Review: Lerosa has a flexibility in his sound which can reach from immersive techno pastures (as on his album for Acid Test) via exquisite deep house on to true-school electro and Italo. It's the latter formation which takes the lead on this new 12" for Welt Discos, with 'Karnak' revelling in a cascade of heart-wrenching synths with a snappy funk to the drums. 'Pledge' strikes a unique sweet spot where minimal wave and dubwise steppers meet, offering a hitherto unexplored dimension to the Italian man in Dublin town. '893' brings a more classic electro-techno flavour for the uptempo crew, and then 'Universal Balance' smooths things out with blown out piano chords atop a relaxed machine funk beat.

Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Review: Batov Records have proven themselves juggernauts in their ability to stick to a theme; since 2016, they've kept up their Middle-Eastern grooves themed 45's series for a spate of over 13 releases. Les Dynamites and Radio Trip serve up their latest. Hailing from Jerusalem and Israel respectively, both bring influences from dubbed-out Mediterranean bass, Yemeni folk and trip-hop to each tracks, different in style but reconciled by these influences. What's more 'Oud Two' and 'No Oud' are intended as invitations to dance, with both bands intending their respective tracks as rallying calls for Israeli belly dancers and breakdancers.

Review: We are big fans of New York label Big Crown here at HQ. It seems they rarely put out a dud and this one is no exception. Norwegian outfit Les Imprimes have kicked off a new collaboration with the crew here with new soul single 'I'll Never Leave' drenching you in musical warmth ahead of a full-length album to come. Romance is the lyrical subject and the vocals flow as freely as the arrangements. Producer and multi-instrumentalist Morten Martens is behind the band - well, it's just him right now - and this is a finer taste of the LP to come.

Review: Norwegian outfit Les Imprimes have already found their feet with their earliest outings on Big Crown. As they continue to build towards their new album Reverie they drop another single from it here in the form of 'Falling Away' backed with 'Still Here'. Both cuts are beautiful and display fine musicianship, the sort of soul that melts your heart and breezy grooves that bring calm to your mind and body. Review: Less J is a low-key producer who first popped up in 2019 with a single on Sound Society called Old Family Tapes. That title informs the overall sound world they explore within the framework of deep house, taking some cues from Moodymann's dusty, meandering approach to sampling and arrangement to create some genuinely soulful, head-tripping gear. This new EP on their own Law Heart label gets way out to the fringes of deep house on the haunted hoedown '3 Hermanos', while the marginally more strident 'Los Cuadraos' rides a sublime, blunted chord loop into heads-down infinity. 'Maravillosa Corbera' has a shuffling, finger-clicking groove to die for, and then Claudia Urbano lends her piano and vocal touch to 'I'll Be Cooking You', calling to mind the likes of 'Long Hot Sexy Nights' and sounding absolutely on point.

Review: SNTS and Sacred Court are staunch fixtures of the German hard techno circuit, and this reputation is more than topped up on this latest addition to the repertoire, 'Everything In Distance'. Taking on a vampiric theme, titles like 'I Absorb You', 'Biting My Skin' and 'Double Heart' land like clawed blows to the neck, confounding with their unrelenting kick thrums and surrounding industrial atmospheres, gothic and miasmic as they come. More texture than usual is heard on this record than most pummelling-techno artisans abide, with the four-by-four kick drive almost sounding to have completely gotten lost in the fog by the time we reach track three. Listen if you dare.

Review: Richard Roberts and Andrew Harber kicked off Letherette back in 2008, soon signing to Ninja Tune and Ho Tep before settling into a steady groove with their own label Wulf. That's where they return to for this short and sweet 7", digging into their track 'Woop Baby' for an extended mix trip on the A-side. It's a choppy, funkified joint with low-slung bass and diced up soul vocals which will get any downtempo situation locked in hard. Switching things up on the flip, 'Mash' leans towards a Motown strut with resplendent horn hooks and more soul than the bottom of your shoe. Just check those vibraslap hits.

Review: It was back in 1986 when obscure UK electrofunk band Leval released their sole 7" - a sparkling slab of pop-boogie brilliance that has long been a secret weapon for dusty-fingered diggers and Brit-funk collectors. As this Athens of the North reissue proves, the record remains a brilliant Brit-boogie gem. Check first 'Our Love', a confirmed earworm that sees the band wrap duetting male/female vocals around a deliciously bustling blend of rubbery slap-bass, eyes-closed soft rock guitars, warm synthesizer chords and a dewy-eyed, jazz-funk style breakdown. Flipside 'It's Up To You' is a little more eccentric thanks to an unusual time signature and drum track, but boasts the same addictive blend of male and female lead vocals, slap bass and synths.

