Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Danny Scrilla - "Lighter" (4:23)
Review: When it comes to deep dubby halftime, few labels are as reliable, forward-thinking or exciting as Amit's Amar. Here we find the label boss giving Scrilla the keys to last summer's hummer "Fatty Batty". Adding more melodic layers and cool double-ups on the kicks, Danny's turned in the perfect remix that pays respect to the original while taking it further into pastures unknown. Flip for "Lighter", a straight up dubwise joint with a kick so steady, reliable and dependable it could give you a reference for a mortgage. Serious.

Bukkha & Dubbing Sun & Kol Ee - "War" (Sound Control remix) (4:00)
Kol Ee & Dubbing Sun & Family Tree Sound - "Jah Jah Guide" (Breez remix) (4:39)
Review: War Remix brings together Bukkha, Dubbing Sun, Kol Ee and Family Tree Sound for a deep, bass-heavy reimagining of reggae and dub. The track is built around atmospheric grooves that flex with a blend of electronic textures and organic instrumentation and there's an undeniable urgency in the mix, with each artist adding their own layersiwhether it's the skittering percussion, dubbed-out vocals, or deep sub-bass that keeps everything moving forward. It's a remix that feels grounded in the roots of dub but pushes into new territory, a space where tradition meets innovation. Expect a sound that hits hard on the dancefloor but leaves room for introspection too. This release adds something fresh for fans of experimental reggae and dub, with enough of the old school to keep it connected.

Bad (6:34)
Badder (6:33)
Review: Although Rhythm & Sound and Basic Channel man Mark Ernestus has worked with or remixed many different artists over the years, we didn't expect him to join forces with D&B scene stalwarts Calbre and DRS. Yet that's exactly what's on offer here, as the Hardwax founder delivers two typically deep, dubbed-out techno outings crafted from portions of the pair's collaborative cut 'Badman', which is due to feature on Calbre's forthcoming sixteenth studio album, Feeling Normal. Both 'Bad' and 'Badder' are typical of Ernestus' ultra-deep and hypnotic style, with snippets of the duo's original instruments, beats and vocals echoing in and out of a warming, all-encompassing, sub-heavy groove. In a word, it's superb.

Guesswerk - "Persian Dub" (4:55)
Review: The cavendish crusaders are at it again. And this time they're rolling out the barrels with full V/A power. Chad Dubz opens with the provocatively titled "Pricks", all sludgy, swampy and twisted while Karnage & Dayzero up the energy with a dramatic symphonic loopy nod to the far east on "No One" while Guesswerk close the show with the long awaited "Persian Dub". On dub for a good couple of years, this gravel throated swinger has been doing the business for a select amount of DJs for some time. Now it's finally yours. From Bristol with fruit. Kanomotis - "Watch Yah Steppa" (VIP) (3:18)
Rawland & Dubdiggerz - "Madness" (4:42)
Flo & Gisaza - "Northern Technique" (3:38)
Review: Slovenian dubstep dons DubDiggerz curate the new collection for their "Chapter" series with this quartet of glorious gloom. CLZ returns to the label with "Haunt", a sludgy number that sucks you in like sinking sand. It's followed by a killer VIP of "Watch Yah Steppa" where a spicy little sample is added to the mix for extra hype. Flip for "Madness" as DubDiggerz bring Rawland into the fold with a tense workout that's prone to sudden textural twists and boasts stacks of space between the percussion. Finally Flo & Gisaza close the EP with a moody marching piece that rumbles ominously building up to big waves of eastern mysticism. Depend on DeepEnd.

Rude
Review: What a double-up! Chestplate boss Distance and Croydon loyalist Cyrus get busy over two different dubstep vibes and come up with two exceptional cuts. "Titan" is the bastard half-speed son of neuro D&B and heavy metal in its make-up. Industrial, gritty and unforgiving, it's utter mechanical filth! "Rude", meanwhile, couldn't be sexier; squeezing the subs as low and as fat as they'll go, the duo have created one of the most authentic dubwise records the scene has seen for a long time.

