Cat: SSCR 2024003WHITE. Rel: 25 Jun 24
Stronger (main) (4:19)
Stronger (dub) (4:35)
Review: After the March drop of this record caused quite the stir, the label is now back with a limited edition white vinyl version to make it all the more vital an addition to your shelves. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo and their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full-length album from 2019. It is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure to reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. A classy party starter, for sure.

Why You Buggin'

Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Catch This Train (2:42)
Glass Tears (2:51)
Not In My Name (3:53)
Review: Dancefloor Stompers was formed in Sardinia in 2009. They are a talented group of musicians who have a big love of mod jazz, black music roots and Italian soundtracks and library music classics from the 50s through to the 80s and all of that influences this new EP, Phuture Soul. Recorded and mixed at Solid Twin Studio between May 2021 and January 2022, it kick off with the title track which pairs rock guitars with funky basslines. 'Catch This Train' has a more playful pop-rock feel with big horns, 'Glass Tears' is a smoother groove and 'Not In My Name' closes on a more downbeat note.

Moving On (version) (4:03)
Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

I've Been Hurt So Many Times (3:13)
Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

Keep It Moving (4:09)
Review: Daytoner have got a new album on the way and we can't wait, but before that the group serve up this sizzling new funk single. This crew are well experienced and have travelled far and wide, taking their funk and soul sound to the UK's greatest stages over the last five years. The album was written in isolation during the lockdown and this new pair of singles is a great taster - 'Time' and 'Keep It Moving' both feature lead singer Lucy's fresh vocals as she muses on the importance of time spent with family and friends. The funk-fuelled brass and breaks keep both tunes vibing.

In The Disco
Play It
Review: As far as the Juno Records review team care, the DC based Peoples Potential Unlimited have been on a run of 100% boogie heaters roughly since their inception in 2008. The latest transmission from Andrew Morgan's label sees a 12" presentation of disco funk holy grails from Milwaukee act Dazzle ahead of a PPU released long player Made In The Shade. Not to be confused with the Patch Adams and Leeroy Burgess fronted group of the same name, Dazzle was the work of Donald D. Smith and this 12" presents three tracks originally recorded in 1981. "Explain" is the outright jam here, heavily stacked with thick analogue leads and brisk funk riffs. All hail PPU!

Teenager (3:31)
Review: The Four Flies 45s series opens a new chapter with a collection of super-groovy themes from the finest Italian soundtracks. They are being pressed up to 45rpm for the first time and the opening salvo is from Gianni Proia's Mondo Di Notte Oggi, a 1976 Mondo movie. Gianni Oddi and Gianni Dell'Orso scored it having worked in a wide range of genres and on many soundtracks before this one. 'Soul Meeting' is summery soul and upbeat Latin grooves with a big piano phrase powering it along. 'Teenager' is more deep cut and elegant with its big horns and strings.

Review: Springbok Records main man Stephane Deschezeaux specialises in good-time grooves, with many of his occasional vinyl outings drawing on a wide-range of complimentary musical influences and a love of utilising familiar vocal snippets or musical samples. Trip Paris To Sao Paolo sticks to this funky, ear-pleasing formula, with Deschezeaux and a string of guests dancing between flash-fried, Clavinet-and-Moog-sporting hip-hop-funk ('Gran Torino'), P-funk flavoured nu-disco goodness (the Sugarhill Gang cover-with-a-twist that is 'Hot & Sweaty (The Beat Don't Stop Mix)'), post-boogie/'80s soul slickness ('Time For Joy (The Bankerbeats Remix)') and Universal Robot Band-esque early '80s disco (the joyous 'Mystery (TFJ Remix)'. As musical road trips go, it's a treat.

Gurami (4:13)
Gradients (3:43)
Review: The sublime 'Gurami' is the first single from the forthcoming Origin of Forms album. It makes a debut long player from the Moscow funk band The Diasonics and it is a richly layered and widely cinematic affair with post-Soviet era psychedelia, deep funk, and instrumental hip-hop colouring the grooves, But ahead of this comes the equally deep-cut 'Gurami' on limited edition 45rpm. It has rolling drums and a nice psyched-out wah wah guitar and meandering leads that truly mesmerise. The go-slow 'Gradients' is falloff intrigue and mystery as it unfolds in thoughtful and alluring fashion.