This release resurrects the original mixes alongside some iconic remixes from the 90s, encapsulating a significant chapter in the jungle movement. A landmark release, not only signifiying a pivotal era in jungle but also marking the inaugural release on Philly Blunt, kicking things off as they were meant to go on. Review: Spanish label Blanco Y Negro has got some irresistibly uplifting trance on its hands here from Italian Levy 9 in collaboration with Patty Dart. We can't quite work out whether this is a new tune from a mid-90s outfit or a reissue of their work from back then, but either way it is going to get your hands in the air and tears in your eyes such is the emotional overload of the synths in both tunes. The tunes come as remixes by Street 9 remix, a D-Floorfiller mix and an extended mix with big chords and catchy Euro-dance vocals.

Review: A classic 7" by reggae and dancehall legend Barrington Levy returns to the equally legendary Jan Life label. Levy rose to fame in the early 1980s, but it wasn't until much later that Jah Life (founded by Hyman Wright and Percy Chin) clocked onto his talents and funnelled him into their roster. 'Black Roses' is backed up by the infamous 'Rose Dub', and both tracks romantically ruminate no the presence of a symbolically shadowy rose - "something special... got to water it!" - growing in Levy's garden.

Review: Barrington Levy's 1984 7" single 'Murderer' is easily one of the most popular and identifiable tracks in the dancehall genre, laying fresh groundwork for a sound still widely enjoyed today. Produced by Hyman Wright and Percy Chin, originally for Jah Life (and reissued for the same label), the song's infectiously gruff intonation represents the epidemic of violence and crime in Jamaica, and Levy's plea for peace and justice. Review: Lew Lewis is an artist who first rose up through the ranks back in the 1990s. He has his own labels Poodle Recordings and Nu Poodle Breaks back when UK tech house was right at the vanguard and never sounding better. He debuted himself in 1999 on Swag and now a couple of gems from that time have been found in his archives that never got released back then. They sound right on point with their elastic baselines and metallic drum textures all combing for a punchy, bumpy sound that will get you in a sweat in no time.

Review: Joe Lewandowski may still be relatively young, but some of his musical inspirations are undoubtedly vintage - as this return to Skylax Records for the first time since 2020 proves. 'Here I Am' sees the Paris-based New Yorker team up with vocalist STOLT for a trip into moody, turn-of-the-80s new wave territory. As you'd expect from someone with Lewandowski's track record, it's a beautifully authentic and stylish production that adds Johnny Marr style guitars and STOLT's impassioned vocals to Visage-esque electronics and fuss-free drum machine beats. Review: The Soul 4 Real label do a damn fine job of digging out the deepest cuts from soul legends you know and those you don't. Jimmy Lewis may not be a household name but he wrote for the likes of Ray Charles, and with his 1974 album Totally Involved he revealed himself to be something of a pinnacle of real soul music. From a similar era when he was recording for Hotlanta, the two tracks on this 12" were previously only available on a CD compilation but they absolutely deserve to be ringing out on this beautifully crafted 7".

Review: This is the first time these two mega obscure and super rare Northern Soul nuggets have been re-released. They were initially recorded at Edgewood Studio in Washington DC in 1969 by Keni St. Lewis who was a prolific songwriter who recorded only a couple of his own tunes. He as a part of various other groups like The Cairos and The Chancellors and this was his first real hit as a solo artist after he wrote others for the likes of Billy Butler, Gene Chandler and The O'Jays.

Review: Bengoa's Athens-based-label B2 Recordings has impressed over its first nine releases. The 10th is another fine one to mark the mini-milestone and it comes from Lex, who was last on the label a couple of years ago. His star has only continued to rise since then with fresh beats on the likes of Samosa and Leng and now his brilliant disco house fusions find more new heights with 'Fast Jags.' This is a cosmic workout that slowly builds on nice loose drums with astral pads circling around you and keys withering in sci-fi fashion. Bengoa offers up a raw edit that brings some deeper jazz keys and tumbling bongos and Felipe Gordon's Deep Funk remix ups the house vibes with a nice thumping groove.

