Review: Mother Tongue pushes on with more sounds from the constantly evolving creative mind of Julion De'Angelo. His vibe is soulful, modern yet proudly Black, and always has a big focus on the dumps. This debut for the label carries on that tradition with opener 'NOWnormal' built on a rugged rhythm and laden with percussion and off-grid chords. 'NotAnotherCafe!!' (with Deon Jamar - Turmeric Latte mix) has more sunny synths and a percolating low end reminiscent of Theo Parrish and 'MyzticBounz' rides roughshod on broken beats and busted synths that bring a raw sense of soul.

Review: BQD Trax's 404th EP pairs two veterans off on the same 12". Phil Evans and Dana Ruh take one side each of this nice analogue offering. Evans goes first with 'In Time' which is coated in nice dusty pads and frayed medic edges with a grinding melody that brings some funk to the deepness. 'I'm Down' is another rugged deep house cut with loose kick patterns and swirling pads. Ruh then brings her signature smoky basement house sounds to 'S41' with its rickety percussion and warm infusing of supple synths. 'S45' shuts down with dubbed-out drums and molten chords that serve as a perfect early evening warm-up.

Review: Da Lukas's Satisfy Your Soul EP is a four-track full of disco goodness that opens with the title track, a driving, percussive workout with a powerful vocal performance. 'Let Your Body Be Free' continues the party music with a dynamic horn section and disco breakdown. 'Supergood' is a hi-energy dancefloor anthem, with a pumping beat an infectious filtered house sound. It's a ninth outing and in the time it has taken for those to come out, increasing numbers of people have been catching on to the label's work and making it a 'must check' in their mental lists. This one opens up with 'Couldnt Hate You' which has some Ian Brown vocals samples stitched into a glitchy and menacing beat. Review: Originally released in 1994 and now reissued in 2024, confirming the resurgence of interest in the classic jungle sound, 'Watch Out' is a hard-hitting jungle track with a relentless 'Amen' break, while 'Media' offers a more complex and atmospheric soundscape with a deep, broken bassline.. Review: Befitting of the label's name, Drumsauw aka. Joseph Sutherland keeps to the Code with a fresh three-tracker of megatechno heaters. Starting things off with the entraining but no less driving dreamer 'Focus', we're met with riveting sixteenthy knocks and dour breakdowns, a formula devoutly followed throughout; the B offers up two further alarmist pummellings of the third kind, with 'Set Back' repeatedly jabbing the podiatric floor with pressurised weight-kicks and offhand "push it" voxxes, and 'Escape' continuing to sound said alarm while insisting that we "escape" the laboratory, now quarantined to sift out those hesitant to dance.

Review: The present face of IDM is here heard occupied by dream duo D'Arcangelo and Karsten Plum, whose latest joint effort for Acid Avengers bowls us over with its acid tweezings, pangs, twingings, twangs, thrums and flits-past. The pH scale skyrockets to the point of insanity on Pflum's side, with 'Hornfish Acid' and 'Aroe Acid' jointly corroding the full length of the Earth's core with their snippy but incisive sizzles and 'ows, until we reach a forbidden underworld uncannily reminiscent of Oz - except the faces of the protagonists are horribly twisted into a yellow, illegal-raved rictuses. D'Arcangelo's 'Gawain' does equally as much with its eerie sprung-verbed chroma-chords and muted but moving melodies; so too does 'Walker Two' raise the tempo to silly speeds, coming as a veritable velociraptor of Druqks-y breaks and drill bits, all let loose from the barrel at a surely illegal rate of fire.

Review: It's rather hard to nail the Halloween dance vibe and yet also keep things light and jumpy, but the latest 'Out Of The Crypt' V/A compilation by the sweet folks over at Spooky Wooky have done just that. In fact, they're an entire label dedicated to the cartoon vampire-batty, kitsch smiling pumpkinned, brains-starved nuts-and-bolts-Frankenstein'ed theme: the propulsive monster-mashes therein are just as wicked and weird, with opener 'Je Suis Dans La Nuit' deploying reflective eskimo synths and crepuscular bass progressions; Phase O'Matic's 'Diskotech' making use of raw, flitty bleep leads and dead-of-night screams; and Lazer Man's 'Ozonar 12' opting for hollowed-out dub techno stabs and slinky minimal movements down below.

