Sorrow Tears & Blood (4:20)
Review: Here comes the first single from the upcoming Chico Mann album "Double Life". The acclaimed producer and guitarist is back with his first work since 2013, and is in fine fettle. Once again finding new ways to collide hard rock and West African funk, first up is 'Come Inside', which has been a firm favourite in his live shows and is a collaboration with bassist JP Maramba that's full of fierce energy. Reeves it and you'll get a psyched out cover of Fela Kuti's 'Sorrow Tears & Blood' with a hooky groovy and powerful underlying message.

Conjunto Raza - "African Dream" (3:15)
The Scepters - "Message" (3:50)
Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Review: No one knows much about the history of The Engineers, but they were a curio of psych rock from Iran in the late 60s or early 70s. The band members are credited as Abbas Miraftab and Reza Agah, and they have a sound which is raw and dynamic, capturing everything exciting about that golden era for fuzzy, overdriven rock with a liberal dose of funk in its bones. This reissue of their insanely rare single is coming on Juzz Records, a label from Tehran which has been set up to carry this incredible artefact.

Review:  Have you ever wondered what might happen when you collide Mighty Ryeders' timeless rare-groove classic 'Evil Vibrations' and De La Soul's iconic hip-hop jam 'A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'' into one new tune? Well, wonder now more, because that's exactly what Groove-Diggers have done here. This fresh version blends the sampled parts of 'Evil Vibrations' with De La Soul's raps and vocals while Japanese hip-hop group FNCY have added their own new mic work into the mix as a way of paying tribute to De La Soul's original hit. Also included is a Japanese cover of 'Evil Vibrations' by Taiwanese jazz and neo-soul singer 9m88 which brings a whole different respective. A fun and sure-to-be effective package.

Front Office - "Wow" (2:14)
Holzer & Pure Love - "Pure Love" (3:06)
Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

Review: The JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra formed in 2006 with a strong influence from grandmaster Fela Kuti, but equally with a clear-sighted intention to take their music in a new direction they deemed neoafrobeat. Japanese label Soul Garden have become a natural home for their sound since 2009 debut LP Afro Sound System, and they're back on Soul Garden once again with their latest single, a cover of Aretha Franklin's universally adored funk pinnacle, 'Rock Steady'. As well as the band's effervescent original version on the A side, on the flip we get an edit of the track by MACKA-CHIN with just a few tweaks here and there for the DJs.

Rock Steady (Macka-Chin edit) (4:25)
Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Swipe this coloured reissue before it goes again, you have to hear it to feel it.

Review: The titular release from Kumomi Records, based in Japan, hears Okinawa salsa band Kachimba 1551 fuse two enduring traditions: Okinawa folk music and salsa. The band embarked on this fusion first in 1998 and have continued their activities in their hometown of Okinawa ever since. A-sider, their rendition of 'Asatoya Yunta', appears first - a folk song said to have originated on Taketomi Island in the Yaeyama Islands, and which has been covered by many musicians around the world (including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Akiko Yano). On the B, meanwhile, is 'Uminu Chinboraa', said to have been handed down from 'Ie Island In Kunigami Gun Of Okinawa', a folk song known for its use in traditional party settings.

Review:  Mystical psychedelic rock with a dash of Anatolian music comes courtesy of Alexander Korostinsky, one of the key musicians behind The Sextones and an accomplished Turkish songwriter and producer. 'Bones Of God' is a filmic psychk-funk track, hitting on alternate notes of glee and hypnosis. 'Altin Maske', meanwhile, pares things back even deeper into romantic, hypnotic undertones, melting and heat-hazing our ears into happy submission.

Badawee (4:22)
Review: While his releases are always rooted in the twin attractions of jazz and psychedelia, Israeli producer Kutiman tends not to stick to one specific sound for very long. Having flitted between numerous styles in the last 12 months he's decided this time to focus on desert funk. He begins by mixing North African and Middle Eastern influences on the hip-wiggling dancefloor fuzziness of "Saluf" - an ear-pleasing affair rich in mazy organ solos, punchy horns, spacey Moog lines and an infectious and potent handclap-heavy rhythm. Flipside "Badawee" is a deeper and more luxurious affair, where intergalactic synthesizer lines and flowery melodies stretch out across a loose-limbed, bass-heavy groove.

Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's latest EP is a joint release with Calico Discos. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of "Dallas", the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener "Cebando" (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of "Atlantis".

Review: These two rare 1970s Panamanian gems are long-forgotten tracks from The Meditators and Los Misticos that now get pressed up to a very colourful 7", though we also have a plain black version. These Latin psych-funk recordings were created for radio but were stored away for many years and now listening back they offer a glimpse into the vibrant, underground scene of Panama. Beautifully remastered and licensed through Tamayo Records, these rediscovered songs are now available after originally being pressed in extremely limited quantities. These tracks provide a unique chance for listeners to experience Panama's hidden musical treasures while adding some heat to any collection.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series is like catnip to all collectors of Latin music. It has turned out more than 85 editions that cover all forms of South American soul and funk. This time out it's a is sublime four-tracker from the much loved Brazilian pair of Luli Lucinha e O Bando. It first saw the light of day in 1972 but has long since been lost to the public. Aspects of psychedelic rock, MPB and folk are all stirred dup with the tunes being held together by Luli and Lucinha's vocals. The EP is packed with magic and musical brilliance and also features Brazilian percussionist Alyrio Lima, who was a member of the iconic Weather Report in later years.

