Cause & Effect (blue black & white splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: SPTL 021. Rel: 21 Dec 23
Synergy (8:10)
Suspended Animation (6:34)
Repetition (8:08)
Pharaoh (6:30)
Review: If you don't love ASC, do you even like electronic music? The master studio technician never makes anything less than thrilling sounding whether exploring ambient, jungle, or in-between worlds. Both characterise this new EP on Spatial which comes on lovely splattered vinyl 12". 'Synergy' pairs busy Amen breaks with lush pad work, 'Suspended Animation' is an icy and deft jungle workout in the farthest reaches of deep space and 'Repetition' is a super chill, slick and emotive excursion to the stars. 'Pharaoh' is another pristine production with infectious drum funk at its core.

Exploration #4 (8:42)
Review: Samurai sign out of 2023 with this stunning expedition from longstanding craftsman ASC. One of the deepest to do it, here on 'House Of Leaves' he whips up a beguiling sense of atmosphere as we gradually ramp up the intensity from the tense and stretched out title track opener to the savage cymbal slaps of the finale 'Exploration #4'. In between we find our souls soothed by the relentless drumfunk of 'The Navidson Record' and our brains shattered by the cosmic turbo zaps of 'The 5 1/2 Minute Hallway'. Far out.

Constellations Volume 2

Fushara - "Nightmares On Wax" (6:12)
Fushara - "Paranoid Park" (6:10)
Ben Kei - "Spatial" (6:25)
Ben Kei - "Aperture" (6:47)
Review: The second release from Fushara & Ben Kei's Constellations imprint brings more of the very same hard-hitting beats-and-basses; we've got blissed out, edgy sci-fi-vibed synths and huge spacious atmospheres, all of which were first heard on the first released. A delightful follow-up, these track are primed for headphone listening first and foremost, despite their (in our opinion) just-as-good club-readiness. First up, 'Nightmare On Wax' delivers a string of eerie cosmic horrors - dormant xenomorphic sonic eggs on a silver platter - by way of endlessly tricky breaks variations and soulful sampled wails into the silent void that is space itself. The creep factor continues into the B, with 'Paranoid Park', taking its namesake from the bleak emo film and bringing with it an intense combination of psychotic mutterings and gourd-string tremblings; Ben Kei's contributions, meanwhile, are weightier and sparser, dare we say harder-hitting; 'Aperture' comes as the "tribal" highlight, channelling a huge sense of weight in its bass stabs and well-rounded break.

Review: The one and only Krust makes beats like no other and has been out on a class of one since the beginning. He now makes a welcome return with a fourth instalment in his Irrational Numbers series on Wonder Palace Music, which gather together the glories of his 90s output which, at the time, were spread far and wide across many of the era's finest labels. It comes across four sides of vinyl and takes in his usual deft designs an innovative rhythms from the slick but jumpy minimal of the opener to the plug-in bass depths of 'Jazz Note II' via the tightly coiled funk of 'Not Necessarily A Man'. Another doozy from the drum & bass don.

Blue Sky (5:41)
Starburst (6:34)
Frozen Tears (6:09)
Moonlit Clouds (7:25)
Review: Simon Huxtable's Aural Imbalance is one of drum & bass's most cultured projects. It's a pretty prolific one too, with great new music coming on a steady basis on labels like his own Spatial and Okrbon. It is the former he returns to now with a lush translucent blue vinyl 12", Retrospective Feelings. 'Blue Sky' is a deft mix of ambient cosmic synth work and meticulous drum patterns that suspends you in mid-air. 'Starburst' douses you in dazzling light and 'Frozen Tears' is deeper, tighter, more melancholic. 'Moonlit Clouds' is the classy closer which again pairs a lightness of rhythm and melody into something heavenly.

Review: Proper pristine, technical drum & bass here from the Transmute crew, expending far more effort than most junglists in fleshing out the body, weight and polish of each constituent sound. Mostly forgoing sampled breakbeats, the 'DUOS' EP hears refreshingly unusual sound design choices dance over a more straight-up rollage in the rhythm section(s). From the opening washer pads of Abstract Drumz & Optimystic's 'Energy To The Universe', to the closing techstep clanks of Sicknote & Escher's 'Trouble Part 2', this EP brings a variety of emotions to a gestalt whole, unified by its consistently clean production.

