Review: Madrid's Oli Stewart, better known as Casbah 73, swaps out the solo edits for something far more expansive: The Jade, a live ensemble built around raw musicianship and emotional honesty. Across 12 tracks, the group channel a hybrid of Iberian funk, Afro-Latin soul and sun-dappled jazz, delivered with sweat, subtlety and swing. 'Let The Light In' opens in full voice, driven by Josh Hoyer's gutsy performance and gospel lifts from Nia Martin and Deborah Ayo. From there, the set shifts between styles with ease: the punchy Brit-funk snap of 'Change!', the lush, floating soul-jazz of 'On That Strange', and the winding disco-dub psychedelia of 'Space Lines'. 'When Love Left' stands out for its stripped-down intensity, while the Brazilian shuffle of 'Si No Me Quieres Esperar', featuring Ale Gutierrez, adds a flash of saudade. Instrumentals like 'At The Queensboro' and 'Nos Vamos A Encontrar' let the players stretch out with elegance. It's an album of grooves, but also of feeling-a rare balance of tight ensemble playing and expressive fire.

Review: Durand Jones & The Indications, a soulful trio hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, have quietly honed their craft over the last decade. What began in the basement of Indiana University in 2012 has evolved into a global phenomenon, with Durand Jones (vocals), Aaron Frazer (drums/vocals) and Blake Rhein (guitar) leading the charge. Rooted in gritty funk and soulful disco, the band's early sound was shaped by a raw, analog approachirecorded on a Tascam four-track tape machine, capturing an unpolished energy that has remained central to their appeal. While their music has grown more sophisticated with time, that authenticity and collaborative spirit still runs deep. Their connection, both as musicians and friends, is the foundation of their success. The trio's latest work speaks to their maturation, both personally and professionally. It's a celebration of what they've learned, of coming full circle and of embracing the complexity of life, love and growth. Each member's solo projectsiJones's 2023 debut, Frazer's 2024 follow-up, and Rhein's work as Patchwork Inc.ihave expanded their creative range, but together, they remain a force, distilling their diverse influences into something undeniably their own. With a sound that continues to evolve, Durand Jones & The Indications have struck a balance between the personal and the universal, producing music that resonates across cultures and generations. Their live shows, now spanning continents, highlight the unbroken rapport with their fans as they maintain the visceral intensity of their nascent basement sessions.

Review: Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein return with Flowers, their fourth album, revisiting the same raw, budding energy that first plotted them together in a Bloomington basement. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Review: American organist Charles Kynard's 1972 session for Mainstream Records is reissued here with remastered audio and its original gatefold artwork. Recorded in Los Angeles with a core group of seasoned session players i including Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphrey and Arthur Adams i the nine tracks centre on groove-based jazz-funk anchored by Kynard's Hammond lines. 'Little Ghetto Boy' opens with slow phrasing and a blues-inflected feel. 'Hot Sauce' and 'Lime Twig' push into tighter rhythm section interplay, driven by Fender bass and clipped guitar. 'Slop Jar' and 'Rock Steady' lean heavier into funk structures, while 'Name The Missing Word' brings in sharper horn charts. 'The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face)' and 'Shout' stretch the dynamic range, the former subdued and the latter more direct. Bonus track 'Smiling Faces Sometimes', featuring Carol Kaye on bass, closes the set with a looser swing and more open arrangement. Nothing here feels overplayed i the focus remains on tone and ensemble feel. It's a clean, unfussy reissue of a record that prioritises groove over soloing, now restored with clarity but no added polish.

Amebo (4:02)
Life's Gone Down Low (4:55)
Cashing In (6:01)
Bobby (4:27)
Lord Have Mercy (7:09)
Review: Originally released in 1976, this landmark outing from Nigeria's Lijadu Sisters marked their first major international push i a radical soul-funk statement laced with political edge. Opening with the bass-heavy swagger of 'Danger', it immediately sets the tone: sharp vocals, warm analogue grit, and tight, hypnotic percussion from a mix of trap drums and traditional Yoruba rhythms. 'Amebo' carries sly social commentary over organ stabs and polyrhythms, while 'Life's Gone Down Low' fuses soul's gospel cadences with simmering Afrobeat grooves i the same track that would later be sampled by Nas. But it's 'Cashing In' that cuts deepest: an indictment of exploitation and capitalist decay wrapped in funk guitar and layered harmony. Producer Biddy Wright's fingerprints are everywhere i from the soft hand percussion to the open mixdown that lets the sisters' vocals soar and slide in perfect unison. This reissue makes clear how far ahead of their time they were, offering an Afro-psychedelic protest record that still rings out with clarity.

