Just Begin

A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

Jungle Kitten (feat Kaidi Tatham) (7:04)
Asking Eyes (feat Vanessa Freeman) (5:03)
Review: 'Jungle Kitten' by Manfredo Fest is something of an underground classic. It features the widely admired Kaidi Tatham on synth and has a fine crew of London's best musicians also involved in the line up and now it gets a cover by Da Lata that is drenched in warmth. The a-side is as organic as they come with fluid grooves and samba styles all heavily applied next to the uplifting vocals. On the flip side is another epic one for the dance floor. It is a vital version of Rafaella Renzulli's 'Asking Eyes' featuring Vanessa Freeman that at long last lands on vinyl.

Dam Funk - "Night Stroll"
Dam Funk - "3012 Luv Affair"
Computer Jay - "Phantom"
Computer Jay - "Vice"
Computer Jay - "Rare Type"
Review: Round seven of All City's highly collectable ten inch series drops with perhaps the most impressive pairing to date. Dam Funk needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in fine music, and the Stones Throw funkateer displays all his unique talent on the two tracks that plaster the A Side. It's easy to visualise the woozy synth led snap of "Night Stroll" sound tracking a twilight sojourn through the hilly surrounds of Silverlake LA. Complementing this is the low slung sexx funk of "3012 Luv Affair", with Dam in full on organ wig-out mode. On the flip Computer Jay drops three tracks of heavy percussive heat with opener "Phantom" betraying the punk-funk intro with a spectral beatdown characterised by reverberant breaks. "Vice" showcases Jay's ease with intricate drum programming and is augmented by a fuzzed out 8 bit melody, while the oscilatting analogue drama of "Rare Type" proves to be brilliantly different.

Chez Damier - "Speechless" (Chez Damier Panorama Bar remix) (5:04)
Makez - "Rocket Music" (5:15)
Alkalino - "Rio" (Alkalino rework) (5:30)
Gledd - "Sere Yo" (5:31)
Review: Adeen Records returns with a superb EP that blends a classic with three new and fresh unreleased tracks. Deep house don Chez Damier's Panorama Bar Remix kicks off and is a a 2021 standout with a killer baseline and Spanish guitar that brings some sunny soul and makes for some top level house grooves. Makez then shines with 'Rocket Music' which has a chunky low end and glistening, golden piano chords making it a late night favourite. On the B-side, Adeen regular Alkalino delivers a tropical-infused edit for the peak time and Gledd closes with a classy cut 'Sere Yo' that is all about the drums. Lovely stuff.

Tambor De Cura

Tambor De Cura (with Guinu) (4:02)
Devotion (4:04)
Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

The Real Deal (Kai Alce NDATL instrumental) (7:27)
The Real Deal (Kai Alce alternate instrumental) (7:29)
Review: Nubian singer Dezaray Dawn has been touted as rising star on the future soul scene, though so far she's yet to make a wider impact. This single - her debut - should make an impression, not least because it was produced by one of the major players on the deep and soulful house scene, NDATL boss Kai Alce. On the A-side he delivers his full vocal version of 'The Real Deal', placing Dezaray Dawn's sweet, confident singing amidst an attractive combination of warm, organic house grooves, smoky late-night trumpet solos and languid electric piano motifs. Over on the flip you'll find an instrumental version of the A-side mix as well as an 'Alternative Instrumental', in which Alce strips the track back a little more whilst retaining its core warmth and jazzy musicality.

Review: The first release on this new American label Mashi Beats was created at the peak of the 2020 Black Lives Matter social uprisings. It's a mix of swirling spiritual jazz and swaggering hip hop beats as well as deep, sunset house music. 'Joyful Resistance' (part 1) is a lush and heart swelling opener while the smooth grooves of 'Blue Hour' sure are seductive. On the flip, '37,000 Feet' is a broken beat excursions with dazzling synth work and 'Thanks Given' closes on a smiler tip but more late night, for those cosy basement jams.

Brukstep
Review: Taken from his ninth album Church, New Zealand jazzist MDCL serves up a highly limited 7" that showcases his creative extremes. "Now Or Never", a track penned with the hugely talented Nia Andrews, is a heavily textured slice of steamy modern jazz with dense melodic layers gently slapping a lopsided come-to-bed rhythm under Nia's alluring purrs. From horny to horn-heavy, "Brukstep" is pure percussive dancefloor fair... Stomping Afrobeat drums, screaming trumpets and a groove that could easily send a dancefloor insane, it's a reminder of Mark's great versatility and groove craftsmanship.

