Review: Originally released in 1996, Aphex Twin's fifth album in as many years meant business from the very moment the wild and whimsical opener "4" scribbled it way through the speakers. With jaunty jams such as "Cornish Acid" and "Fingerbib" running amok mid-set, Richard D James Album acted as a fine mission statement to expect the unexpected and never anticipate formula or form. And it still carries that very same message today. Essential.

Review: For fans of minimal wave and DIY electronic pop, Oppenheimer Analysis's self-released 1982 debut cassette, New Mexico - little more than an extended demo cassette - has become something of a collector's item. While it has been reissued digitally since, it never received a vinyl release. In tribute to Martin Lloyd (the other half of the duo, alongside Andy Oppenheimer), who passed away recently, Minimal Wave has decided to make New Mexico available on wax for the first time. While the sound quality is appropriately dusty (it was badly recorded in the first place, of course), the music remains magical - bubbling, evocative, left-of-centre leftfield pop created with home-made synthesizers, modular hardware and little else. It's no wonder many consider it a classic album (even if was never officially released first time round).

Rhubarb Orc 19.53 Rev (6:43)
Review: It's the album that redefined ambient music, not least for a generation of parasympathetic ravers. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II marked a stylistic shift away from the first edition in the infamous ambient LP 'series', Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Volume II differed substantially; this time, there would be no 'techno' addendum to 'ambient', and all tracks thereupon would lack the usual indulgence of beats, however easy-on-the-ears these had been beforehand. Known for its many numbered tracks - which on the original edition, rather than track names, denoted references to images of natural forms, textures and geologic readymades, all bathed in orange, and from which fans had to infer the written names - this expanded edition stays faithful to this origin. Even so, it adds two unreleased D Jamesian treats - provided you don't count the massive Soundcloud dump of 2015 as a release - 'th1 [evnslower]' and a reversed version of 'Rhubarb' - as well as a the previously vinyl only '#19'.

Dreamfear (12:51)
Boy Sent From Above (13:26)
Review: Burial drops his latest two-tracker on XL, two chaotic breakbeat balancing acts firmly rooted in rushy UK 'ardkore and day-glo 80s freestyle respectively. The A is a nail-biting, cavernous tweak out, which Burial pipes out into the darkest, most paranoid corners of the rave, exhuming frazzled dancers and inducing a queasy euphoria that any seasoned hedonists will recognise all too well. 'Boy Sent From Above', on the other hand seems to chart the passage of an obsessive, icy winter graff mission, with tinny drum machines, saccharine squarewave arpeggio hooks and spraycan samples harking back to the heyday of B-Boy electro, Miami freestyle and NYC breaking with devastating efficacy, albeit seen through Burial's unmistakeable misty-eyed LDN gauze; chrome and black over day-glo. Dreamfear marks yet another welcome switch up in Burial's artistic direction, and makes for one of the most evocative, moving and transporting entries in his much pored-over catalogue.

Review: Depeche Mode's Dodgers Stadium Los Angeles 1990 album captures the band at the height of their Violator tour, which was a pivotal moment in their career and now comes on nice red wax. Recorded live at one of their most iconic performances, this limited-edition vinyl is a trip back to experience the band's dark, synth-driven sound in a massive stadium setting. Featuring hits like 'Personal Jesus' and 'Enjoy the Silence' the set was a well-balanced mix of brooding electronic atmospheres with anthemic energy and it now serves as a great tribute to one of their most unforgettable live shows.

Enjoy The Silence (Osadon instrumental) (6:20)
Review: Enjoy The Silence, Depeche Mode's standout single from Violator, marked a significant moment in the band's career, becoming their most successful UK single since 'Master & Servant' in 1984. 'Enjoy The Silence' captured both critical and public acclaim, peaking at number six in the UK charts and achieving top spots in Denmark and Spain, as well as reaching number eight in the US. The 12" version is beloved by fans with the myriad of great remixes the song provided. This new yellow vinyl version helps meet the demand of an always desirable dance record. The single's success earned Depeche Mode their first Brit Award for Best Single of 1990. This newfound positivity extended to the subsequent reception of Violator, solidifying 'Enjoy The Silence' as an iconic track in Depeche Mode's discography. The song continues to be celebrated for its brooding, tender qualities, and its ability to resonate with audiences globally as well as the iconic video.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: Live at the Teatro Iberico by English experimental - or apocalyptic folk, as they are sometimes wonderfully dubbed - group Current 93 capture a transcendent performance that resonates deeply with themes of death, loss, and hope. David Tibet's emotive delivery, alongside his talented ensemble, crafts an experience that transcends dimensions. The first five tracks, predominantly from Soft Black Stars, are hauntingly beautiful, with 'Whilst the Night Rejoices Profound and Still' featuring Antony on vocals, standing out as a pinnacle moment alongside breathtaking closing moments marked by feedback-laden guitars and sublime piano.

Review: It's 1990 and Depeche Mode couldn't really be riding much higher in the global music stakes. Having just released Violator, the band had finally debuted an album inside the Billboard Top 10 for the first time in their almost-decade-long history, and pretty much anyone who came into contact with the record was very quickly captivated by its sound. While definitely not a curveball, it marked an expansion of the group's existing style. Some have described it as synth-pop, others alternative rock. In many ways, it's a dance floor album, one that embraces goth and coldwave at its very core. Captured during their tour at that time, Set In Stone features landmark singles from the LP - 'Personal Jesus', of course, and 'World In My Eyes' - it also proves beyond any doubt that a Depeche Mode show is about more than simply playing the hits.

Review: With Ritual, electronica mastermind Jon Hopkins follows up his storied meditation-aid LP, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, for a return to the sublime uplifts that characterised his establishing sound. Somehow, Hopkins says of his latest full-length, "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing. I don't know where it's coming from, and I don't know where it's going, nor does it seem to matter. I just know when it is finished." Such remarkable humility sits in in stark contrast to the deep grandeur of the record, which refreshingly seems to have been made without overconscious intent; Hopkins' describes his approach to the album as a simple matter of creation, without too much second-guessing or reasoning after the fact. This would seem to counteract Psychedelic Therapy's interest in self-reflection and personal enlightenment; Ritual, as we glean from the title, is more action-oriented, pursuing the many epic pilgrimages and blue beyonds that Hopkins was first known to have embarked upon.

With the OST component of the score again handled by Alexandre Desplat, and its curated remainder selected by music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, New Moon is a compelling fusion of classical filmic orchestral music and brooding emo indie rock: the perfect combo to nail the affective headspace of both Edward and Jacob campers.

Review: Music From Memory share the CD edition (there's also a vinyl release) of their latest in a series of compilations, which focuses on the tide of new ambient and minimalist electronica which came about at the turn of the millennium, Virtual Dreams. Whilst the first volume focused on the techno and electronica musics emergent in Europe in 1993-99, Virtual Dreams Vol. 2 homes in on Japan during the same period, tracking the regional, geosonic differences between each global cultural centre. Tracing a fibrous thread, that began to weave itself of its own accord, out from the early 90s acid house FOMO experienced in Japan's early days, through to its restful response with the dawn of "listening techno" proffered by the likes of Sublime Records, Syzygy Records and Frogman Records, many of the tracks featured therein cull their choices from not only these leading lights but also the odd and not-so-odd rarity, helping usher in a truer representation of the era.

Review: James Clements (ASC) has been one of the most highly regarded artists in ambient, ambient techno and IDM scene since his evolution into the sound about 15 years ago. His ability to create deep soundscapes over lush beats and atmospheres come from his liquid drum n bass background prior to working with more cinematic tracks. ASC is back with a new release and it finds a home at the Past Inside the Present stable where he had put out a few EPs on the last couple years. This haunting and beautiful release Loss, explores various moods and atmospheres to great success. Tracks like the amazing and spacious 'Sensory Disintegration' to the poignant 'What More Can Be Said' which adds a lush airspace to a stunning piano piece. Some soundscapes are majestic and triumphant while others are minimal and then foreboding. New age and ambient fans will rejoice after hearing this magical album. Review: Berlin-based artist Pavel Milyakov collaborates with Yana Pavlova, Martyna Basta, Richie Culver and Torus on Enthropic Vision, an album-length collection of tracks spanning diverse genres. The A-side starts with the melancholic ambience of 'Moon Chant', featuring the ethereal vocals of Krakow experimental music scene veteran Martyna Basta, before 'Tesco' brings bleak trancey loops blended with British contemporary artist Richie Culver's spoken word poetry. 'Eternal Break', with Netherlands-based artist Torus, is all low subs, ecstatic pads and abrasive breaks, then the B-side kicks in with 'Gabba 17' - not a 170bpm gabba anthem, but rather a ghostly techno workout with an admittedly urgent 4/4 kick - and continues with another tune featuring Richie Culver's spoken word fused with breaks. The album closes with the grim beauty of 'The Thrill', recorded in collaboration with Ukrainian singer Yana Pavlova and transports more wised up listeners back to the hypnagogic universe of the duo's 2021 Blue LP.

Review: The Expanded Edition of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II is here; this is a reissue of an album that still serves as one of the ideasthetic backbones to most music fans' idea of 'ambient music' at large. A lesser-known fact is that when James recorded the record, he had concurrently undergone a period of lucid dreaming, and in this vivid lucid state, had heard many sounds akin to those heard on this record, which he had subsequently attempted to recreate. The sound of dreaming is usually an ineffable thing, but not to Aphex Twin, who had perhaps been one of the first to articulate dreams' bleary, smeary, selective and dream-distorted sonic quality. Many different interpreters have harped on this record, some hearing a 'cold islationism' in it, others a purer bliss; what is most evident is this one helped popularise ambient music in a formal, less connotative way, and continues to do so even today. This expanded versions features two unreleased tracks - that is, if you don't include the famous Soundcloud dump of nine years ago, plus 'Blue Calyx' now features on all formats instead of vinyl only.

The album explores the decline of these centers and the services they once offered, paralleling a broader societal shift away from communal support. Through evocative album artwork featuring architect Peter Garvin's work, notably the Castlefield Community Centre, Chapman-Fox paints a vivid sonic picture of a bygone era of community cohesion. Following the success of 2023's The Nation's Most Central Location, this album is poised to continue Chapman-Fox's critical acclaim and commercial success, offering a poignant reflection on the past and present state of communal life.

Steve Spacek occupies the A-side with the breezy broken beat and soul-in-space of 'Alone In Da Sun', while Lukid's 'Hair Of The Dog' is a more intense counterpart, with wobbling sub-bass and swirling, surging atmospherics hovering above.

Review: Global Communication's 76:14 stands out as a quintessential ambient album, often overlooked in favour of more hyped releases but in recent years has cemented itself as one of the most important and beloved electronic releases of the 1990s. Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, under their Global Communication alias, expertly fuse ambient, Berlin-School and new age influences with beatcraft and dub elements. The album's tracks range from pure ambient pieces reminiscent of early Eno to funk-hop infused rhythms and minimalist dub pulses. Its strong songcraft and unique sonic identity have earned it a dedicated following - richly textured soundscapes and engaging compositions have made it a favourite.

The album is a tapestry of skittering sounds, strange tape loops, and other outlandish noises that weave together to create a haunting and evocative atmosphere. One of the highlights of Sketches of My Nightmares is Tibet's haunting vocals. His voice is both ethereal and powerful, conveying a sense of vulnerability and longing. The lyrics, which are often cryptic and enigmatic, add to the album's dreamlike quality. Overall, Sketches of My Nightmares is a masterpiece of avant-garde music. It is a record that is both challenging and rewarding, and one that will leave a lasting impression on the listener.

Review: 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk, released in 1974, is a seminal track that redefined the future of electronic music. Its significance lies not only in its innovative use of synthesisers and electronic instruments but also in its ability to evoke a specific visual and emotional landscape. Here, the song's repetitive, motorik rhythms are given an overhaul - or more specifically three - by Jim Rider, a regular at Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream parties. They're beefed up for the floor, certainly, but maintain the kind of delicate touches that makew the original such a great listen.

Review: Originally released in 1998, Mixmaster Morris & Jonah Sharp's Quiet Logic surprisingly flew under the radar when it came out.- perhaps because of the huge amount of electronic music being released at the time. The pair have some of the most important albums and tracks in their respected genres and are arguably two of the most important figures in the electronic music chill out scene from the 90s, and when you add the input of Haruomi Hosono from Yellow Magic Orchestra on two tracks, it becomes an even more essential listen. Chill out heads unite!