Kakatua (4:25)
Review: Rudeboy soldiers D Operation Drop make a long-overdue appearance on Navy Cut with three of their most forthright and frank bass jams. Real ploughman funk through and through (as always with these longstanding Italian craftsmen) there's a slow and steady sense of menace and tension running across the whole EP. 'Drainage' sets the scene with its dark demonic vocal and toxic subs, 'Yumura' is a like saw cutting through tough oak, the power behind it getting stronger and stronger with every 16, finally 'Kakatua' brings things to a close with alien bass seeping out of the mix and a cold-as-ice breakdown. Drop them while they're hot.

Sufferah
Review: Previously spotted "Rockin Da Nation" on Lion Charge only two releases ago, Italian bass collective D Operation Drop return to the highly sort-after vinyl-only imprint with two more timeless dub documents... As the title suggests, "Body Rock" is an all-out physical flavour, all percussion and a well-bodied dance dynamic. "Sufferah", meanwhile, taps deeper into the dub psyche with a resonant, relentless walking bassline, big reverb splashes and vague, vapour-like melodica lines. Strictly limited to 100 copies and never to be repressed, this won't be around for long.

Review: After a strong debut year that saw no less than five heavyweight plates, Osiris Music's low key vinyl only offshoot Lion Charge return with their first transmission of 2014. Five man Cesena crew D Operation Drop are handling proceedings this time and rep Italy hard when it comes to the dubwise sound. Idren Natural lends trad style uptown stepper "Rockin Da Nation" some added rootsical vibes with his vocal contribution, whilst "Addis Abeba" is a punchier affair that will get plenty of rewinds from the dubstep selectors out there.

Review: Sweet summer dub direct from Italy, D Operation Drop have always flirted with the more organic sound palettes but this is a whole new level. Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Review: With a tried and tested pedigree on labels such as Nomad, Tuba, Gamma Audio and Bacon Dubs, Italian substers D Operation Drop jump aboard emerging imprint Subaltern and bring Geode along for the ride. The results are unnervingly stark and slick. First up "Stronghold": rhythm-heavy, it builds itself around a hypnotic hook that ricochets back and forth with mesmerising effect. "Angkor" is a more percussive workout that enjoys layers of detailed drum work tightly woven with a dark funk DNA. For added grit jump on Perverse's remix where a guttural bassline lays in wait, ready to chew all suspecting dancefloors' faces off.

Review: Well this is very interesting. A whopping 12 years since his last release, D1 returns with some outstanding cuts. Always famed and respected for his deeper, soulful take on dubstep since his manoeuvres during the movement's formative chapters on iconic labels such as Tempa and Dub Police, he's back and he's packing an even deeper, bewitching brew. 'Veto' goes all out August Pablo with its melodica lines while 'Red Stripe' maintains that traditional soundsystem feel but with more of a jazzier twist. Finally 'Midnight Blues' flips the switch for something a little more UKG in its energy and movement but still keeps that meditative pressure. Welcome back D1.

Review: LoDubs has been turning out delicious dub for nearly 15 years now, often as a bit of a lone ranger out on the west coast of America. One of its key prophets has been Vancouver's Daega Sound who has mapped the bass sound from dubstep into whatever it is called these days with real craft. Here he serves up two more compelling originals in "Gatekeeper" and "Second Strike". The former is filled with tension as the bass and hits lurch from one foot to the other and the latter is all manic loops and crashing hits. Kromestar closes out with a deadly remix that is more menacing than Mike Tyson in his prime.

Review: Some might ask if "State Of Mind" is techno? Others might ask if it's dubstep. We'd rather ask whether you even need to know... Rolling, looping and unfathomably deep, "State Of Mind" wafts with an infectious physical groove, it kicks the tired old genre discussion deep down into the gutter. "Fox Wing", meanwhile, is indeed dubstep. Perfectly executed dubstep at that; spacious, resonant and laced with just a smidgeon of eastern charm. Heavy!