Masina (2:23)
Mizugaki (3:49)
Review: This limited-edition, transparent seven-inch single serves as a showcase for Mark de Clive-Lowe's superb new album, Dreamweavers, a set he recorded with the assistance of bassist Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. A-side 'Masina' is as special as you'd expect, with the New Zealand-born artist adding sparkling synthesizers, breezy Latin pianos and warming Rhodes chords and motifs to a life-affirming jazz-funk groove. Flipside 'Mugzai' is a deeper, slower and more sanguine affair, though thanks to a wealth of fluid piano solos it retains the infectious breeziness that's such a feature of the impeccable A-side.

The Moments (5:05)
Dive (3:52)
Review: Patrick Wade aka Dead Horse Beats presents the Bad Hopes EP for Brooklyn boutique label Bastard Jazz. In his own words "I live in Montreal. I play several instruments and turn knobs and push buttons and stuff" and that's good enough for us! But for something a bit more in depth, we referred to the label who said he has "garnered attention for his unique brand of hazy, rhythmic, soul-styled creations" and that's a pretty fair observation. Starting out on the A side with the bubbly and blissful synthpop of "She Said" (feat Frase) there's also some sassy R&B flavour on "Young Ruins" featuring his smooth crooning vocals. On the flip, future beats and his pop tendencies collide perfectly on "Dive".

Stephane Attias - "Fairy Tales" (6:16)
Review: The Visions Recordigs (formarly known as Visions Inc) label has been defining its own grand of house music since inception in 1999. For this one the label draws on assured artistic talent from all over. Deenamic's 'Fear's manages to be a nice basement party jam but also oozes a sense of jazz-funk cool. Orlando Voorn again joins the dots between Europe and Detroit with the dancing keys and future techno soul of his magnificent 'In Deep Thoughts' and Tryezz builds the pressure on his steamy and late night 'Later Frequencies.' Morning Workouts (5:15)
Prewar Vibe (5:04)
In Love On The Balcony At Terminal 5 (5:10)
Summertime On Michigan Ave (4:57)
Review: Detroit label Choose Better Friends made an immediate impact late last year when it dropped three EPs all in the same week. We've had to wait a while for this next one but it has been worth it: Bale Defoe is on the buttons and brings some dusty Motor City house heat with opener 'Morning Workouts' which rides a bumpy, booty shaking broken beat with meaningful chords and aching vocal snatches up top. 'Prewar Vibe' brings some swinging jazz chords and cut-up drums seemingly bashed out on an MPC. There is subtle euphoria in the bursts of excitable chords and vocal fragments of 'In Love On The Balcony At Terminal 5' and plenty of humidity in the diffuse synths and bumps drum funk of 'Summertime On Michigan Ave'. It's EPs like this that keep our fascination with Detroit very much alive.

Review: Sounds Familiar return for the second release on its newly inaugurated 7 Inch Nails label with two tracks of simmering London boogie heat from UK-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Dego. Following long-time collaborator Kaidi Tatham in releasing his first 7" on the label, Dego keeps things cool on 'Drop it now! Pick it up!' - all shuffling drums, sparse synths and boogie-funk swagger. On the flip, Dego picks up the tempo for deep house roller 'Too Humid', dancing a liquid baseline between clipped synth stabs in a nod to the warmer times ahead.

Celestian Ditton (Falty DL remix)
Review: Having appeared in one form or another on labels as varied as Eglo, Neroli, Wildheart Recordings and Berceuse Heroique recently, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane adds Drew Lustman's Blueberry Records to his evergreen CV with the excellent Nuts! EP. Such a signing by the producer known as Falty DL should not be a surprise to anyone that considers themselves a real fan of Lustman's work with Dego regularly touted as a strong influence on the New Yorker's musical output. Rich in musical flavour and heavy in rhythmic impact, all three cuts from Dego here really slam home how accomplished he is as a producer with the wonderfully bugged out "Fancy A Burger" and the rugged, dusted down swing of "Celestial Ditton" vying for first place in our affections. The latter track gets a rather nice rework from Falty DL too!

Love & Hate You (feat Obenewa)
Not In My Disco
Review: 4 hero main man Dego has a new 2000 Black album up his sleeve in the shape of A Wha' Him Deh Pon? which should get the heads excited. A little taste of what to expect is proffered via this three track drop which premieres three of the tracks from the aforementioned set. The A Side is dedicated to the fizz and snap that is "Late Night Fright", all future boogie basslines spreading out over typically intricate beat programming and taut moog flourishes - you're gonna love the big piano chords that characterise the main section. On the flip the "Love & Hate" contains just as much boogie but applies it to a straighter bounce - leaving the vocalist Obenewa to shine. The bruk vibes return on the final entree "Not In My Disco" a delightful 23rd C instrumental soul swinger that is most reminiscent of 4 Hero.

