Review: New label D59B Recordings takes you on a journey through the deeper shades of electronics on their inaugural release. It's quite a mixed bag yet it still remains consistent throughout, whether it's the deep chug of Canadian Eddie C's meditative 'Winter', TCB's descent into the cosmic hole on 'Spring' or Sardinian hypnotic techno expert Claudio PRC's icy dub techno soundscape (ironically) titled 'Summer' - you will definitely experience four seasons in a day on Fall Winter Spring Summer Vol 1.

You Try (mix 2) (5:44)
Review: 3 Men Gone Mad were an independent group formed in Blackburn and Darwen in the UK. They fused electronic sounds with rock and were prolific in the 1990s when they became cult favourites amongst those who know. You Try is a much sought-after collection that has been restored by Utopia Records many years after it made its way onto John Peel's 1991 Festive 50. He heard in it a mix of The Clash, Joy Division and Talking Heads and that still rings true. The main mix has a raw energy that captures the angst of Britain at the time - and still today, frankly. A spaced-out dub brings a fresh feeling of euphoria and an extended B-side mix draws out this record's undeniable pleasures.

Review: First played by Gilles Peterson, "Morning Child" is part disco, part neo-soul and part musical. It has a cinematic opening and the mythical voice of Carina Anderson. The b-side is a hot, soulful r&b styled track with the voice of US sensation J Davey. This is an essential 4 Hero release.

Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: The always adventurous Especial label is back on its world travels once more for another cultured EP, this time from Jonne Lyden aka 53X. This is a widescreen bass exploration with trance-tinged steppas looking firmly to the future from the Finnish-born artist. He has a background in punk bands but a trip to Berlin turned his ear and now he makes experimental fusions that draw on everything from industrial to Berghain to Detroit for inspiration. His tunes are mostly started out as live jams and then edited into what we have here - club-ready sounds, rich atmospherics, acid, breaks and hypnotic rhythms.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Anyone could be forgiven for already tiring of the 'recorded during the pandemic' back story, but our money is on the fact we've barely scratched the surface of what was and still is being made in and among isolation, paranoia, and social awkwardness. In this case, though, the setting is relevant for more reasons than lyrical themes and catalysts alone, with A Mountain of One managing to record this latest track over Skype, Mo Morris checking in from Bali and Zeben Jameson in London.

The process is as unique as the track itself, which is all we ever expected from A Mountain. It's melodic without being twee, adventurous without running off into such obscure soundscapes the listener is left wondering about their taxi home. It's half standing in the electronic ultra world outfits like The Orb took us to, and yet firmly placed in the live alt-rock-pop-whatever realm. It's special stuff.

Review: A Mountain of One pair off in a versus battle with dub maestro and longtime studio wizard Dennis Bovell for new dub versions of 'Custard's Last Stand.' This is the first new music from A Mountain of One in a decade and it marks the inaugural release on their new AMORE label. This tune was recorded over Skype during the pandemic and shows that the pairing of Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson and have lost nothing since we last heard from them - it is snaking atmospheric, deep dub with plenty of heady pads and cinematic designs. Review: The Avidya label arrives with a bold new concept that sees it push itself to "step out of comfort zones to release a series of EPs of broad, challenging and deep music." The first affair is a fine one from four artists, the first of which is Lyon based procure A Strange Wedding from the Worst label. Review: .Mikhail Khvasko has been painting a vivid, sunkissed picture of Balearic bliss with his A Vision Of Panorama project since it first emerged on Mellophonia back in 2016. As the nights start to draw in, this latest drop is just what you need to escape to an imagined coastal idyll where the sun never sets. From the steady groove of 'Floral Rhythm' to the gentle skank of 'Seaside Tune' this is immaculately rendered feel-good music rendered in plush synths with an unmistakable 80s finish. There are beats to be enjoyed on 'Blues 909', but you've never heard the totemic techno machine sound as smooth and mellow as it does right here.

