Trixie - "Restless Sculptures"
Review: Mental health charity label Serenity keeps it sophisticated with its sixth outing and once again donates all proceeds to charity this time Young Minds. It is underground house mainstay and DiY Discs legend Nail who steps up first with a much more breezy and balmy sound than you would expect but it sure is lush. 'Pad On' slips into his more usual and driving house sound but with swirling pads up top for summery refinement. Trixie, Connor Male & Thoma Bulwer then get deep and late night with their punchy 'Impromptune' while Trixie's solo cut 'restless sculptures' is a jacked-up and percussive number that leans into techno.

Review: 'Ascension' is the dramatic new techno EP from Riccardo De Polo, and a worthy addition to the discog born of Frankfurt's Cocoon Recordings crew. Though just three contrasting suites of airlocked and airborne ambiences come kick-pummellings, 'Ascension' bedazzles with its ability to evoke the theme of space exploration despite not ever uttering a word. Opener 'Ascension' is a fine exposition of alien smoke-outs and ambient bursts of gas, while follow-ups 'Wahnstimmung' and 'Inception' are the more danceable meats on the bone; cortical jams for intelligent exo-lifeforms.

Cu O Voce (Ted Amber remix)
Review: Floog continues to offer up a playful strain of minimal techno which now finds a home on a new label called Dreams Come True. If you're always searching for those cool and deadly, sexy vocal minimal joints which inject some sass into a long-trucking DJ set you're going to be all over 'Piesa Cu Story', which takes a soulful female vocal lick and builds a slinky, moody groove around. Antraum then shifts the key of the track and adds some trippy shimmer for a perfect after Horus remix. 'Cu O Voce' on the flip is again charged by a strong vocal sample, but here the production is a more bubbling, acid-speckled confection perfect for a late night brain massage, which Ted Amber dutifully buffs into a pinging freak-out for a spicier kind of dancefloor.

Review: London-based Lewi Boome brings his class to this new release on Well Street, strictly limited to just 100 copies so you better act fast! 'Dust Devil' opens with a deft touch - the pinging synth lines and airy drum loops suspending you in a tripped-out world of futurism. That cerebral style continues through the lithe and elegant, dubbed-out rhythms of 'Etched Alive' and the more unsettling moods of jungle-techno cut 'Tumble', complete with distant bird calls and humid pads. 'Deep Shear' rounds out with a little more low-end grit as the fourth and final cut on a superb EP.

The Passion (original 1993 version)
Review: Technohead were a married couple of Lee Newman and Michael Wells who also famously recorded under the other names Greater than One (GTO), Tricky Disco, Signs of Chaos and Church of Extacy, They were well known in the late 80s and early 90s for their raw techno and rave tunes that explored every genre in the electronic dance kaleidoscope from Gabber to ambient music, even scoring a UK number one single with the warwormy pop gabba of 'I Want To Be A Hippy'. In 1993, their hardcore hit 'Passion' was a huge success. Now, a little more than 30 years later, German veteran Thomas Schumacher updates the track into another anthem worth checking out. Whichever side you choose, expect this slice of techno history to reign over the dancefloor. An unforgettable tune.

Review: Named after the classic Czech sci-fi animated film of the same name, veteran producer DIN returns as the nextmost focus of the Coming From Returning To label, who offer up a fresh reissue of his 1992 techno classic. Then five good years into the alias (DIN was formed in 1987), producer Pupka Frey began making his distinct brand of electro-disko as a personal exploration of futuristic and analog dance textures. This EP is an 'artificial' alt soundtrack to the movie, which was otherwise histrionic and over-funky for the tastes of most techno enjoyers. Highlights here have got to be the glassy 'B-Minis' and the opening 'Travesty' (the tune's ironically anything but).