Review: French outfit Disco Records - whose name is a masterclass in SEO - returns for four new disco edits, this time housed in a deep purple sleeve. On the A, we hear nominally unchanged, but sonically-tampered-with, versions of Billy Frasier's 'The Mind Blower...' and King Tutt's 'You Got Me Hung Up'. The B-side, meanwhile, flaunts two further excellent cuts reworking The Hippolytes and Ozone, the latter of which is a particularly intoxicating slice of laserific, finger-licking boogie.

Review: Twilight is the latest piece by long time DJ, producer and remixer, Dominic Dawson. The Japanese label Flower, has released this single to 7" complete with a remix for the second side. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Both versions have their place in any house setlist and will set the tone for any eclectic DJ set. With the DJing background Dominic has, he is a great guide to setting the mood with music. Like the title artwork suggests, this is perfect music to watch the sun go down to.

Review: TV Hill Records starts things off rough and curiosity-rousing, with a technical itch from OG AG (Andrew Grant) in collaboration with fellow producer Dimneonsum. A mid-paced deep techno calculator, 'What's Up Everybody' pares back any semblance of emotion for pure robotic urgency, with every sound moving in juddering clockwork lockstep in an abstracted world of pure, preservative mathematic topology. Opener 'San Fran' pits nervous FM loops against an equally anxious Shepard-tonal riser, while calmer moments such as the beatless 'Drakey' still disquiet with their eerie glassiness. One for the bleepy heads, the only humanistic element is the revelatory vocal sample on 'Found Out'.

Review: See-Saw records out of the Netherlands were a well-respected label very early in the rave era. Starting way back in 1991, the label was known for being one of the first rave labels in the area but also respected for their variety of styles like house, techno, hardcore and trance music. Their third record and one of their most desired The Jewel EP by Diamonds & Pearls aka Gijs Vroom, is getting a welcomed reissue on the Late Night Burners label. This reissue is a mirror to the original that features the heavy piano house monster 'What You Do To Me', the Euro house gem 'What You Do To Disco' and the Chicago influenced 'Rockin' Your World'. We can't say enough great things about the beautifully mellow ambient house track 'Perspective' which perfectly captures the amazing chill out sound of the time. A very worthy and welcomed reissue from beginnings of of rave post the New Beat era in the Netherlands.

Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. The label head brings some upright drums and spoken word lyrics for a beautifully warm sound and last of all Detroit royalty Rick Wilhite links with Jon Easley for a final blissed-out and breezy deep house day dream.

Review: DJ Tijzza from Berlin overturns his lapels for a look into his latest illicit wares, this time taking the form of a pair of 'Nasty Tools' to top up Mood Waves' Rap Moods series. Said Rap Moods are essentially dirty house cuts interspersed with obscure hip-hop vocal samples; this is indeed a form in which you cannot go wrong. 'Rap House Jam' compels us to depart from the sofa and relocate to the street floor, with a four-bar vox from god knows where furthering our motivations ever-forward; 'Micro Twerker' is bassier and sparser, but brings proper energy when the thematic "shake yo weight" sample is heard.

Review: The NOID imprint out of Belgium returns with its second vinyl drop, and this time takes you into some serene realms of breakbeat-driven pleasure court yes of Dave NA. His Altura EP opens with 'Escape', a wide open and airy mix of wispy synths and dusty, floating breaks. 'Elevation' has a more churning rhythm and dubby undercurrent and 'Pulse' (feat Freq444) has a hypnagogic feel, smeared vocal cries and more raw percussive patterns. 'Novox' (feat Freq444) shuts down with the most heavy and moody breakfast of the lot, a certain jungle swagger and plenty of heavy bass.