Review: Analogue synth spooks rejoice, Pye Corner Audio is back with further explorations of the sweet spot between nostalgic fuzz and circuit-borne futurism. Ghost Box is a spiritual home for Martin Jenkins' flagship project, and he continues to edge out the scope of the Pye Corner sound without derailing the fundamental atmosphere. On The Endless Echo, warm, pulsing melodics set to eerie keys abound, and there's a fine balance between gorgeous ambient atmospheric pieces and sinewy, danceable rhythms, but Jenkins manages to sound fresh and inspired even while reliably holding true to the overall project aesthetic.

Review: Unusually, Optimo's JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes have taken the unusual step of not announcing the tracklist for their two-part 25th anniversary compilation ahead of release. Ordering, then, requires a leap of faith, but given the sheer breadth, diversity and quality of the music they've been playing over the last quarter of a decade, there's no doubt we're in safe hands. It's not a 'best of Optimo anthems' collection, or merely a bunch of peak-time favourites; instead, we're promised a mixture of unusual warm-up favourites and confirmed dancefloor workouts in a wide range of style that have long been favourites of the two Glasgow-based DJs - many of which will, inevitably, be slept-on, forgotten or under-appreciated gems.

Review: Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: Dark Entries takes it back to New York City in around 1982 for this previously unreleased record from Ike Yard. This cult crew was made up of Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekmann, Kenneth Compton, and Fred Szymanski and they worked in their own realm somewhere between proto-body music and No Wave peers in New York. They disbanded just a year after forming having dropped an EP on Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1981 and then a self-titled album for Factory in 1982. Using the Korg MS-20 and the Roland TR-808 they cook up plenty of hybrid electro-acoustic sounds and ramshackle rhythms that are underpinned by moody baselines and perfect to get bodies moving in the club. Whether you're a post-punk fan or lover of weird electronics, this is well worth checking out.

Review: Much loved doom monger emo kids Depeche Mode have always been ripe for remixing by new generations of electronic music artists and so it is that there 'My Favourite Stranger' gets a series of re-rubs here on Columbia. Tech house mainstay Boris Brejcha remixes first and elongates the grooves with mournful pads up top. The Ela Minus remix of the same tune brings some extra textured and darker moods and the best is saved till the last if you ask us. The Lond Island Sound remix is high speed and tinged with electro synth work as the moody vocals echo about the mix to trippy effect.

Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Review: Throbbing Gristle's The Third Mind Movements, now commercially available via Mute, captures the band's experimental and live flair for the dramatic. Formed in 1975, Throbbing Gristle, comprising Chris Carter, Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, revolutionized music and culture with their extreme, subversive approach. Initially released exclusively during their final American tour in 2009, this album was recorded during the Desertshore sessions at the ICA, London. It features six live recordings, blending manipulated, time-stretched samples, rhythmical breakbeats, and hypnotic electronic oscillations. The attentive audience adds a palpable energy to the performances. The Third Mind Movements is a vital addition for fans as the band's unique ability to create unsettling, immersive soundscapes is on full display. This release reaffirms Throbbing Gristle's lasting impact on industrial music and their unparalleled legacy in pushing the boundaries of sound and culture.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a remarkable collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, remains a standout achievement in both artists' repertoires. First released in 1986, this enchanting album is now receiving a well-deserved vinyl reissue, meticulously remastered by Robin Guthrie from the original tapes. This album is a stunning fusion of the Cocteau Twins' signature dreamlike atmospheres with Budd's elegant, improvisational piano, resulting in a listening experience that is both expansive and deeply personal. The blending of Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal vocals, seamlessly intertwined with Guthrie's luminous guitar work and Raymonde's resonant bass, creates a sound that is both distinct and evocative. The album effortlessly balances vocal tracks with instrumentals, each adding to its rich and diverse sonic palette. This reissue offers a chance to rediscover a defining moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The Moon and the Melodies continues to stun audiences. This CD edition is the perfect vehicle to an ethereal beauty of the highest order.

Review: Kelly Lee Owens' fourth studio album marks a significant shift in Owens' musical journey, embodying themes of freedom and escapism. Dream State emerges from a period of inner transformation following a break-up, and is a testament to collaboration, featuring producer-writer contributions from electronic music luminaries Bicep, Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers and George Daniel of The 1975. The synergy between these artists infuses Dreamstate with a rich, dynamic sound that blends Owens' ethereal vocals with innovative electronic beats and lush production. A range of emotions and sonic landscapes, offering both introspective and liberating experiences.

Review: Darren Cunningham's latest full-length LP, Statik, is yet another bullseye for the experimental musician. Seeming to nail that impossible balance on the fulcrum between 'static' or 'still' digital noise and 'watery' melodies alluded to in the many titles on offer here ('Dolphin Spray', 'Doves Over Atlantis', 'Cafe del Mars'), this one is ultimately a worthy proof of concept: that even the most arid, bare-bones music can possibly originate from a flow state; that water itself is not wet. Get ready for an ice-cold plunge into a sonic liquid you've likely never immersed yourself in before.

Review: It is at this point a given that every Joe Hisiashi / Studio Ghibli soundtrack should land on our doorsteps. Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, The Boy And The Heron, is the very latest anime fantasy film to be released through the esteemed film franchise; described as a 'big, fantastical film', it follows a boy named Mahito Maki who moves to the countryside after his mother's death, discovers an abandoned tower near his new home, and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron. Whereas many of Hisiashi's other soundtracks deal in wide variegations of whimsy and heart-warmth, The Boy And The Heron skews purely to the latter, working in the bare but endlessly affecting mode of solo piano, and evoking the lonely but ultimately revelatory internal process that occurs during grief. Befitting of Miyazaki's controversial decision for the film not to pander to audiences or spell out meanings, so too does Hisiashi's contribution find reams of expression in a spare, single instrument.

Review: After a two-decade interlude, Jim O'Rourke's Moikai returns with Spectral Evolution, a major new work by Rafael Toral. Making his name in the mid-1990s with influential guitar drone platters like Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field (both reissued by Drag City in recent years), Toral has never been one to rest on his laurels repeating past glories. In the early years of the 21st century, Toral began his "Space Program", a 13 year investigation of the performance possibilities of an ever-expanding set of custom electronic instruments, played with a fluid phrasing and rhythmic flexibility inspired by jazz. Dedicated to honing his skills on these idiosyncratic instruments, Toral founded his Space Quartet, where his mini-amplifier feedback integrates seamlessly into the frontline of a classic post-free jazz quartet rounded out with saxophone, double bass, and drums. Since 2017, Toral's work has been entering a new phase, often still centred around the arsenal of self-built instruments developed in the Space Program, but with a renewed interest in the long tones and almost static textures of his earlier work; he has also, after more than a decade, returned to the electric guitar. Spectral Evolution is undoubtedly Toral's most sophisticated work to date, bringing together seemingly incompatible threads from his entire career into a powerful new synthesis, both wildly experimental and emotionally affecting.

Review: Andre 3000s 87-minute flute epic makes it onto a double CD courtesy of Sony. One of the most intriguing, enveloping and therapeutic LPs of 2023, New Blue Sun sees the Outkast veteran drop the mic in favour of myriad flutes, both digital and acoustic, creating a loose, patient album which sounds somewhat like the lovechild of Jon Hassell and Ras G. The whimsically named tracks unfold in a languid dream sequence, feeling improvised but focused, sparse yet dense, and deeply emotive throughout. 3000's far-from-virtuosic flute performances add to the charm and unpredictability of the album, and ensure that the overwhelmingly gentle music doesn't veer too far into vapid new-agery. One for yer pensive off-days!

This personal survey of the 90s ambient scene from journalist and author Jon Savage does a good job in gathering together a representative selection of genuine gems and overlooked classics, drifting between the bubbly, deep space brilliance of Richard H Kirk's Sandoz project ('Limbo'), bleeping ambient house ('Calm' by 2 Cabbages on a Drip), early progressive house (React 2 Rhythm), electronic psychedelia (the tabla rhythms and swirly noises of Rapoon), ambient blues (Underworld), IDM (U-ziq), and glacial, slow-motion bliss (Biosphere).

Their project mirrors the layered experiences of rave culture and blends some nostalgia for that with distinct musical identities. Inquiri brings the energy of main rooms where trance-induced emotional highs, while bvdub represents the ambient, early morning deep house scenes. Review: Something's Up! is a masterful compilation that features the eclectic brilliance of John Barry's film scores. Curated by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley, this collection highlights Barry's transition from a British arranger to a pop icon, renowned for defining the sound of the Cold War spy movie era. Focusing on music from 1964 to 1967, this album features Barry's iconic work on James Bond classics like Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice, cementing his influence on the spy genre. Beyond Bond, Barry's contributions to films such as The Ipcress File and The Quiller Memorandum exemplify his ability to blend tension with sophistication. The collection also includes less-celebrated but notable scores like those for King Rat, The Chase and Seance on a Wet Afternoon, reflecting Barry's diverse range and ability to craft memorable themes beyond the mainstream. Barry's music, characterised by its lush orchestration and emotive power, extended its reach from the silver screen to the vinyl, resonating with listeners even if they hadn't seen the films - and his exceptional talent and enduring legacy in film music is on full display here,

Yorke collaborates with producer Sam Petts-Davies again here , as well as the London Contemporary Orchestra and a jazz ensemble, including Robert Stillman and Tom Skinner. Review: Optimo's JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes, undoubtedly the UK's most fearless and on-point 'anything goes' DJs, have spent a quarter of a decade building trust with their audience. You can never tell what they might play when you turn up at one of their events, but you know it will be inspired, high-quality, and most likely make you want to dance. With their two-part 25th anniversary compilation (this is part two), they've taken a similar approach, keeping the track-list under wraps until release day while promising a mix of oddball warm-up favourites and floor-focused tracks they love and have played at various points since the start of the century. Given their track record, we can expect forgotten gems, left-of-centre anti-anthems, and unusual party-starting delights.

Review: Too Dark Park, the seminal 1990 album from influential industrial pioneers Skinny Puppy, receives a well-deserved reissue celebrating 35 years of its legendary release. This record stands as one of the band's most influential works, featuring tracks like 'Tormentor' and 'Spasmolytic that have left an indelible mark on the industrial music landscape. Praised by publications like Vice and Metal Hammer, which named it one of the "10 Best Industrial Albums," Too Dark Park is a menacing and massive exploration of themes like H.P. Lovecraft-style cosmic horror, addiction, mental disarray, and the disintegration of nature. Spin aptly described it as a "return to the bloodbath," capturing the album's cataclysmic and chaotic essence. Too Dark Park showcases the band's commitment to experimentation, incorporating elements of funk alongside forceful basslines, samples, electronics, distortion, and heavy guitars. This reissue brings Skinny Puppy's groundbreaking album back to vinyl for the first time in 30 years, offering both longtime fans and new listeners a chance to experience its raw power and innovation. Too Dark Park remains a legendary album in industrial music and continues to captivate audiences with its uncompromising intensity.

Review: Jon Hopkins' forthcoming album Ritual spans 41 minutes of uninterrupted sonic exploration, drawing inspiration from ceremony, spiritual liberation and the hero's journey and creating a dense and immersive soundscape that showcases his mastery of depth and contrast. Collaborating with long-term partners like Vylana, 7RAYS, and Ishq, as well as newcomers like Clark and Emma Smith, Hopkins weaves together cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming, and transcendent melodies to craft a sonic experience that is both emotionally and sonically weight. Ritual sees Hopkins' evolution as an artist, building upon themes explored throughout his 22-year career while venturing into new sonic territories. The album's first single, 'Ritual(evocation),' offers a tantalising glimpse into this expansive sonic landscape, with its hypnotic rhythms and darkened soundscapes drawing listeners into a world of introspection and catharsis. With its warm, live feel and seamless blend of softness and intensity, Ritual promises to be a transformative listening experience for fans of electronic music and beyond.