Review: Viels returns with Il Quarto Respiro, an immersive journey into the depths of techno. Released on Semantica, Viels' explores a range of sounds and atmospheres. Highlights included on the first side, 'Alienazione,; a percussive powerhouse that delivers metallic textures and driving rhythms, setting a formidable tone. 'Collasso Mentale' takes listeners on a journey through outer space with its sci-fi-inspired soundscape, evoking a sense of sinister alienation that permeates the track, On the flip side, 'Nuvole Bianche' continues the exploration of outer space, enveloping listeners in a mysterious and otherworldly atmosphere. The track's wicked undertones and alien textures create an intense sonic experience that captivates the imagination. Closing the album is 'Lontano Da Casa,' a heavily intense audio punishment that pushes the boundaries of techno with its pulsating beats and hypnotic rhythms. Viels demonstrates his ability to create tension and energy, leaving listeners spellbound until the very last beat.

Review: After a couple of hot and heavy drops from Nuclear Waster on Unusual Systems sub label Impakto, it's the turn of Jacky Meurisse Project to bring the energy with some muscular workouts which split the difference between house-spirited sass and ominous techno pressure. The MIDI brass weaving through 'Diskoteka' gives a little warmth to an otherwise imposing workout, while 'Crystal (Dub Mix)' leans in on crunchy synths with an industrial feel. 'In Da Place' revels in unabashed Goa trance lead lines which will go down a storm with any contemporary dance party, and 'Are You Real?' turns back towards that housey thump thanks to an addictive DX7 organ bassline primed for maximum satisfaction.

Following a superbly lo-fi, blue-tinted deep dubstep and garage mix offered to the label less than a year ago, she here returns to the fore with four fantastic new ones tailored for both systems and system heads. Highlights among the bunch include the dizzying, breaksy loss of sonic motor control that is 'Shackout' and the nighttimey, post-dark-garage 4x4 hardcore number 'Stomping Ground'. Closer 'Burn & Heal' rounds the whole thing out on a maximally intense jump-up jungle mastication.

Review: Hyperdrive's label debut was a biggie that brought together old and new-school techno on one fizzing EP. The follow-up comes soon after and this time makes no bones about being a Rave Revival. Anthrophia's 'The Voice' kicks off with what is a hefty breakbeat cut with edgy rave stabs and slamming bass. Dimension 23 - 'Fascination' (Seb G mix) then takes a more stripped-back approach with turbocharged synths layered up over silky drums. Centuras brings plenty of bright, euphoric prog energy to the urgent drum funk of 'Jizz' and last of all Dimension 23's 'The Eagle' then kicks out more dusty old-school breaks with machine gun synth fire. A potent EP, make no mistake.

Review: ...wear it. Words and sounds to live by from Livity Sounds' DJ Polo, who lays down four new ones for the esteemed Bristol dance label. Echoing labelmate Ploy's latest output and verging on the tupletting sounds of broken beat and batida, we'd wager lead track 'If The Glove Fits' is a coded nod to the similarly named Hackney nightclub; opener 'Bloodhound', meanwhile, veers towards gqom with its underground pounds and breathy 'haah's. 'Burndown' gets chuggier and less merciful with things and is probably the peaktime tune of the bunch.

There has been just five EPs over five years but in that time he has honed in on a fine signature sound and plenty of them have become underground hits. All four of these cuts are full-throttle, sweat-inducing bangers with kinetic drum programming and lithe synth work. He was a 90s trance icon who here serves up some tunes that have previously only been available digitally. They were all recorded to tape and remixed and live dubbed on the desk so have an authentic feel to the melon twisting sounds. More normally known for this smooth and seductive deep house and techno sounds, here he presents Soulmate which is about much more edgy and textural techno stompers. 'Filter' comes as two mixes. Review: Locked In Records delivers a dynamic EP with The Amigos, showcasing the talents of Andy Somoza and Juaan across four stellar but very different techno tracks. On Side 1, Andy Somoza sets the tone with 'Disperso,' a homage to the Dutch techno sound of 1991, complete with a Technotronic-inspired bassline that infuses the track with playful energy. '5Am' follows suit with its heavy early 90s bassline and infectious groove, enhanced by retro vocal samples that add an extra layer of nostalgia. Flipping over to Side 2, Juaan takes the reins with 'Waita,' offering an eerie and atmospheric journey characterized by its late-night spooky melody. 'Mi Partner' rounds out the EP with a moodier, more melodic vibe, evoking a sense of chill-out ambiance while still maintaining its techno edge. Each side of this record offers its own unique flavour making this a very versatile record.

