Review: Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist and much loved Chicago entertainer Kurt Elling has got a second album on the way soon - SuperBue arrives in Autumn - and has been building anticipation for it with a number of singles from it. This superb six track EP features special guest drummer Nate Smith as well as guitarist Charlie Hunter and has as classic feel that combines Eling's unique charisma and energy with his musical showmanship. All of the tunes are covers with a particularly fresh new version of Al Jarreau's 'Boogie Down' full of playfulness. This is another release that proves why Elling is so well regarded.

Flamboyant Move (Naughty NMX & Marc Hype reflip) (3:31)
I Don't Understand Love (Naughty NMX & Marc Hype reflip) (4:36)
Review: More hot-to-trot edit goodness from Dusty Donuts, a seven-inch series aimed firmly at DJs who spin breakbeat-driven funk, soul and disco. These two "re-flips" are the work of Marc Hype and Naughty NMX, two hip-hop loving Berlin veterans who can trace their careers back to the turn of the '90s. On the A-side you'll find "Flamboyant Move", a swirling, string-laden chunk of disco-era soul goodness toughened up with the addition of fat new hip-hop beats, contemporary rap samples and some carefully placed dub delays. They push the envelope further on side B, utilizing string-laden chunks of a soaring disco-soul classic in a loved-up, head-nodding hip-hop workout that should appeal to all those who like their beats served with a big dollop of celebratory, peak-time flavour.

Luchito - "Broasted Or Toasted?" (2:15)
Luchito - "Hey! Guajira Baby" (3:12)
Nestor Alvarez - "Bang The Bongo" (2:51)
Nestor Alvarez - "Lupita" (3:07)
Review: London-based funk-mongers Original Gravity serve up some serious Latin heat from the mighty Luchito and Nestor Alvarez. Both artists were last on the label earlier this year for the Latin Fever Vol. 2 single, and now they're back with more life-affirming bursts of funk. Luchito takes up the A side with two tracks - 'Broasted Or Toasted' is a cool-as-you-like bit of jazzy beatdown with some sweet flute, while 'Hey Guajira Baby' is a singalong anthem rendered in the sweetest salsa tones. Alvarez is on the flip with the pattering bongo magic of 'Bang The Bongo Side' and the heavy groove of 'Lupita', which sounds like it's packed with deadly breaks for those who still like a little crate digging.

Luchito - "So Long" (2:55)
Luchito - "My Baby Likes To Boogaloo" (3:05)
Nestor Alvarez - "Arroz Con Frijoles" (2:55)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Relojero" (2:52)
Review: Following up their first edition of the comp, Original Gravity Records here offer up the second instalment of the Latin Fever series, charting the talents of many underappreciated Cuban artists - or at least, so it seems. In reality, the artists 'Luchito' and 'Nestor Alvarez' don't exist; they're deft fabrications of personality, envisaged by OG label boss Neil Anderson, who aims for a pitch-perfect emulation of Cuban salsa music and fusion. In gathering every instrument, musician and lo-fi aspect of production, it's a feat he impressively achieves: Luchito's two tracks are both move-on-up Latin heaters (listen closely, and you'll realise they're perfectly on-grid for club play). The Alvarez tunes are no less energetic, although the B-side closer 'El Relojero' is a particularly cool slower jam, with blue noted Hammond organs and trumpets nailing a rumbling rumba.

Luchito & Nestor - "Good Lovin'" (part 2) (2:36)
Nestor Alvarez - "La Gordita Americana" (3:09)
Nestor Alvarez - "Ixo's Taxi" (2:36)
Review: Latin Fever Vol. 3 offers a vibrant collection of tracks from Luchito & Nestor, as well as solo efforts by Nestor Alvarez (a.k.a. Neil Anderson). Luchito & Nestor's rendition of The Olympics' 'Good Lovin' kicks things off with a blistering Latin boogaloo twist, featuring infectious rhythms and lively brass. The instrumental Part 2 replaces lead vocals with a dynamic flute topline, adding a fresh layer to the classic hit. On the flip side, Nestor Alvarez's 'La Gordita Americana' is an uptempo boogaloo groover led by horns and piano, delivering an energetic and danceable vibe. The collection concludes with 'Ixo's Taxi,' a skeletal xylophone-led funk track that brings a unique, nostalgic charm. Each track on this release has a rich blend of Latin rhythms and boogaloo energy, making this an exciting 7" to hit the dancefloor to.

