Review: The DDS label, short for Distort Decay Sustain, has given artists like Demdike Stare a platform on which to express themselves through over the years, but it was really Equiknoxx's LP from 2016, Bird Sound Power, which opened their doors to a whole new category of listener. In fact, it was that LP, with all its stunning, dub-wise experimentation, which has led to Mark Ernestus being called up for a pair of remixes. As you probably know, this is a rare case, so this 12" is sort of a special piece - "Congo Get Slap" is given the pure Ernestus rundown, with a charging, minimalistic percussion being swallowed whole by the raucous dub stabs caving in from all angles; the remix of "Flagged Up" is a much slower, more brooding affair in the same vein as the mythical cuts residing on imprints like Basic Channel and Chain Reaction - nothing but deep, meditative dub flexing for the mind. BIG!

Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Review: Johnny Malek is a Detroit-based fashion designer-turned-producer who makes a strident arrival on Yoruba with this EP of gospel-infused deep house. It's a potent approach which chimes perfectly with Osunlade's esteemed label, reportedly prefacing a larger project to come. There is an abundance of Afro house drums on 'I Promise', an anthem in the making with a vocal which will lodge itself in the hearts and minds of any assembled throng it's faced with. 'Venus Rising' maintains the vibe, confirming Malek's arrival as an artist to keep tabs on in the new wave of deep house artists.

Review: Music producers do tend to be rare breeds, so it's not a surprise to hear of a label series exploring the theme. 'Uncommon Species II' is the second installment of the series from the Swiss label Phantom Island, bringing together various artists for five curios centring on oddball future disco, nu-disco, and re-edits. Highlights include the dream-pop-Balearic Kejeblos Remix of Moreeats' 'Forever Fun' - in which a rogue male vocal seductively implores us to light his fire - and CCO's 'Cyanea' - a standout acid disco number. Frankly, though, all the tracks here are unusual bangers, packed with extra additions that only a rare breed of artist could add.

Review: Golden-era hip-hop legend DJ Marley Marl continues his adventures in house music, and this time he's got soulful house royalty - specifically Kenny Bobien and Lady Alma- in tow. 'Joy (Hallelujah)' is as righteous, uplifting and life-affirming as you'd expect: a horn, organ and piano-heavy slab of hands-in-the-air brilliance topped off with some sublime gospel lyrics and vocals from Bobien and Alma. We'd argue the track is best in its full vocal 'Extended Mix' form, though the accompanying instrumental is still superb - and arguably more suitable for those who are uncomfortable with the (admittedly joyous) religious messaging within the lyrics. Testify!

Review: During the 1990s, there were few techno producers in Spain who were quite as prolific - or successful, for that matter - as Alex Martin. This superb double-pack delivers proof of the Barcelona-based artist's impressive early form by gathering together some of the best cuts he released between '94 and '98 under a variety of aliases, most notably Sideral and The Fat DB. Interestingly, there's plenty of variety to be found within the collected cuts, with sparkling sci-fi ambient ('Elipse') and deep, shuffling IDM (the acid-flecked brilliance of 'Mare Nostrum' and 'Butterly') nestling side by side with deep techno ('I Wanna Look at the Stars'), ragged futurist acid ('Incognita'), intergalactic techno ('Planetarium') and even cuts inspired by the soul, bass-weight and shuffle of the then emerging UK garage sound ('Can Make It').

Review: For a long time Gary Martin was referred to as an "unsung hero" of Detroit techno, but with the DET 313 label, run with Yossi Amoyal, he's finally cemented a fearsome reputation as one of the Motor City's finest. With such reputations come the exchange of the proverbial "silly money" for the more hard to find recordings, thus the existence of this double 12" which collects eight of Martin's efforts from the mid to late 90s into one package available for a slightly more sensible exchange of currency. Among the highlights are the Latin-enhanced beats of 'Manhattan', two mixes of the sublime 'In Rythem' complete with a gospel preacher in full flow and a seven minute extended remaster of 'I'll Be Back I Promise' from Yossi Amoyal. It's no surprise to see Martin's work picked up and played by the likes of Ben Klock, given his unique take on rhythm, but there's plenty of soulfulness going on here as well.