This latest 7" tackles some mighty original material in the form of Thelma Houston's gloriously uplifting 70s Motown classic 'I'm Here Again'. It's just as life-affirming and joyous in Mr K's hands with some extra drum weight and drawn-out grooves that will energise any dancefloor. Review: It was way back in 1998 when Japan's undisputed King of Diggin', DJ.producer/mix-maker and dedicated record collector Muro, first released 'Han-Tome'. These days, it's regarded as a Japanese hip-hop classic, and listening back to this reissue it's easy to see why: the beats are dope, the producer's jazz and orchestral samples beautifully incorporated into the backing track, and the combination of Japanese rap verses and R&B style sung choruses every bit as good as those you'd expect on big-name American tracks from the same period. As it did first time around, the track comes backed by the superb 'Flutestrumental Mix'. This adds sun-kissed keyboard stabs and flighty flute solos to Muro's formidably head-nodding beats..

Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Japanese funk and soul ensemble with a.yu.mi. handling lead vocals, a singer celebrated for her funky style reminiscent of James Brown but captured here in a more romantic and subdued mood here. 'Will' is a new single on Soul Garden that offers up soulful and pop-leading sounds with elegant vocals and graceful grooves backed by big band horns. Interestingly, the same tune gets served up again on the flipside, only sung in English. It neither improves nor detracts from the original but proves to be an interesting experiment for that reason.

He's been honing his craft since the early 2000s and has played with the likes of Charles Bradley, Lee Fields and Brian Jackson. Okuribushi (Ryuhei The Man instrumental re-edit) (2:28)
Review: Experienced Japanese singer Anna Soto and jazz-funk multi-instrumentalist Toshiyuki Sasaki have offered up a number of collaborative singles of late, each of which has been given the re-edit treatment by one-man production line Ryuhei The Man. As with the other recent Sato/Sasaki releases he's tweaked, Ryuhei offers up two edits of 'Okuribushi', a bustling affair that combines traditional Japanese vocals and instrumentation (and specifically the sound of the shansin, a three-stringed instrument from Osaka) with driving drums that sit somewhere between celebratory disco and the jazz stylings of Max Roach. The superior version - for us, at least - is the full vocal A-side edit, though some may prefer Ryuhei's instrumental take.

Review: You wait for one collaboration between singer Anna Sato and multi-instrumentalist Toshiyki Sasaki, and four come along at once. As he did with the pair's three previous collaborative 45s, all of which were released simultaneously this week, experienced re-editor Ryuhei The Man is the, erm, man applying the magic dancefloor touch. On side A, he delivers a vocal edit of 'Hounenbushi', an inventive fusion of traditional-sounding singing, sanshin sounds and loose-limbed but laidback jazz-funk drumming courtesy of Sasaki. The quality of the latter's drumming and Sato's sanshin playing comes through loud and clear on the flipside instrumental edit.

Bad Junkie Blues (3:49)
Review: Fourth Wave reissue one of the great works of Japanese composer, keyboardist and producer Hiroshi Sato. Forming part of a fresh flood of reissues that the label have explicitly mandated, Sato's are highlights among a discrete period of exquisitely recorded and visually designed LPs from the late 70s and early 80s. With a sleekly surreal cover artwork by Tadanori Yokoo - psych rock's pastiching answer to Vaughan Oliver - Sato brought chilled finger-flair to his various recorded synth patches, electric pianos, chamber brasses and guitars, all of which are recorded to produce a precise, razored sound in xpander-funk. Something latent - something much more - than mere smooth AOR is conveyed here. Perhaps it can be focalised in the LP's aura of effortless, disengaged mellowness, as if good comportment and style is an inevitability of life in cosmopolitan 80s Tokyo.

Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. Review: Ajate's third album, Dala Toni, is a vibrant fusion of Afro groove and Japanese traditional Ohayashi music, showcasing the band's innovative approach to blending diverse musical traditions. Founded by Japanese musician Junichiro "John" Imaeda after a revelatory experience in West Africa, Ajate brings together ten passionate musicians to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. Utilizing a mix of traditional instruments like drums, flutes, and bells, as well as handmade bamboo instruments crafted by Imaeda himself, such as the unique 'Jaate' and 'Piechiku,' Ajate's sound is both powerful and distinctive. Their incorporation of Afrobeat rhythms and Japanese vocals adds further depth and richness to their music, reflecting themes of human connection, unity, and the joy of life.Having gained acclaim for their explosive live performances in Japan and beyond, including appearances at prestigious festivals like Sukiyaki Meets The World and WOMAD UK, Ajate's music resonates with audiences worldwide. With Dala Toni, they continue to push the boundaries of global music, solidifying their position as pioneers of the genre "made in Japan."