Review: Welcome to the dusty white sands of Balearic Russia. After their breakthrough release on Mellophonia earlier this year, A Vision Of Panorama make their wax debut on Manchester's Aficionado. Luxury synth work a la mid 80s, if you didn't know any better, these four originals have been unearthed in a secret vault Jan Hammer didn't know he had. From the gentle melodic bobbing and major key overlays of "Cascade" to the languishing star-gazing allure of "Solar Eclipse" via the liquid-like woodblock rhythm of "Southern Breeze", each one of these will whisk you somewhere warm in seconds. For a more modern, dubbier disco touch jump on Andras's remix of "Time Capsule". Bliss.

Review: Depending on where you stand, Virgil Abloh is either the ruiner of fashion, or its saviour. The Off-White founder doesn't exactly have a subtle style when it comes to his own brand, but that hasn't stopped him making it to the high profile position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton. He is also more and more involved with music on various levels and that now plays out with his new single with serpentwithfeet. It is presented here on both sides of this Sony 7" following his recent remix of Mercury Award winner Michael Kiwanuka's 'Solid Ground'.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.

Review: The most famous whistler in cinema (so arguably the most famous whistler in the world), Alessandro Alessandroni has contributed to cinema, TV and music with as much influence as his old friend and collaborator Ennio Morricone. He was also making some incredibly innovative electronic compositions on the side, it would seem... These four variations were found in an old archive in his African home and have never, before now, been heard before. From the densely-layered spaghetti-flavoured "Afro Voodoo" to the soft sultry swoons of "Afro Sentiment" by way of the sheer dancefloor pump of "Afro Discoteca", this is a truly remarkable find for Four Flies. Made all the more poignant due to his recent passing, too. You know what to do.

Ask Ives (5:17)
Review: Baldini Records is a brand new edit-centric imprint out of Naples inspired, you might guess correctly, by the legendary DJ, producer and cosmic house innovator Alessandro Baldini. It kicks off with two disco versions that he would surely be happy to reach for. They come from Alex From Utopia - he is a party impresario and a so-called DJ's DJ. Both of these have already been getting plenty of high-profile plays from the likes of Lovefingers, Jonny Rock and Ivan Smagge. 'Story Of Devotion' has a proto-deep house feel to it with nice analogue drums and a silky vocal, while 'Ask Ives' is slower and more psyched out.

The soundtrack to the perfect sunset, this gradually builds with the most genuine euphoria that could possibly be mustered in a studio. For a proper dancefloor jolt, jump on Marius Circus's dub... Boma (6:55)
Review: New to Claremont but certainly not new to composing; Denis Leonvich has been writing for screen for over a decade and has amassed an impressive collection of heavier floor friendly cuts on the likes of National Techno. If these two rather warm and woozy Balearic debuts are anything to go by, his future cosmic output will be just as impressive; "Sunset Sparks" sways with a balmy mysticism with folk singing, an alluring hang drum and hazy pads while "Boma" takes a slightly darker route with psych sinewy arpeggios and a subtle but unforgettable brassy bass texture and sleazy guitar plucks. We look forward to Alterleo's next adventures...

Review: Operative for the latter half of the 1990s, Japanese outfit Ambient7 were a unique proposition: a trio made up of two synthesiser buffs and a saxophonist whose immersive, life-affirming aural explorations frequently blurred boundaries between ambient, softly spun Balearic house, ambient techno, IDM and field recordings-laden soundscapes. This excellent retrospective from re:discovery offers an excellent introduction to their sound, with the five selected tracks being drawn from their three albums. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the melodious, spacey, soft-touch shuffle of 'Escape', the chords-and-saxophone bliss of 'Epilogue', the bubbly and hypnotic ambient techno pulse of 'Deep Sea' and the sunrise-ready wonder that is gorgeous closing cut 'Orange Sunshine'.

