twist. Drawing on cumbia, chicha, guaracha, and champeta from Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, the band skillfully merges traditional sounds with synthesisers and electric guitars. Their approach, guided by early innovators like Polibio Mayorga and Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers, creates a psychedelic and forward-thinking blend reminiscent of Tropicalia's golden era. Their latest release, Magnetismo Animal, continues this innovative path. Recorded partly in rural Normandy during a European tour and finished in Bogota, the album explores the concept of animal magnetism as introduced by Franz Mesmer. Each track channels a shared trance-like energy through intricate rhythms and sound experiments. Drawing inspiration from Colombian gaita, vallenato, and cumbia, alongside Peruvian huayno and chicha, the album presents a futuristic take on Afro-Andean traditions with pulsating polyrhythms and psychedelic textures. Featuring members of Romperayo and LA PERLA, La Sonora Mazuren exemplifies Bogota's dynamic new tropical movement, merging past and present in a unique musical journey.

Review: Lagartijeando is a key figure in the alt-Latin electronic scene alongside the likes of Nicola Cruz and Chancha Via Circuito. He makes an essential return here with 7 Caminos, a fourth career long player with Wonderwheel. Recorded between Cholula, Mexico and Tarapoto in Peru, it transports you in double quick time to the South American jungle and Mexican Altiplano volcanoes. Sunny melodies take flight over shuffling rhythms, dubby basslines unfurl like flowers at dawn and intimate vocal whispers bring a human touch to the rhythms. A gorgeous soundtrack to a perfect afternoon of escapism.

Review: Mati Zundel aka. Lagartijeando has been releasing cumbia-esque, Andean influenced dance music since 2010, though it's only in more recent years that the artist has rerouted his craft to LPs, of which this latest record is the fourth. With "camino" translating from Spanish to mean "path" or "way" - the word often carries a spiritual meaning - Zundel here aims to emphasise the many sprouting, vicissitudinous paths down which life may thrust us, despite the ever-present illusion of choice. After moving to Chula, Mexico, the artist drew inspiration from the landscapes and cultures of the northern tip of Latin America, reflecting local intrigues and mountainous mysteries. Armed with regional instruments, such as Andean winds and charango, Lagartijeando produces such danceable dazzlements as 'Cholula' and 'Que Lindo Sale La Luna', which stand out as the most heated songs here, their stylistic range offering a sense of the many choices that remain open to us.

Review: This forthcoming 7" pairs two fiery cuts from the Latin American underground, capturing the raw energy of a transformative musical era. Los Pambele's 'Cannabis' layers cumbia rhythms with swirling, reverb-soaked guitars, creating a trance-inducing groove that feels both earthy and psychedelic. On the flip, Los Darlings de Huanuco's 'Marihuana' cranks up the intensity, delivering a garage-tinged anthem brimming with jagged riffs and spirited vocals. The sound is unpolished yet electrifying, a snapshot of a time when regional traditions collided with bold experimentation, leaving behind something truly timeless.

Rooted in a musical epicentre renowned for gaita, cumbia, bullerengue, son palenque, son de negro and accordion styles like porros and pajaritos, the initiative celebrates and preserves the region's rich folkloric life. This album documents festive gatherings, knowledge exchange and co-creation inspired by composer Andres Narvaez, a social leader and land-rights activist. Review: The Pambele band's debut album blends Afro-Colombian influences taken from their shared heritage with the vivid sounds of 60s psychedelic rock. It's a work rich in "Caribbean creolisation" with traditional Colombian percussion, joyful, rhythmic vocals and intricate guitar melodies all underpinned with wild organ tones. This powerful cross-fertilisation creates a transatlantic but also distinctly Caribbean sound that draws you into a world of exuberant musical atmosphere. The tunes often get you into a trance-like state while combining raw improvisation and dancey rhythms. It's an authentic escape to a very distant part of the world but one with a universal sense of rhythm that cannot be escaped.

Review: Ray & His Court's self titled album is a masterclass in Latin funk by Ray Fernandez, a key figure in Miami's Cuban music scene. Originally released in 1973 on Sound Triangle Records, the album blends salsa, funk, soul, calypso and Afro-Cuban rhythms and is a real family affair that features Ray's wife, sons and top musicians like Rickey Washington, who is the father of the revered jazz cat Kamasi Washington. Side A boasts irresistible Latin tracks like 'La SeNorita Lola' and 'Lo Sabia' while Side B heats up with Miami funk including the DJ favourite 'Cookie Crumbs' and the standout instrumental 'Soul Freedom' to make for a magnetic fusion of Afro-Cuban energy and Miami groove.