Review: Originally released digitally at the tail end of 2021 and finally out on vinyl, Masters At Work's brilliant 'It's What We Live, It's What We Are' is a shameless throwback to their classic works of the 1990s. The A-side version summarises everything that's best about the veteran NYC duo, with raw, warehouse-ready synth stabs, twinkling piano motifs and vocal snippets from an early '80s Peech Boys workout (originally championed by the late, great Larry Levan) over a booming bassline and bouncy beats from the drum machine of the masterful Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez. On the flip, they tip a hat to their influential Nuyorican Soul project by peppering a Latin-tinged broken house groove with woozy synth sounds, extra-hot percussion and Latin piano flourishes.

Review: Following a series of tweaked reissues featuring previously forgotten (and unreleased) remixes of back catalogue gems, Masters at Work offer up something even more special: a double-pack containing four tracks rediscovered in their archives last year. They begin with the bubbly, mid-tempo NYC house shuffle of 'MAW Apes Groove' - all warming organ chords, bubbly analogue bass and oddball vocal samples - before serving up the hip-swinging, sub-heavy, sax-laden bump of KenLou's 'Lost I'M Ready (Sax Dub)'. Over on the second slab of wax, 'Virus Ruff Mutes' is a locked-in slab of house hedonism marked out by a tight, looped organ stab, while 'KenLou' thump recalls the inspired, jazz-dance-friendly, Latin-tinged brilliance of 'The Nervous Track', one of their most admired cuts.

Review: MCL tracks back to the late 80s and the time when EBM, techno and house were colliding in Frankfurt. The project was spearheaded by Alexander Henninger and Ken Taylor, who had a barrel of laughs cutting up dark and punchy box jams with some cheeky Big Apple samples for the kind of unexpected dancefloor drop which will always incite a reaction from the crowd. There are a variety of mixes to choose from depending on which specific energy you want to bring, plus there's the bonus 'Short Wave Symphony' as the consummate B2 track which offers some pure synth divisions after all that seat-inducing action on the rest of the platter.

Review: Here comes a fresh 12" containing four remixes of the song 'Call A Wave' by Malcolm McLaren and The Bootzilla Orchestra. The original was released in 1989 as part of McLaren's album Waltz Darling, which was an early example of the 'collaborative studio album' popular at the time, and fused classical music with elements of then-contemporary dance music styles, such as his brand of downtempo-ish post-punk / industrial - a true McLaren mode. The newer remixes that feature here come from the likes of DFC and Mark Moore and William Orbit (responsible for the Orbital mix rather than the Hartnoll brothers) and are no less sludgey, Balearic and chuggy as the original loom-bird-laden track. Two new stripped-back versions also appear.

Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Review: A decade has now passed since the birth of Harry 'Munir' Septiandry's Midnight Runners project, a studio outfit turned live band whose sound mines South-East Asian funk, soul and disco for inspiration. The Indonesian outfit's latest release, 'Nusantra Tropic Disco Volume 1', is arguably one of its' strongest yet. Rich in vintage 1970s synth sounds, tropical colour and live grooves that variously draw on disco, jazz-funk and library music, it feels fresh and exciting despite its nostalgic inspirations and authentic period instrumentation. Highlights include, but are no way limited to, vibrant and percussive disco opener 'Kaliuga', the spacey and warming 'Ratna and Galih' and soaring, future peak-time Indonesian disco anthem 'Kasih Bersemi'.

Review: Outlier experimental label Eating Music brings back more for us to chew on here in the form of a varied four tracker from various artists. It is Mindexxx that opens with 'Track 1' which layers up snaking synths and deeply buried dark bass that grows in intensity and washes over you like a Tsunami. Laughing Ears then cuts back to a tender mood with soft piano chords and slowly unfolding rhythms that are warm and lithe. Gooooose's 'The Dusk Of Digital Age' is a churchy affair with textured drones shot through with beams of synth light and Knopha's 'Off-Peak Season Tourists' layers up choral vocals and jumbled drum sounds into something hypnotic and escapist.

Review: Woody McBride and Dave Stevens worked together as Modal back in the mid-90s. Hardcore diggers have been banging their beats for a while but they're not that easy to find so thankfully the Sounds label reissues this collection go thumpers from 1997. It is a hefty double back of raw but soulful beats with rough edges, sharp hits and brilliantly unpolished drums. 'Quadruple Take' is a real sweatathon, 'Carnivalesque' brings the fun with rolling boogie-woogie pianos and further highlights included the silky and spaced out tech of 'Beautiful Music'.