Review: It's good to have this one available again. Dorothy Moore's 1976 soul classic, featuring vocals from Taka Boom, Chaka Khan & Mark Stevens, 'Misty Blue' became an Ibiza chill-out anthem in 2002. As 'Misti Blu' it got high-profile plays by Mary Anne Hobbs, Pete Tong and Mixmaster Morris and even David Mancuso charted in his end-of-year highlights. Now the sundown gem gets reissued here on a tidy 7" as a superb rework from Claude Money. The crooning vocals remain the highlight with sultry trumpets and lavish downtempo rhythms. What's more, we're told that a new live disco and house version are also to come this year.

Review: The second release from Analogik takes the listener to new territories of genre breaking music. A combination of electronica, waltz and dub makes this release a very enjoyable pearl. Three very different tracks bring good mood and danceable vibes, while the remix by Karsten Pflum really entertains the listener. Kringle's catchy melody sticks on the mind for a long time. Fransk Lysettewaltz must be the first steps into a new genre called nu-waltz, with an underlying western guitar and klick beat. Hov is a collaboration between Analogik and the Danish reggae act Bo Marley, the fusion becomes an Analogik dub. Analogik's first EP on Auditorydesigns' "So Many Musicians" was played by numerous of DJs, to name a few, Gaudi, Steve Harvey and DJ Seb (Chillosophy Music and Ooze.) The new tracks are a taste of their first full length album, called Søens Folk (in English it means seafarers), that will be released on Auditorydesigns this summer.

This time around the project gets a serious disco treatment from Ray Mang, who stretches "Don't Stop" out across the A side for a nine minute pleasure ride that's heavy on the funk. "Kano Line Dance" kicks off the B side in another loose and nasty party jam, before the original Philly string busting brilliance of "Don't Stop" completes the set in fabulous fashion.

The results of their research stemmed from a shared passion for dub, dancehall and its infinite variations, combined with a particular attention to subtle and harmonious sound textures. People (live)
Review: The EP is based around the lead track, "People" - a hypnotic, slow-lumbering roller that builds purposefully around a haze of shimmering guitar and piano, a see-sawing (almost Fall-like) bass riff, scuttling percussion, and dubby explosions. With little in the way of vocal lines, Avey Tare's voice is instead utilised in a series of simplistic chanted affirmations, yelps and screams. "People" is followed up by "Tikwid" - a quirky, upbeat live favourite that motors on rollercoaster piano, cartoonish sampled squelches, bustling drum stabs and a runaway vocal chorus. It's another killer track that sounds like nothing else and fits snugly alongside the likes of "Grass" or "The Purple Bottle". The brief spectre of "My Favorite Colors" conjures a haze of processed, haunted ballroom vocal warbles and slurred laughter, whilst the EP ends on a live recording of "People" - recorded in Boston on the band's US tour in march 2005, just prior to the recording of "Feels". Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources without ever being reducible to a list of influences, Animal Collective are making challenging modern pop - music that defies easy classification or lazy pigeonholing. The mixture of electronics and traditional instrumentation, of song form and soundscape are integrated brilliantly and totally convincingly into a coherent, logical whole. Bubbling, rippling instrumental playing coheres into fluid song structures that seem to swell and ebb, building a throbbing, shimmering wall of sound.

Review: Animal Collective return with a revised and enhanced 'Grass' DVD/CD, featuring a bonus disc of four videos (two brand new), in support of their forthcoming UK tour dates and festival appearances. The last 2 years have seen the momentum snowballing for this band, culminating with widespread critical acclaim for last year's 'Feels' album. Further promotion will take place around this release and tour dates, building upon the album press which culminated in the NME coming on board with a half page live feature and Paul Morley from The Telegraph placing the band in the same canon of classic leftfield US rock bands such as Captain Beefheart, Mercury Rev, et al. Electrified, denser and rhythmically more urgent than previous work, 'Grass' shows Animal Collective to be one of the most ambitious and forward-thinking modern bands - uncompromising yet somehow effortlessly accessible, bringing to mind the likes of The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Super Furry Animals, or The Arcade Fire.