Say You Love Me Girl (Mad Black remix) (4:26)
Review: Mad Black Latin Combo featuring Nick Kurusawa brings a delightful single with Say You Love Me Girl, released on Diguma Doughnuts from Japan. This 7" gem merges many styles and influences into one. On Side-1, 'Say You Love Me Girl' showcases a smooth and soulful blend of styles, highlighted by powerful vocal performance. It's a track that effortlessly bridges different musical influences, creating an engaging and catchy pop hit. Underneath it all, you have funk, salsa and disco all blending into a classy gem. Side-2 offers 'Say You Love Me Girl' (Mad Black Remix), which takes a more atmospheric and melodic approach. This remix transforms the track into a chilled-out, laid-back version, providing a fresh and relaxing alternative. This release combines energetic vibes with a smooth, sophisticated twist.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to churn out top-quality re-edits and here they enlist Danny Krivit aka. Mr. K, the New York producer who has longstandingly helped prop up the dance scene there since the early 1960s. Krivit is responsible for perhaps some of the earliest and most significant disco and funk edits on Earth, so we're more than happy to hear these new ones out, in which he lends his ear to two mambi from Latin extraordinaires Sabu Martinez and Nico Gomez. Percussive clanks and boxy slaps abound on this audiophiles' charm.

Boogie Oogie (Young Pulse remix) (4:22)
Review: Jay Murphy - Franco-American musician, producer and singer based in Paris - and South African singer songwrite Natalie Nova join forces to give a fresh spin to a classic, reinterpreting a well-loved track with their own unique flair. The original mix oozes with jazz-funk vibes, where Murphy's smooth keyboard work and Nova's soulful vocals combine effortlessly, adding new depth and energy to the timeless track. The groove is rich and inviting, pulling you into its rhythmic charm while still honouring the essence of the original. On the remix, Young Pulse brings his signature style, turning the track into a soulful, funky journey with added layers of warmth and groove. His touch injects an extra dose of funk, transforming it into an irresistible dancefloor-ready tune.

Boogie Oogie (Rob Hardt Boogie remix) (4:31)
Boogie Oogie (Young Pulse remix) (4:18)
Review: Primetime Paris producer Jay Murphy first teamed up with Natalie Nova in 2022 to release 'Boogie Oogie', a rejig of the classic A Taste Of Honey song. Emphasising postmodernity, we hear a timeless club classic liquefied for a fluid psychic economy: Murphy, a Franco-American musician based in Paris, produces, sings and key-plays over this funky opus, attesting his involvement in the funk scene since as far back as the early 1990s. But now Rob Hardt and Young Pulse bring their own versions, spanning slapping, chime-trilling propulsions, and a wildout inductive monologue from an anonymous contributing vocalist: "if you think you're too cool to boogie, boy have I got news for you... I wanna see you shake your derriere..."

Promised Land (3:16)
Promised Land (dub version) (3:09)
Review: A repro of the much in-demand Flames cut first made by the Nairobi Sisters in 1974, 'Promised Land'. Infamously sampled by Q-Tip for 'Whateva Will Be' as well as on a range of earlier 90s boom-bap era productions, it is not at all hard to figure out why it's a coveted record. The Nairobi Sisters were singers Terrie Nairobi and Judy Mowatt, and 'Promised Land' was first recorded with the band The Gaytones, under license to the Gay Feet label. Later cut to Winston Jones' Flames Records, the track and its dub version came to define the Brooklyn reggae scene, owing to the enduring interest it commands today.