Review: From their only album The Agony & Extasy, Philly troupe The Diddys - led by Hammond doyen Charles England - took soul to some far-out places in 1977. "Intergalactic Love Song" is a fine example of their star-slurping skills. The original has a much more prominent vocal position, leaving the outer-planetary textures to form a clear-but-subtle bed while the alternate version has more of a persistent groove where the organs get a chance to really take off.

E.M.E with 'Disco Ball,' a sassy, high-energy track featuring a standout brass ensemble, while track 2, 'Ain't No Doubt About It' by Moplen, entices with disco beats, bongo rhythms, and a masterful bassline. Review: Serial alias addict, Kris Holmes returns with a double side of split personality: The Disciples is a rough, bluesy layered piece of slo-mo surf rock where the drums only just keep up and the organs provide heavy soul salvation. "He Spoke" shows Kris on much more of an African inspired trip. Similarly hefty organs power the main groove but there's more uplift in the riff and instrumentation. Insatiable.

Poppa Large (Dapper B Boy remix) (3:26)
Review: Australian cutmaster DJ Bacon is on a relentless mission to bring you mash-ups, edits and flips of all shapes and sizes, and he's at it once again on his self-titled label with a reissue of his deadly Sweatin' On The Dancefloor 7". Cutting up all manner of classic funk, disco rap and more besides, the trainspotters out there could have a lot of fun dissecting every sample and cut that flicks in and out of the mix on both these tracks, but that turntable trickery doesn't come at the expense of the groove. These tracks will absolutely turn a party out given half a chance, and given how much the first pressing fetches, you won't want to delay on nabbing this one while it's around.

Review: Australian cutmaster DJ Bacon is a rather brilliant studio wizard who has mixed and mashed up all manner of disparate sounds over the years, from Pink Floyd to Beastie boys. Here he goes again with his own self released 7" series. Up first this time out is 'I Know You Got De La' which bangs together hip hop and funk into a lively bit of dance floor dynamite with raw 60s vocal yelps and more smooth groves and fluid bars. Review: Brisbane's DJ Bacon is back on the case with more of that funky fresh, party starting hip-hop magic that has made him a household name in Australia for some 30 years. On the A side, he serves up a rough and ready remix of The Pharcyde's 'Soul Flower' which goes in heavy on the JB breaks and keeps the vibe strictly old-skool. Review: Dusty Donuts is a mighty fine label that deals only in the most authentic hip hop beats. They have been a while due to going son in the world from pandemics to warfare but now make an essential return with Balkan phenom DJ Goce. It's inspired by the neo-soul of the late 90s and eery 90s, with crisp boom-bap drums that chelate great Dilla would be proud of. The A-side is full of catchy loops and yearning vocals while the flip rolls a little deeper with 'All These Problems' also having snappy but dusty MPC drums and a nagging vocal that you never want to end.

'Evil' is the sort of steamy, funk laced gem that you might expect to come from the studio one certain Moodymann. 90% Of Main Source (4:04)
Review: TakeFingz is a new label out of Brisbane that won plenty of fans with its first offering and now comes on strong with a second bristling brew of beats. Much like Toby Gee who was behind the first 45rpm, Deejay Katch is a member of the Forty Five Kings Collective and has been laying down beats ever since the 80s while also being a key part of Resin Dogs, a famed Aussie hip-hop crew, since 1996. Japanese crate digger and beat shredder Muro is known for unearthing the most obscure samples and loops and recreating a narrative that you usually only hear in horror films or nightmares. 1999's horn-tickling "Jam" is no exception and will find favour amongst Dilla and Flying Lotus fans alike. J Rocc's edit is even crazier as it ups the tempo and adds a whole load of glitches along the way. Vibrant but viscous.