Review: The Lijadu Sisters were a Nigerian duo - not just sisters in actual fact, but identical twins - known for sharp vocal harmonies and socially conscious funk. This reissue of their 1976 debut international release captures them at their most fearless, a striking fusion of Afrobeat, soul and reggae, anchored by Biddy Wright's tight, uncluttered production. Opener 'Danger' rides a deep bassline and sparse horns, setting the tone for the rest of the record - defiant, minimal and incredibly catchy. 'Cashing In' doesn't hold back, a pointed anthem critiquing corruption and exploitation, while 'Life's Gone Down Low' swings with bitter melancholy, later sampled by Nas for its raw rhythmic pull. On 'Amebo', the groove is more playful, contrasting with the slow-burning, meditative mood of 'Lord Have Mercy'. Wright, who played most of the instruments himself, leaves ample room for Taiwo and Kehinde Lijadu to soar; their harmonies curl around each phrase in perfect, eerie unison. Recorded in Lagos and backed by a crew of local musicians, it's a vibrant, enduring document of one of Nigeria's most distinctive musical voices. Nearly 50 years on, it remains as politically relevant and musically agile as ever.

Review: Canadian-born, LA-based artist Mocky brings a disarmingly human touch to his first release for Stones Throw, a project centred on the richness of the voice as a communal instrument. Built with close friends gathered in his garage, the album resists digital sterility in favour of warmth and grain, with layered harmonies, live instrumentation and tape-recorded charm capturing something deeply analogue and alive. 'Infinite Vibrations' and 'Just A Little Lovin' balance gospel warmth with minimalist groove, while 'Wiggle Room' and 'Choir Beat' lean into playful vocal percussion. There's a through-line of intimacyitracks like 'Walking (Theme)' and '1000 Goodbyes' carry a sketch-like immediacy, like overheard ideas mid-bloom. Somewhere between soul, choral experiment and soft psych, this record feels like a family room jam reimagined as quiet protest against digital alienation. A celebration of imperfections, of singing together, and of sound as something tactile, felt, and free.

Review: Austin-based producer Adrian Quesada returns with the second volume of his Boleros Psicodelicos project, deepening his exploration of psychedelic Latin balladry with a widescreen, collaborative approach. The new release pulls together artists from across the Americas, from Cuco's hazy vocal textures on opener 'Ojos Secos' to the bright clarity of 'No Juego' with Angelica Garcia. 'Bravo' with iLe leans into rich, orchestral melancholy, while 'Primos', with the ever-slick Hermanos Gutierrez, sways with instrumental elegance. 'Afuera' and 'Agonia' bring flourishes of folk and soul, respectively, and 'No Temere' with Dayme Arocena closes the record with gospel-like resolve. Where the first volume was rooted in vintage tones, here Quesada and co-producer Alex Goose push things into more expansive territoryistill analogue-heavy but layered with synths, strings and plenty of open space. It's a fresh release that balances reverence with reinvention, reaffirming Quesada's role as a sharp, deeply musical connector of eras and scenes.

Review: This album is one that is always going to be reissued until the end of time. It's pure, raw, inescapably good soul music that was popularised in recent years by Floating Points and his Melodies International label. The 1976 debut album by Chicago soul, rare-groove and jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People was led by the Burton Brothers. This reissue comes on red vinyl for the first time and is full of a dynamic blend of styles-from the sax-driven disco-funk of 'Let's Get Down With The Beat' to the doo-wop-tinged 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' and the fiery 'Hurt Perversion'. The 20-minute title track, Open Soul, is a mesmerising space-soul journey which kicks off this highly sought after gem in style.