Review: In 1984, Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams gifted the British jazz-funk scene with two exceptional 12" records, both now rare gems. One of these, Nat King Cool's 'Checking Out,' showcases a fusion of MFSB's 'Mysteries of the World' with quintessential UK Brit-funk vibes. Originally released on the Tai Wan label, this single remains as fresh today as it did in 1984, with its captivating flip-side instrumental. Remastered from tapes, these essential 80s Brit-funk tracks are presented on pristine vinyl, adorned with bespoke repro-labels, and packaged in a groovy Soul Jazz/Funk Masters house bag, which means it looks as good as it sounds.

Review: Bristol's tireless and relentless Boca 45 has been turning out all manner of funky b-boy breaks for many years. He's done various albums and countless 7"s and always finds new room whenever he steps out. He kicks off this latest one with an edit of 'Freed From Desire' that has rolling drums, a re-sung vocal that has plenty of passion and some mellow guitar riffs all working it into something fresh. On the backside is the more raw and hard-hitting 'Suki's Revenge' (part 2 - extended mix) which will twist any dance floor.

Review: Nautilus are a supremely talented jazz funk group from Japan who channel their devotion to all manner of rare grooves into some utterly exquisite tunes. They released their debut album in 2015 on Palette Sounds, and now one of the lead singles has been repressed for the heads. It comprises two cover versions - one of Bob James' 'Nautilus' and the other of Roy Ayers' 'We Live In Brooklyn Baby'. Both cuts stay true to the original masterpieces while letting the players gifts shine through in understated ways. Nautical Table (4:09)
Review: Japanese rare groove merchants Nautilus are back in the wake of their Reconnection album with a new 7" of sweet and smooth jazz funk in their signature style. There's an endlessly crisp quality to the playing and production on Nautilus records which ensures they land with maximum effect. The A side on this new single is 'We Gettin Down', a bright and breezy confection with some choice talk box action, Rhodes and synths in conversation and sprightly beats. 'Nautical Table' gets a little craftier, dealing in skittering drums and nimble piano without losing that clarity we've come to expect from this highly talented group.

Review: Some classic covers of vintage gems here, as Nautilus offer up a new pressing of their 2017 single featuring new versions of tracks by Marc Moulin and Tony Hester. The latter's simmering soul classic 'In the Rain' (originally featured on The Dramatics' 1971 album Whatcha See is Whatcha Get) is transformed into a Bob James style jazz-funk workout by the talented Japanese trio, with keys-man Daisuke Takeuchi delivering a series of jammed-out electric piano solos. He's also in fine form on the combo's flipside take on Moulin's 'Humpty Dumpty', a more fluid and up-tempo affair featuring jazzier drums and some squelchy synth-bass.

Review: Nautilus are a Japanese band named after the iconic Bob James song, which also tells you a lot about their style - which is a mix of modern rare groove that also embodies elements of jazz, funk, disco, soul and hip hop. In just five years they have built up a solid global fan base and this new single explains why. 'Move On Up' (feat Mizuki Kamata) is both filled with golden era acid jazz goodness, but also slick modern jazz tinged grooves that fit right in with the contemporary landscape. ON the flip, 'Track 2' is more slow and late night, a tender basement jam for cuddly dancing.