Review: Tommy The Cat dives deep into jungle's raw energy, blending intricate breakbeats with shadowy basslines and atmospheric layers. Rhythmic twists and evolving textures create a sound that feels both rooted in the genre's golden era and refreshingly modern. Each track unfurls with precision, drawing from jungle's tradition while introducing subtleties that reveal themselves over repeated listens. This is a sharp and sophisticated take on a genre that thrives on chaos.

Slightly Involved Vol II

Decipher (4:46)
Lust Issues (5:02)
Banshee (5:08)
Still You See (4:36)
Review: Rarely do garage and jungle ever hear any kind of fusion, but more than several perfect examples can be heard on this latest collab EP between Amy Dabbs and Coco Bryce. The second in their collaborative 'Slightly Involved' series, in which they set out to interpret each other's tracks and production techniques, the likes of 'Decipher' and 'Lust Issues' immediately pique the ears as sweet, engaging fidgeters, not backing down from the emotive swing endemic to the former genre while also playing up the pace of the latter. The A-side's listless synthetic pangs are matched in vibe by the B's comparatively by-the-book, dreamatic dolphinny junglisms, with 'Banshee' going ham on the slice-ups and 'Still You See' oscillating between string-laden suspense and light, downtown sunday-midafternoon breaks.

Patient (Coido remix)
Hold Me A Bit Longer (Ehua remix)
Divinity (Sinistarr remix)
Birth (Synkro remix)
Prayer (Itoa remix)
Review: A seamless blend of bass-driven soundscapes and emotive intricacy unfolds across this five-strong remix collection. 'Patient' is euphoric and melodic, bass music meeting orchestral beauty in a stunning interplay. Following it, Hold Me A Bit Longer (Ehua remix) sees the broken beat aesthetic exploding with jittery, cut-up keyboard edits, crafting a fragmented yet catchy rhythm, before Sinistarr's mix of 'Divinity' offers an ambient and atmospheric dive into lush, beautiful textures. Flipping to Side-2, listeners are greeted with R&S alumni Synkro offering up a downtempo version of 'Birth' that balances growling basslines and ethereal vocals, enhanced by delicate piano notes. 'Prayer' (Itoa remix) closes proceedings with a slow-churning groove, blending techno influences with inventive twists, resulting in a hypnotic and creative sonic experience.

Birth Control Pill (9:18)
Benakis (8:54)
Review: Birth Control Pill, the latest offering from Speed Dealer Moms, shows the duo's talents of making chaotic yet elegant live electronics. On the title track, they blend ruffneck drum and bass with ripping breakcore, culminating in a thrilling extratone breakdown. 'Benakis,' on the B-side, explores unconventional time signatures and intricate melodies, transitioning between breakcore and hard techno before drifting into a dreamy, beatless outro. Speed Dealer Moms, comprising John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares), navigate their own crooked road with a telepathic musical connection, resulting in their most functional and concise release yet. These fearless electronic compositions push boundaries and defy categorization, reflecting their relentless pursuit of the new.

Imo Lu - "Inhibition" (4:02)
Review: Rosebay Music presents 'Darker Flowers', a fresh V/A project showcasing four hotly-tipped new school producers, all of whom represent a hauntingly soulful drum & bass sound with class and elegance. Romanian wunderkind Azotix has been making moves recently with his ultra-clean future bangers, but here he demonstrates another side of his sound with the beautiful 'Hurt'. Styke and label boss Submorphics, meanwhile, link up in The Hague for a unique collab, 'Lonely Dub', channeling dub techno and moody film noir D&B. LO! represents Chicago with the interstitial banger 'Transition', bringing an early 2000s sound into 2024, while Imo-Lu finishes things off with the gorgeous, ye deadly bassbin rattler 'Inhibition'. Epic soundsystem music straight out of Glasgow.

Review: Java steps up as the Redskin label surges on through double figures with a new EP, Nightfall, that covers a stylish range of jungle sounds. 'Brockout' has ld school signifiers like the ragga vocal and clipped vocal yelps, but some super smooth and silky pads and a serene sense of cosmic energy. '16 Stripes' is another collision of those different worlds - deep space ambience and more warehouse-ready jungle styles complete with some nice sci-fi bleeps. Closer 'Fi Di Girls Dem' shuts down with some nice crisp breakbeats and soulful vocal touches to ignite any party.