Review: In the 70s and 80s, nothing was as revolutionary as the synthesiser. Electronic sounds became essential for forward-thinking adverts, with TV producers and advertisers seeking music akin to 'Tubular Bells,' Tomita, and Jean Michel Jarre. Music libraries like De Wolfe, Bruton, Parry, and Chappell swiftly adapted. Bob Stanley's new album, 'Tomorrow's Fashions,' compiles advertising jingles, TV themes, and space exploration tracks with ambient beats from that era. Despite being 40-50 years old, the music feels fresh, featuring jazz veterans like Brian Bennett and John Cameron embracing synthesizers. This electronica predated new age and ambient music, influenced pop, early Human League, Warp Records, and has been sampled by MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar.

Review: Molchat Doma are one of the global music phenomenons of our time. The Belarusian trio first started causing a small stir among the kind of circles that actively hunt out Belarusian synth bands. That grew into widespread rumblings throughout the underground, driven by online shares as much as play on independent radio stations. Skip forward again, and the outfit can claim true viral sensation status, having conquered tastemakers and social networks across the world. Monument is their third album, and was largely written during Covid-19 quarantine in their hometown, Minsk. Again, it's an evolutionary thing. Post-punk vies for your attention next to synth pop, cold wave, New Wave and romantic electronica. Calling to mind, at various points, The Cure, Depeche Mode and Joy Division, among others, nevertheless those comparisons don't feel fair - the work here is fresher feeling and, ultimately, removed from the North Atlantic hegemony, so it should be analysed in that context.

Review: X Mal Deutschland formed in Hamburg 1980 into the post punk era. Most well known for being signed to 4AD records but are slowly being discovered and enjoyed by more fans in recent years. One of the top indie labels in recent years, Sacred Bones is an ideal home to house this early compilation of their work. This package takes all three tracks from their first two singles Schwarze Welt and Incubus Succubus plus adds two other compilation only tracks in 'Allein' and 'Kalbermarsch'. The music is raw and powerful; blending a German punk sound while sprinkling in some avante-garde electronics and atmosphere. You can hear the evolution and growth in the band in just the two years this release covers. Growing from a raw band experimenting with sound and structure to a powerful goth rock band. This version is presented on beautiful purple vinyl. If you are big fan of Minimal Wave discoveries then you will be happy to add this great sounding vinyl to your collection. Thank you Sacred Bones!

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: Dr. Alex Paterson's latest endeavour, Orboretum: The Orb Collection, is a limited-edition retrospective that spans the career of The Orb, charting their decades-long journey across a four-LP set. Beautifully packaged in an octagonal sleeve that unfolds into a massive flower, each disc is pressed in a unique colourigreen, lilac, orange, and blue, reflecting the four seasons that inspired the collection's structure. With tracks carefully selected by Paterson himself, the compilation delves into their storied output, mixing iconic cuts from Abolition of the Royal Familia and Prism with rarities and fresh takes on classics. This set isn't merely a nostalgic trip through The Orb's golden years, though, it's a "director's cut," as Paterson puts it, one that reframes their vast catalogue to reveal new pathways and connections between works that span decades. Discs A and B highlight their collaborations with Universal, while discs C and D turn the spotlight on their independent ventures with labels like Cooking Vinyl, Kompakt, and Liquid Sound Design. With sleeve notes by Kris Needs and each track handpicked by Paterson, Orboretum is a masterclass in electronic evolution, blending roots with recent highlights. For die-hard fans and newcomers alike, the four-LP set is an ode to the timeless, boundary-pushing ethos that has kept The Orb relevant for over 30 years. The collection is also available as a two-CD set with a 24-page booklet, ensuring everyone can find their own slice of ambient heaven.

Review: Wolfgang Voigt's seminal project Gas returns with a definitive reissue of its eponymous debut album, originally released in 1996 on Mille Plateaux and now presented anew by Kompakt on a lavish 3x12 vinyl set. This release marks a long-awaited return to the pure essence of Gas, as initially envisioned by Voigt. Before this full-length debut, hints of Gas's distinctive sound surfaced through early EPs and compilation tracks, showcasing Voigt's knack for ambient electronic landscapes. Gas unfolds across six expansive, untitled tracks that drift seamlessly, each a mesmerising journey of ethereal loops and rhythmic undercurrents. Voices from distant classical motifs echo faintly, adding to the album's enigmatic allure. While later albums like Zauberberg and Konigsforst would refine and deepen the Gas aesthetic, this debut stands out for its airy, evocative mood and its more fluid, exploratory nature. It captures Gas at a moment of artistic genesis, where Voigt's sonic vision begins to crystallise amidst dreamlike textures and subtle rhythmic structures. Gas, in its reissued form, not only revisits a pivotal moment in electronic music history but also serves as a testament to Voigt's enduring influence and avant-garde spirit, setting the stage for its legendary successors.

Review: Balmat proudly present their 11th release with a new record from Polish artist Bartosz Kruczynski, whose minimalist atmospheric sensibility has caused the label to ease their worries over being dubbed an 'ambient' label, at least for the time being. Better known by his Rhythm Section-releasing house alias Earth Trax, Kruczynski takes a stark turn here, presenting a fierce yet fine selection of acidic ambient vignettes. On Dreams & Whispers, the pH scale is piquant without verging on completely corrosive; each ambient free association here - called either a 'Dream' or a 'Whisper' - is able to melt some psychic substrate without totally eviscerating or untying others. This is revelatory, yet not overthought ambient music, designed to treat, yet not brute-force-expose, the unconscious wishes behind our dream-distortions.

Il Ricordo Di Serena
Review: Four Flies presents a gem for vinyl collectors with the 7" release of Riz Ortolani's soundtrack highlights from Confessione di un commissario di polizia al procuratore della Repubblica. Side-1's 'Serena e Lomunno' showcases an exceptional quartet's jazzy spell, weaving bass, electric guitar, drums, and piano into a standout groove. On Side-2, Il ricordo di Serena continues the magic with a trio, maintaining the rhythmic essence while sacrificing none of the brilliance. The interplay of bass and drums is the backbone, adorned by electric guitar and piano's refined phrasings. The result? Irresistible jazz-funk breaks, ripe for sampling. A must-have addition to Four Flies' series of 45s celebrating Italy's golden age soundtracks and library productions, this release is essential for any serious Italian sound enthusiast's collection.

Review: As compelling as it is unexpected, the ever-prolific Kevin Richard Martin of The Bug fame steps forth with a deeply eerie, lovelorn platter of wheezy dub techno haze, gauzy half-step and hollow, heart-rending ambience, dedicated to Amy Winehouse. In his words: "whilst randomly watching Asif Kapadia's moving bio doc 'Amy', on a long distance flight (...) i realised the scale of her greatness and the tragedy of the circumstances that led to her untimely death" and with 'Black', he offers up a gentle, reverent eulogy to the late singer, calling to mind Burial's charred LDN isolationism, Actress' sparser work, and even what Martin himself refers to as Mark Ronson's 'poptastic' productions, as on fever-coded upright bass shuffler 'Camden Crawling' and 'Black', an ingenious, spectral harmonic flip of Winehouse's Back To Black. A perfect ode to a misunderstood icon.

Side-A offers a dark ambient atmosphere as it weaves choral mists and ritualistic beats that evoke an eerie, swamp-like world before landing in an unsettling suburban scene. Side-B opens with reflective tones but shifts into a baroque minimalism that merges modular synths, breaks and drum machines. Layered with ambient field recordings and meticulously selected samples, the EP showcases FSOL's unique way of blending atmospheric depth and electronic experimentation into a hauntingly immersive experience.

This mega-rare record has become a stone-cold cult classic album revered by dark pop devotees. Review: English Electric masterfully bridges OMD's storied past and a visionary future. This second album since their 2006 reformation features nods to Kraftwerk - acknowledged as their original inspiration, having played in their native Liverpool's Empire venue in 1975 - Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach and their own classic hits. Tracks like 'Metroland' pay homage to Kraftwerk's 'Europe Endless' while introducing post-industrial beats, reflecting the band's evolution. The album's thematic undertone, inspired by the defunct UK firm English Electric, underscores a nostalgic futurism. 'Kissing the Machine,' a rework with Kraftwerk's Karl Bartos, and 'Helen of Troy,' reminiscent of 'Joan of Arc,' highlight their timeless charm. Songs like 'Our System' blend aggressive EBM influences without merely replicating past sounds. The album's opening, 'Please Remain Seated,' poignantly announces, 'The future that you anticipated has been cancelled,' which has the band poking fun at critics putting their timeless sound in a 80s box. OMD's English Electric stands strong, with tracks like 'Atomic Ranch' and 'The Future Will Be Silent' showing their comfort in their unique retro-futuristic sound. Reissued on vinyl with stunning artwork, this album not only recalls their legacy but also cements their groove in modern times.

Review: Embarking on a series of new Current 93 reissues via his own label Cashen's Gap, David Tibet here reminisces on the very second LP to be released under the moniker, Dogs Blood Rising. Said to have been "reeling in the weeks - which felt like years - after my first Current 93 album, I had started on the difficult second album" (Dogs Blood Rising) after "having been asked to appear on both Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test 93 times in the same week". Cult mythologising aside, this five-track sonic gorgonesquerie is a fantastic primer in early occult industrial music, leading on the iconoclastic canto 'Christus Christus' and ending on the chamber-effected monologue 'St. Peters Keys All Bloody'. The songs cast implicit scorn on the popular imaginaria that insist that heaven and hell are divided; Tibet is keen to collapse them into one, devising a new sonic eschatology all unto his own.

Review: Carsten Nicolai has left an indelible mark on electronic music since his debut 24 years ago, carving out a genre uniquely his own characterised by surgically precise sound shapes, glitched-out percussion, and vast atmospheres rich in frequency. Continuing his exploration of astrophysics and digital mechanics, HYbr:ID II is the second installment in Nicolai's series. Accompanied by a 12-page booklet of visually arresting diagrams, the music takes precedence. Immersive dub and electronica elements define the journey into intricately manipulated digital production, drawing inspiration from Minkowski's spacetime model. Each of the ten compositions, stemming from a score for Richard Siegal's Ectopia performance, offers a cosmic ballet of rhythm and resonance. Dense with pensive moods and resonant pitches, Nicolai's soundscape conjures a vast cosmic expanse, occasionally guiding listeners down unexpected auditory paths and prompting moments of deep reflection. The album's meticulous craftsmanship and expansive sonic palette underscore Nicolai's ability to seamlessly merge conceptual exploration with musical innovation. Perfect for fans of spatial manipulations, digital structures, and flawless sound design, Alva Noto adds another significant piece to his outstanding discography.

Review: Billow Observatory is a collaborative project from Detroit-based Jason Kolb and Denmark's Jonas Munk which explores ambient with a certain post rock sensibility. Following gracefully on from 2022's Stareside album, this new LP in fact gathers together two separate EPs from the duo and presents them as one listening experience. There's a delicacy to tracks like 'Garden of Four Streams' which speaks to Japanese environmental music, but still the projects maintains its affinity for ethereal chambers of sound as much as fragile foreground sonic figures. This is a high-grade strain of ambient with a depth of sound which will capture your attention from the very start.

Review: Dune: Part Two has been met by rave reviews form both critics and cinema goers and there is no doubt that yet another epic soundtrack from Hans Zimmer has helped contribute to that acclaim. His work is another masterpiece that perfectly complements the epic saga's grandeur. Building upon the thematic motifs established in the first installment, Zimmer's score transports listeners to the vast, mystical world of Arrakis. With its sweeping orchestral arrangements and haunting electronic textures, the music evokes a sense of awe and intrigue and Zimmer's mastery of cinematic storytelling shines through every note as he captures the emotional depth and complexity of Frank Herbert's universe. From the thunderous percussion of battle sequences to the haunting melodies of desert landscapes, this is a sci-fi soundtrack essential.

Mike Paradinas' latest record Grush aims at something between a crush and a grunt - as if to suggest the violent hydraulic floorings of the former and the cave-manic disinhibition of the latter. Sonically, this follows suit with Paradinas' as-ever ascendant, wompy-breaksy sound, which this time comes peppered with additional flavours of black MIDI and generative sound-spurts honed at live shows; the ultimate aim of the album is to replicate the nonstop feel of a live tour, with each track here having been meticulously road-tested and polished for home listening (or not - get out there and dance to the thing, couch potatoes!)