It's certainly well worthy of the reissue treatment - copies of the 2019 seven-inch now change hands for significant amounts online - and this edition also boasts two new mixes. The two produces haven't put out countless releases, but what they have produced has been much to our liking, and always present on the best independent labels out there. This new single from the duo, the ambiguously named "Dish", is the perfect hybrid, a tune that sits somewhere between house and electronica, but the mid-point is beautifully lo-fi in its approach, making this fall under the umbrella terms of 'balearic'. The vocals of the A-side are absolutely non-intrusive and, in fact, add to the charm and charisma of the harmonies locked tightly into this majestic tribal groove; you can imagine how perfectly lush the dub version sounds. This is a true tip, if we ever heard one!

Down That Road (6:45)
Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

Review: Roh!s Records is a Sardinian record label based in Berlin, founded by Andrea Porcu in late 2007. Between 2007 and 2016 the label moved to different countries such as Belgium. They offer a much needed re-issue of Tetsuya Nakamura aka Arc Of Doves' 2014 album "Never Let Me Go" which features emotive piano lines gently floating triumphantly above sharp breakbeats and providing a wonderful contrast. On the flip "Wish You Were Here" is more sombre and mellow, showcasing more of Nakamura's expressive piano skills.

Event Horizon
Event Horizon (Beneath The Photonsphere)
Review: EP includes exclusive full length tracks and EP exclusive full length and instrumental versions. Linked with both Drexcyian and Dopplereffekt camps, no one really knows for sure who Arpanet is. Following on from their mighty "Wireless Internet" on Record Makers set a couple of years back and 2d " Quantum Transposition " on Rephlex in 2005, this album for Record Makers develops their conceptual electronic fragmentation into yet another evocative and mysterious strand of sub-marine electro. Though "Inertial Frame" serves the usual amount of killer loops, mysterious percussive treads and midnight melodies, Arpanet returns here for our greatest joy with Beats and a whole bunch of fully sung tracks. An instantly recognizable tapestry of Motor City soundscaping updated from the most seminal of archives, "Inertial Frame" talks the listener into derivative reflections on quantum physics and pays tribute to the works of the great scientists of the 20th century.

So Deep (4:03)

Review: In some circles, Arvo's 1984 album Luna is considered something of a lost synth-pop classic. It was unarguably the high point of Arvo's career, with the album's two most lauded tracks - "Bikini" and "So Deep" - remaining popular with dusty-fingered Balearic beards. Here those two tracks are given the reissue treatment by New Zealand imprint Strangelove Music. You'll find the breezy, stylish and largely slo-mo original versions on the A-side, with fresh reworks on the flip. First, French producer Shelter does a brilliant job in extending "Bikini", wisely extending the dreamy first section and making more of the Brazilian-influenced synthesizer motifs, before Aussie Italo-disco digger Hysteric delivers a head-nodding instrumental take on "So Deep" that's worth the entrance price on its own.

Solemnity
Fulcrum
Wave Upon Wave
Lone Star
Review: Auxiliary boss and audio adventurer ASC invites us to get with the "Programme" as he lays down four beautiful compositions that flitter around the idea of concept of drum & bass while remaining wholly unclassifiable and sprung with surprise. "Solemnity" is a beat heavy trip into the cosmos, all crumpled beats and icy textures. "Fulcrum", meanwhile, casts a much dreamier, mesmerising effect thanks to rippling synths and breath-taking washes. "Wave Upon Wave" has a touch of the Vangelis about it; cinematic, wistful and star-gazing, it's full of emotion. "Lone Star" closes the show with the most D&B flavoured track on the EP; the breakbeats cascade delicately in the background while pianos weave in and out of the mix, held in place by ambient pads.