Track 2 (5:59)
Review: Back once again, it's Ill Behaviour with yet another two pantherine jungle steamers to top up their eponymous series of black labels. With purring associative moods of a melanistic leopard on wax, 'Side A' crafts knockout jungle from mutedly distant, longing r&b samples and rampant drum snaffles, wafting a prowly energy not too far from the voracious ravishing of prey. 'Side B' goes speedier jungle techno, proving that this is no alley cat; the piano breakdown is particularly impressive, weaving successfully controlled, empirically tested vocal science chops around a well-controlled mallet melody line, one we could only too easily assume was played in by a feline philanderer.

Bow Street Runner - "Sex Tune 3" (5:30)
Lavery & Bow Street Runner - "Punani Mania" (5:08)
Lavery - "One Tune" (4:43)
Review: .The opening jam on this new EP from Sub Code has got it all - the driving breakbeats, the proper lush chords and the heart-aching r&b vocal sample, pitched up just enough. Bow Street Runner ensures they all coalesce into a standout tune that tugs at the emotions while also demanding you move your body. No wonder it's called 'Sex Tune 3.' Lavery & Bow Street Runner's 'Punani Mania' is just as super sweet with another brillaint vocal sample, tenderness in the piano chords and drive in the jungle rhythms. After that collaboration between Lavery & Bow Street Runner comes a Lavery solo 'One Tune', which is more naughty with air raid sirens, some mad mic work and warped bass filth.

Something New (4:40)
Sick Sensation (4:22)
Shockwave Sauce (5:00)
Spike Up (3:23)
Review: Freq modding, circuit-bending breakstep from rudeboy UK hardcore act Secret Squirrel (Julian Cobb), whose cheeky mixing and breaks-blending game has known few bounds since 1992. After a long hiatus after 1995, Cobb is back to put up a propulsory cyber-ragga ransom, challenging any would-be outlaw to a vicious duel. A-sider 'Something New' is playful and needle-wearing enough, but the going really gets tough on 'Sick Sensation', which plumbs eurrghy sub basses to whose frequencial lows we didn't it think possible to stoop. 'Shockwave Sauce' teases sultry rhythm & rave (sadly unabbreviable, given the vibe, to R&R) before giving way to wild cutoff-filtering chordbreak skankery. 'Spike Up' rounds things off as the sonic nail bomb and B-sider contrarian's choice.

I'm Here To Stay (7:51)
The Storm (remix) (5:42)
Review: More dark arts from the man and his machine; Dom & Roland tears 2025 a new one with four powerful drum & bass compositions. Provocative and unapologetic, 'Under The Spell' snaps the firmest of wands and does so for the best part of 10 minutes. A real hypnotic showdown. 'Re-Resistance' meanwhile takes us into much more industrial, abstract territories in a way that you might imagine Krust or Amit might. 'I'm Here To Stay' is a much more placid, spacious affair laced with lush pads and a smouldering vocal that induces euphoria at 50 paces. Complete with a tearing remix of 'The Storm', it's another essential 12" from one of d&b's most consistent artists.

Review: Mike Paradinas is a veteran producer and owner of Planet Mu but he keeps on serving up thrilling new sounds. Grush is his latest, a new album packed with energetic tracks that he hopes reclaim the "dance" element of IDM. Inspired by the melodic dance music of the genre's early pioneers, Grush blends sweetly nostalgic melodies with dynamic, road-tested rhythms. Many tracks were developed during times on the road and from the spiralling notes of 'Hyper Daddy' to the aquatic acid footwork of the title track, Grush traces Paradinas' musical journey with signature style and invention. With influences from early Black Dog to Drexciyan funk, it's a vibrant, live-inspired record that works in a wide range of contexts from the club to the sofa.