Review: CHBB was a project by Beate Bartel and Chris Haas that developed from a collaboration first embarked upon in 1981, while working on the self-titled album Liaisons Dangereuses. After initially releasing their music only on four limited cassettes, this compilation from Soulsheriff flaunts their complete works, including all recordings from the original tapes paired with several new and original tracks by each artist. One can hardly tell the difference between original and new here; from the surreally throat-sung contraltos of 'NBKE' to the jankily strange doubletimes of 'Bali', from the the warbly hypnotisms of 'Shapeshifter' to the womping-kicks-over-German-language-incantations of 'Ima Iki-Mashoo', there's an industrial, experimental treat here for everyone.

Review: Dark Entries are back with more of that sweet, sweet goth sauce in the shape of Topographies. The San Francisco band have been building up a following for their faithful tribute to sad-eyed synth-pop and new wave from the early 80s, releasing an album in 2020 on Funeral Party as well as a single for Sonic Cathedral. It's not hard to pick out the influences, and it all makes sense when you learn Gray Tolhurst is the son of The Cure's Laurence Tolhurst. They're not simply aping another band's sound though and if you can't get enough of that quintessential goth rock sound, you're going to love this record.

Review: The Advisory Circle's Mind How You Go is a haunting and evocative album that transports listeners back to the eerie world of 1960s and 1970s public information films. Inspired by the chilling soundscapes of these films, the album captures a sense of nostalgia and unease that is both poignant and unsettling. The album's music is both catchy and unsettling, with its eerie melodies and haunting vocals creating a sense of unease. The lyrics, which often focus on themes of danger and caution, add to the album's unsettling atmosphere. Mind How You Go is a masterpiece of nostalgic electronica. It is a record that is both haunting and beautiful.

Review: In August 2003, German synth icons Kraftwerk released Tour de France Soundtracks, their first album of new material since 1986's Electric Cafe. Even before the album's release, the band embarked on the extensive Minimum-Maximum world tour in January 2003 to great acclaim and much fan delight. By February 2004, the pioneering group had taken the tour to Scandinavia to perform in Helsinki, Finland, on the 6th and at Stockholm's Cirkus venue on the 8th and 10th. The Stockholm shows are still considered among the best of the tour and they are, luckily, all recorded for live FM radio broadcast. That exceptional concert is now available in its entirety on this new two-part set on translucent red vinyl.

Review: Elevations is a brand new album from Contours, aka Manchester-based artist Tom Burford who is a drummer and percussionist who draws on that in his always forward-thinking sounds. The album started with him exploring the Balafon, a Malian-tuned percussion instrument. Having got to grips with how to play it he expanded the work into this full length, which is an elegant and deft collection of compositions centred around the rhythmical interactions of percussion, synthesiser and strings. It draws on jazz, minimalism, Fourth World and modern classical to sooth your soul and elevate your mind.

Review: Modern glassy ambient forefronters Motion Ward present their latest masterpiece from two standout centre-stagers on their roster, Ulla Strauss and Ultrafog. Having not collaborated on a full-length record before, the one is billed simply as 'two individuals from faraway (journeying) the world together'. "(They) were given many tiny gifts from the surroundings. Then the music came out as a matter of course, as if a thing was being put in its right place." Sonically, this translates to a pristine, sampledelic blissout, verging on the nascent road-trippy electronic-shoegaze motifs that Motion Ward have found themselves exploring as of late; and echoing the kind of alien ambient guitar-dubs that could recall Fennesz or Bibio, lest they weren't also mixed up with the kind of contemporary vocal chopups and glassy, aerated refractions that continue to carve out this extended crew's current noble standing. Our highlights; 'Lame Mart', 'Kind Zo'.

Review: Habibi Funk cannot contain their excitement in sharing a second collection of deep grooves and unreleased songs from Algeria's Ahmed Malek soundtrack works. Ahmed Malek - who has often been compared to Ennio Morricone - recorded the majority of these songs in the 1970s and early 1980s, during which time his own native Algeria was in its film heyday. Malek became known for his combination of traditional music with jazz, psych-rock, and R&B, and yet did not find international recognition beyond his hometown; Habibi Funk recount the mission of tracking down Malek's sister to unearth a box full of master tapes, which formed the foundation of this miraculous new release salvage. As Ahmed says, "I didn't choose music, music chose me": it shows here.

Review: The limited 7" edition of Marine Eyes' latest full-length ambient record 'To Belong' hears a distilling of the original fourteen-track record down to just four selections. Though every track on the digital version of the album works in its own right, the choice on offer here - 'Hushed', 'Of The West', 'Bluest' and 'Call & Answer' - are particularly deserving of the study on wax. Something static, nigh time-crystalline is achieved on the B2, with its held root note evincing something of the quality of an infinite dream; the A1 recalls some mix of DJ Healer, Malibu or David Motion with its three note tenor-pad lilt; the A2 gets at the best of both worlds, sounding like a paradisiacal bathhouse vision set in slow motion; the B1 is the tensest, opting for a moodier key, but its reversed guitar taps and sustained choir-synth working in a no less lachrymose aesthetic.

Review: zake's latest album, Dolere, unfolds meticulously over 70 minutes and invites you deep into his signature blend of detailed, harmonic drone. Inspired by the suspended weight of unchangeable emotions, the first movement drifts on melancholy waves all enveloped in analogue hiss and tape samples that echo a wandering mind's ceaseless pondering. The title track shifts mood with darkly-tinged drones and subtle field recordings that progress deliberately like shadows in a forest. Both pieces offer refuge from life's relentless pace and resonate like sonic Rorschach Tests or meditative soundscapes. Positioned alongside ambient greats like Thomas Koner, this is another essential album in a long line of them from this ambient titan.

Review: .You have to admire Basil Kirchin's attitude. At the age of 13, he joined his father's Big Band orchestra,, debuting at Tottenham Court Road's Paramount venue, and would spend up to eight hours a day practicing music during the London Blitz. Soon after the war ended, he went off to tour with a number of famous names, including Teddy Foster and Ted Heath, before he rejoined his old man's outfit for another stint. The arrival of rock & roll in the late-1950s catalysed a decision to leave that group again, telling his parent "you're a prisoner of rhythm, and I was fed up playing other people's music." At this point, Kirchin headed for India, spending five months in the Ramakrishna Temple trying to figure out what life was about, and if his world view had any substance beyond "the ramblings of a pot-head." This was before other artists were doing that kind of thing. A true visionary who would go on to play a pivotal role in the British jazz, avant garde, free jazz and experimental scenes, now you know all that is there anyway you're not buying this?

It marked a pivotal moment in their career and listening back now is still an iconic live recording. Their burgeoning synth-pop sound with its pulsating rhythms and introspective lyrics shines through classics like 'Just Can't Get Enough.' Dave Gahan's charismatic vocals and Martin Gore's evocative melodies remain unparalleled. This concert tracks their evolution into electronic music pioneers, delivering an emotionally-charged performance that resonates with fans to this day, making it a timeless experience worth revisiting.

Review: Something of ground-breaking album on its initial release in December 1994, ISDN is one of Future Sound of London's most name-checked sets. It's effectively a re-edited and rearranged collection of live recordings - jammed out tracks that were initially broadcast to the world via ISDN links to clubs and radio stations, which FSOL brilliantly moulded into a mind-mangling journey through IDM, trip-hop, proto-big beat, dub, ambient, found sounds, field recordings and wayward electronica. To celebrate the album's 30th birthday, it returns as a two-disc set, freshly 'amalgamated and re-sequenced' by FSOL to include material from both previous editions of the album. It is, then, a kind of 'definitive version' of the LP, and one that still sounds as joyously weird, trippy and psychedelic as it did first time around.

His 'What Time Is Love? It's mental, and we love it.

Review: First released in 2018, The Light Is Leaving Us All is one of Current 93's (David Tibet's) most up-to-date explorations in sound, and is noted by the artist himself as one of his most recent favourites. An expansive collaborative cluster of entities, some human and others perhaps not, assisted Tibet in the making of this morbid neofolk opus, which, when not indulging droning guitarscapes and dulcimer twinkles, humours a spoken word and found sound palette, constructing a conniving persona that perhaps farcically laments the loss of suburban niceties (clues in the track titles like 'The Birds Are Sweetly Singing', 'The Policeman Is Dead', 'The Postman Is Singing', 'The Milkmaid Sings' and 'A Thousand Witches' portray a macabre picture of the dead underside of sleepy hometown life). When Tibet sings, he brings a knowingly resigned tone to the record, sounding almost genderless in his evocation of experience and loss of domestic innocence.

The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small) (19:49)
Review: The reissue of Current 93's Nature Unveiled brings back an iconic album that first captivated listeners with its avant-garde sound. This album features two striking tracks: 'Ach Golgotha (Maldoror Is Dead)' and 'The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small).' 'Ach Golgotha (Maldoror Is Dead)' stands out as an irreverent celebration of orthodox liturgical rites, inspired by the demon Maldoror, a creation of French poet Lautreamont. This track, with its dark and mystical aura, reflects the early influences on Tibet, including the magician Aleister Crowley. Fans appreciate the eerie and otherworldly appeal of this piece, which retains its power and impact decades later. 'The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small)' complements the first track with its own haunting soundscapes. The album's ability to transport listeners to a realm of fantastic nightmares underscores Current 93's lasting influence in the experimental music scene. Pressed on picture disc, this version is extra special for collectors who look for unique music and packaging.

Review: Inhmost is an alias of UK-based Simon Huxtable and Future Research Journal Entries: Part I marks his debut album for the peerless US ambient label Past Inside the Present, after albums for stables as illustrious as re:st, Huinali, Tonight's Dream and Spatial. It fits right in with the imprint's vast canon as it's an immersive work described as "a time capsule from a forgotten generation of space travellers." The album follows his collaboration with ASC on The Moons of Saturn and has similarly cosmically-minded themes. Opener 'Visualization of Forever' features calming drones and soft synths, 'Surface of an Untouched Moon' is awash with tranquillity and 'Gravitational Correction' and 'Haunting Silence' capture the fragile boundaries between life and the void. The closing piece, 'Sunrise On A New World' is a final dynamic odyssey that will leave you wanting to start the whole trip again.

Review: Washington's Slow Dancing Society aka Drew Sullivan has gone long here: Do We Become Sky? is a deeply immersive 86-minute work that very much rewards being listed to in one sitting. It is "a spiritual successor" to his 2008 album Priest Lake that draws upon feelings of loss, mostly using the tonality of the Korg Wavestation as a foundational instrument through the work. It features well-balanced boiling of tension with subtle moments of release, swelling harmonies, plucked guitars and evocative synth progressions that always keep things moving both physically and emotionally.

Review: If you've not seem the movie Oppenheimer chances are you've had your head buried deep in the sand for the past year or so. The multi-Academy Award-winning scientific epic charts the development of the first nuclear bomb and subsequent realisation, on the part of the man who cracked the formula, that such terrifying power should never have been brought into our world. Directed by Christopher Nolan, outspoken critics of the master filmmaker may by now be wondering if he'll ever make another movie with a linear storyline - so much of his output is anything but these days. However, that slightly surreal, disjointed, era-jumping approach to storytelling necessitates a soundtrack that combines stunning classical and more avant-garde experimentations. Which Ludwig Goransson delivered with spectacular effect. Now those tones are yours to own.

Review: Earnest, atmospheric, romantic-gothic guitar pieces from Alain Goraguer, whose Rare Soundtracks & Lost Tapes hears a collection never heard before on vinyl. Goraguer is best known as a collaborator and ghostwriter of Serge Gainsbourg, as well as the scoring composer for the surrealist sci-fi animation film Fantastic Planet. At around the same time of the making of these two indelible compositions, Goraguer also wrote two similar, but less publicly-oriented scores, both of which appear on this record in a back-to-back fashion. An array of breathy flutes, eerie backing synth counterpoints, and shaky percussions all combine to cloud the glasses on this beautifully bittersweet album-length hypnosis.