'I Say' (part 2) is a seriously silky deep house with wispy and liquid chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as the persuasive drums get you into the groove. 'Improvisation' is a more crisp tech cut but is still unhurried and detailed with nice deft synth curlicues and the trio of escapist gems is completed with 'TRAP'. This one again sinks you into a pillowy and gentle groove with muted chords drifting up top like clouds.

Review: Ellen Allien remains at the top of her game for big, pounding Berlin techno with a deviant edge, and that’s no more apparent than on ‘Rave Luv’. Chopping up vocals and messing with the synth shapes, she proves that just a few tweaks can take a tried and tested formula into wild and weird new territory, which is why she’s such a vital artist after all these years. Backing up that consummate A side is ‘Lust’, a more melancholic affair balancing menacing undercurrents with mournful melodics in the middle distance, strapped, of course, to a 4/4 beat.

Review: Split #2 presents a riveting showcase of techno talent from NE and Elias Sternin, delivering four tracks brimming with dynamic energy and driving beats. On Side-1, NE starts with 'Procrastination,' blending techno and electro elements seamlessly, supported by an acid line that adds a futuristic edge to the track. 'Lostrack' follows suit with its commanding presence, anchored by a strong techno foundation and bolstered by a serious acid motif. Flipping to Side2, Elias Sternin takes the reins with 'Dirty Spring,' a mysterious and atmospheric journey characterized by its building tension and expansive synth lines, creating a retro movie soundtrack of sorts. Closing the EP with 'Falso,' Sternin introduces elements of psy trance, infusing the track with pulsating rhythms and hypnotic textures that elevate it. Even though each track is of the more serious nature, there is a tongue in cheek 80's vibe that makes them come across as fun pieces of techno music.

Review: Lukid and Tapes are on a proper roll with Rezzett at the moment, following up on a knockout 2023 on The Trilogy Tapes with this self-released clutch of weirdo techno-not-techno nuggets from the outer reaches. There's distortion in abundance, and a laissez faire approach to soundsystem impact in favour of textural, atmospheric sculpting. It's dripping with intention even as it stumbles inquisitively from one lo-fi tweak to the next, sounding utterly inspired and delightfully unhinged in equal measure. What's most important is the melodic warmth which peeks through the noise, edging this above the usual murk associated with noise-doused electronics.

Review: Artificial Owl Recordings welcomes aboard New Yorkers Satoshi Tomiie and Naotake Gunji for the label's fifth release; a recording of their collaborative A_A project and live show, which first came to light at the Fridman Gallery in Manhattan. A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

Review: No-nonsense fast techno jank from the Netherlands' Jsprv35. 'Tar V35' could take its name from anything from a newly discovered exoplanet to an industrial strength vacuum cleaner at the design and prototyping stage; clearly, it's not the nominal content but the sonic form that this record takes that makes it so beguiling. 'Pacific', 'Pimp', 'Prolix' and 'Retry' are like murderous factor-colossi gone rogue; their many-limbed, many-belted extensions firing off in all directions as they slowly, but repetitiously and surely gain sentience. Only the tricksy final track is any let-up, although even it functions as a worthy underfloor-heater in its own right.

Review: Falko Brocksieper is a cult German minimalist who was favoured by the likes of Craig Richards and his Tyrant project. This new EP from 20/20 Vision takes a deep dive into his back catalogue to unearth a gem that first arrived via Treibstoff Recordings almost 20 years ago in 2006. 'Frantic Formula' is a nice liquid cut with wispy sci-fi pads and rolling grooves for early evening warm-ups, while 'Outrun' gets more upright with its jumbled drum loops and gurgling bass. 'Covert Action' is another masterfully languid and elastic rhythm that layers up cowbells, wobbly low ends and silky loops that soon lock you into the groove. A welcome remaster and reissue for sure.