Review: Throughout his career, DJ S has delivered a steady stream of slow-motion re-edits, so it's no surprise to find the former Chopshop contributor pop up on Too Slow To Disco's popular edit series. The four reworks on show are naturally tasteful, classily produced, largely free of the kind of quantized extra beats employed by lesser-quality editors. The Greek scalpel fiend starts by offering his version of a much-loved downtempo disco classic, wisely extending the original version's instrumental passages before introducing the lead vocal ('Groovin'), before dipping the tempo further on the seductive is-it-soul-or-is-it-disco brilliance of 'Sweet Love'. 'Back Again' is a languid chunk of sun-splashed slow motion disco rich in jazzy guitar licks and meandering sax solos, while 'U' is a glassy-eyed, loved-up treat.

First up is 'Sole Power', an extra-percussive deep funk treat rich in flanged guitar licks, booming bass, rising horns and suitably sizable drum-breaks. Review: What could be more exciting for the funk lover in your life (whether that's you or someone else) than an insanely limited-edition, festively themed "45" from famously reliable party-starter DJ Tron and his regular vocalist Luana? If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Only 95 of these hand-numbered sevens were ever pressed, so act fast if you want to grab a copy.

Review: New release from Private stock is a double dose of boom bap funk! On Side A, DJ Zimmie recreates an iconic party break with all the OG elements. On Side B, Double A took a super funky classic and somehow added even more funk.

Marraio (4:31)
Review: The fresh new tropical green 45rpm from Djar One is a trip to warmer and sunnier climates in Latin America. Strictly limited to just 100 copies it opens with 'Eu Bebo Sim,' an upbeat and funky tune riddled with infectious keys and tumbling drums, bird calls and bendy basslines to make you shift. The comes 'Marraio,' an even more lively jam this time define by its infectious horn sections and suffering samba rhythms, with spaced out synth work adding a trippy vibe under the Portuguese vocal raps.

Ain't That Terrible (3:55)
Review: Djar One has been busy slinging out funky 7"s since 2015, doing some choice remixes and cut-up breakbeat joints for the DJs to get busy with, and he's back on his Beats House label with another sure shot. This time he's taking to Gloria Jones original stomping classic, 'Tainted Love', and giving it a respectful re-rub to do even more damage on the floor. On the flip, we get a rushing version of Roy Redmond's take on 'Ain't That Terrible', which sounds like a mighty juggernaut crying out for the talc to get thrown down on this essential single. This particular edition comes as a fetching magenta pressing too, so don't sleep if you love a bit of coloured wax.

Caipirinha (3:57)
Review: In a move towards soulful French electro-funk from the duo that brought us 'Caipirnha', comes the latest new single from DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson. The two producers here bring together a vast cast of musicians playing everything from Moog to claviers, culminating in a texturally rich afro-soul single that urges us to "hold our horses" ('Pas Si Vite') in these troubling times.

Twinkle Tx (5:12)
Review: We'll never have too much of Ed Upton's slick electro fare, and he's on especially funky form on this new DMX Krew drop for Magnetron. 'Seriously' is a boogie-informed joint with all the sweet and sexy synth licks you would expect, piling the squelchy Moog lines on heavy and aiming squarely at the hips. 'Weird One' nudges some of those boogie motifs towards a curious amalgam somewhere between braindance and synth-pop - that might sound like a funny crossover but it sounds wholly natural. 'Shut Up' is more explicitly leaning towards a freaky proto house sound, while 'Back Again' switches stance for some sneaky electro fare. Quite simply, every track is a masterclass, but then what else would you expect from the mighty DMX?

Old Skool Bounce (3:39)
It Really Matters To Me (3:33)
Review: Aaron aka Double A really serves up a double a-sided banger here for the Friday's Funky 45 label. It is a block-rocking beat with plenty of old-school samples and raw funk drumming that kick off on 'Old Skool Bounce'. The vocals are visceral call-and responses with a classic lead flute sound bring the joy. On the flip, things start with a super cool and breezy beat before a big vocal erupts and the prickly funk drums and rim shots elevate the track. It's another classic vocal top line that finishes it in style.

