Review: Artificial Owl Recordings welcomes aboard New Yorkers Satoshi Tomiie and Naotake Gunji for the label's fifth release; a recording of their collaborative A_A project and live show, which first came to light at the Fridman Gallery in Manhattan. A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

Review: A aka Mika Vainio's 'Fermionit' is a significant release from the late Finnish producer, who passed away in 2017. Originally featured in a Belgium Detuned 6x12 boxset just before his death, the track received critical acclaim from collectors and fans. Now, it returns to Mika's own Sahko label for a well-deserved 12" release. 'Fermionit' embodies the essence of Finnish techno with its minimalistic, cold and stark sound. The track's passive-aggressive edge showcases Vainio's signature style, blending raw, unfiltered textures with a profound sense of depth. This release not only honors Vainio's legacy but also offers a chance for new listeners to experience the pure DNA of Finnish techno. An essential listen for fans of minimalist and avant-garde electronic music.

Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion
Floating In Ecstasy
Silver Cloud Dream Come True
Review: There's something heart warming about the faulty connection glitches and dusty electronics of a Darren Cunningham production. "Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion" from the Silver Clouds EP is one such example. Noises which would normally sound out of place sit ever-eloquently between plucked harps strings, reverberating bells and wood block percussion. At first "Floating In Ecstasy" is a little confusing - is it whether 33rpm or 45rpm? Pitched down it sounds like something that could soundtrack a scene of a staggering ghoul bearing down on a cornered victim, while pitched up it sounds somewhere between 80s EBM and electronic gothic rock. "Silver Cloud Dream Come True" however is definitely meant for 45rpm play with a drum pattern that jitters intermittently between varied glockenspiel chimes.

Actress Meets Shangaan A
Actress Meets Shangaan B
Review: Given its loose nature, the prospect of reworkings of Shangaan music from Actress, whose material is often as wild and tumbling as it comes, was always going to be something far out, and he hasn't disappointed us. His A-Side is pure Drexciyan funk bliss, as disembodied vocals are smeared in broken chords, R2-D2 bleeps and radio static beamed in from a distant nebula, cracked and warped but somehow with a solid pulse at its core. The B-Side meanwhile is even crazier, keeping the furious tempo of the original music but distilling it down to its base elements, leaving a marimba tone that is blunt and vehemently lo-fi, but somehow coming across with the same haunted atmosphere as its counterpart. Highly recommended.

Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Simbiosi remix) (6:40)
Review: Germany's K7 have got it on lock-down with this latest 12', a full rework EP of Actress' "Bird Matrix" killer by a pair of dance luminaries. First up is Kid606, a man who has been making 'outsider' music since before the term was ever coined, and one who has been every bit as important to the dance music scene all the more commercial names. Kid606's Club Mix is driving, filled with slithering percussion and led by a gorgeous swarm of aqueous synths and Zelda-like sonics, while the dub version slows things down and muddies the groove up into a heady, meditative bundle of melodies and beats. Simbiosi, on the other hand, goes for the jugular and delivers a heavy, stomping techno retuning of the original - what a blinder! There's also a tune by the mysterious Gnesis, "Pear", which appeared on Actress' own K7 compilation. Ya need!

Review: Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. This is banging brain dynamite coated in the man's iconic style and flair. Welcome back AFX, and many hats off to Warp for making it happen.

Jam1 (short version)
Review: As a selector for the Standard Place party and host of the excellent No Boring Intros NTS show, Jon Rust already commands a formidable reputation amongst those that know. It's becoming increasingly evident Rust's eye and ear for sonic excellence is making his Levels label one to watch. This second release throws the spotlight on Estonian producers Ajukaja and Andrevski and is a real delight! Ajukaja is something of a musical hero back in Estonia and we suggest you check out the Porridge Bullet label he runs if you like what you hear on these three tracks. Drawing their formative interests in industrial and ambient sounds into the deep house template, Ajukaja and Andrevski are on most impressive form with A Side cut "Rare Birds" which positively glides in a manner akin to a Tallin-born Mr Beatnick. Do not sleep on this!

Scual - "The Fade Of John Gray"
Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. What a blinder!