Review: While he's been a stalwart of the Athens underground for decades, it's only in recent years that Lex has begun to release music on a regular basis. Here he returns to Delusions of Grandeur following his collaborative EP with Locke, 7 Day Path, in 2022. Fittingly, Locke makes an appearance - alongside Guto Fernandez - on 'Purity', a fine vocal number that sits somewhere between nu-disco and percussive Latin house, while Lex's love of collaboration continues on the late-80s piano house vibe of 'No Time For Formalities'. Review: Chris Liebing is certainly one of the elder statements of the global techno scene but he still has plenty of creativity in him. A lover of darker emo sounds like Depeche Mode, and not afraid to experiment with spoken word when in album mode, he gets rather more direct on this new one on his own enduring CLR label. 'Love Those Who Fight' is a call to arms, a powerful dancefloor stomper with 90s techno overlaid with urgent synths and empowering mantras. 'With Passion & Faith' ups the ante and is a strobe-lit heart of the dance floor affair with well-crafted layers.

Review: Those of a certain age might well remember this early trance and breakbeat anthem from Life Form. It landed in 1993 and now on the occasion of its 30th birthday, it has been fully remastered for this reissue on Sound Metaphors. Right now this sort of sound is full back en vogue with all sorts of young producers aping those early glory days but few will match the quality of 'Come Down' with its slick breakbeat loops and alluring female vocals. There are two mixes, a Juan Ramos remix that is more downtempo and the captivating 'Summer's Child' is also included.

Review: Life Recorder knows how to get plenty of meaning and character out of the machines he uses to make his classically included house music. He proves that once more with a fresh outing on Vision Recordings that opens with 'Machines In My Head'. It's an unhurried cut with bendy synth lines bringing elastic movement to the rolling drums. 'The Spirit Alive' then rocks back and forth on hefty kicks full of reverb and 'Galaxy' gets more freaky and twitchy with pixelated leads and swathes of crystalline synth washing over the drums. 'The Space Channel' rounds out this most heady and atmospheric of EPs with another balmy mix of cosmic synths and classic four-four drum programming.

Review: Take a trip back into the underground of early 80s Chicago and the raw, brilliant sound of the Magic Touch label. Numero have taken on the task of picking up some of the label's most sought-after jams and giving them a fresh pressing, and this sure shot from the Light Touch Band is a fine place to start. This is a record which offers two very different vibes depending on what you're after, as the A side slips into a feel-good, funked up rap joint celebrating all things Windy City and the B side takes a surprise turn into wild-eyed P-funk territory. The diggers and sharks have been circling this one for a long time - let it reach the people so they can all get down to the unreal sounds.

Review: The Light Touches label and production crew brings their magic fingers to another series of hot and lesser known tunes and forgotten classics here, all with something of an Afro tinge. 'Vera' kicks off with a playful and funky disco sound that is riddled with Afro vocals and melodies that make you want to move. There is more energy to the bristling drums and flailing hits of 'Savage' which has plenty of effects and loops bring the energy then the final cut is 'We De Youth'. It's a loose-limbed and percussive workout with big horns leading the way. Glorious stuff.

Review: While Last Poets are rightly regarded as the 'godfathers of rap', others would insist that Hustlers Convention - a 1973 solo album from member Jalal Nuriddin under the Lightnin' Rod alias - had more influence on the birth of hip-hop. In part, that's down to the funk backing he received on the album from his chosen backing bands, which included the mighty Kool & The Gang. Here, Dynamite Cuts prove the point by offering two killer cuts from the set on 7" for the very first time. A-side 'Sport' is a Blaxploitation style delight - all ear-catching horn motifs, shuffling funk breaks, weighty bass, wah-wah guitar and languid spoken word vocals - while 'Four Bitches Is What I Got' sees our hero make merry over a more stripped-back take on the same backing track.

Review: A recreational offshoot of the band Pleasure, Portland's Lights Out were led by their trumpeter Tonmy Collins as a way of staying musically exercised, pushing the envelope and getting a few local bookings on the side when Pleasure weren't on the road. Their sound started out as jazz fusion but they soon developed into a monstrously funky synth/-led funk rollercoaster. as vocalist Andy Stokes and guitarist Greg "Gee Mack" Dalton fronted the band.
The four tracks here were recorded as a demo for Solar Records in 1982 at Wave Sound Studios - a facility more used to housing punk acts such as The Wipers and The Rats - but the label 'fumbled' it and the band fellow apart soon after. Review: Chicago house great Lil Louis really nailed it when he wrote 'Cub Lonely' back in 1992 with his group The World. It was taken from their album A Journey With The Lonely and has lead vocals by Joi Cardwell that helped it become an instant club smash. All these years later it always gets a big reaction on the floor which is why it has now been reissued by Epic complete with a series of remixes. The I'm On The Guest List mix is the one with the wonky sax lines and steamy vocals, the instrumental is paired back and more club-ready then DJ Pierre's Afro club mix bringing some big and freewheeling synth energy. The Bellbottoms & Platforms mix is a subtle tweak and then the most raw of the lot is the Radically Lonely mix to close down.

