Review: Whispering Signals label head Daniel Danieli presented its first release last year, which receives a much needed reissue here. The Aachen based producer delivers a sublime journey through the deeper spectrum of dub techno on the haunting 'Jalada' which meanders down a cavernous and glacial path. Several remixes are included, with acclaimed Scandinavian producer Sebastian Mullaert injecting the track with more dancefloor dynamics, while remaining respectful of the original's aesthetic. Over on the flip, Feral's Night Vision rework had us impressed, where he took the track into cerebral realms of hypnotic techno - which the Italians are true experts at

Review: By our reckoning Morkret, Kylan, Tystnaden & Ensamheten is the eighth long player Jonas Ronnberg and Michel Isorinne have issued together as Dard A Ranj Fran Det Hebbershalska Samfundet in the past two years. Impressive work, more so given how productive Ronnberg is in his other musical endeavours these days. Recorded live in Hebbershalet, Sweden late 2014, this latest D.A.R.F.D.H.S. adventure sees the pair once again traversing the frosty ambient soundscapes across seven tracks that will delight and intrigue the more open minded of electronic music followers. From start to finish, Morkret, Kylan, Tystnaden & Ensamheten is an immersive affair with only the occasional concession to anything resembling a beat - "Ensam I Vasa" and "Tystnaden & Ensamheten" are both quite beautiful.

Review: Hands up who gets the vintage sci-fi reference in Trevor Jackson's latest production alias? For the non-nerds amongst us, Dark There Were & Golden-Eyed is the name of both a legendary short story by Ray Bradbury and a famous London sci-fi bookshop of the 1970s. Musically, the three tracks Jackson has served up this time round tend towards the stripped-back and synthesizer-heavy. They were apparently recorded between 2010 and 2014 using a minimalist set-up of handpicked pieces of analogue gear. While the B-side contains a couple of formidably dark, odd and curious, soundtrack style excursions, it's the epic A-side, "Design Your Dreams" - a fluid, loved-up and hypnotic blend of Terry Riley style cyclical synthesizer motifs and subtle percussion - that stands out.

Review: The NOID imprint out of Belgium returns with its second vinyl drop, and this time takes you into some serene realms of breakbeat-driven pleasure court yes of Dave NA. His Altura EP opens with 'Escape', a wide open and airy mix of wispy synths and dusty, floating breaks. 'Elevation' has a more churning rhythm and dubby undercurrent and 'Pulse' (feat Freq444) has a hypnagogic feel, smeared vocal cries and more raw percussive patterns. 'Novox' (feat Freq444) shuts down with the most heavy and moody breakfast of the lot, a certain jungle swagger and plenty of heavy bass.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. Stunning.

Review: Madison Willing - a film composer who makes ambient/orchestral soundscapes - makes a standout debut on wax here alongside long time drum &bass innovator dBridge on his Exit label. It came about after dBridge reached out over a year ago having heard Madison's self released debut album. They agreed they were fans of each other and starting sending music, thoughts and texts to and fro until the music we have here eventually coalesced. It is a beautiful and beguiling mix widescreen cinematic soundscapes with dBridge's expressive rhythms and twitchy synths powering it along. It is a superb coming together of two great talents.

Some Kind Of Strange
A Space Age Function
September
Review: This being only the second Sequencias release of the year does confirm the NYC techno outpost has been somewhat quieter than usual, but their commitment to working with quality artists remains undimmed. Dcantu is of course Nation and Creme regular D'Marc Cantu, and the Ann Arbor native is no stranger to Sequencias having featured twice on the label before. Some Kind Of Strange is however Cantu's first full 12" for the label and granted the space, the artist has elected to lay down a pleasing range of sounds across the three tracks. The title track is Cantu weaving a spell of high octane cosmic techno from his vast array of machinery, whilst "A Space Age Function" dips into the same sort of star gazing rave Legowelt has been focussing on of late. A complete switch in mood is offered on final track "September", a sprawling beatless production that could easily be mistaken for Carpenter and Howarth in their pomp.

Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode & Sohrab are behind this one and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the 'Haleeteh?' version. 'Azadi' has the feel of a sixties spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun' shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Review: Japan's Mule Musiq returns this week with its second release from Venetian self-described avant garde conservative Simone De Kunovich, presenting the final chapter of his Mondo Nuovo series. 'Addio Mondo Nuovo' with its hypnotic polyrhythms starts off the EP, followed by the trippy downbeat experimentalism of 'Path To Eternity' (On The River Of Nameless God)'. On the B-side, 'Inferno Verde' gives you a taste of 303 acid followed by the tribal ritual rites of 'Primal Dream'.