Gravure/Continuum (Fis Hayfield To New Mills version) (7:01)
Gravure/Continuum (Regis Whip Hand mix) (6:08)
Review: This 12" sees the welcome vinyl edition of remixes of Akkord's "Gravure/Continuum" from Fis and Regis which originally appeared on a CD issued through Fabric's Houndstooth label earlier this year. With the Mancunian duo possessing such a clinical take on rhythmic construction; it's always interesting to see how artists commissioned to remix Akkord choose to approach the task. Sometime Tri Angle artist Fis is on impeccable form twisting the track into paganistic string-laden ambience on his self-styled 'Hayfield To New Mills' version which brings to mind "Hashshashin Chant" era Demdike Stare. Downwards boss Regis goes for gravelly broken techno on his 'Whip Hand' mix though he channels similar levels of spectral foreboding to Fis in the underlying human groans set deep in the mix.

HTH020 (The Haxan Cloak's Cloud Of Witness)
Typeface/Greyscale ((Vatican Shadow's The World Is Complete)
Review: Earlier this year Houndstooth regulars Akkord released the HTH020 EP, in which the duo took their bass-heavy sound to darker, more industrial places. It's something explored more explicitly on this remix package, which may well have two of the year's most radical tracks revisions. Tri Angle artist The Haxan Cloak delivers the epic 10-minute "Cloud of Witness" remix, taking elements from all four of the original Akkord EP's tracks, and turning them into an unclassifiable behemoth of bass, drone and strobing beats. Vatican Shadow's take on "Greyscale" and "Typeface" is a little more conventional, but nevertheless turns the two tracks into a powerful piece of techno that would demolish a dance floor in the right setting.

Review: Lempuyang is a label you will know and respect for its high quality stream of immersive dub techno and now the man behind it, Alastair Kelly, debuts a new label with none other than revered UK techno mainstay Ibrahim Alfa Jnr. He opens up with 'Component A' which is a moody melange of slow, broken dub beats and fizzing synths. There is further experimentation on 'Untitled B2 1' which pairs a churning dub rhythm with naive and innocent melodies and lots of li-fi static. 'Entangled' ups the ante with the suggestion of a fast paced rhythm through a skeletal groove and the flip brings broken beat dub weight, meaning and percussive bass with a 2-step swagger then deep introspection on the closer. A classy EP that suggests this label is one well worth watching.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: There has been a great run of new talent popping up on R&S lately, with Shanghai Den being a notable example, and now Alma Construct debuts here to drop a selection of lo-fi studies peppered with influences from techno to hip hop. There are some distinctive forces at work behind these tunes, not least on the decidedly unhinged and magnificently realised "Deer Drink From The River", while "Imagine Them" comes on strong with a snappy bounce that wouldn't sound out of place on Music Has The Right To Children, albeit expressed with less sleepy synth tones. It's a sterling effort that leaves one wondering what's around the corner for this hitherto unknown beatsmith.

Review: If you're familiar with imprints like Nous'laer Audio, AD93, Tikita, or Semantica, but haven't yet explored the galaxy of sound coming from Ahrpe Records, now's your chance. Amandra is one of two heads behind said stable, and here the French producer shows everyone what time it is with a space walk through acid warbles and tribalistic rhythms. Neither of which give a particularly accurate description of what's here, but both are defining features of the tracks and EP as a whole. Whether it's the jazz-imbued shuffle of 'Prorokini', the phat wobbling steps of 'Brera Som Som' itself, or the wall of distorted percussion on 'Fanfaron', all four originals are standouts and hard to compare, while the cherry-picked remixes show just how much can be done with what's here, if the right ears are involved.

Review: Ambien Baby is an emergent project from the increasingly prolific D. Tiffany and Dan Rincon, both luminaries of the Vancouver scene. After a first official appearance on Normals Welcome last year, the pair are back with some deft and delightful adventures through rugged breaks, playful synth touches and a healthy dose of 90s attitude. Somehow these ingredients are deployed with that distinctive laid back West Coast vibe that makes for such compelling listening as well as potent dancefloor weapons - take "Nada (Live at Sweep Up)" as a case in point. Rolling breaks and nasty acid lines there may be, but the mood still has a heads down quality to it that just gets under your skin.

It is an alias of JS Zeiter and one that is reserved more for esoteric and electronica tracks following notable outings on labels such as Furthur Electronix, Meandyou and We're Going Deep. 'Mirage' kicks off with melancholic pads and dubby chords over crisp minimal drums that sink you into a reverie. That vibe continues through 'Virtual' and 'Haunted' which care both sophisticated atmospheres with subtle electro-tinged rhythms and quietly emotive pads. 'Solano' closes down with another icy and cavernous space that is filled with meaningful synth craft to make for another classy EP.