Review: LIMC's Ramp EP is a perplexing thing. Released by Germany's Inch By Inch this year, it sounds like it was born in simpler times, while also being a complex piece of work by anyone's standards. Downbeat? Review: Definitely one for the collectors, Lime was Canadian duo (then husband and wife) Denis and Denyse LePage, and 'Angel Eyes' was originally the second single from their third studio album, 1983's Lime III. Almost 40 years later, the track has returned as a short form release, offering the original synth pop anthem, and a clubbier dub mix.
For many, though, not least Unidisc Canada, the label carrying this re-release, the major selling point is a remix - and something of a remodelling - courtesy of Turbo Recordings boss and dance music icon Tiga. Forsaking the rather smiley and bouncy original work, in favour of something grittier and altogether more dystopian, it's a masterclass of rough, gnarly broken electro, reworking and chopping vocals into disorientating loops, before finally introducing a kind of warehouse synth pop sound.

Review: Scandi disco don Rune Lindbaek can do it all from dazzling originals to smart edits, and it is the latter which he tackles here on the first release on his own new RLE label, which presumably stands from Rune Lindbaek Edits. The cut and paste master kicks off with the plodding cosmic funk of 'Freddie's Room' before getting more steamy and tropical on 'Danza Del Piano'. 'Seiko 1978' deals in lush 80s synth sounds and raining arps over chilly drums with talk box vocals adding more retro charm. 'Luca Y Camilo' is a steamy, super slow and rather sentimental closer.

Review: Christian Linder Essential Elements is a new label from Christian Linder that will serve up the essential elements needed for late-night dancing, so you can't fault its name. The first EP sets out its stall in fine style with two versions of the same cut. 'Circular Motion' (Emotional) is a mix of amped-up and slick drum loops that are detailed with some alien sound effects and a rising sense of synth warmth that brings a subtle sense of euphoria. 'Circular Motion' (Vivid) is a gentle tweak that has more bright pads and a more driving but still dubby and smooth groove. Two different sides to the same coin that will work in many different settings.

Review: Federal and Dubstore Japan reissue highly sought after gem, Willie Lindo's cover of Love Unlimited Orchestra's 'Midnight And You'. 'Midnight' is a louche, smooth-as-sin nocturne punctuated by hammond wobbles, whispered nothings and surely one of the most in-the-pocket basslines in reggae history and the legendary Lloyd Charmers gives it a sparse, small hours dubbing on the B-side, removing all fat and showcasing the unparalleled rhythm section. Absolutely essential stuff.

Review: Last summer, veteran singer/songwriter Mike Lindup dropped 'Time To Let Go', a delicious fusion of synth-pop, Afro-pop and dreamy soul that was set to feature on his long-promised follow-up to 1990 album Changes. Now Masters at Work man Louie Vega has got his hands on it and delivered a suite of fresh, club-ready reworks. Vega's EP-opening 'Expressions NYC Mix' does a great job in wrapping Lindup's original vocals, fluid pianos, chords and squelchy synth-bass around a snappy house groove, subtly re-framing it for peak-time floors. The 'Two Soul Afro House Fusion' mix is arguably even better, with Vega adding layers of delicious instrumentation to a Tony Allen-inspired Afro-house beat. Throw in a couple of instrumentals and a handy 'Beats' version and you have an excellent package.

Review: Frank Staniek has previous form in the minimal tech house scene as Frank Sonic, recording for the likes of Trapez and My Best Friend. Now he's helping shape out the sound of new San Jose label Wild Palms Trax by laying down the second release under a new alias, Link Gaetz. This is minimal delivered with a crisp focus, from the deliciously pointed 'El Camino' to the deep-diving 'Floripa'. The rhythm section is precision tooled and the atmospherics walk the line between escapism and restraint with ease. 'Cactaceae' is a freakier offering on the flip, but it's still looped up for a direct hit, while 'Into The Redwoods' plays around with vocal hooks and synth riffs for something more like an end-of-set knees up, minimal style.

Review: Colombian artist Lior has the blessing of the Stay Up Forever crew who are supporting the development of his 76B label, but if you were expecting straight-up free-party acid techno on this record think again. Lior and Tab K team up for the resoundingly cheeky 'Dancehall Vibes', which plays around with brass stabs strapped to uptempo techno with a result which is surprisingly chirpy. Chris Liberator and Sam Dfl have a more typically rave-ready approach on 'Psychedelic Drig', while Zyco makes the right moves for an industrial-strength slammer before Acid Chochi rounds the EP off with a synapse-frying slice of peak time wormhole business.