This time he returns to his own BLKRTZ imprint with a new EP, two beautiful sound sculptures from his mind to yours. Review: Techno doesn't often come on 7" but do not let that put you off this superb new drop from Bump'n'Grind. It features dub techno legend Deadbeat in fine form across two devastating cuts. A-side 'Ark Welders Dub' is a menacing and prowling track with a picked bassline and smeared chords to add real depth and weight. It's one to foster a heads down mood on the dancefloor, while emotional release comes in the form of the flip side. 'This Bitter Dub' is a more sparse sounds with hissing hi-hats skating over the drums while bittersweet synths and an aching blues vocal ring out up top.

Review: This new Syncrophone sub label named For Those Who Know is dedicated to 'alternative sounds' and presents mysterious French dark ambient industrial act Dedale. Starting out with the morose and rolling dub textures of "Preface de 1977" and the the woozy heroin house of "(Le) mythe" on the A side. Review: Few producers do the dub techno sound better than Rod Modell and on this second Atmospherica instalment, he shows why he is so revered. "Exploring The North" is dense and subdued, the hisses and crackles ebbing and flowing fluidly over a powerful sub-bass. "Pinewood Lodge" is more atmospheric and floaty, its chords flitting about like fireflies over a camp fire on the first night of autumn. Rounding out the release is "Shot Point". Immersive, hypnotic and ghostly, it washes through the speakers like waves crashing on a deserted beach at midnight. This is electronic music that is designed to get lost in.

Review: The life and times of Delia Derbyshire continue to be a fascination for anyone with even a passing interest in electronic music. And rightly so, for she was at the vanguard of music technology working in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Silva Screen are committed to presenting her pioneering works with the due reverence and ceremony they deserve, and so it goes for the two pieces of incidental music she composed in the 1960s, pressed onto this beautifully packaged gatefold 7". Review: Glenn Astro welcomes Doc Sleep and Delta Rain Dance to his pleasingly unusual and hard-to-pigeonhole Hypno Discs imprint. The selection of tracks they've delivered are pleasingly hazy and immersive, fixing new age and Balearic-minded sounds to deep basslines, dubby textures and mutilated UK bass style rhythms. Check first enveloping opener 'Virta Chords', where reverb-laden kalimba and marimba style melodies and dirt-encrusted ambient textures wrap around a rubbery post-dubstep beat and weighty sub-bass, before admiring the mutant experimental d&b flex of 'Speed (Dub)' - a pleasingly skittish and mind-altering concoction. Things simmer down to an eyes-closed crawl on side B, where the deeply attractive and sample-heavy 'Transition Env' delivers a densely layered ambient soundscape of the sort Rod Modell knocks out in his sleep.

The EP was written and produced "deep in the metropolis known as Okern at UTE HQ" by The Dosadi Experiments and after an atmospheric and filmic opening with the ambiance of 'Breaching The Hidden World' you really take off on 'Arrival.' This time, however, they jump start their machines and distortion pedals, and land on the Jealous God imprint; the label is run by a rather startling trio, the combined talents of Karl O'Connor aka Regis, Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant, and James Ruskin. It sounds like Damien Dubrovnik have all the respect they need, then! All four sound sculptures seem tailor made for the label, where glacial drones hint at something otherworldly or religious, and faint pulses can be heard in the background of the mix. It's techno without techno, dance music without the dance, and we love it to bits. Quality.

On the A-side, the long-serving Norwegian producer offers up his interpretation of "Pohj", a killer cut from Finnish electro sorts Jesse. Sotofett's version is loose, dubby and loved-up, with the graf-loving DJ/producer re-casting the track into a meandering chunk of deep dancefloor hypnotism. While impressive and undoubtedly club-ready, we actually prefer the flipside ambient house bliss of Sotofett's latest hook-up with Freakout Cult artist LNS (AKA Laura Sparrow), "Soft Peak Mix". Built around sparkling, watery electronics and a relentless melody line that bobs and weaves throughout, it's a saucer-eyed chunk of horizontal brilliance.