Review: Throughout 2016, Ancestral Voice's output has been militant to say the least. The enigmatic producer likes to do things his own way; his liquified strain of d&b has more in common with ambient music than jungle, but there is still something veritably tribalistic about it. This new EP for Samurai Horo's Horo sublabel is the perfect transformation of the artist's style, blurring the lines between club music and the utterly surreal, starting with the slow and tenebrous landscape that is "Yantra", followed by the more dubbed-out abstraction called "Eiyani". "Priests Of MU" is a sparse excursion through moody planes of sound guided by rhythmic half-breaks, while "Jadian Sun" heads ever closer to the sort of dub techno that was developed by the Chain Reaction label in the 90s. Very warmly recommended.

Review: The Demos EP sees the consistently impressive Going Good label follow killer 12"s from Moon B and Aquarian Foundation with a record from the anonymous Anom Vitruv, a producer whose combination of ambient tones and acidic, dubby techno comes with previous form on Taberbacle and Offseason. The Demos EP was originally released as a run of 50 cassettes on the Cleveland-based Tusco/Embassy Press label. The opportunity to bask in its hypnotic approach to techno should not be missed; across seven tracks it covers the kind of swirling beat haze of artists like Ital, the decayed ambient tones of Boards Of Canada, dubbed out acid and even fluttering electro-like rhythms. It may veer stylistically from genre to genre but it never does so without losing the charming nature of the producer's deep sound. Don't sleep!

Review: With the anonymous Anom Vitruv's recent Demos EP for Going Good still on heavy rotation here at Juno HQ, the producer makes a swift return on the German ZCKR label. Deftly showcasing the producer's talents for immersive soundscapes and weighty techno of the dub-leaning variety, the "AI" track of this Untitled EP sees distorted vocals and claustrophobic atmospherics give way to weighty swung beats and sweeping synthetic vistas, something almost like Bee Mask collaborating with Andy Stott. On the flip, "BI" somehow combines the tones of '90s ambient with scorched industrial noise narrated by a sinister vocal. "BII" is an even more extreme trip through texture, where deathly drums and found sound stalk a desolate wasteland of analogue sound. Highly recommended to fans of Blackest Ever Black's output - this is some next level stuff from Anom Vitruv.

By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present - see the B-side's lead cut - and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.

Review: As well as being one of electronica's most distinctive, recognisable and long serving warriors, Richard James is a man of many surprises. From his massive Soundcloud dump in 2015-6, to this unexpected 2023 EP - which was his first fully released material for around five years and appeared without warning - he likes to stay several giant leaps ahead of his public. Across its four tracks, it showcases his unmistakable, queasily melodic touch while revisiting the roots of his drill 'n' bass sound with a modern twist. Opening with 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f', the EP sets a reflective tone, its light breakbeat and melancholy melody underscored by 80s-inspired drum textures, evoking a wistful yet futuristic atmosphere. This track encapsulates the beauty of his signature style, fusing emotion with intricate production. 'Zin2 Test5' shifts the mood slightly darker, with crisp production and an optimistic undercurrent woven through its melodies. It feels like a contemplative counterpart to the opener, balancing light and shadow with finesse. The second side dives deeper into experimental territory. In 'A Room7 F760' is a fast-paced, broken-beat journey through eerie soundscapes and sinister rave melodies, teetering on the edge of chaos while retaining a hypnotic allure. Closing with 'Blackbox Life Recorder 22 (Parallax mix)', the EP ventures into dubstep territory with a deeper, growling bass and ominous undertones. a dubbier reinterpretation that offers a more textured, shadowy perspective. Black (box) ops indeed - as ever.

"Vurstep" is a wildly psychedelic banger that keeps the rhythms broken while the sound design levels tap into the same delirious vein as his ALSO work with Second Storey. "Dream Wisdom" takes things in a smoother direction, riding on laid back breaks and plush threads of melody in a vintage ambient techno style. Avebury represents the Bristol fixture's debut proper on Tempa, having contributed a cut to the label's scene defining sixth Dubstep Allstars compilation back in 2008. Review: Since it was Area that started the Kimochi Sound revolution just under a decade ago, it seems fitting that the publicity-shy artist has delivered the label's first release of a new decade. There are no new Area tracks here though, but rather a quartet of fresh reworks of classic cuts. Natan H kicks off proceedings with a deep, hypnotic, trippy and undeniably wonky revision of "Dare To Be Different", before Leif weighs in with a deliciously melodious, soft-focus revision of picturesque track "The Face Yours Reminds Me Of". Benjamin Brunn takes over on Side B and delivers two contrasting versions on "Effortlessness": the deep, wayward electro-meets-dub house drowsiness of the "Gold Plated Diamonds" mix and the heady ambient techno brilliance of the "Chrome Plated Diamonds" mix.