Review: There's something special in the water here. The Knife's Olof Dreijer presents three sprawling tracks on a new EP marking the start of a fresh chapter in his career, with the opener, 'Coral', starting the scoring with a strange and captivating bit of what you might call micro-techno. A lo-fi kind of workout that marries beautiful harmonic tones with a hoover bass in a way that almost calls to mind 'Rainforest' era Mathew Johnson, only more organic and live feeling. Overleaf, so to speak, 'Flora' invites us to sit on a cloud of gentle strings and mesmerising noises, like reliving a precious but now-faint memory, delicate enough to break. Meanwhile, 'Hazel' takes us back down to Earth, its slowly unfolding, muffled steel drum melodies feeling strangely homely while also not of this place, this here and now.

Review: Cult English electronic duo I Monster aka Sheffield based record producers Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling dropped Neveroddoreven, their second studio album, on 21 July 2003. A little later than first planned, it now gets a special 20th Anniversary re-issue on CD as well as this double gatefold. It incudes the original album plus three new singles and the much loved acoustic version of 'Daydream in Blue' which even if you don't think you know, you will, because ti has been rather ubiquitous in ad campaigns for brands including Ford and Magnum Ice Cream. Also helping to keep this band relevant after all these years was their single 'Who Is She' going viral on TikTok in 2023 and picking up 290M Spotify streams.

Review: Dave Tipper, formerly a key component of the late 90s/early 00s breakbeat scene both as a producer and as bossof the Fuel label, reissues this Tipper album released in 2014 but still garnering immense interest a decade later. His 12th full-length release masterfully blends IDM, breakbeat, glitch, and downtempo, veering from downtempo to sound design and his impeccable, inimitable breaks sound. Through innovative sound manipulation techniques, he juxtaposes skewed, chopped, and distorted low-end transmissions with ethereal orchestral melodies, making this a must have for fans of challenging - in all the right ways - music.

This pair, like so much great music of recent times, is born out of the creative isolation of lockdown and features Andrew Clinco, who you may know for his work with Drab Majesty. The alias they have adopted is an acronym of "Oblique Pleasures Amidst Rough Times" which they say reflected the challenges of their formation. Musically the duo is inspired by the 1960s visual art movement so embraces layered, psychedelic soundscapes with a minimalist approach and takes cues from New Wave artists like John Foxx and early OMD. OP-ART in particular focuses on analogue synthesis and gear like the Arp Odyssey and Moog Rogue while exploring time, romance, and existential themes with real emotional depth.

This emotional album explores grief, loss, and self-discovery as tracks like 'My Eyes Opened' and 'Be The Hero' showcase Harris's ambient prowess with delay-steeped electronics and intricate rhythms. Review: Shuttle358's Optimal.LP, finally available on vinyl for its 25th anniversary, is a landmark debut showcasing Dan Abrams' innovative approach to ambient glitch and dub. Abrams, immersed in the electronica scene of the 1990s, crafted a beautiful sonic landscape that blends ambient drones, delicate melodies, and digital static with remarkable sophistication. The album's juxtaposition of elements creates a tension that is both jarring and oddly soothing, inviting listeners into a world of sonic experimentation and exploration. From the rhythmic complexity of 1990s electronica to the emerging clicks'n'cuts movement, Optimal.LP stands as a landmark piece of work, informed by tradition yet visionary and idiosyncratic. Remastered by Andreas [LUPO] Lubich and featuring three previously unreleased tracks, this vinyl reissue captures the essence of Abrams' artistic vision. With new artwork by Daniel Castrejon, the album's aesthetic appeal is as compelling as its sonic depth. This is sure to be one of the best reissues in 2024 for electronica.

Review: The Hazbin Hotel soundtrack is a vibrant and eclectic collection where the series' bold and unique style is to put to vinyl. The opening track, 'Happy Day In Hell,' is a standout, blending catchy melodies with a memorable vocal performance from Erika Henningsen. It's a lively introduction that sets the tone for the show. 'Hell Is Forever' and 'Whatever It Takes' add depth to the world of Hazbin, with the former offering a fun, exposition-filled romp and the latter delivering a more heartfelt moment between Vaggie and Carmilla. Both tracks highlight the series' ability to balance humor and emotion. 'Poison' is a pop-infused gem with a catchy beat and a daring, narrative-driven context that adds a layer of complexity to Angel Dust's character. Meanwhile, 'Loser, Baby' is the crowning achievement, featuring Keith David's soulful vocals in a satisfying and narratively sweet conclusion to the first batch of episodes. Overall, the Hazbin Hotel soundtrack on red vinyl is a delightful mix of catchy tunes and character-driven moments, offering fans a unique listening experience that captures the show. It's an exciting start, with plenty of potential for even more musical magic to come.

Concert At WBAI Free Music Store (19:47)
Concert At Phill Niblock's Loft (20:04)
Review: Reissued again via Finders Keepers, Suzanne Ciani's Buchla Concerts 1975 returns again to highlight one of the best among the sublime synthstress's many live performances. The story goes that Ciani (dubbed 'the first woman on the proverbial moon' by the label) was a not-by-chance employee of the Buchla company, whom at the time were San Francisco's neck-and-neck contender to New York's Moog. Unlike the latter, Buchla refused to indulge the end user of intuitive design features like keyboards or styluses, so their products soon gained a herculean reputation. So when Ciani came along and performed this set of divinely feminine, daresay anima-rousing versions of her mentor Morton Subotnick's Silver Apples Of The Moon - to a comparatively small, stuffy, feckless and likely easily bemusable audience compared to the all-earses of today - all particulars changed thereafter. She became the first woman to publicly demonstrate the use of Buchla technology by a woman, and so one of the primordial synth sisters. A holy grail of electronic music history, this record exhumes two fantastically eerie odysseys in sound, seguing from melodious opening trips to aleatory alien burbles.

Shared Sense Of Purpose (1973 version) (4:22)
Review: 'A Shared Sense Of Purpose' is a fittingly collectively-minded name for a new Gordon Chapman-Fox aka. Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan release. The first glimpse of his latest full-length LP, Your Community Hub, this first sampler hears the artist continue to develop his totally singular vision in eerie modernist electronica, deploying lilty arpeggiations and contradictorily Utopian, yet at the same time, sinister, melodies and ambiences; all with a view to producing an uncanny deja entendu. These are deployed to mourn the slow, increasing privatisation of Chapman-Fox's native Warrington-Runcorn, specifically its singular bespoke town centre - its walkways, its local postal system, its gridded shop lots - which were all designed to make it a five-minute city, long before the concept of fifteen-minute cities had entered town planning discourse. Though, perhaps this lament masks a more sinister sense of enjoyment, as there is indeed a perverse sort of pleasure that arises in the bittersweetly uncanny perfumes that waft from this latest haunted mood piece. Perhaps just like the experience of revisiting Warrington-Runcorn after having known it in childhood, we hear both sadness and euphoria, at the same time, in the face of its ostensible loss.

Following 2020's In Search Of Ancient Civilization Vakula is back on the label with a new LP which continues his spiritual quest into less explored parts of the techno sphere. At this point many passages of 108 Mysteries edges closer to ambient or traditional music rather than techno, but a motorik pulse continues to guide everything whether explicit or implied.

Review: Peak Oil welcomes UK duo Wrecked Lightship for 'Antiposition', a debut EP on the label from the pair of Laurie Osborne (once known as Appleblim) and Adam Winchester aka Dot Product. The pair refine their sound and bring a range of innovative rhythms here with elements of dub, d&b, tribal sounds and deft sound design across hard-to-define cuts. 'Hex' is a cosmic broken techno trip, 'Bizarre Servants' is a slower and heavier dub and 'Sunken Skies' is prickly and kinetic as it flirts with live sounding drum & bass tropes and 'Diminished Ark' as well as with wispy sine waves, refracted melodies and barely there rhythms.

Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Review: You don't need to have seen the summer blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine to know exactly what it's like. Alarm bells began ringing years ago at Marvel over the decline of interest around a universe which, in cinematic terms at least, seems to have no limits or qualms about churning out product, no matter the quality. Things have got worse since, albeit with a few exceptions - like the Deadpool franchise. The wisecracking anti-hero's flicks go for a more adult jugular than many comic book adaptations, and therefore the character makes an ideal partner for the X-Men's blade-fingered menace, Wolverine. Together, they make an odd couple that were never going to be in a straight-up superhero talkie. Instead, it's tangible tongue-in-cheek at times, lighting paced, and delightfully self-aware stuff that needs a soundtrack running between over-cooked chart emo to classic croonerville, 1980s pop rock to rousing r&b. Here you go then.

Review: Desire shares Escape, their new album written and recorded in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California. Inspired by the ultra-vivid world of 1970s giallo films, they wrote the soundtrack of their dreams using their favourite musical instruments: Minikorg, Jupiter 8, 909, Mellotron, Simmons Rhythm Modules, String Machine, a D-50 & Fender Rhodes. Though the set of inspirations are half a century old, the actual sound of this 13 track EBM, Italo and synthpop monster is decidedly contemporary, preferring wompy, sidechainer kick-carriers and basses abuzz, while huge gated impacts collide with steamier intakes of breath and glassy Italo elements. The ineffably laid-back quality of synthwave and pop blends well with the noirer, gothic components and are nicely joined together via the giallo theme.

Songs like the ever-green classic 'Just Can't Get Enough' resonate with irresistible signature sounds while Dave Gahan's charismatic vocals and Martin Gore's evocative melodies still sound like nothing else. If you're a fan of the production of songs like 'Mantra', then this project is for you. Still keeping the witty elements from 'Topical Dancer' the LP, a reference to a great emperor of Chinese history, 'Completely Half' opens up with Pupuls hallmark 80s synthpop style, partnered with the typically Belgian cerebral approach to music and allusions to his mixed-race heritage. Pupul's beats feel pensive, yet danceable and the more deep-in-thought cuts like 'Goodnight Mr Yi' benefit from they dynamic contrast with more in-your-face cuts like the blaring 'Kowloon' and its siren-like supersaws.

Review: The late great Muslimgauze is a cult figure when it comes to experimental electronic music. He made several revered records that have been reissued since his death and helped to reassert his status. Maroon is a work that like much of his output brings space, colour, depth, and illusion to sound. It is densely layered and textured and finds Bryn Jones, the Mancunian behind Muslimgauze, assaulting all the senses. From the rusty sounds and smeared voices of 'Thimble Cups Of Urdu' to the dense collage of drones, tin pot hits and obscured mutterings of 'Harem Of Dogs' this is a brilliantly idiosyncratic work.

Review: Dark Entries picks up Severed Heads yet again for Ear Bitten, a double LP reissue of some of the band's earliest material. Pegged as early pushers of the Australian underground industrial scene, Severed Heads emerged in the wake of a former project also shared between three members, Tom Ellard, Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright: Mr. And Mrs. No Smoking Sign. The edgier name Severed Heads was also, conveniently, snappier, and the sonic result of this resignal act would soon prove it a good decision. Though they say they aimed simply to take after forebears like Throbbing Gristle or Suicide, Ear Bitten proves much more than the simple fact of stylogeny. The 22-track record was born of an anarchic assemblage of found domestic and street-larked objects (as well as specialist musical instruments) blurring the lines between the two: using every sound-making tool from cassette deck, to rare Korg or Kawai synth, to proverbial pots and pans, to open-reel (and thus implicatively fuckable-with) dictaphones, Ear Bitten offers a diabolical vision of the sheer, wordless length of the post-punk deserts parched by their 70s, New York precursors.

Review: Orboretum: The Orb Collection is a comprehensive 2xCD set curated by Dr Alex Paterson, showcasing the evolution of The Orb's sound across three decades. This collection not only revisits classic tracks from their pioneering days but also highlights recent gems from Abolition Of The Royal Familia (2020) and Prism (2023), acclaimed as some of their finest work. This "director's cut" reimagines The Orb's extensive catalog, juxtaposing tracks from different eras to reveal a continuous thread in their music. Known for their ambient house and psychedelic influences, The Orb's work has consistently pushed boundaries, from their groundbreaking 1991 debut album to their latest releases. This collection serves as both a tribute to their past and a celebration of their ongoing innovation in electronic music.

Review: A founder member of Ultravox and all round synth pop godfather sits at the piano on his lonesome here, after many years of collaborating with Harold Budd and Ruben Garcia. The Arcades Project is a step backward into more refined, quiet artistry and minimal compositions with a candlelit late-night vibe and engaging and emotional flow. A text by Walter Benjamin formed part of the inspiration for the work and is "a sort of stroll through new ideas emerging from the city life of Paris in the 19th and early 20th century." The resulting sounds delightfully airy and inquisitive.