Atypic - "Otaku" (10:20)
Anaconda - "Ideas For Virtual Reality" (8:57)
Review: ATYPIC and Anaconda's 'Princess P Presents' showcases a mesmerising fusion of electronic beats and hypnotic rhythms that have been mastered at half speed. 'Otaku' goes first and is a languid and loose rhythm with worldly synth charms and gently tribal overtones as a warped baseline brings some trippiness below. On Anaconda's 'Ideas For Virtual Reality,' you are sunken even more into liquid grooves with nice molten cosmic chords and starry keys ranging down. It's deep, echoes the best of Detroit's machine soul. The sort of track it's very easy to get lost in.

Review: Audio Research council is a new alias from an artists who also works as Anderson, Audio Reflex and Kineticat, amongst other aliases. Studies 1 is the first album form the project and it comes on Wex, steeped in dub, techno, acid and house. After an opening track that sinks you into gurgling and out there synth modulations, 'Predictions' is a lush bit of throwback downtempo with leggy drum work. There is crispy electro-techno on 'ARC Anthem' and 'Proven Method' then brings new age breaks and tropical sound effects before to closing tunes explore mystic tribal acid and gurgling dub techno. It plays out like a perfectly distilled DJ set, too.

Waiting For Beggi
Review: First surfacing on Leng late last year, the Auf Togo pairing of Fabulous Penetrators bassist Clement Cachot-Coulom and Sasa Crnobrnja of In Flagranti repute was one of the less expected collaborations. Nonetheless their Second Left 12" was a delight, discarding with the heavily edited smutty disco that Crnobrnja pioneered with In Flagranti in favour of a rich Balearic sound that felt at times like the results of Tame Impala recording after a week camped out in an Amsterdam coffee shop. It's great to see them back on the Leng label with more Auf Togo, with lead track "Old Models" adding some cooing vocals into the mix over a taut, tight and warm Gallic disco groove. On the flip "Waiting For Beggi" retains the upbeat tempo but the mood is hazily Balearic and the bassline sumptuous.

Second Left
Member Talk
Review: Sometimes curious pairings result in the most delightful of music, the much missed Von Sudenfed project from Mark E Smith and Mouse On Mars being one such example. We're not sure exactly where In Flagranti's Sasa Crnobrnja met Clement Cachot-Coulom from the Fabulous Penetrators, we'd like to think at a vintage pornography fair, but their work together as Auf Togo sounds like the most promising of pairings on the basis of Second Left, this debut two track release for the Leng label. There's a melancholic air present in both the lead track and flipside accompaniment "Member Talk" that's vaguely reminiscent at times of 60s West Coast stoner rock and other times the kind currently being peddled (with real success) by Tame Impala but it's channelled brilliantly through a real understanding of the rhythms of disco and filtered with loving saturation.

The Soniferous Garden (14:12)
Rainfall On Red Earth (16:06)
Review: Auntie Flo's Huntleys & Palmers residency in London has helped the artist to both mature his sound as a producer, and get his name across to a vast house audience looking for good vibes. And it's with these sorts of release that they've found it. The man is back but this time for the incorrigible Sofrito, who are branching out with this new Super Singles subsidiary imprint, mashing up contemporary dance with something veritably tropical. "The Soniferous Garden" is an excellent warm-up tune, or the sort of groove you stick on to send your audience left of field, thanks to its slow, chuggy groove, gorgeous instrumentation, and subtle Afro lyricism. "Rainfall On Red Earth" travels at a similar tempo, except that here the mood has grown more pensive, and Auntie Flo offers another stunning piece of music that is perfect for both dancing or straight-up vibing.

Just Friends (Shlohmo remix)
Review: Avalanche are none other than the talented Nicolas Jaar and Sasha Spielberg, who have decided to embark on a new project spanning downtempo, modern classical and ambient all wrapped up in a gorgeous shade of house. "Just Friends" is a mesmerising, slow-tempo excursion across crackling beats and mild atmospherics with a folky edge. There's two fine remixers on the go, with Rvng International's Julia Holter delivering a more cinematic beatless version, and Henry Laufer aka Shlohmo going for a broken, future bass kinda vibe on his re-interpretation of the tune. A wonderfully enchanting twenty minutes of electronic psychedelia.