Moths In Wallets (feat Mr Mensah) (5:07)
Backchat For Toprock (5:18)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

Thankfully the Illegal Jazz label treats us to a second edition that is packed with just as much joyous disco, jazz and funk heat. All four of these joints from the 70ies are masterfully reworked by Delfonic & Kapote. The first cut is a bouncy one with big chords, the second has an irresistible samba shuffle, '

Review: JAKe Detonator is a renowned graphic artist who shows another side to his skills here as he drops a slick 7" featuring two instrumental hip-hop tracks dedicated to the legendary MF DOOM. Both tracks, 'Requiem for Doom' and 'Stoneferry Morning,' were crafted during lockdown like so much good music of recent years. They are killer joints with woozy synths worming their way in and out of tough, classic boom-bap betas as dark vocal musings add extra weight. Naturally, this double A-side comes complete with full-colour artwork by JAKe himself and marks his first 45 release.

Sweetest Moaning
Review: DJ Dez aka Andres never puts out a bad beat. His hip-hop influenced house style is hugely identifiable by now and varies only a little with each new outing, but it remains compelling whether he is doing albums for Moodymann's label or turning out shorter beat studies for labels like the all new Detroit outlet Papaya Records. This one opens with the trilling chords and punchy kicks of 'Sweetest Pain' complete with a beautifully aching vocal sample and sun kissed guitar riffs. The flip side is a hyper speed juke-esque joint with churchy chords and another great vocal. They both make for a vital 7".

Prosciutto Smile (DJ Goce edit) (4:01)
Review: Although his vinyl releases are sporadic at best, DJ Goce has rather a good track record when it comes to breathing new life into classic cuts - as was proved by last year's excellent outing on Dusty Donuts. The Russian producer is at it again here, opening his account with a fine rework of Gil Scott-Heron classic 'The Bottle' in which the poet-turned-musician's iconic vocal rides an attractive bed of head-nodding hip-hop beats, boogie style synth-bass, fluttering flutes and shimmering synth sounds. In contrast, 'Prosciutto Smile' delivers an excellent re-edit of an organ-sporting chunk of break-driven jazz-funk deepness that's arguably even more potent than the A-side.

Review: Last seen on vinyl dabbling in music inspired by '70s Swedish erotica for a Golf Channel boxset aimed at the more well heeled collectors, DJ Nature returns with the first of two 12" samplers to accompany the recent Let The Children Play mini album on Jazzy Sport. Initially released on CD and digital formats in March, it's nice to see Nature's music finally find it's natural format and this first sampler contains two absolute gems. "Let The Children Play" is a deep jazz throbber pitched at just the right beatdown tempo to accentuate the lazy feeling of the sampled horns. In truth "Why Not" doesn't really deviate too far from the path laid down on the A Side, though the groove is that bit more hypnotic.

This first EP is a dazzling disco affair from Jehan and Donnie Moustaki who takes us into deep and atmospheric territory from the off with a lush intro. Moustaki then goes solo for the shuffling, dischevilled kicks of "Saturninan Beer", before Jehan's "Lady 2000" gets loose and lithe on some live drum sounds and serious jazz chords. "Cool Man Nazz" is a steamy late night collab and "Rock Bottom" is Moustaki's final solo cut - a fresh fusion of jazz funk, disco and house into an organic groove to die for.

Rise (Yam Who? rework)
Rise
Namaste
Review: Futuristica’s latest release is by one of the UK's most talented producers Ohaji Kamara. The sound is crisp, tight and very soulful. Up there with any contemporary beat maker, you can easily compare him to the late J-Dilla, Spinna, Spacek and even Pete Rock. Joining Kamara on this debut single is an equally talented singer/songwriter Deborah Jordan, who is not only the vocalist for one of the best soul/broken beat groups at the moment, Silhouette Brown, but also fronts the contemporary jazz super group Robert Mitchell's Panacea. She has also graced tracks recently for Bugz In The Attic, Unforscene, Uschi Classen and Max Cole. The original title track 'Rise' is sparse, lush and incredibly soulful but remix kings Yam Who? twist it into a broken boogie dancefloor monster with the dirtiest bass line in years. The bonus cut, 'Namaste', is a deep trip into the world of future hip hop. Second single to follow soon.

Review: Matt Lord has been working on and off with the 2000 Black crew since the early 2000s, though it's only in recent years that he's stepped out of the shadows. He first officially collaborated with Dego on a joint EP in 2018, the rather fine One Way To Another, and here the pair reunite for another jaunt through jazz-funk-influenced EP rich in rubbery bass guitar lines, jammed-out keys, and on EP standouts 'Mandarin Delight' and 'Bee Side Inside', fizzing disco synths and guitars. Yet while those two flipside cuts draw heavily on disco and boogie for inspiration, the rest of the EP revolves around broken beats, with Lord and Dego adding their jazzy and funky touches to heavy bruk-up rhythms.