Review: The young Soul Touch Productions label knocks it out of the park once more with this new 12" featuring Motor City royals at the top of their game. Terrence Parker kicks off with the beautifully uplifting 'Tonight We Luv' with its streaming and soulful melodies and nice smooth drum loops. Review: The talented Greek duo Artificial DRM - already renowned for their contributions to Koslif, De Stijl and Semantica Records - come through for the sixth Alpengluhen release. 'Enigma' is a curious experimental, IDM and ambient release, neither settling for out-and-out categorisability nor giving up the danceable ends of things and happily resting in the crosstalk between genres. All circling around similar tempi but with some variation therein, these four unnamed tracks reveal themselves, together with their textural details, only as slowly as a desert landscape might reveal itself to a parched wanderer; only through somatic repetitions, such as endless walking, panting, and squinting - compare these to deep listening and/or uninterrupted turntable playing - might we make out the mirages or fata morgana through the horizontal heat haze.

Review: Nu Groove is one of those labels that everyone who knows recognises as having played a key part in the early house movement. Based out of the New York scene on the East Coast it had a distinctive 90s deep house sound which DJ Steaw now taps into but with his own twist. His grooves are jacked up and analogue, densely packed but high on warmth and soul. 'Take It There' is a prickly opener and 'Seascape' then brings some acid. 'Close To U' has a more low-slung groove that is peppered with raw claps and last of all, 'Exotica' brings some cosmic synth work to crisp, funked-up and electro-tinged rhythms.

Review: It's no wonder Dopplereffekt named their latest EP 'Inifinite Tetraspace'. For starters, a tetrahedron is a 3D triangular pyramid of equal lengths per side. A sine wave, meanwhile, is in auditory form considered the purest, most basic sound - it is also the graph produced by plotting all the ratio points between two sides of a triangle. The logical conclusion is this: infinite tetraspace might be considered the ultimate form of repetitive sound, carrying on forever, triangulating constantly in all directions, never ceasing. For all its vivid imaginings, Dopplereffekt's dualistic, stereo-effected sound carries on in full force on their latest EP for Curtis Electronix, tetra-scribing four icy, unsettling entities that may only be encountered in this special extra-conscious zone.

Review: Dave Seaman and Steve Parry's Selador Recordings imprint releases most of its music digitally, serving up the most in-demand tracks on vinyl via the ongoing Magic Black Plastic Series. Volume five in the series boasts four more tried-and-tested treats, beginning with Clavis' gorgeous remix of Charles Webster and Ursula Rucker's 'Begin Anew' - all bubbly, hypnotic electronic bass, trippy tech-house noises, immersive chords, bouncy beats and poetic spoken word vocals. Timanto blurs the boundaries between warming deep house and melody-rich progressive house on 'Other Side', before Dave Seaman joins forces with Thomas Gandey on the low-slung dark room moodiness of 'Heavyweight Residue'. To round off the EP, Harcourt delivers a hypnotic, soft-touch tech-house take on 'Red James' by Robert Babicz.

Review: Minimal production/DJ master Ricardo Villalobos enjoys a renown that lends him just about enough credo to release anything he likes whenever he likes and this latest pair of remixes of Paul Desenne's (in collaboration with Alonso Toro and Pedro Vasquez) 'Isiminaimanin' - the lead track from his gemlike Venezuelan gem of an album, Alzheimer - is a case in point. A furtive legend of the Venezuelan folk underground, Alzheimer, which was released back in 2001, expressed Desenne's talents and tastes, expansive outwards from his own Latin cello home-stretch and into further-afield wildernesses such as the Venezuelan cuatro (small guitar), Hawaiian bamboo clarinet, and electric cello - all instruments in constructing totemic, tribal, conceptual flights of fancy. It's this eclecticism on which Villalobos evidently feeds, with his two mixes expressing both fast and slow minimal-tech iterations of Desenne's mysticism.

Review: Mike Dehnert delivers a versatile four-track EP of his signature slippery machine funq on Syncrophone, with tendrils of influence unfurling in a plethora of directions, from DJ Rush and Paul Johnson's springheeled Chi-town bump to the more recent soul leanings of John FM and Omar S' FXHE alumni. Opener 'Un' is the most conservative, with a restless shuffling b-line and surgically cropped hats assembled for maximum club pressure, while 'Deux' is a spacious, clattering soulful trip full of small room synth squelch and honeyed vocal mantras. Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party.