Harnessing the magic of Skatalite's Jonny Moore on both sides, "Mirage" takes us deep into his own cloudy atmospheric universe upon a rolling jazz-minded drum arrangement while "Island Dub" strips everything right back to the crucial constituent parts to allow each rhythmic and dubbed element to sing. Review: Deep dubstep heads may already be aware of Dalek One. He's been releasing good quality music for a couple of years digitally, though the Witchcraft EP appears to be his first appearance on vinyl. There's much to admire throughout, from the bombastic, pulverizing sub-bass and clandestine, Burial style sound soup of opener "Breakthrough", to the fantastically heavy and suitably trippy title track, where both bassline and beats change tempo and time signature several times throughout. The EP's other moment, "Terror Strike", is a dark, stabbing dubstep roller primed for peak-time plays at venerable bass music institutions.

Review: Although Dalek One has been exterminating dancefloors (sorry) for some time, it was only last summer that the deep dubstep don made his long-awaited vinyl debut. Here he keeps up the pressure via a weighty EP on Encrypted Audio. Check first the mangled, electronically scrambled rap vocals and sci-fi riddims of "Eyes Red", before getting your ears around the elongated sub-bass tones, tribal percussion and paranoid electronics of "Wire Tap". If that's not enough to set the pulse racing - and it should be - we'd recommend whacking on the crackling, sub-heavy roller that is time-travelling dancefloor treat "Man Sees Alien". In summary: pleasingly far-out.

Review: To mark a century of releases, admirable Bristol imprint Tectonic has served up something rather special: an EP of future bass business that sees long-serving grime MC Riko Dan adding his flow to fresh beats from some of the label's heaviest hitters. Check, for example, the woozy "purple" synths, ragged sub-bass and stepping beats of the Joker-produced "Hard Food", the indsustrial-strength grime assault of the Pinch-produced "Vibration" and the sparse, clandestine rumble of "Hungry", where Riko Dan's gruff patois flow rises above a skeletal groove. Elsewhere, the Ziro-helmed "Alright Then" sounds like a club anthem in waiting, and Walton's remix of "Big Slug" - a previous club cut from Pinch and Mumdance - is an ethereal, string-laden treat.

Fresh from his debut album and Sam Binga collab on Cosmic Bridge, the German spell-binder makes his debut on Amit's AMAR with four bendy beat fusions. "All Thumbs" is the sound of melting music boxes flickering and burning in 808 flames, "Maelstrom" takes us much deeper into Danny's tubular bass universe and "Quasar" folds up a piece of jazz into tiny pieces before throwing it up into the air and letting it unfold like some type of dreamy parachute. Creepier than a graveyard picnic, it's all in the strange misty textures and powerful sense of tension before the flabbiest of subs kick in and the fun begins. Opening with the sparse, stripped back rhythms of "F-Technology", razor sharp snare hits dovetail between cavernous bass hits to create the kind of dread-inducing atmospheres one associates with the label. "Tremor", meanwhile is all about those rough and tumble drums, while the sub bass groans of "Zoom" and neon-tinged roughness of "Totum" round off an unsurprisingly excellent package. That track is finally available for us mere mortals thanks to Mala's perennially on point Deep Medi imprint. Arriving with a dedication to seminal R&B producer Teddy Riley scribed across both sides of the runout groove, the lead track is just one of those records any self respecting DJ needs in their arsenal, adopting a spacious treatment of fuzzed out purple textures over a gloriously lolloping half step rhythm underlined by the kind of sub bass that consumes you when heard on a big system. Allow yourself to plunge to the depths of dystopian dubstep drama on the flip with "Storm" which retains a certain restrained quality throughout as if some immovable force is holding back the growing rave pressure.

The two tracks here are weighty, intergalactic and otherworldly, mixing dub style rhythms with the kind of angular, razor-sharp sub-bass motifs more often associated with dancefloor dubstep. Both cuts are quality, though it's rolling A-side "Orbit Dub" - all lolloping dub beats, wobble bass, metallic effects and paranoid aural textures - that really stands out.

Review: Dark dubstep allstar Dayzero first came to out attention with 'Allca', where they pitted themselves alongside contemporaries Gantz or Coki in their unique displays of wonk and lo-fi production techniques. 'Pages' and 'Sen' continue this charge; watery, knocky and psychopathic, both tunes sound like a tank trudging through sludge. Militant and gritty.