Warped Pigs (Jeyone's Boom Bap Refix) (4:20)
Review:  Double A is the Horizons Music label boss and here he steps up the plate with a tasteful new rework of a classic hip hop joint fro the golden era. This one harks back to 1992 and was never originally released on a 7". 'Don't Sweat It' (Double A's Classic Breaks rework) is a lithe cut with nice bendy bass and sunny sax stabs as well as killer breaks. On the reverse is something different, a flip of a rock classic that gos more raw and energetic. Both tunes are sure to do plenty of damage.

The Gaff - "High Life" (45 edit) (3:42)
Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. Two label mainstays decorate each side of this one: for the A, Double A asks 'You Feel Alright?' We certainly do, not least thanks to the artist's heavy locking down of sampled big boom drums, funky grooves and evil laughter. The Gaff meanwhile offers up a breakbeat banger to the altar, letting up on bass for a weird, flauting finish. 7"s collectors, watch out.

King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Shake Up The Dance" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label is at it once again, combing through hidden pockets to serve up the finest nuggets from bygone days. The label is on a shuffling reggae tip this time around, with their latest single headed up by Lonnoya Drake singing a snappy version of the sentimental soul classic, 'Only You'. It's infectious dancefloor magic with heart to match its heat, setting up nicely for the heads-down get-down of 'Shake Up The Dance' by Woodfield Road All Stars. This sharp-shooting outfit lay down a killer instrumental with a nagging skank and some heavy-vibing organ lines sure to get the dance juiced up good and proper.

J's Pocket (2:50)
Review: Strap in for this one because the opener 'Challenger' is a high speed, highly funk bit of broken beat brilliance from The Drawbars. The newly emergent band from Hamburg have a sound defined by their fast jazz drums and the Hammond B3 organ. They call themselves gentlemen in the wrong decade because of their love for a certain jazz sound but that's fine by us. On the flipside, 'J's Pocket' is a more downbeat, mellifluous tune with noodling jazz keys and deeper drums that sink you in deep. A fine yin and yang for sure.

Review: Milo MacMahon and Raul Indipwo aka Duo Ouro Negro, arrived in Portugal in 1959 and built an international music career over three decades. Singing in Portuguese, Angolan languages, French and more, they also covered Latin American and North American songs and connected with the Civil Rights movement during their 1969 U.S. tour. This experience shaped their 1972 landmark album, Blackground, which was a powerful cultural statement influenced by Black Power, jazz and African independence movements. In 1981, Blackground was reworked with new arrangements including the instrumental 'Danca do Robalinho' which came in two parts. This jazz-funk masterpiece now gets reissued for the first time and is a must-buy.

I Can Tell (3:46)
Still In Love (3:41)
Review: The black-owned Austin Boogie Crew label has released some of the finest revivalist boogie, synth-disco, '80s soul and electronic funk of the last few years. Here they begin 2022 in fine fashion too via a surprise new single from boogie-era originals Dynasty, a Los Angeles-based label who put out a string of classic cuts on SOLAR during the 1980s. The two tracks here, which were both recorded in 2021, are vintage-sounding boogie-soul gems, with vocoder-sporting A-side 'I Can Tell' sounding like Dynasty making a Chromeo record (which is rather meta, given their 1980s records influenced Chromeo's trademark sound). 'Still In Love', all clipped guitar riffs, fluid boogie bass, sweet synth-strings and glassy-eyed vocals, is arguably even better.

Emmaculate - "Boogie On Disco Woman" (6:41)
Review: Like a veteran striker in his final season, GAMM has really captured some top form on late and now drops a fire premiere from Chicago's Emmaculate and legendary Basement Boys producer DJ Spen. Opener 'Step Into A Black Whole' is a genre-hopping 11-minute journey that moves from deep house to a hip-hop breakdown featuring KRS-One before morphing into a jazzy Afrobeat stomper. First heard by GAMM contributor Coflo during a wild house set, the track blew the roof off and always will. On the B-side, 'Boogie On Disco Woman' delivers a gritty funk, disco and soul rework with raw drums, clavinets and soulful vocals. Two standouts.