Review: Ramrock Retro strikes gold again with Aaron Neville's soulful classic 'Hercules.' This track instantly stirs real emotions with Neville's effortless, heartfelt vocals, deep-swinging drums and classy horns. A falsetto at the breakdown elevates the song before the rhythm powers on. On the flip side, Al Jarreau's 'Use Me' delivers familiar yet timeless vibes. Review: Cliff Nobles's northern soul gem 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' is a vital part of the cannon that gets a welcome reissue here by the good folk at Matasuna. It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. "Peixeira Amolada e Quebra Queixo" draws on two cultural symbols: the sharp knife and a traditional Angolan candy, symbolising both struggle and direct action. For the first time, the band uses guitar, weaving it into a groove full of counter-melodies, representing daily battles for survival in Brazil. 'Mariposa Tigre' blends funk, ethno-groove, and jazzy brass with a reggae-infused twist, creating an irresistible rhythm. Review: Since rapidly appearing in, and disappearing from, record stores last autumn, this four-track EP from producer Neil Anderson's unashamedly revivalist Original Gravity label has become something of an in-demand item - hence this limited-edition, white vinyl reissue. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth checking, in part because it delivers four radically different versions of the same basic track. Review: The Original Gravity label's latest must-check missive is unusual, featuring as it does four tracks squeezed on to one limited edition seven-inch single. As the title suggests, it's Latin-themed, with two artists (overseen by Welwyn Garden City-based producer Neil Henderson) delivering two sweaty South American funk workouts apiece. Grupo Los Yoyi - "Paco La Calle" (Nick The Record re-edit) (8:11)
Review: Dan Tyler and Nick The Record's third installment in the Mr Bongo Edits series brings a bold twist to Cuban classics with three tracks that are equal parts cosmic and dancefloor-ready. On the A-side, Tyler extends two Juan Pablo Torres tracks from his reissued 1978 'Algo Nuevo' and 1977's 'Super Son.' First, Tyler reimagines 'Cacao,' a standout track from Torres' LP, giving it room to breathe and intensifying the percussive climax with swirling synths and spacey dub effects. It's a track that thrives on a big system, building tension as it goes, and works wonders in the right environmentijust ask anyone who caught it at La Paloma in Barcelona. Next, Tyler dials into 'Pastel En Descarga,' turning the Latin-funk fusion into a punchy, trippy dub with delay and drama, keeping the track's energy while taking it further into spacey, cosmic territory. On the flip, Nick The Record tackles Grupo Los Yoyi's 1977 'Paco La Calle,' taking a 2009 edit and expanding it into a longer, more hypnotic piece. The percussion pushes and pulls as the psychedelic synths swirl, creating a dynamic and ever-building groove. The 2025 version is elevated with new synth lines courtesy of Tyler, deepening the track's psychedelic richness. A cosmic whirlwind of reworks that bridges the gap between '70s Cuban innovation and modern dancefloor sensibilities.

The Stones Throw offshoot was responsible for a much called for 2009 reissue of the duo's first album Away With Melancholy - released in typically limited quantities via Jazzman. Two years on and the duo come forth with some fifteen tracks of new material which is delightfully presented across two ten inches housed in a veritable book of a gatefold sleeve. Inside you get a typically expert range of dusty funk, retro psychedelia and library breaks with the final neck snapping track "Biscuits" a particular highlight.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent working condition***

It's quite hard to comprehend that such a pivotal album in the history of free jazz has taken this long to be reissued. Originally coming out in 1980, Visions Of The Third Eye is a landmark piece of work which saw the untamed terrain of free jazz being navigated with a certain soulful, spiritual bent which lands differently compared to a lot of other works in the genre. New Life Trio was made up of monumental drummer Steve Reid, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist David Wertman, and on this record they broke down barriers but never at the expense of the feeling. Now Early Future have faithfully reissued the album with an appropriate level of grandeur, remastered and featuring a 20-page zine with interviews, essays and more.

Review: Decorated Leeds funk smelters The New Mastersounds deliver their 11th album and it's a powerful assault of the groove senses from the off. Leaving no stone unturned, they run the gamut and back with raw skill and a tightness than can only come from playing with each other for nigh on 20 years. From the jazz freeform spirals of "Green Was Beautiful" to the fuzzy rock fizz of "Funk 49" to the swinging bubblegum fun of "Groovin' On The Groomers" and the diesel powered soul funk of "Gonna Be Just Me", it's another sizzling snapshot of one of the UK's finest groove exports of our times.