Review: Soundtracks For No Film Vol. 1 is a rather charming mini album of outer-spatial, conceptual electronics from the always on point Acido Records label, seemingly tasking contributors to deliver arrangements worthy of soundtracking film. Madteo sets the tone with "Science Fiction" a haunting spectral cut with little regard for beat structures that could feasibly sit in alongside his brilliant LP for Sahko last year. Alongside this, the A Side features three short form productions, with 291out's "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)" the highlight, sounding very much like the music you might hear during the end credits of a forgotten 80s sci-fi drama. Review: Miss Nixon and Jacqueline Fuijkschot originally got together for some jam sessions in a sweaty attic circa 2015, and wound up with a track called 'Run' which ended up on a 7" for Das Ding's Tear Apart Tapes. Since then, Hivern Discs have picked up on the track and brought it out of limited-run obscurity to give it a full 12" pressing with some expertly selected cover versions. The original is a threadbare slice of melancholic minimal wave, but Cucina Povera thickens the sound into a brooding slice of ethereal dream pop. Celine Gillain's version is poised and raw, in keeping with her own excellent Mind Is Mud LP. Dania completes the picture with a straining, yearning ambient abstraction of the original.

So while 'Bamboo Haze' feels born in the sticky heat of South East Asia, creating sweaty, mystical moods, 'Should Be There' shares more in common with percussive outsiders like Harmonious Thelonious, with a drop of How To Dress Well's alt-R&B also in there. Mamazu's 'Blueprint' layers Arabesque sounds atop one hell of a hook-y rhythm and beat section, whereas 'Flow' is late night nu-jazz blues for smoky, candlelit after hours soirees. Review: Demdike Stare have hooked up once more with guitarist Jon Collin for what is their most psychedelic record yet. This trippy and vibrant dream is a record of concrete that's been performed on tape, pedals and a homemade fiddle known as the Swedish nyckelharpa. It manages to be both pastoral (no doubt a result of the fact that all artists hail from the Pennine moorlands) and of this world but also trippy and cosmic. It conveys a sleeping metropolis at night time but also a misty, rainy moor in the middle of winter. There are two halves to this album which both reward close listening with infinite sonic detail.

Review: Following on from its first incarnation as an 'exhibition-performance' at the Tate Modern in 2019, Pan Daijing's 'Tissues' finally gets a physical and digital release in music-only form. A strange, hour-long, operatic dirge in four movements, the album hears Daijing's main modus operandi - her voice - breathe and expand through several ambient and modern classical movements. While the original performance saw Daijing's opera weave through a libretto sung in both English and Chinese - and deployed stange, glitchy visual elements made up of ballet dancers stationed against the brutalist backdrop of the Tate's Tanks - the music itself is foreboding and strange, blending unprocessed monk's mantras and droning ragas. A radical play on the opera form, set in a new electronic context.

Review: Alex Ander and Marc Dall, the two dudes behind the Dalhous project, have pretty much restricted their output to the mighty Blackest Ever Black label, but who could blame them? The label has been one of the most consistent and diverse stables for dark and industrial dance and non-dance music over the last five years, a true pinnacle of the 2010's. This latest work, entitled The Composite Moods Collection Vol 1 / House Number 44 is a beast of an album, nineteen piece of sparse and desolate electronic music that has much more in common with a soundtrack than an ambient album. In fact, the chilling backdrops of drones and electro-acoustic wails that flutter over this work are truly a piece of moody melodica, a times loosely infused with melted beats and a ritualistic form of percussion. It's classic BEB material, and if you're into travelling to sinister, cavernous places, this will surely do the trick.

Review: Take it from us - you want to get to know Denovali Germany on an intimate level. The label has been putting out tearjerking contemporary classical and far-reaching electronic compositions since 2005, lays claim to its own festival of forward thinking music and generally doesn't put a foot wrong. Home to the likes of Electro Guzzi and Les Fragments De La Nuit, it's an imprint and then some, to put it mildly.

Dalhous' The Composite Moods Collection is another one for the ages - the kind of album that you're bound to come back to for years because each play through seems to reveal new layers and elements that may not have presented themselves immediately. While for the most part this is all ambient, there are elements here that take us into much more muscular and ferocious ends, from 'Everything Is Bleeding' to the cinematic tension of 'Open As A Glade Unfolding'.

Review: Ambient explorers Dalhous - AKA producers Marc Dalla and Alex Ander- have some intriguing influences; apparently this second full length for Blackest Ever Black was inspired by their fascination with the life and work of radical psychiatrist R.D Laing. Whether this is noticeable in the music is debatable, though there are plenty of varied moods, dreamy melodies, cascading electronics and glitchy rhythms to be found on Will To Be Well. Certainly, it's a thoroughly engaging and entertaining set, far lighter and more melodious in tone and texture than their 2013 debut. There are still droning passages of intense melancholy, of course, but these are countered by sun-bright melodies and beautiful, drawn-out sounds.