Digital Dread (5:12)
Review: Have a word... Youngsta's launched a brand new vinyl-only label and DBridge launches it. Need we say more? Both "Fashion Dread" and "Digital Dread" are Darren White at his darkest and most stately - elephantine production, moody and misty and ultimately soaked in beautifully warm bass, both cuts have been doing the rounds on dubs for almost two years and have been in demand since Youngsta debuted them. Simply massive. Get on these quickly.

Waiting For Jah (5:10)
Review: From Bristol with love; DE-TU return to Infernal with more of their signature sweet stuff. "Tried By Tu" will be familiar to many thanks to its heavy dub rotation and those lonely eastern strings that don't as much as pluck at your heart but pull your entire vascular system out. "Waiting For Jah" is a much darker twist up. Primed for real soundsystems and rumbling with sub weight and minimal muscle, if your brain isn't screaming Outlook festival really loudly when you hear this then you might need to consult your GP.

Review: White Peach bringing the juicy freshness once again... This time Bristol duo De Tu step up with three slabs of uncut mysticism. "Koshi" takes the lead with alluring pipes, a loose clanky beat and a vibe so introspective you'll feel you're turning inside out. "Sippin'" extolls the virtue of moderation over an iced grime hybrid, all tricky snare rolls and wild pitch vox. "Slap" brings us into submission with tightly plucked steel strings, a big belly bass tone and more loose limbed drum work. Joie de tu vivre.

Review: Some folk speak gibberish, others speak the language of love, DE-TU "Speak Numbers"... And what beautiful digits they are. Picking up where they left us on White Peach way back in 2018, once again the Bristol duo run the 140 gamut. "Speak Numbers" is a melancholy moment of reflection with delicate chords swooning over faraway voices, "Stay Low" murks things up with stern bars and a grime feel to the beats while "Come To Play" closes with a big wobbly bottomed sub, rippling dub synths and gradual rhythm momentum. Numbers don't lie.

De-Tu & Congi - "Shallow Waters" (4:17)
De-Tu - "When Will We" (4:09)
Congi - "Tides" (3:42)
Review: A big collaboration here that will appeal to fans of the deep dubstep sound. A duo from Nottingham, Gaz and Tulip aka Congi have appeared on Robin Dub, Yellow Flower and White Peach sister label Fent Plates. De-Tu from Bristol is comprised of Christopher Iona and Jevon Ives, who have had releases on Innamind and Infernal Sounds. The result is the meditative street sound of 'Off My Chest' with its emotive lyrical delivery atop. More knackered and introspective beats await on the sombre 'Shallow Waters' until De-Tu take control on the flip with the intricate polyrhythms of 'When Will We'. Congi then deliver something altogether different on the deep and hypnotic closer 'Tides'.

Review: Felix Ruocco aka Deadcrow hails from The Hague, n the Netherlands, which is mostly associated with rip-snorting electro. He is a master of the dub, however, and now makes his debut on Artikal with a killer two tracker that has already been tearing up dubstep dancehalls. Opener "Scrape" has a real sense of character with its playful lead echoing a classic top line, while the reggae drums below are finished with a truly contemporary aesthetic. "Concrete" is all steel drums, wobbling low end and happy guitar riffs for sunny climes.

Baodub - "Find The Dub" (5:28)
Review: The second salvo in Moonshine Recordings' Joint Forces series brings together tracks from Deadroom and Baodub. The former handles the A-side, first unveiling the deep and rumbling bass, steppin' dub riddims and jaunty melody motifs of "Footprint Dub" before reaching for the restless wobble bass and delay-laden drum hits of "Crashed Weed". Baodub takes over on the flipside and can be found merrily skanking away to the mutant reggae stabs, fizzing electronics, twisted sirens and skittish beats of "Call Da Police". To round things off nicely, the same artist slaps down the rolling dunk funk of "Find The Dub", where glistening guitar lines, melodica and delay-laden stabs shuffle around the smoky sound space.