Building on the vibe he set with 2021's Radiate album, Luminous dances that fine line between pop and dance with big bright dynamics, infectious hooks and bundles of springy, sunny side euphoria. Featuring link-ups with the likes of Dan Dakota, DNMO, Hybrid Minds, Etherwood, Lottie Jones and others, vibes range from the neon turbo disco of 'Take Over' to the solemn introspective ballad 'Subliminal' via powe3rful dancefloor jams like the title track. A stately Hospital LP that does everything you want it to.

Ladder To Salvation (5:39)
Review: One of the UK's wonder-children of music production, Eusebeia, returns for a cerebral new drum & bass EP, 'Snakes & Ladders', homing in on vibes of barren atmosses and desert drumfunk. Opener 'Snakes & Ladders' is Sub-Saharan enough, opening with a bullhorned call to arms over a figurative, dust-laden sonic dune, all while a rallying 808 booms underneath like the distant underground squirms of a sandworm. Things then take an unexpected turn, however, as the producer takes brooding refuge in a nighttime cave on 'Morality Lessons', cleverly traversing an odd time signature and a nocturnal texture. 'Ladder To Salvation' embraces the desert dawn, relishing the misty morning, while 'Vice & Virtue' rounds off the B-side with an impeccable ambience and movement through several competing kettle-breaks and versions of the same atmosphere.

By far his heaviest hitting drums to date, you can feel the Function force on this one! 'Body Move' takes more of drum & bass approach with its strident piano stroke and sensual vocal - think Total Science or early Headz. Finally 'Information Overload' is a right old grizzly 95-era Bristol groaner. Rude in sonic and health. Big moves from Monsieur Clay.

Soon Forgotten (8:53)
Mainstream (7:24)
Review: At this point Okbron is a byword for the best atmospheric d&b coming out these days and while they may have drawn people in with their archival and reissue offerings, they're just as vital for platforming new music. Response & Pliskin represent the best of Manchester's d&b scene, and they've delved into a particularly mellow sound world for this release. 'Soon Forgotten' is a dreamy, subtly haunting roller with a clean, crisp beat and fulsome subs you can just float on, while 'Mainstream' deals in more layered, evolving pad tones and diced up breaks without losing that light, airy feel you want from a proper atmospheric release.

The Warpath (6:27)
Review: Mako returns with Oeuvre - Part 2, his latest record on Metalheadz, continuing the legacy of his acclaimed 2020 album Oeuvre. This 16-track collection showcases Mako's intricate production skills and deep connection to the drum and bass scene. His music remains a standout in an age where individuality often gets lost in the noise. The album features notable collaborations with long-time partners Fields, Hydro, Villem, and Mikal, alongside a special posthumous contribution from the late Marcus Intalex, adding depth and richness to the project. Tracks like 'Suspension' pays a sleek tribute to techstep, embodying Mako's versatility. "Come Closer' injects pure energy, a dancefloor anthem that has garnered praise from Goldie himself. Oeuvre Part 2 isn't just about the high-octane; it also explores reflective moments, with 'Overshare' weaving graceful melodies. This release reaffirms Mako's place as a masterful producer within the Metalheadz family.

Alpha Rhythm & Rezilient - "From The Ashes" (Etherwood remix) (4:57)
Subarctic Signal - "Subarctic Signal" (Subwave remix) (5:37)
Review: Five new elysian liquid come techfunk tracks from Rotterdam's Fokuz Recordings, the cornerstone of Dutch drum & bass since 1999. A relentlessly dreamy energy is immediately conveyed on the pragmatically named 'Remix EP', led up by Alpha Rhythm, Ritual and Rezilient with 'Venus Fly' and 'One Day At A Time' on the A-side and Etherwood, Subwave and Natus on remix duties of former releases 'From The Ashes', 'Subarctic Signal' and 'Tranquility' on the B. This is liquid drum & bass of a certain character; the handicraft is impeccable, each track giving off an ultra-sleek yet still impactful post-singularity character.

Review: Subjects is dropping not one but two EPs on the Deep Jungle label this season. He is an artist who rarely ever misses and has plenty of niche styles in his arsenal, something he proves again with this EP. 'Come With Me' opens up with a flurry of tightly programmed snares and amen breaks while 'Forever Young' that has a more whimsical synth line and tender chords softening the physical impact of the drums. It's dreamy and heartfelt stuff then closer 'Alpen' rounds out with a darting jungle rhythm awash with brain blowing drums.