On the first side, Jucid's 'Essential To Our Life' is a futuristic and energetic synth heavy techno track that is sure to keep the crowd pumped up. Zuul's 'Are You Neutralised?' adds a bit of mysteriousness and drama to this sci-fi novel soundtrack. For the second side, Desiree Falessi's 'Electro Samurai' offers a dramatic 80s tinged techno sound complete with the perfect amount of tech while Boheme's 'Spiral' wraps up the EP with another science fiction track that adds some fun to the sound. The title track, sets the stage with its perfect blend of pounding techno rhythms and retro rave elements. 'Magma Driver' delves into darker territories, with menacing undertones and edgy motifs that keep the tension palpable. Its driving force and gritty textures make it a standout track for those craving a more intense sonic experience. On Side 2, 'Ambivalence' introduces industrial sounds into the mix, weaving them together with broken beats to create a futuristic soundscape that's both ominous and intriguing. Anderson's 'Sweet Psylow' kicks off with some psychedelic synth loops over crisp tech house drums that hark back to the 90s prog heyday. HearThuG's 'Back To The Future' is a darker sound with whistles, snappy snares and eerie chords and Luis Malon & Seb G then combine for the bouncing techno rhythms and acid-laced pads of 'Extasis Nebular.' Review: Oscuro Femenino is the first release for both Desiree Falessi and Influencia Records, an EP is blending of up-tempo styles like electro, techno and trance. 'Inaccesible' is a powerful, driving, keyboard driven anthem, te main synth line harkening back to classic electroclash of the late 90s - think International Deejay Gigolo Records - with a darker, new wave underlying influence as well. 'Desmadre' is more of an 80s influenced electro that has more of a street breakbeat to it but still sounds fresh and new. For the second side, 'Matrix Dance' is primed for dancefloor destruction. This very catchy track builds to a dramatic crescendo. Lastly, 'I've Been Watching U' ends the record on perhaps our favorite of the bunch. This spacey track finely walks the line between electro and breaks while the bassline draws you closer in. Overall, a great debut dance record for this artist and label! Dream Body (Lucid mix)
Review: De La Isla EP marks a compelling debut for Espíritu Recordings, showcasing Dojo Zone's versatile production prowess across five tracks. 'Dream Body (Exotica Mix)' kicks off with a potent blend of techno and progressive house, a dynamic journey through pulsating beats and twisted mood swings. 'Houdini Hauz' follows suit, infusing 80s-inspired sounds into a modern tech house, resulting in a groove-laden sonic landscape reminiscent of new wave aesthetics. The EP takes a detour with 'Obscure Entrance,' paying homage to Detroit's rhythmic heritage with its bubbling acid lines and 808 state-esque sounds. 'Bandu Bandu' is another goodie, that ventures deeper into the realms of futurism, with its serious and contemplative tones layered over intricate textures, offering a profound listening experience. Dojo Zone's masterful fusion of retro influences with contemporary production techniques makes this inaugural release from Espíritu Recordings a promising start for the label, setting high expectations for future endeavors.