Recorded live at La Maison de la Radio's grand auditorium on November 18, 2023, in Paris, this concert epitomizes a fusion of classical and electronic music. Fitoussi's interpretation breathes new life into Mahler's masterpiece, enriching it with contemporary sensibilities while preserving its timeless essence. With this release, Obliques invites listeners on a transcendent journey through sound, celebrating the convergence of past and present in the realm of symphonic expression.

Review: California's James Bernard is a much-loved regular on this label as well as being a veteran of the wider ambient scene who has been hard at it for more than three decades. His latest outing on Past Inside The Present with Anthene (aka Brad Deschamps of Toronto) is Soft Octaves, an album that finds them crafting a series of sounds using electric six-string bass. It has a huge range from the deepest depths to the wispiest of highs and each of the tracks here was recorded in one single take. The results are spellbinding indeed and the range of the bass's sonic ability is astonishing as it sounds at times like a cello, at others woodwind and is always intriguing.

Review: The High School Musical 2 soundtrack elevates the teen pop genre with its slick production aimed squarely at radio appeal. Transitioning from the more organic feel of its predecessor, this album embraces a polished sound that grows on you with repeated listens. Zac Efron takes the vocal reins as Troy, bringing a distinctively different but commendable sound compared to the first film. Standout tracks include the fun and catchy group numbers 'What Time Is It?' and 'All for One,' alongside the infectious Chad/Ryan duet 'I Don't Dance,' which blends hip-hop with jazzy swing. Another highlight is 'Bet on It,' a glossy boy band-style anthem that perfectly captures Troy's turmoil. The ballads, especially 'You Are the Music in Me,' offer sweet harmonies without being overly sappy, providing a nice contrast to the upbeat numbers. Overall, this soundtrack is a vibrant collection that will delight fans and get them singing along, presented beautifully on blue vinyl for collectors.

Review: John Williams' iconic soundtrack for Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom remains a classic amongst soundtrack fans as it captures the adventurous spirit of the film in every note. With thrilling orchestrations and memorable motifs, Williams once again proves his mastery in cinematic composition from the exhilarating 'The Temple Of Doom' theme to the haunting 'Slave Children's Crusade,' each track transports you in an instant to the heart of the action-packed adventure. The score's ability to evoke a sense of danger, excitement, and wonder is unparalleled and that makes this a must-have for fans of film music and Indiana Jones aficionados alike.

Review: Windy & Carl's album Consciousness encapsulates the duo's exploration of ambient and drone music with a warmer, more pastoral feel compared to their previous works. Absent are the vague dread and claustrophobia, replaced by buoyant soundscapes that evoke sense of tranquility. The song titles themselves, such as 'The Sun' and 'Elevation,' reinforce this lighter tone. 'The Sun' opens the album with simple yet direct electric guitar chords, setting the stage for the serene journey ahead. Even tracks like 'Balance (Trembling)' touch on darker shadings but quickly transition to glowing, comforting tones. Tracks like 'Elevation' and 'The Llama's Dream' contribute to the dream-like atmosphere of the album, with shimmering tones and ethereal vocals adding to its hallucinatory quality. 'Resolution' concludes the album with a final, contemplative note. Consciousness shows Windy & Carl's dedication to perfecting the drone. While there may not be a major departure in style, the album is commitment to crafting immersive sonic experiences. For fans of ambient and drone music, Consciousness is another great album to have and enjoy.

Review: US ambient maestro zake and vocalist Angela Winter exchanged ideas for a whole year in the course of putting together this, this debut collaboration. It comes as a numbered CD with a download code and is, according to zake, "the perfect orchestration between two individuals at the right moment." We agree as it beautifully navigates a realm between the terrestrial and cosmic with organic drones and ethereal vocals fort and centre. The likes of 'Terminal Sleep' contrasts dynamic drones with introspective moments while 'Advent' offers harmonic pulses and sculpted vocals as Winter's instinctive responses to everyday sounds enrich the album's allure. A perfect soundtrack to quiet introspection, Mid Sky is another gem in a long line of them from this label.

Review: Past Inside The Present proudly shares the release of The Worlds We Leave Behind, the second full-length record from the duo of Zake (aka. Zach Frizzell) and Tyresta (aka. Nick Turner). Building on both quotidian and profound contrasts and blurring their associations - Turner's day job as a Chicago social worker, Frizzell's reverent interest in the sublimities of natural lansdcapes - this record continues the theme already played up by the pair's earlier collaborative efforts, that of personal strife and experiential wisdom, which colour the impressions we derive from our environments. Being a "spiritual sequel" to the pair's first album Drift (2023), the album educes long, heavy-set, gut-fluttering ambient montages, from aphasic, fragmentary titles, such as 'The Worlds We Leave Behind' and 'You Will Become A Song'.

Review: zake's untouchable ambient imprint Past Inside the Present revisits James Bernard's classic 1994 album Atmospherics and has remastered it and paired it with some fresh reinterpretations by bvdub, a longtime friend and collaborator. Since the original release, music and technology have evolved significantly but the timeless craft and rich textures of Bernard's work remain evident. Atmospherics achieved cult status during the ambient music boom after being crafted solely with a keyboard, sequencer, 12-bit sampler, drum machine, and bass guitar, all created in real-time and without edits. Bvdub's reinterpretations honour the originals while adding new dimensions and infusing them with a melancholic air that enhances its emotional depth.

Review: The finale of the original trilogy had it all, sewers, blimps, mysterious invisible CGI bridges, you name it! What it also had was an incredible soundtrack, now reissued here to commemorate its 35th anniversary. Although Temple of Doom was another box office hit, critical reactions were heavily mixed and it obviously affected director Steven Spielberg enough that he spent a couple extra years on completing the Indiana Jones trilogy. John Williams of course returns with a lot of new themes - there are a couple of artifact themes this time around, both evoking a strong religious feeling, without any of the ominous feeling that some of the other movies' soundtrack have. The first is the primary Grail theme, which appears in the travel cue portion of 'X Marks the Spot.' Most of its appearances were absent on the original album, but restored here. In the case of Indiana Jones, the music is almost as important as the movies - and the Last Crusade was one of the emost original and in depth soundtracks in the series.

MPU101 has served up a few of these EPs before and they always find them coax plenty of magic out of their analogue machines. 'TEAM 700_76' is a nice and bleary-eyed post-Blade Runner soundtrack, 'BLOCK-1_2AREA666' has a darker undercurrent of menace, 'TrailerparkBeauty' brings some twinkling celestial keys and 'Sunset Memories' closes on frazzled chords that speak of heat damage from a scorching sun.

Review: American composer and sound engineer Adam Wiltzie, may not yet be a household name in electronic music yet but it's a safe bet you have heard projects that he has been involved in. Adam is one half of the highly regarded ambient and drone project Stars Of The Lid for the past 30 years and also worked with many popular rock and indie bands as an engineer as well as done composing for film and TV. Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentathol is the name for his first all original material for a full album. Last year in 2023 brought the untimely death of Stars Of The Lid partner Brian Mcbride. However, Adam's relationship with Kranky records is as strong as ever and that's where his first solo album finds a home. The music is inspired by a recurring dream Adam had where the music he composes makes people die. The music blends heavy emotions from ruin to absolute beauty. A powerful album that has extreme depth and cinematic expansiveness. We hope this will be the start to a very productive solo career that will continue his excellent work that was done with Stars Of The Lid.

Rental is a Scottish pioneer of DIY electronic music who played a key role in shaping the UK's countercultural sound alongside collaborators like Thomas Leer and Daniel Miller. Though he released little solo music, his 1979 cassette Mental Detentions was a standout of the era that featured raw demos made with budget equipment like a Roland drum machine and Stylophone keyboard. Tracks like 'Stuck' offer a distorted take on the classic motorik sound, while 'Vox' delivers an 18-minute ambient journey in which it is easy to get lost. Rental's work captures the spirit of experimentation and innovation in the face of limited resources.

Nevertheless, the spirit and aesthetic quality of the group has remained largely unchanged, and this is immediately apparent the moment they walk out in front of a crowd. Another Lonely Night: Live At The Palalido Milan Italy May 27th 1981 captures some of that magic, and really makes it clear that Kraftwerk's live sets are as tight as their performance is regimented. The men machines living up to their reputations as living metronomes. Boasting some of their best loved tracks - 'The Model', 'Computer Love', 'Radioactivity' - alongside some refreshingly less prominent tunes, it's well worth a dive into.

Rock Rendez Vous: Musica Moderna Portuguesa 1985-1986 is the sound of a legendary club which opened in 1980 and helped to usher in a new wave of sound for local emerging bands. They drew from national musical identity and fused it with contemporary international influences and came up with some of the prime indie tunes you hear here, from brooding post-punk 'Levante' from Jovem Guarda to more playful and Balearic-laced synth-pop stunners like D. W. Art's 'Mate'. This one is perfectly presented with a double-sided insert featuring lyrics and liner notes.

Review: Shanghai-based, Malaysian-born artist Tzusing offers us a future-facing and experimental techno record that also serves as a meditation on "China's complicated history of patriarchal heteronormativity, and how these archaic double standards continue to dominate the culture in pervasive, often invisible ways." It is packed with dancefloor highlights after a deep-thinking cultural monologue to start with. Hard and funky drums, twisted sonics, manic uptempo bangers and wheezing voices and downtempo rhythms all combine into something utterly unique.

Review: Orb offshoot project Sedibus has proved popular with fans for two reasons: it reunites Alex Paterson with Andy Falconer, who worked extensively with the Orb between 1990 and 1994, and the music they make recalls some of the pair's best moments of that period - albeit with a quite different instrumentation. Seti, the pair's sophomore album, has been described by their label, Cooking Vinyl, as "ambient unplugged". That only tells half the story. While it does boast all manner of acoustic instruments - sitar, guitar, piano, tabla and other percussion - it also features Paterson's trademark spoken word snippets and the dreamiest of electronic chords and aural textures. With beautiful, immersive and typically lengthy compositions, it feels and sounds like a grown-up version of the Orb's mightiest early 90s work.

Review: A mythical collaborative live album - documenting an appearance shared between Brian Eno, Can's Holger Czukay and J. Peter Schwalm in 1998 - Sushi! Roti! Reibekuchen! is a three-hour ambient kraut improvisation, which first coincided with Eno's then hot-topic multimedia light installation at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, known as the Future Light-Lounge Proposal. Schwalm prepared ideas for the session and guests ate the three foods from the event and album's title; this provided sufficient, but slow-burning energy to fuel the intense whorls, feedback freakouts, snake-charmer melodies and metrically challenging rhythms that make up its sound.

Review: A selection of fifteen pieces from the soundtrack of the cult anime Dragon Ball Z, on a limited 2xLP edition, fully licensed, including the main opening track 'CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA'. This soundtrack accompanies the anime's key moment in which Dragon Ball Z resumes five years after Son Goku's wedding. Radditz, a mysterious warrior, arrives on Earth to find Goku, who learns that he comes from a planet of warriors from a planet of warriors, of which only four remain. The plot is based on a succession of increasingly strong opponents to be fought, but there's often a quest or travel motif that adds interest beyond the duels. All this, and more, is bolstered by this electrifying soundtrack edition.

Review: One may easily shorten the Light Sounds Dark label name to LSD. So too does this new V/A compilation of dark industrial soundscapes by the label befit the bad trip. With minimal release info besides an ardent confirmation by an unnamed witness - "definitely a trip into a darker dimension" - the notion of ingesting LSD takes on a whole new meaning here. The otherwise absence of info motivates some detective work: a stained-glass design on the front cover; a title referencing Indo-European paganism and/or Zoroastrianism; intense cloud-sonics and glassy chamber spaces on the ensuing tracks; everything intuitively fits, though we're not quite sure how. Some way to a narrative revelation emerges on track four, though at best it's a speak n' spell numbers station voice, half-lost under the solemn, soily noise scramble beneath. The trip only grows weirder, with strange bird calls melding into gong sounds and pan flutes on the lossy eighth track, and the closing locked groove spelling ultimate doom for the more harmonically inclined.