Julia's Dream
Review: Iranian producer Death Trap surfaces on the Modularfield label with the first installment in a planned trilogy of releases themed around his interpretation of the Future as a mixture of Krautrock and Trap. An intriguing concept and thankfully one that shows a bit more ingenuity than simply tacking on some booming trap drums to a CAN track. If anything both productions here have more in common with classic dubstep, especially the spiralling rhythms and crystalline textures of lead track "Taste of Future". The flip houses "Julia's Dream" which is worthy of a Deep Medi B Side.

Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Origination Dub (Bukkha remix) (5:14)
Review: We were quietly impressed by the first 12" from Green King Cuts, a weighty dubstep double-header from C-Side. This follow-up comes courtesy of Bristol-based twosome DE-TU, with accompanying remixes of both tracks by like-minded, Louisiana-based bass-head Bukkha. Opener "Bun Down Babylon" begins in era and paranoid fashion, before effortlessly morphing into a deep and intoxicating dubstep shuffler complete with haunting melody lines and powerful sub-bass. Bukkha raises the temperature and rhythmic intensity on his fine club-ready remix, before DE-TU dips the tempo on the lovingly dub-centric heaviness that is "Origination Dub". To complete a rock solid package, Bukkha sticks a rocket under that track to guarantee increased dancefloor thrills.

Review: Albion Collective don't release very often. But when they do... Magic happens. Following 12"s from Taiko and Vaun & Jafu comes this superb double-up from Digid and friends. The Belgian kicks things off with an all-out chubby skank "Rainbow Dub". Big and riffy and just the right amount of groove, it's an Outlook anthem in waiting. "Come Dung" follows suit with a lower-toned bassline and beats that shuffle so loosely they drag their knuckles. Joining him on the B is Austrian Dubbing Sun for the heavily sprung "Dread Come Again" while Egoless brings matters to a halt with an exceptional plucked bass stepper. Beautiful.

Coral Ree
Review: It's a big one... "2 Much Chat" is one of Mala's most anticipated dubs. Having emerged well over three years ago, it still sounds timeless thanks to its rich percussion and well measured elements. Loopy, rhythmic and insistent, there's a captivating hypnosis coded throughout. Coki's "Coral Reef" is equally as powerful; a deep skank that switches from iced out bass tones to a warmer, rasping soundset, it's been stopping dancefloors in their tracks since Coki first aired it. DMZ releases may be rare, but when they do chat... You best listen!

Coki - "Marduk"
Mala - "Enter Dimensions"
Review: It's not so often we get to enjoy a DMZ release these days, but as you might expect this is primal dubstep that continues the tradition of the earliest forms of the music. Coki's "Marduk" plys his preferred trade in mid-range tweakery. While there's an endless legion of imitators melting faces the world over with this style, it's the restraint Coki exercises that belies his roots in the sound. Mala meanwhile opts for a drawn out slab of dread with a steadily rising synth that is as deadly as it is understated, proving that the originators always do it best.

Review: Fresh from dropping his remarkable Afterlife album on Street Ritual, Colorado's Dillard makes his debut on eclectic Brighton beat stable Small Print with four more warm, cosy, soft-focus vibes. 'Unfolding' shoots us into space with epic dub echoes and far away, gently trickling breaks before 'Why Do I Feel' takes on more of a wavey, Flumey texture with bends and mutations oozing over the scattered kicks. Flip for more delights: 'Jimmy 57' knocks the other 56 jimmies out of the park with its springy beats and jazzy harmonics and Primate finishes the EP with a dreamy, far-out flip. Go unfold yourself.

Sakura (TMSV remix) (4:44)
Review: Koichi Bamba brings his Dimness project back to Subotage Records for the first time in four years. Previously, the Japanese producer has delivered a trio of intoxicating, sub-heavy singles for the imprint, though the Sakura EP - his first ever vinyl outing - is unquestionably the best of the bunch. Particularly potent is the title track, a sub-heavy techno roller in which bleeping, reverb-laden electronic melodies, layered percussion and ghostly chords dance atop a heavy beat. TMSV delivers a wild, sleazy dubstep re-make that makes much of a frankly child-scaring wobble bassline, while bonus cut 'Machine' adds dark synth-string stabs and twinkling pianos to a hybrid UK funky/dubstep rhythm.