Render Me (Andres remix)
Render Me (Andres remix instrumental)
Render Me (Scruff 12" re-tweak)
Render Me (Royalty & AD Bourke remix)
Review: Culled from the opening moments of Mr Scruff's recent collaboration-heavy Friendly Bacteria long player, "Render Me" now has a chance to shine in the spotlight on a 12" that comes brandishing some true dancefloor potential. That's thanks in no small part to the pair of Andres remixes that hog the A-Side with the drummer from Detroit showcasing to the maximum why he's getting more and more remix commissions these days. In his hands "Render Me" becomes a languid, jazz brushed delight with the main version that bit better thanks to the retention of the vocals from Denis Jones. The Scruffster gets involved too, with a moody yet organic feeling 2-step 12" re-tweak on the flip which sits well next to Royalty and AD Bourke's total bomb of a remix that turns the track into widescreen electro-pop with extra Chicago house fizz for good measure.

DFRA - "Nitewax" (8:46)
Keymono - "Jazzed Out" (5:57)
Review: Four artists with a taste for classic deep house infused with more than a touch of house line on the Silver Walker label's sixth release. Following releases on the likes of Local Talk, Balance, Traxx Underground, Mate, Quintessentials and upcoming projects on Nervous and NDATL, Shaka opens proceedings with a flurry of Hammond and plenty of exotic percussion, lie Alan Hawkshaw riffing with Underground Resistance. Glenn Davis (Wolf, Yore Records, Deeper Groove and Selections Records) delivers a deeper house workout on the A2 house track, the jazzy keyboard chords, fluttering flute and restless synths working real magic. One of the masterminds behind the Silver Walker label, Diego aka DFRA, comes on all perky with the saxes and soloing Rhodes, on the second side's opener, 'Nitewax'. Then we close with Damien aka Keymono (founder of several labels including Monocturne Records and Funkyshirts) laying on the handclaps of classic disco strings, the snippets of funk guitar and vibes the cherry on top.

What's Going On?
What's Going On? (Rob Hardt mix) (4:29)
What's Going On? (Toddi Reed & Terri Green original mix) (4:25)
Review: Before the global pandemic, the Terri Green Project and Cornell 'CC' Carter planned to collaborate on a cover version of Marvin Gaye classic 'What's Going On?' That collaboration has now finally seen the light of day, and the finished version features a wealth of other independent soul artists in supporting roles. In its original Toddi Reed and Terri Green mix form (side B), the track is a warm, groovy, head-nodding update of the conscious soul favourite, with the variety of voices on show only emphasizing the power of the song's infamously on-point lyrics. Rob Hardt's A-side mix, a slicker and more musically detailed affair featuring a more prominent bassline, sweeping synth-strings and positive piano parts, is arguably even better.

Review: Wah Wah is proud to announce the vinyl reissue of one of the best Hammond organ-fuelled lps from the swingin' London years.
The talented organist Dave Davani and his group were a regular act at top clubs like the Flamingo and the Ricky Tick, sharing
the spotlight with other top British names such as Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, Graham Bond
Organization, Artwoods, Georgie Fame or even US heavyweights like Jimmy McGriff. The superb 'Fused!' lp, originally released
by Parlophone in 1965, is a killer sample of what Davani and Co. delivered in the sweaty, smoky night clubs of London that year.
First class Hammond-powered mod jazz and R&B, deeply rooted in the sounds of the fab Jimmy McGriff, 'Big' John Patton, Brother
Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith soul jazz albums imported from the US at the time. From the top opening track, an organ-ized version of
the classic Miles Davis track 'Milestones', to the last groove of the record this one will please everybody into swingin' soul jazz sounds.
Reissued on vinyl format for the first time, you have a chance to grab yourself a copy of this goodie at a reasonable price - but only
for a while, since it has been licensed for a 1000 copies run and great albums like this do not last long on the shelves. An exact
repro of the original Parlophone lp, upgraded with cool liner notes written for the occasion by today's Hammond maestro Nick Rossi.

Review: Shiver me timbers. Wasn't quite expecting such a brilliant LP when we ordered this. Unsung Disco Hero from Camden (New Jersey that is), with tracks recorded between 1979 and 1982. The tag Disco just doesn’t quite fit with this LP, an electrifying excursion into experimental sounds musically constructed into varying styles of plain good music. Also has a remix from Kenny Dope in there somewhere. Has to be heard to be believed.