Review: Long-serving Swedish producer Joel Mull, previously best-known for his club-focused techno sets, first started work on Nautical Dawn, his first album under his occasional Damm alias, over a decade ago. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of 'nautical dawn' - that point when the sun is not yet above the horizon, but bathes the sky in vivid colours - he wanted to make music for the break of dawn that combined home-made field recordings with suitably drowsy, opaque electronic motifs, slow-burn ambient chords, tactile aural textures and, when the mood took him, horizontal and hypnotic beats. It may have taken him a while, but the resultant set is little less than inspired: an evocative set of enveloping compositions that tease and tingle the senses.

Review: Since first emerging from the sleepy backwaters of rural Sweden in 2013, ambient explorers D.A.R.F.D.H.S have been impressively prolific. This full-length for Field - a typically fragile, immersive set that joins the dots between droning creepiness, soft-focus beauty and icy electronica - is their seventh in total, following excursions on Opal Tapes, Clan Destine and Total Black. It's as intoxicating, enjoyable and heart wrenching as ever, with spine tingling melodies wrapping themselves around weightless synthesizer chords, dreamy rhythms and other-worldly textures. There are positive moments, of course, but for the most part it's beautifully poignant, as if the duo is mourning the loss of a dear friend.

Review: Finding its home among the shadiest and most cutting-edge of labels, Jonas Ronnberg and Michel Isorinne's DARFDHS project has always been a favourite of ours since their inception back in 2013. They return to the excellent Northern Electronics with an extended LP, eleven cuts of sporadic, noisy pseudo techno to wreck both your speakers and your jaws. From "Hatets Sanger" through to "De A Dar Vi Kom Ifran, A Dit Vi Ska, Sa De A Lika Bra A Borja Vanja Av Sa Me A Leva", we are immersed in a world of icy sonics that range from the violent and beat-driven, to the utterly placid and desolate. Review: Russian ex-pat techno maverick Dasha Rush has always been a unique talent. Even so, Sleepstep - her first full-length for the admirable Raster Noton imprint - is a high concept affair. Designed to induce a dream-like state, it offers a mix of droning ambience, slo-motion electronica, yearning ambience and hypnotic, far-out techno, all interspersed with brief readings of Rush's poems. By and large, it has the desired effect, and even the darker, more macabre moments - see the percussive hit of "Lumiere Avant Midi", for starters - have a calming, atmospheric quality. By and large, it's the beatless excursions that really stand out, with the operatic vocals and woozy strings of "Sail Away To Her" being particularly spellbinding.

Review: Sarah Davachi is nothing short of mesmerising whatever you find her through. On Antiphonals it's a case of deceptively simple instrumental work that has elements of acoustic folk, dreamy ambient, and drone-y electronica, all of which helps create an abstract but immersive world of tonal adventures, the overall aim being to explore the subtle nuances of gradual note development and harmonious refrains.

The deceptively simple part comes from the sheer number of different instruments involved here. All the research and music theory she has taken in over the years i often through some of the word's most respected institutions i has certainly paid off. Understanding how to combine harpsichords, Mellotrons, tape echoes, Korgs, pianos and more, this is a fine example of everything being in its rightful place.

"Fun, hopefully poignant, definitely weird." Not our words, reader, but the words of New York indie rock heroes Pinegrove when describing their short movie, Amperland, NY, which this collection of often pretty, always emotional and expertly written tracks were created for. Definitely the kind of tonic many of us could do with in spring 2021, then.

Surprisingly, considering the brief running time of the film, the soundtrack comprises 21 individual songs, and while some come in at less than one minute long others come close to breaking the five minute mark, making this a genuinely complete album brimming with ideas. From the weeping steel guitars on 'Hairpin', through the emo grunge and pianos of 'Overthrown', fans of Ben Folds, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Gramercy Arms will no doubt be in their element.

Review: Known for her minimalistic electroacoustic music, pianist, organist, and composer Sarah Davachi always stands out on the ambient-drone shelves. While many working in these fields are concerned with function as a primary focal point and route to form, Davachi's output is packed with immediate musicality, perhaps due to her penchant for using more traditional orchestral acoustic instrumentals and then giving them the modern treatment.