Review: The cream of contemporary ambient dub, Civilistjavel! (Tomas Boden), is back on the scene with Brodfoda. Through twelve roman numerical movements titled I through XII, the initially anonymous artist makes a subtle affective turn here. Earlier commanding the interest of the now sadly felled Low Company trunk - one of the best seedlings of which has to be the FELT imprint - Brodfoda sacrifices Boden's earlier emphasis on dubiously emotive but still progressive dub pieces in favour of a deeper mood-disclosure; a more expansive, but still demure, dozen tracks of grained-out audio-sepias and cathartic vocal swells, which creep up on the listener like latent realisations, as though they were always there somewhere in the mix-murk. The vocal contributions, this time from Mayssa Jallad and Laila Sakini, as ever lie among the most welcome contributions to Civilist's output, with 'IX' portraying an especially towering sense of depth, awestruck palpation.

Review: Mirror Phase marks the conclusion of Jonas Munk's ambient trilogy, a series that has seen him explore the subtleties of soundscapes crafted from guitar and synthesiser loops. These eight tracks bring Munk back to the warmer tones often associated with his earlier work, shaping sonic structures that ebb and flow, much like clouds shifting in the sky. The title track, 'Mirror Phase', stands out as his most expansive drone composition to date. Over its nearly 18-minute runtime, oscillating tones move in and out of sync, creating a constantly evolving and mesmerising pattern. 'Transition' offers something gentler, layering guitars to evoke the sensation of waves lapping against the shore. Meanwhile, 'At a Distance' leans into the eerie and hypnotic, with slightly out-of-tune analogue synthesisers giving the track a krautrock flavour reminiscent of Popol Vuh. The shimmering tones of 'Rise' and the closer, 'Return to Nowhere', recall Munk's past work as Manual, blending glistening textures with a serene undercurrent. It's an album that's less about instant gratification and more about gradual immersion. The pieces evolve slowly, rewarding patient listeners with subtle shifts in mood and atmosphere. By the end of this trilogy, Munk seems to have fully embraced the minimalism and expansive soundscapes that have defined his ambient explorations, culminating in what might be his most refined and cohesive ambient work yet.

Radials (part 2) (22:35)
Review: For AI-38, Italian duo LF58 (Giuseppe Tillieci and Filippo Scorcucchi) present 'Radials', a live recording captured in Venice. The EP centres around a site-specific performance that translates the visual themes of the homonymous exhibition by Roman artist group Sbagliato for the 2023 Biennale Architettura. Sbagliato's installation, set within the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, explores the manipulation of architectural spaces, creating optical illusions that challenge perceptions of reality. The venue's loggia, with its five archways overlooking the Canal Grande, is a key focus, giving rise to a repeated, disorienting visual effect. LF58's sound design mirrors these concepts, using quadraphonic audio to create an immersive, spatial soundscape. Opening with the ambient noise of running water and city sounds, 'Radials' quickly shifts into more abstract territory, with shimmering frequencies and layered textures evoking the exhibition's interplay of space and perspective. The sound moves fluidly, capturing the sensation of shifting dimensions and altered realities.

Review: You had us at hello. Or at least you had us at weird French sounds from the 1970s, a decade that played a pivotal role in modernising musical processes, techniques and instruments, among other things. With names like Gilbert Becaud & Christian Gaubert, Jean Schwarz, Jacky Chalard & Gilbert Deaez and Alain Goraguer, those more in tune with this era in Gallic sound culture will know this is going to be a varied ride. Hence we open on 'The Organization', a piece that nods to the classical heritage of screen scores and captures the laidback attitude of the late-1960s perfectly, before moving through a wealth of styles, including proto-New Wave, post-punk, Kraut and meditative moods. For want of a better description. Nothing you won't have encountered before, but certainly pushing in new directions at the time.

Review: Now here's a rarity for you. Not even many of the most committed megafans know that Brian Eno, Holger Czukay and J.Peter Schwalm, accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, performed a secret live music show, outside the esteemed Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the city of Bonn, in August 1998. Forming a part of the opening party of Eno's Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation, this furtively-recorded album hears an exclusive slice of incidental "high-altitude food music", of course made during Brian Eno's airborne ambient era. Now reissued via Gronland, this five-piece cut of sophisti-ambi-krauttronica makes for a welcome surprise.

Waking Up Dizzy On A Bastion (19:09)
Review: On limited yellow vinyl comes the latest LP from the elusive ambient moniker known as Abul Mogard - impossibly distant, impossibly close - this time made in collaboration with equal and match, Rafael Anton Irisarri. Having made friends serendipitously at the sold-out opening of the SoundSet Series at Madrid's Condeduque cultural center in 2023, at which they performed together for the first time, the duo's encore that evening compelled them to get their heads down and commit to a collaborative studio session. What followed was an intense, modular-synthetic jam that, in its final studio-polished incarnation, unfurls and ripples like dark pond water. Both tracks, most notably 'Waking Up Dizzy on a Bastion', slow-burns into the heights of glory and tearful sentiment, as if capturing the feeling of time slowing down when confronted with death in the heat of fortressed battle.

Review: The irrepressible Past Inside The Present is back with the second in a trilogy of tape loop experiments from T.R. Jordan. This is the limited and hand-numbered CD format and is another cohesive piece of this three-suite puzzle. All of the music was made by the same materials and methods and was all made in "a concentrated period of inspired experimentation with no energy wasted." The artist calls it a form of "musical composting" and the music is full of a sense of musical grace and elegance, peaceful pads and sonic versions of pastoral scenes like flowing rivers and mossy rocks under beautiful wispy clouds.

Mixing monologues, interviews, protest songs, and site recordings with raw kosmische synth music, the pair crafts a mesmerising audio collage. Chaotic yet harmonious, disorienting yet soothing, the album reflects dedication, passion, and the spirit of change. Originally a limited CDR release in 2021, it quickly became a highlight in Arv & Miljo's discography. Review: The relentless ambient powerhouse that is Past Inside The Present is back with more escapist beatless magic, this time in CD form from Illinois-based Innesti who serves up his Diaphanous album. Featuring fourteen tracks, the album is characterised by its delicate use of field recordings and sparse layers, all of which are designed to evoke feelings of nostalgia and wonder. Pieces like 'We Turn Into Stories' and 'Souvire' create expansive, atmospheric soundscapes, with drones that rise and fall like distant echoes. Innesti's use of hand-built electronic instruments adds a unique touch as he blends natural and digital sounds into a fresh new whole. As a result, Diaphanous captures the often fleeting and ethereal nature of memory and experience in a storytelling soundtrack - and one that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: Nothing was as new and exciting as a synthesiser in the 70s and 80s. For forward-thinking adverts in particular, electronic sounds were essential. TV producers and advertisers sought to use music akin to "Tubular Bells," Tomita, and Jean Michel Jarre and so music libraries like De Wolfe, Bruton, Parry, and Chappell quickly adapted. Compiled by Bob Stanley, new album 'Tomorrow's Fashions' features advertising jingles, TV themes, and space exploration tracks with beatless ambience from that very era. Despite being 40-50 years old, the music feels fresh and finds jazz veterans like Brian Bennett and John Cameron embracing synthesizers. This electronica predated new age and ambient music, and also influenced pop, early Human League, and Warp Records as well as being sampled by MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar.

Review: The Italian Library Songbook series is back with its second volume, offering a fresh take on hidden gems from Italy's soundtrack legends. This 7" sees beat-maker Moonbrew and composer Paolo Apollo Negri reimagine Piero Umiliani's 'Nel Villaggio,' originally featured on his 1975 library album Continente Nero. Side A, titled 'As If It Matters,' introduces a new dreamlike track where Tilde's delicate vocals float over a hypnotic marimba sample, blending with synths and a modern beat. Side B revisits the original instrumental, staying true to Umiliani's signature sound. With artwork by Luca Barcellona, this 7" is a beautiful tribute to the timelessness of Italian library music.

Review: September 23rd is the first release in William Basinski's new Arcadia Archive series. Recorded in September 1982 in his first loft in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, September 23rd is a recently unearthed early entry in what has become a hugely inspirational and influential catalogue. Built from a piano piece that Basinski composed in high school in the mid-1970s, September 23rd quickly evolved into a vastly different work, upon its revisitation. Using the John Giorno and William Burroughs cut-up technique, Basinski fabricated an elaborate Frippertronics and feedback loop tape delay system, resulting in the quiet but dramatic set of sounds and resounds you hear here.

This is a numbered audiophile vinyl version (including a download code limited to 150 copies) of Veta, which is a world of smoky half-tones that mix up modern ambient classical with analogue production. Following their 2020 breakthrough, the trio faced significant changes from leaving Minsk to headlining global shows. Settling in Los Angeles, they crafted their fourth album, Belaya Polosa, which symbolises transformation during tough times and celebrates the digital pulse of the 90s. The album combines sombre dance floor anthems with vibrant reinventions and tracks like 'Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh' Kto Ya,' 'Son,' and 'Belaya Polosa' showcase how they have moved their sound along to blend post-punk, synth textures, and melodic sophistication while maintaining their distinctive minimalist style.

Having shuttled between each locale for inordinate stretches of time, their latest record - the whimsically Christened slif slaf slof - nonetheless bridges these local poles. A breezy homage to the duo's shared ideal excesses - an interest in fantasy folk, costume, absurdist nature, surrealist scatting - the likes of 'Ceili', 'Tiny Gymnast' and 'Chaperone' are liable to solicit all manner of reactions in the listener, from on-the-spot bouncing to full-frontal gyrating. A sorely difficult to place record, merging motifs of indie, freak folk, and a decidedly DFA experimentalism.

Review: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - or OMD - made a magnificent comeback with History of Modern back in 2010, an album released at the peak of a synthpop revival, and this reissue is timely in that it arrives on the crest of another wave of synth-heavy sounds in current music. Known for their lush, romantic 80s electronic music, the Liverpool outfit were at the forefront of the genre, gaining fame with hits in both the UK and the US, and this album is definitely reminiscent of other 80s releases like Junk Culture. Tracks such as 'New Babies; New Toys' and 'The Future, the Past, and Forever After' innovate and are dominated by big beats and catchy choruses. The album shines at OMD's strengths. The second part of the title track, in particular, recaptures their signature slow-dance grandeur. Overall, fans of the band at any point in their career should find something to enjoy here.

'The Shrine' sees Tutu further refine their bassbin-bothering sonic footprint, with a concise platter of smogged, hypnotic klang. The pair delve deep over eight tracks of cavernous ambiance, pummeling industrial techno and barren, windswept synthscapes, which are perfectly alluded to by Scottish painter Andrew Cranston's surreal artwork. In turns introspective and oppressive, the pair ditch their usual stylistic sensibilities for something altogether more longform and enveloping, allowing for full immersion in the cavernous soundworld. Highlights include opening wormhole 'Aora' and the deeply tense grindhouse resonances of the aptly named 'Hebust Cometh'. Wicked and bad.

Growing up in Harrow during the 70s and 80s, Biswas was influenced by David Rodigan's dub shows and the post-punk experimentation of the era. His eclectic tastes spanned punk, free jazz, noise, and Indian Classical music, which he fused with his ever expanding record collection. By 1987, his music prefigured what would become techno and gave rise to this album which was released in 1994 by Rising High Records. Here the pair work in and through the genre to produce a full-circle rainbow's worth of expanse and breadth, successfully contrasting a sense of largesse with another, counterintuitive feeling of a world stood still, time having stopped. The six-track album is an impressive, but subtle grand tour of an unblemished, alpine sublime, with the opening intenso-ambience of 'Dissolvi' recalling the work of Ben Frost, and the near-closing 'Sulle barcane' serving as the album's unique denouement, made up of cryptic environmental recordings, static washes and weightless pads.

Live at Votivkirche Wien is a follow-up of sorts - a previously unreleased recording from 1996 of the pair's show at Vienna's neo-gothic Votivkirche Wien concert hall, at which the duo made great use of the venue's natural reverb. Mixing their usual unfurling melodies and deep space chords with a mixture of gentle beats, sumptuous sound design and dubby basslines, the set ebbs and flows attractively before concluding with an inspired, stretched-out ambient techno re-interpretation of 1994 single 'Aaah!' In a word: brilliant!