Review: Earth, Wind & Fire's debut album is a masterstroke of 70s soul and spiritual funk, recorded during the band's creative peak and released in 1975 as both a studio LP and soundtrack to the film of the same name, about a record exec whose white-only signing policies get the worst of a young black musician. Maurice White and Charles Stepney's production fused gospel uplift with jazz inflection, ungrounding cosmic themes in airtight arrangements and vocal interplay. The album opens with 'Shining Star', a swaggering, horn-charged affirmation that became their first US number one, winding through slow-burning ballads ('Reasons', 'All About Love'), celebratory grooves ('Happy Feelin', 'Africano') and expansive epics ('See The Light').

Review: The New Jersey group's fourth studio album marked a turning point: a dazzling fusion of streetwise funk and glossy r&b that would catapult Kool & The Gang into mainstream orbit. Across its eight tracks, the band strike a delicate balance-tight horn stabs and party-starting rhythms balanced by lush keys, jazzy bridges and the occasional philosophical curveball. 'Jungle Boogie' is the clear standout, a brash, swaggering anthem with wah-wah guitars and primal chants, while 'Hollywood Swinging' adds a slick sense of strut. 'Funky Stuff', too, bristles with raw energy-half percussion workout, half brass-led call to action. But the deeper cuts ('Heaven at Once', 'Wild and Peaceful') show they were never just party-starters. This is music built for block parties, dancefloors and smoke-filled basements alike-rough, joyful and utterly alive.

Review: Indianapolis' Rhythm Machine released their sole self-titled album in 1976, marking a rare bridge between late 60s and mid-70s funk eras. Formed by bassist James Boone and guitarist James Brantley from the ashes of cult group The Highlighters, the band delivered a blend of tight, soulful grooves, dynamic horn lines, and a fluid jazz digest. Its vibe flirts with Earth, Wind & Fire's elementalism, but drifts into looser, cosmic territories away from terrestriality, where dreamy synths and shimmering guitars float atop liquefied production. A soprano sax cuts through with a sharp edge: originally a tough find, this reissue from Now Again revives a funky, soulful journey ripe for chill late-night bar spins or for collectors seeking overlooked classiques.

Review: A pillar of 70s jazz-funk and soul, this landmark release from Los Angeles artist Roy Ayers still sounds impossibly fresh. Originally released in 1976, it marked a shift towards more mellow, groove-based songwritinga and remains one of the most influential entries in Ayers' vast discography. He centres the vibraphone across ten tracks, using it as both melodic guide and percussive spirit. 'Hey, Uh-What You Say Come On' sets out the blueprint with radiant optimism, followed by the smoky bounce of 'The Golden Rod' and 'Keep On Walking'. 'You And Me My Love' and 'The Third Eye' stretch into dreamier territory, while 'It Ain't Your Sign (It's Your Mind)' and 'People And The World' inject a sharper social commentary. 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' itself is a peak momentihazy, minimal, instantly transportive. Then comes the more eccentric double close of 'Tongue Power' and 'Lonesome Cowboy', where Ayers' soulful surrealism glows brightest.

Review: Wayne Shorter's Native Dancer stands as one of his most essential and adventurous works of the 1970s. Blending Brazilian rhythms with lyrical jazz-fusion, the album featured legendary collaborators like Herbie Hancock on keys and Brazilian icon Milton Nascimento, whose vocals and songwriting elevate the album's lush and emotional palette. Tracks like 'Ponta de Areia' and 'From the Lonely Afternoons' radiate warmth, while Shorter's own 'Ana Maria' and 'Beauty and the Beast' showcase his compositional brilliance. With Airto Moreira on percussion, Native Dancer is a transcendent, melodic gem and both a celebration of cultural fusion and a cornerstone of Shorter's expansive catalogue.

Review: Adam Wise, you may know, is Fabulous Lover and this new record marks his first for Pete Herbert's Music for Swimming Pools. It's a mature mix of 80s-inspired Balearic electro-funk with a tropical twist straight from his Bali studio. This sun-soaked collection bridges sunset vibes and dancefloor energy with 'It's Lonely At The Top' a funky opener with a squelchy bassline and playful riffs. 'Elevate' douses you in 80s synth sounds that glow warm, and label head remixes into a more buoyant Balearic house beat. Elsewhere is the gentle swagger of 'Low Bounce' and lush synth disco buzz of 'Automatic.' Feel-good grooves, for sure.