Hence her rising to become one of the most (rightly) fawned-over and respected practitioners in the scene. Two Sisters is a case in point in terms of her overall approach, a collection of tracks that sound utterly timeless, atmospheres created in a way they have been for aeons and yet what's here would have been impossible to realise even just a few decades ago.

Review: Prolific Canadian composer Sarah Davachi shows no signs of slowing down. 2019 is barely six months old and she's already offering up her second set of the year, her seventh in total since the start of 2017. This time round, the Los Angeles-based experimentalist has returned to her roots, delivering a set of two distinctive halves. The A-side "Perfumes" suite is startlingly simple in concept, with Davachi creating a dreamlike mood via sustained, slowly shifting church organ chords and gentle piano motifs. It's little short of stunning. Turn to side B and you'll be treated to an exercise in avant-garde modern classical, where slowly vibrating strings and minimalist movements slowly evolve over 21 spell binding minutes.

Review: Sarah Davachi's latest record, The Head As Form'd In The Crier's Choir, is a septet of compositions, written between 2022 and 2024, that form a conceptual suite and album-length observation of the mental dances that we construct to understand acts of passage. Transient in both name and sound, this stunning, droning set of compositions will work as timely quellers for those currently in a migratory state of mind, literally and/or figuratively. Often basking in the impure associations evoked by pure harmony and tonality, all the pieces are slow-moving, suggesting a lowered existential frame rate. Drawing inspiration from the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice - in which Orpheus ventures into Hades while living, dodging the usual psychopompic rites applied to those who have actually died, in a wager with the gods to resurrect Eurydice, his love - Davachi's record is a worthy intertext, bringing stygian drones of egress - woodwinds and electronic stretchings most notably - to the theme.

Review: The Head As Form'd In The Crier's Choir is Sarah Davachi's latest album, and her sixth or seventh for her very own Late Music. Inspired by the tragic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, this new record is a vanishingly passionate septet of songs, a suite of mystifying reverence bound in the otherwise kept-simple arrangements of organs, strings, trombones, woodwinds, voices and electronics. A doomy liturgical feeling is instantly evoked here, with peacefully pure yet mournful drones sense-dashingly likened to the pealing of a bell, as though the sonorous resonances thus emitted had been stretched out in a worthy but failed attempt to stop time. A lengthy theoretical tract accompanies the release, minutely detailing the various specialist pipe organs used on the record, as well as their formal relevance to the record's theme as impurely meantoned instruments, as well as their historic, occult provenance.

Review: Like many experimental composers, Sarah Davachi is impressively prolific. This Ba Da Bing! debut marks the Los Angeles-based Canadian's third full-length outing of 2018, though there's little sign of her high quality threshold dipping. This is studious, hallucinatory ambience of the highest order, with Davachi conjuring up cuts that ebb, flow and studiously unfurl themselves across the sound space, making "Gave In Rest" perfect for contemplative headphone listening. At times, tracks are little more than beguiling exercises in electronic sound design, at others they're far more musically complex, drawing on her love of choral music, woodwind ensembles and dusty old church organs. Throughout, the music sounds breathtakingly beautiful.

Review: 'Liberamente' is now available for the first time on cassette. Dawn Chorus and the Infallible Sea create soft-textured and slowly unfolding sonic landscapes, somewhere between guitar-oriented drone music and modern classical. Liberamente is the kind of album that demands attention and patience from the listener, yet it's ultimately a very rewarding one. Stylistically Dawn Chorus and the Infallible Sea sums up several decades of American soundscape and drone music, taking threads from Windy & Carl, Auburn Lull, and Stars of the Lid then weaves them into a contemporary, and sonically adventurous whole. On the surface it suggests simplicity, but dig deeper and the seven pieces on Liberamente reveals a rare compositional dexterity. This is minimalism at its finest.

Review: A collaborative project involving Marc Ertel, zake and Damien Duke, Dawn Chorus & The Infallible Sea's music certainly matches the intriguing name the team decided to come up with. Tunes are deep, immersive and easily capable of conjuring some pretty wild dreams of fantastical places and mythical things.

Sheets of shimmering synths seem to glint like the sun is hitting them as they weave through tracks like 'Dormi Bene, Spirito', 'Silenzio Potente' and 'Caduta Del Cielo'. 'Lontana' drowns us in submerged note refrains, ebbing and flowing like the tides, a hidden symphony that washes over and through the listener. It's meditative stuff but nothing here lacks direction - you just need to pay close attention to hear the movement in the arrangements, making for a different kind of aural journey, the destination what you make of it.