Review: The artwork for this new 12" from the System 108 label is eccentric enough to make you want to check out the music even if you don't know the artists. It's the sort of cover that suggests the music will be left of centre and quirky and that it is. 'Sao Januario' is a deep and lazy groove with sunny chords and jazzy keys that take you to the global south. 'Sunny Villa On A Distant Planet' is a twisted disco cut with house leaning drums and big cowbells under intergalactic synth lines. 'Rolando Nascer Do Sol' then rides a crisp electro breakout to keep you on your toes and 'OWL WCS' slows down for a cuddly back-to-mine style closer.

Review: Set the time machine back to the 90s with this new 12" from System 108 out of Holland. It's a collaboration between Lipless and TMP that kicks off with the jacked up old school drums and sirens of 'Diet 505' before 'QMD' sinks down into a deep and moody tech roller with a serene and futuristic feel. 'El Ritmo' is a wild one with manic synth sequences sounding like a computer in meltdown over crispy, prickly tech house drums and finally, 'The Right Moment' layers up warped pads and mad whites into another vibrant and full flavour cut for the peak time. Lovely artwork on this one too.

Review: Here we have the remastered edition of Robert Lippok's Open Close Open. Originally released in 2001 on the well-respected German glitch ambient label Raster Noton, the release has built a strong buzz about it. Late last year, the decision was to remaster the EP to the delight of the fans. The first 'Open' is very minimal with a very sparse beat to it. Glitch ambient and the cuts and click style of that period is wonderfully represented by this sound. To most fans of the release, 'Close' is the reason for the buzz. The combination of field recordings, glitch and a beautiful almost movie like soundtrack to it, makes this piece one of the most beautiful ambient pieces in the genre of glitch ambient. Hearing this remastered, really brings out the beauty even more so. This new version also features the very worthy piece 'Licht' to close out the release. It is very fitting that the amazing Morr Music honor this piece by releasing it.

Review: We're big fans of the artwork on this one from the young Fluyo label. It's nothing new, but the smeared and trippy blend of late night neon colours perfectly encapsulates the music on the record - well, to us at least. It is an offering from Loops Vago that opens with 'The Mobility Of Her Features' with proggy chords and 90s techno drum sounds that grow in intensity. 'Filler 4' rides on icy broken beats with buffed up and silvery drums back by celestial chords. 'Laughing Stock' layers up tribal techno-trance percussion and 'VST Atlas' slows things right down to a nice dubbed out deep house vibe.

Review: A keystone label in the minimal and tech house world, Butter Side Up are yet to disappoint, adding another dazzling release to their collection, welcoming back Liquid Earth for 'Deputy Dog' - his second EP on the label. Exploring a sublime and spaced-out club sound, the LA-based artist is a new school mainstay, having previously appeared on the likes of renowned label Kalahari Oyster Cult and his own label project, Liquid Earth Physical. Tight punchy drums and swirling, interplanetary pads veer into view with the opening track '2 Tha Dance Floor'. Next up, the title track 'Deputy Dog' arrives as a wonky counterpart with bleeping and squeaking modulated beats dancing over a full-bodied bassline. On the flip side, 'Rim City' touches on a West Coast house sound with funk-infused chords and energetic, driving drums. Closing things up, 'Feels So Good (As It Should)' loosens things up, flowing between shimmering cymbals and a delicate, vapour-like synth melody, punctuating the track at points and then swerving out of view at other moments. A wonderfully varied release from a do-no-wrong label and an up-and-coming producer to get excited about.

Review: Liquid Earth is an alias of new school underground house hero Urulu and he's dropped fine beats on Kalahari Oyster Cult, Butter Side up and Small Hours. He has also recently started his own self-titled label which is where he arrives now with four more fresh and well-infused cuts of spaced-out breaks, electro, house and minimal. This one starts with 'The Breakdown' (Charms Of Gaia mix) which has fast-paced trance-techno overtones. The Trips & Skips mix of the same tune is more dark and on the flip are the whacked-out acid-laced breakbeats of 'The Closer' and 'Cobblestone Stomper,' a white knuckle tech house thriller.

Review: Liquid Earth is another alias for the cult underground house beat maker Urulu and here he lands on Kalahari Oyster Cult with another fine bit of futurist house. 'Scope Zone' is a great meeting point between cosmic synth work, spaced out breaks and retro house action. It's got a fat bassline that powers it onwards and some mice subtle prog melody. On the reverse is a Youandewan remix from the Berlin based Brit who is in superb form right now. He smooths things out, keeps the bounce and heads for the stars. A tidy two tracker for sure.