Review: Don't DJ, the artist otherwise known as Florian Meyer, has been increasingly active outside the immediate Salon Des Amateurs-affiliated world of Diskant, having contributed fine records to Berceuse Heroique and Emotional Response in 2015. Meyer's next solo move finds the German landing on the curious Travel By Goods label with Metasepia, which features three new Don't DJ productions and comes replete "with a transcription of a conversation between Florian Meyer (producer) and Wouter Hisschemoller (software-engineer) about the Euclidean rhythm pattern generator, bugs and the future of musical production." Loose, poly-rhythmic machine music is of course the order of the day and will appeal to the freaks that like Durian Brothers, SUED, Themes For Great Cities etc.

Rounding out the last decade with a string of stand-out releases on his own imprint, Auxiliary, the San Diego producer brings his cerebral sonic aesthetic to the fledgling Madrid label. "Loop Research" showcases a singular artist unbound by tempo and at the top of their game.

Review: James Clements continues his explorations into the depths of the grey zone as ASC with The Farthest Reaches double pack on Auxiliary. Samurai Music's Presha has excitedly called these four tracks "a definitive musical statement from one of the most important electronic musicians of our era," and who are we to argue with him? Making full usage of the format and available space, this is ASC in exploratory mode across a quartet of deep ten minute plus productions that have it all; sound design, atmosphere, groove, bass weight. To simply call these epic is selling The Farthest Reaches short!

Review: Long-serving Brit in San Diego James Clements dons his familiar ASC guise once more, for a typically atmospheric trip into deep, ambient-influenced abstract techno for Canada's Silent Season imprint. As usual, there's much to admire, from the sparse percussion, glacial electronics and icy melodies of "Deep Freeze", to the minimalist, modular-sounding hum of closer "Raging Seas". Arguably best of all, though, is "Immersion", which sees Clements expertly combine early '90s style dreamy ambient chords, textures and melodies - think Pete Namlook or early Irresistible Force - with scraped metal textures and impeccable IDM beats

Review: Although Bristol's Asusu seems to be a permanent resident of the deepest and darkest caves of the electronic music scene, he's been one of the most important artists to the Livity Sound catalogue in terms of bringing in new flavours and styles with each new release. The club scene outsider returns with a second 12" on his Impasse label blessed with three tunes that blur the lines between techno and electro. The opener "Trephine" is a rugged, swinging power house built with sliding kick drums, intricate moulds of percussion and warm licks off bass. On the B-side, "Dualism" scurries its pieces of glitch and distortion over sombre drones and rattling waves of synths, and "M39" continues down the path of the abstract thanks to a chilling backdrop of sci-fi vocal samples and alien-like sonics. A spectacular blend of sounds, and warmly recommended.

Review: Milan-based artist Atoloi steps up to take care of the small but beautifully formed Sure Thing label's third release, Inflorescenze. He opts for a meditative work "that reflects upon the tension that arises from polarity: nature and the city-bound sphere of clubbing, weight and levity, the internal world of the artist and his external environment." It results in a record that is in constant flux, swelling and recessing, rising and falling, pulling you in and pushing you away from the sinewy synth lines and distant sounds of thunder or icy drums and dubs undercurrents.

Review: Few artists are as revered as ATOM TM, nor labels as critically acclaimed as Raster Notion. This new EP is another spellbinding transmission from the edges of the musical world that features the opening and closing tracks of <3 - their successful recent collaboration - as well as their corresponding mutations. Esplendor Geometric is first to flip '0.9 (Almost A Unit)' into a dark and ruching piece of dystopian electronic sound art, and then ever excellent Belgian techno manipulator Peter van Hoesen takes 'Almost A Unit (0.9)' deep down a darkened rabbit hole.

Review: AtomTM's beautifully bleak techno visions are back on new Nacht EP. Two of the four tracks are previously unreleased gems from the Neuer Mensch album, while the other two also appear on the same record, but this time out we get them as alternate versions. We're told this much was made with "the growing meta-techno dance floor in mind" and it does have a futuristic, hyper-real sense of design to it. These are fizzing experiments that range from the eerie and cold wave inspired to the more heavy and club-ready. It's a great fresh perspective from this underground mainstay.