Review: Hydraulix Records continues to push the boundaries of ravey techno with Va03, a four-track EP that transports listeners back to the early '90s warehouse scene with its infectious energy and relentless beats. Side 1 kicks off with Acerbic's 'Deep In Your Mind,' a heavy sci-fi pounder that channels the essence of early '90s techno rave vibes. With nods to the big Belgium sounds and a prominent Hoover sound, this track is an instant banger that commands attention on the dancefloor. Following suit, Minor Dott's 'What You Callin Acid' delivers a menacing and sinister atmosphere, characterized by its mechanical and demonic undertones. It's a track that exudes raw power and intensity, perfect for those craving an adrenaline-fueled sonic experience. On Side 2, Andreas Kraemer & Shadym team up to bring us 'Reflect,' a percussive and loopy journey through hardcore rave sounds. The track pulsates with energy, immersing listeners in a hypnotic groove that's impossible to resist. Finishing things are Dave The Drummer & Phil Kershaw's 'Bassline Sunset,' a big room rave techno anthem that hits all the right notes. With its infectious bassline and euphoric atmosphere, this track is destined to ignite dancefloors worldwide. Each track on this EP offers a unique sonic experience, making it a must-have for fans of the early 90s rave scene.

Review: Set phasers to rave, Planet Rhythm are at the controls and they're aiming squarely at the apex of the party. 'Street' draws for a much-loved hip-hop sample and straps it to some classic rave stabs and a thumping slab of 4/4 pressure that will whip a crowd into a frenzy. 'Our House' has its own iconic sample to lift, but the bouncing swing of the drums and freaky synth lines are all new and primed to set the party off good and proper. 'Rhythm Blaster' has a dirty electro demeanour to it, while 'Acid Party' unsurprisingly features some nasty 303 action strapped to a complement of deft breakbeats.

Review: Anna Wall has been making moves for a while now and has released a wide range of sounds on some top labels. She has finally decided to go it alone as she launches her own self-titled outlet here with a new two-track 12" of blistering and club-ready sounds. 'Escape Velocity' is a punchy number that will enliven any floor with its bold bass notes and prickly acid lines screwing throughout the mix as the snappy drums keep things moving. On the flip, takes a slightly different path with fulsome tech house, dubbed out low ends and nagging leads that rise up through them and towards the cosmos. Very effective stuff.

Review: Techno veteran Rico Puestel is back with a new album that tries to answer the question 'If Techno has left the building, what is actually left of it?' The original sessions for this music also gave rise to the first album in this series but now get offered up as 'The Aftermath.' They find Rico tapping into pure body music, 90s techno and hefty club sounds that unfold on chunky, physical rhythms with all manner of tripped-out, industrial, dark and deft sound designs and rusty synths up top. Proper techno for proper clubs.

techno in keeping with previous entrants on the label like The Analogue Cops and Qasio. 'Out Of

Review: Polarity keeps on the early pressure and quality it has shown over its first few releases with another searing EP that is aimed square at the floor. A quarter of different artists contribute to the '4 Intense Stories EP' and Giuseppe Angeloro opens up in bristling fashion with 'Sequenza Libera' a coarse acid workout. Cedric Dekowski's 'Roayal' has a more trippy take on techno with its unusual sci-fi energy and Luca Piermattei's 'Aerial Silk' has you in freefall as the synth sequences ride up and down the scale over mechanical beats. Thilo Dietrich shits down with a nice techno stomper with plenty of warped lines.

Review: Baby Ford is back being reissued again and we couldn't be happier about it. Few have ever matched the matter levels he achieved when it comes to deep minimal and tech house fusions. This latest on his own Trelik takes the form of three classic cuts from two much sought-after EPs - Built In and All That Nothing. The title cut is a shimmering and sublime fusion of rubbing low ends and icy hi-hats. 'All That Nothing' then picks up the pace with more dub influences and swaying drums and 'Plaza' has a tech house edge that makes for more driving grooves.

Review: Most of the time you expect Terence Fixmer to deliver a steely strain of techno which reliably moves monolithic crowds in any temple you care to mention, but on this album for Novamute he's purposefully opened his palette to the EBM and industrial sounds which sparked his imagination as a teenager. It's instantly apparent on the abrasive jackhammer sonics of opening track 'Test of the Times', while 'In Synthesis' comes on with the sort of tough but sexy arpeggios you'd readily associate with Nitzer Ebb or Front 242. There's still a dancefloor functionality in these tracks, but pure techno is not the order of the day, and the results are thrilling from start to finish.