Review: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, known for their remarkable work with Nine Inch Nails and film scores like The Social Network, deliver a techno-charged soundtrack for Luca Guadagnino's tennis-themed love triangle drama Challengers. The score is a pulsating mix of electroclash, synth-pop, and driving techno, expertly weaving traditional instruments with electronic beats. Reznor and Ross take Guadagnino's vision to heart, crafting a soundtrack that not only drives the narrative but also challenges expectations with its bold, rhythmic energy. Tracks like 'Compress/Repress', co-written with Guadagnino and featuring Reznor's vocals, showcase their ability to blend artistic expression with the film's themes of control and power. Overall, this is a excellent soundtrack that works well to support the visual or just listening to it without having seen the movie.

Review: Rite Here Rite Now, directed by GHOST's Tobias Forge and Alex Ross Perry, is an ambitious blend of live concert footage and narrative storytelling, picking up the threads of the band's Chapters series. This feature-length film captures GHOST's electrifying performances from their sold-out shows at Los Angeles's Kia Forum, coupled with a fictional narrative that delves deep into the band's mythos. The film promises a unique cinematic experience that melds the raw energy of live music with engaging plot elements, designed to both entertain and engage GHOST's fans into a deeper understanding of the band's artistic vision. This soundtrack to the film sets a new standard in the rock cinema genre, aiming to engage not just GHOST's dedicated followers but also lovers of innovative film-making and rock spectacle.

Review: Miami duo Coral Morphologic has linked up with Nick Leon for a debut collaboration here, Projections of a Coral City, which lands on the cultured Barcelona-based label Balmat. It's a lush listen that very much soothes mind, body and soul with its widescreen ambient synth scopes, suspensory pads and painterly strikes of sound. The mood is carefree and dreamy, occasionally rueful and introspective and always realised in a beautiful fashion. Here's hoping this might be the first of many collabs if this is the sort of work these artists can cook up together.

Featuring artwork by Kilian Eng, this red edition offers a mesmerising auditory journey. Ambient landscapes and evocative ancient ceremonies coalesce with explorations through lush jungles, tranquil acoustic melodies, and edgier dub motifs hinting at a looming dystopian future. Contributions from artists such as Diagonal, Mason Bee, and State Azure enrich its allure as the whole thing adds up to a cinematic tapestry that captivates with atmospheric depth.

Review: Laurie Anderson's latest album, Amelia, marks her first release since the well-received Landfall (2018) and is inspired by the tragic final flight of aviator Amelia Earhart, featuring 22 tracks that delve into her much storied legacy. Collaborating with the Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno, under Dennis Russell Davies, and a roster of notable musicians including Anohni and Marc Ribot, Anderson crafts a deeply evocative narrative, while the album reflects Anderson's distinct style, blending lyrical introspection with innovative soundscapes. Drawing from Earhart's personal diaries and communications, Amelia explores themes of adventure and disappearance, providing a poignant auditory journey. A renowned avant-garde artist, Anderson's career spans music, visual art, and performance, recognised for her boundary-pushing work and poetic storytelling, and this album continues her tradition of merging the beautiful with the bizarre, as well as offering a fresh perspective on an historic figure.

Review: A aka Mika Vainio's 'Fermionit' is a significant release from the late Finnish producer, who passed away in 2017. Originally featured in a Belgium Detuned 6x12 boxset just before his death, the track received critical acclaim from collectors and fans. Now, it returns to Mika's own Sahko label for a well-deserved 12" release. 'Fermionit' embodies the essence of Finnish techno with its minimalistic, cold and stark sound. The track's passive-aggressive edge showcases Vainio's signature style, blending raw, unfiltered textures with a profound sense of depth. This release not only honors Vainio's legacy but also offers a chance for new listeners to experience the pure DNA of Finnish techno. An essential listen for fans of minimalist and avant-garde electronic music.

Three obscure killer-bangers come primed and ready for the future deco dancefloor, ending not least on an epic remix by Marcel Dettmann. Review: Polypores (aka Stephen James Buckley) paints music with a modular synthesiser, drawing influence from ambient, new age and experimental electronics. Buckley's latest for Castles In Space is an impressive satchel bag held together by drawstrings of arpeggiation and harmony; the accompanying statement "There Are Other Worlds" is no less ambitious either, suggesting that this is a bottomless bag indeed, one whose opening may perhaps reveal a portal and/or gate to one of said realms. Inside, we find 'Earth 2', and through the port window we spy a misty utopia teeming with uncanny life; we float above it in harmonic serenity, unsure as to whether we should disturb the eco-tonic balance. Further fave macro-bionts include 'Virtual Forest Worlds', 'Reality Hacking' and 'Foreverglade', in which we hear various uses of generative audio and rattling, artifical-organic sounds to evoke associations of life and the creation thereof. In Buckley's own words, "I'd become hyperfixated on the idea of Alternate Reality Games, and the way that through what are essentially acts of play, a person can experience a degree of brain-change." Ours are indeed.

Review: Marina Herlop's latest album Pripyat is a striking addition to the intersection-canon of effected sound, piano and voice. Every track on the album, from 'abans abans' to the choral version of 'miu', recalls glitching piano swirls, high-intoned wail-songs, and references to every electronic-musical microgenre from lowercase to footwork to Carnatic Konnakol. For us, it's giving Bjork, chiptune and Principe, styles which are somehow all exhaled in the same breath - though maybe we should stop trying to draw too many comparisons, as Herlop brings them all neatly together in an impressive seven-track move that clearly defies overt categorization.

Review: Contrary to its ultra-crisp sound - one that suggests it could've been made today - Cetu Javu's Southern Lands was first released on Basic Mix in 1990. Catering to the largely cassette-bound underground of Barcelona at the time, Basic Mix acted as a little-known sublabel through which acts like Javu could express their best and rawest sides. Comprising Javier Revilla and Chris Demere, Cetu Javu had moved to Barcelona from Hanover, Germany - inspired by the works of Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, and Jean-Michel Jarre - and thus produced Southern Lands following a tour shared with fellow acts Wolfsheim and Blind Passengers. The album is shockingly well-made, bespeaking the power of minimal production and conservative vocal processing to achieve a crystal-clear, no less upfront, 'naked' industrial sound.

Review: At this point in his career, it seems that classically trained pianist come electronica visionary Jon Hopkins can do no wrong. Whether we're thinking of his unmistakable all-time great LP Immunity, or his more recent inward-bound journeys into a trippy serial panacea, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, the musician, in Domino's own words, is an established auteur, capable of casting a whole range of dark sonorous arts perhaps only the most storied audio wizards can cast. His latest record, Ritual, is the latest utterance to escape the Hopkins grimoire; staying true to the adage that a real magician simply does not reveal their secrets, Hopkins is deliberately cryptic about the meaning of Ritual, except for the fact that his music-making process is itself a ritual. Humbly, he insists "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing". Well, from the various sublime, epiphanic, master-warlock's evocations heard across this record, it sure doesn't sound like it!

Concert At Galeria Bonino (part 2) (11:08)
Review: Suzanne Ciani's pioneering Buchla synthesiser performances, now available on vinyl from Finders Keepers Records, represent a monumental collective moment in music history. Captured at a New York art gallery 50 years ago, this release finally brings Ciani's groundbreaking work to a global audience. As an archival project of 'art music', it redefines musical history and challenges our understanding of music technology. Ciani's Buchla Concert records aren't just gamechangers; they symbolise a musical revolution and an artistic revelation. They serve as a benchmark in the evolution of synthesiser music and highlight Ciani's role as a pioneering force in a male-dominated field. This sonic installation, along with her WBAI/Phill Niblock 1975 sessions, marks a triumphant moment in the synthesiser space race, showcasing the untold story of the first woman to explore these new musical frontiers. The album captures a genuine live act experimenting with the Buchla, a fully performable music instrument, during a time when such performances were groundbreaking. Had these recordings been released alongside those of Morton Subotnick, Walter Carlos, or Tomita, Ciani's influence would have already been recognised for its radical impact on the shape and sound of electronic music. With this release, Finders Keepers illuminates Ciani's legacy, celebrating a visionary artist whose work has remained in the shadows for too long.

The LP, crafted between Mexico City and New York, continues where his debut 'Sculpturegardening' left off, creating an ambient soundscape where nature and machines co-exist. Featuring a collaboration with Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti, this record is a journey into a future where humanity and technology evolve together. Review: Ever reticent contemporary ambient techno artist Nthng shares 'Two People', their latest EP to hit the shelves. Building on their always wordless sound - one native to a certain "mysterious" corner of the techno world, one that implies that words are insufficient in capturing both breadth and depth of sound - 'Two People' is a minimally stirring EP, one that relies on the bare associations of just two visual indicators of theme: snow, unity. Imprinted on the planar white surface shown on the front cover is a lowercase trace of the title track, which, in sound, hears a vocal recollective of a baby's gurgle, and a lonesome pad lilt that only ever so much as teases a movement, ghosted by the absence of (and so haunted by the promise of) a beat. When beats do interpellate the scape, they do with the textural quality of stalactites, breaking and dropping to the floor in step on both 'Echo Trak' and 'In Statik'. Nthng's filtrated percussion and long-release tails serve to dust the surface snow off many ambered, glaciered memories, preserved in the unspelunked caves of an antarctic psyche. Closer 'Don't Be Scared' plods forth, steppers style, with the stridency of an epiphanic polar walkabout, its swells contrasting to the many radiophonic FX peppering the mix: they give the sense of the odd "do you read me?", grounding the far-yonder miracle pads in telecommunicated reassurances from the outpost.

Review: Colin Dunkerley, aka the artist Lapsed Pacifist, navigates the world as a sound engineer by day and leaves little time for his own music. He has plenty of accolades for his work from a niche audience for his productions under the alias Negative Neutron but for years wanted to pursue a more dark ambient route. Finally, he has made time to indulge his own music-making endeavours and now presents Hypatia, an album that materialised over an extended period. It features field recordings and audio loops processed through his modular setup and takes inspiration from Marco Polo's imaginary cities and rather mirrors Dunkerley's creative journey as it evokes memories of cold, distant places and the emotions they stir.

Review: Loscil, the moniker of Canadian sound designer Scott Morgan, released his debut album Triple Point in 2001, now available on vinyl for the first time. An ambient dub concept album inspired by thermodynamics, Triple Point explores soundscapes that evoke the principles of heat and entropy. Tracks like 'Hydrogen' and 'Ampere' build from muted beats and looped synth melodies, creating an atmosphere that is clinical and stark. Morgan's talent for arranging sound is evident as he layers samples to produce a sense of intricate, microscopic processes. 'Pressure' and 'Vapour' show his ability to craft immersive environments, though the overall minimal approach. Fans of experimental electronic music will appreciate Loscil's meticulous sound design and the album's conceptual depth.

Review: A new drone collaboration for the ages comes in the form of a heads-on collision between Kevin Martin (aka. The Bug) and Joseph Kamaru (The Bug). Firmly rooted in the esoteric, nigh chthonic drones of which both are now more than adept in evincing - Martin in tandem with his many collaborative efforts with the likes of Earth, and KMRU across the likes of recent albums such as Logue - this is a six track mesmeriser whose titles recall everything from apocalypses to hidden histories, and with each piece spanning anywhere between four to eleven minutes a pop. Beginning on a slow, soil-caked march and moving further into a land of serener incantations, on which KMRU submits his vocals, Disconnect is a haunting (yet equally, it could be said, calming) record for arrested epochs.

Review: Shigeo Sekito's influential Special Sound Series Vol. 2, finally reissued on sky blue vinyl, celebrates the visionary Electone pioneer's unparalleled talent and global impact. Originally released in 1975, this seminal work showcases Sekito's talent of the Electone, blending fresh rhythms and whimsical melodies that have impressed audiences across genres - from hip-hop to dream pop. 'The Word II', a standout track famously covered by Mac DeMarco on 'Chamber of Reflection,' catapulted Sekito's music to international recognition, inspiring artists like Travis Scott and Quavo's Huncho Jack. Sekito, known also for his piano workds under the name Ken Akishino, pushed the boundaries of sound manipulation and tone color, creating compositions described as both meticulous and daringly innovative. His legacy, bolstered by this meticulously remastered reissue and accompanied by comprehensive liner notes from Chee Shimizu, continues to shape the future of Electone music, resonating deeply with enthusiasts worldwide.