Review: From DJ Spider & Marshallito's surreal and heavy throwdowns to Mix Mup's snaking drum workouts, Chemotex's noisy excursions to Ekman's industrial clout, the sound of The Trilogy Tapes has been distinctly geared towards loud, pounding club tackle recently. However Will Bankhead's label has always been much more than just a dancefloor vessel, as this new offering from Carl Gari and Abdullah Miniawy demonstrates. Carl Gari is a Munich-based group comprised of Jonas Friedlich, Jonas Yamer and Till Funke, who describe themselves as psychedelic ghetto rave. Miniawy meanwhile is a noted Egyptian chanter, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Madinet El-Fayoum. Reportedly recorded in Cairo over the course of a few days, the brief collaboration has manifested in a four-track 12" with the slow-creeping sonic dread of "Nayroz" and 12-minute "Al Weyasha" undoubted highlights.

Review: With Ajukaja, Maria Minerva and Hypnosaurus now something of recognised names thanks to Tallinn-based Porridge Bullet, the label reinstates its Bullet various artist series that helped the label find its footing in 2012. Sporting a new batch of emerging artists, this second edition is as fresh-faced as the first, and perhaps the wildcard of the four tracks is Trinidad's Neville Lawrence, aka Superstar & Star, whom Porridge Bullet apparently fell in love with after discovering his YouTube channel. S&S's cut "Looking At The Star & Heavens" makes the grade thanks to Tallinn-based London ex-pat DJ Rhythm Doctor cyphering the smoky vocals and air-pushing drums of the original into a 'YouTube Mould'. Ajukaja hooks up with Porridge Bullet solid Mart Avi for an eerily minimal and quiet "Symmerty Of Human Body Jimmy Winkle Waltz", while Neuronphase makes a second VA appearance (still no solo release) with a dusty slo-mo jam joining the dots between the tropes of Madteo and Lobster Theremin records. Meanwhile Dima Disk's is given A1 privileges with a lo-fi sweety of a tune - "Casino".

Review: The third volume in the Sessions series brings together a trio of much loved producers for a series of untitled, all-star collaborations. Regular collaborators Dynamo Dreesden and SVN are joined by Dave '2562' Huismans under his now familiar A Made Up Sound alias. The studio threesome hits the ground running on the A-side workout, which sounds like an alien techno interpretation of 1990 British "bleep and bass" - all tipsy sub-bass, intoxicating bleeps and skewed TB-303 motifs. On the flip they pepper a snappy, pitched-down ghetto house groove with dreamy synthesizer flourishes ("Untitled 2"), before bathing in a bath of liquid hallucinogens on the rhythmic ambient weirdness of "Untitled 3".

Adopo - "Track 4"
Review: This release, as much as we've been waiting for it, is a little bit of a mystery. Perhaps, this is due to the label's inherent ambiguity when it comes to its aliases and letting the press know about them. In all honesty, this adds to Atelier's charm, the label run out of Berlin and one which surfaces on Hardwax's page with a new release, from time to time. Adopo, one of the three artists featuring on this latest clusterbomb, has featured prominently on the imprint and has returned alongside the unknown Flexi and Blendi. Monikers and their identities aside, this is a fantastic EP form start to finish and could possibly even be the crowning jewel in the label's run so far. Mixing up shreds of post-punk, techno and industrial, there just isn't a 'best track' on here. Flexi's "Track 1" sounds like a beefed-up instrumental of Cabaret Voltaire's mid-eighties period, while Blendi's "Track 2" is a grooving, improvisational techno sketch at high speed - a true beauty! On the flip, Adopo goes deeper and more lo-fi on both "Track 3" and "Track 4", the latter of which, alongside Flexi's opener, would sound absolutely immense on a big system. Warmly recommended, don't miss it!

Starting off on the A side is Penelope's Fiance from Thessaloniki, who serves up a lo-fi and coldwave perspective of the Boards Of Canada on "Run & Gun", while Italians Rawmance and Security team up on the slo-mo EBM mutation of "Un Bon Flic" - bringing you the sound of latter's Knick Knack Yoda burger club in Rome. Double kicks a go-go, it's the genre at its funkiest. ASC, meanwhile, sets phasers to stun with his startling slow breakbeat number that tips a nod to the early prog chapters. For serious sonic sickness head for "Trapped Within The Circuit", a muffled lo-fi paranoia jam that sounds like a really early Chemical Brothers track that been rusting in acid for the last 20 years.