Muchacho Barrigon (2:43)
Review: This 7" reissue brings together two scorching salsa gems from the early 70s, showcasing the vibrant energy and infectious rhythms of Ray Perez, aka "El Loco". Perez, a true innovator and iconoclast, is a revered figure in the Latin music scene, his influence spanning decades and continents. These two tracks, originally released in Venezuela, capture the essence of his sound, a fusion of Cuban influences, New York salsa, and Venezuelan flair. 'Muchacho Barrigon', a dancefloor filler that transcended borders, is a testament to Perez's ability to craft irresistible grooves. Its pairing with the equally infectious 'Guaguanco Del Adios' makes this 7" a must-have for any salsa enthusiast or DJ seeking to ignite the dancefloor.

Susobrino & Jatun Mama - "El Canto De Los Sapos" (3:27)
Susobrino & Lander Gyselinck - "Bolivia" (3:10)
Review: Belgian-Bolivian musician Susobrino delivers his debut EP 'NO', titling itself after a primal negation, and forged in the interplay of traditional South American percussion music with electronica. As if to curb his habit of collecting an (perhaps over-) abundance of percussion instruments, 'NO' hears Susobrino set a stark limit for both himself and the listener, bringing just three curt tracks to wax following a live-changing tour of his ancestral South America. Honorific of the traditions of SA percussive music, Susobrino nonetheless intones: "Mixing acoustic instruments and field recordings with electronics with the music software Ableton was my cocktail from the beginning". The result is a widescreen demo of ascendant percy jawns, equally suited for the curio club-goer as it is for the Bolivian folklorico fanatic.

Susobrino & DJ Fucci - "Esquites"
Review: Pro Latin percussionist come dance music producer Susobrino has set about releasing his forthcoming record BRI in three parts, the third and final of which you hear here. This fulfilment of a triptych delivers three collaborations with three fellow amazing artists - Silvio Astier, Entranas and DJ Fucci - all of whom knock out each rhythm, bending it to a taut, convected degree we didn't know was possible. So to all the chin-strokers out there: if you think dance music isn't dance music unless it stays rooted to the ones and threes, you're wrong! Building on Tumacoan, Ecuadorian and Bolivian rhythms, Susobrino commandeers three further, most masterfully freehanded rhythmic frolics, the best of which has to be the bird-call imitating, gourd-slapping 'Esquites'.

With a mix of heartfelt renditions of classic Christmas songs, this album evokes both warmth and nostalgia while infusing the music with a touch of melancholy. Thalia's emotive voice brings a unique depth to each track and captures the vibes of the holiday season with a blend of joy, longing and reflection. The album features a range of instruments and arrangements from orchestral strings to Latin rhythms which make it a rich and beautiful listening experience.

Review: Analogue Africa's latest deep dive into the forgotten corners of global music culture shines a light on Mexico's 'pirata' (bootleg) compilations of the early 1980s - sets that contained edited, pitched down and distorted versions of genuine dancefloor hits from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and other central and South American countries. The compilations themselves were, of course, highly illegal, came with very strange covers, and - because of the in-demand nature of the music on offer - sold well. It's a great collection of trippy tropical music all told, with the accompanying booklet - written by a local specialist in 'pirata' musical culture - doing a great job of providing background information and showcasing the movement's strong link with Mexico's soundsystem-powered 'dance-party' scene of the turn of the 80s.

Review: Global groove trotters and world renowned compilers Analog Africa are back with another gem for your collection, this time looking deep into the sounds of the golden age of Mexico City's mobile soundsystems. Super Disco Pirata - De Tepito Para El Mundo 1965-1980" is a musical adventure with no fewer than 23 red hot jams of topical greatness all ready to get asses shaking and floors full. They have been taken from "the finest and strangest pirata LPs" and they all shine bright from Enrique Lynch's bright and brassy 'La Quinta Sinfonia De Beethoven' to Gabriel Meza Y Su Organo Chevere's 'La Luna Y El Pescador' with its rather haunting organ melodies and shuffling samba rhythms. A real treat for world music lovers.

Review: These two vinyl records house the vibrant legacy of the boogaloo movement in Peru from 1966 to 1975, showcasing 22 tracks by 17 different artists who recorded on the renowned Peruvian label MAG. Featuring standout songs by Tito Chicoma, Melcochita, Los Kintos, Otto Rojas, and Coco Lagos, among others, the collection invites a new generation to dance to these timeless grooves. While MAG was known for releasing various music styles, its focus on tropical sounds has become a favorite for DJs and collectors. The mid-60s saw Peru develop a thriving boogaloo scene, inspired by the genre's New York origins where songs like 'Bang Bang' and 'El Pito' blended Latin rhythms with soul and funk. Although boogaloo's popularity waned in New York toward the end of the 60s, it continued to thrive in Peru even as salsa music eventually took over. With this compilation, the energy of that era comes alive again, highlighting the lasting influence of boogaloo on Peruvian music and inviting listeners to rediscover these lost dancefloor gems.