Review: Few do funky soul jazz sessions as well as The New Mastersounds, who first formed in Leeds in 1999 and have gone on to be regulars at the Jazz Cafe as well as New Orleans' annual Jazz Fest. Late last year in Denver, the band linked up with vocalist Lamar Williams Jr (son of the late Allman Brothers bassist Lamar Williams) to record this high class album of soulful horns, live drums and heartfelt vocals, all finished off with percussion by Thievery Corporation's Jeff Franca. Digging deep into the history of funk while also looking to a new paradigm, "Shake It" is an album of feel-good emotions that make a lasting impression.

Review: Erstwhile producer to the very biggest names in hip-hop, and one of Fiddy's G-Unit faces, Nick Speed has flown the coop to develop his own solo career with the help of KDJ's Mahogani imprint. And he's making quite the statement; The Beat Down sizzles with myriad inspirations and influences, pitching Speed somewhere between Kanye and Dangermouse. At one moment we're marching to the military heritage of "Say Good Bye", the next moment our heads are revolving deliriously at the savage 8-bit techno wheezes of "The Agent". Blurring the lines between electronica, hip-hop and raw soul, this is an engaging listen that captivates from start to finish.

Review: Spanish label Saft has a fantastic catalogue of richly musical deep house and now one of its legals adds this fantastic jazz-funk-house effort. It is a cosmic soup of Rhodes chords, gorgeous percussion and glowing melodies that are as warm as toast and beautiful by design. Each track feels live, with some funky numbers like 'Find A Way' next to more overtly jazzy ones and perfect broken beat such as 'Escape On A Sunny Day.' It is a talented group of musicians who have put this one together and it's a timeless affair from front to back,

Review: Nkono Teles was one of the standouts of the Doing It In Lagos compilation by Soundway, which proved a best seller. He is someone who worked on, arranged and or produced music for more than 100 other artists in Nigeria across the 80s, including playing keys with Tony Allen's band. Now he gets the spotlight firmly on himself with a retrospective mini-comp fun of his unique boogie and funky rhythms, cutting edge drum machine sounds and mix of synths and guitars. It's a collection fans of the likes of William Onyeabor and Steve Monite will love.

Review: Released the same week as Mark De Clive Lowe's collaboration album with the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, it's definitely the month for electronic/dance-based acts getting physical with full bands. Here The Taxidermist takes a more free-form approach with different musicians gracing different tunes. The message is the same throughout; soft sonic tremors, sweet surprises and moments of truly unique melody. It's all beautiful, but highlights include the lone trumpet stumbling over strange-signature percussion of "Angels & Demons At Play" and the 70s TV theme tune flavour of "Algernon".

It might not be quite as groundbreaking as Dangermouse's "The Grey Album", which expertly blended elements of The Beatles "The White Album" with Jay-Z acapellas, but Amerigo Gazzaway's fusion of James Brown and the Notorious B.I.G is equally as impressive in its own way. His blends of Brown breaks, vocal snippets and instrument samples with hip-hop beats and Biggie Smalls acapellas are uniformly brilliant, expertly crafted, imaginative and undeniably dancefloor-friendly. It's the sort of album that you didn't think that you needed but really do; certainly, any of the 11 tracks will get a rapturous response when unleashed on dancefloors.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

On their debut album, 2016's the Tony Allen Experiments, Naples twosome Nu Guinea re-invented tracks by the legendary Afro-beat drummer as synth-heavy chunks of deep jazz-funk and nu-Balearica. For this follow-up - their first full length entirely made up of their own compositions - the duo serves up a set of jazz-funk, disco and boogie cuts rich in both their trademark colourful analogue synthesizer sounds and live instrumentation. It's a formula that guarantees a string of memorable highlights, from the sun-kissed peak-time brilliance of "Disco Sole" and rubbery, funk-fuelled "Je Vulesse" (a killer vocal number), to the wobbly downtempo trip of "A Voce E Napule" and Mizell Brothers fizz of closer "Parev Ajare", the album's most synthesizer-heavy cut.