Review: Goodbye Esmond, Hello Kelvin is a stylish and wide-angle look at electro that explores every different mood and groove possible. The opener is a mournful scene-setter with downbeat chords but hopeful wisps of melody. 'Micro Machines' takes flight on slick, wet claps and driving kicks and 'Beam' is a brain-cleansing bit of cosmic electro pureness. There is a coy electro-funk to 'Magic Man' that allows you to dream while your feet get stuck in and 'Citrus' is a gorgeous late-night cruise on far-sighted chords that brim with emotion. The second 12" is just as classy and packed with evocative feelings.

Review: San Francisco psychedelic soul ensemble Monophonics were once described by Stax Records co-owner Al Bell as "one of the best soul bands I have ever seen", which is high praise indeed. Mirrors, which comes pressed onto clear green vinyl, is the combo's fifth full-length and first album for three years. It's a surprisingly breezy and eclectic affair, with the band variously turning their hands to bluesy, Rare Earth style funk-rock ("Lying"), Hammond-heavy peak-time business (a tasty cover of Frankie Valli's "Beggin"), spiraling instrumental wig-outs (fabulous closer "California Dreaming"), heart-aching torch songs ("My Heart Cries") and laidback, acid-fried Balearic soul (opener "Summer Breeze"). In other words, it's a fine album that sparkles from start to finish.

Review: Japanese heavyweights HHV continue their ongoing trawl through the back catalogue of long-serving hip-hop producer, DJ, record collector and self-styled King of Diggin', Muro. Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. While jazzy, the bombastic backing track - which can be heard in full on the flipside instrumental version - is forthright and club-ready, making the single a must-have for working hip-hop DJs and those who love the more up-tempo end of the rap spectrum.

Review: Zach Murray is a fast-rising London producer who makes a great impression here with an ambitious and ultimately accomplished double pack on Oscuro. The title track 'Pieces Of The Puzzle' opens with sweeping ambient before 'Chill Pill' explores as glistening melodic world of futuristic tech and 'Can't Stop The Rain' has an old-school energy to its marching drums and rave stabs. Review: This double 12" compilation between Brazilian duo Stekke and producer and DJ Max Underson is a perfect marriage between the emotional aesthetic background of Underson's previous works and the precise floor-filling formula that Stekke has devised. The minimal composition is at the crossroads between deep, acid and tech house, with the wet basslines of 'The Messenger' being paired with ritualistic sub-bass lines culminating in house heaven. A real highlight on this release is side 4's 'Guidance', a smooth, grooving track that goes to show that house tracks don't always have to be cramped to the brim. The negative space used in these tracks, and the way it's used, is an art. Not to turn a blind eye to the two unique remixes on the compilation either, which take tracks to new heights thanks to the abstract re-imaginings by XDB and Melchior Productions Ltd. Universal Law is a schooling in the ways of minimal house, take notes.

Review: Cititrax's first Tracks 12" sampler did a good job in showcasing material from some of the Brooklyn-based label's favourite contemporary producers. This follow-up, arriving only a few short months after the first, aims to do the same. Returning for his second appearance, Tsuzing kicks things off with the razor-sharp shuffle of "Nonlinear War", whose intoxicating electronics and wild synth lines recall Brown Album-era Orbital, before London-based L/F/D/M takes a trip into bleak techno territory with the acid-laden "Mouth Holes". Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: By now, it should be more than well-known that Joe-Armon Jones and Maxwell Owin are two of UK's jazz's most prominent and deserving fixtures, with the former having made a name for himself as part of outfits like Ezra Collective, and the latter for his unique blend of jazz and future garage. Review: British crime television series Sherlock has proved hugely popular in recent years. The latest adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings have also been hugely enhanced by the soundtrack. That score has been composed by David Arnold and Michael Price, and has won the pair numerous awards including a 2014 EMMY as well as two further nominations for an EMMY and a BAFTA nomination. Their contribution to Sherlock is immeasurable as exemplified by this soundtrack which is thrilling and sinister, playful and suspenseful in equal measure.
