Review: Back in stock. The second part of Mika Vainio's silver series (along with Sahko001), this EP is something of a techno classic. It would later appear on the Tulkinta album, but the 12" has been out of press for over ten years, so it is wonderful to see this back on the shelves, to entice a new generation of listeners into its glorious analogue techno world. What I find so endearing about the Ø records is Vainio's ability to make minimal, edgy techno music sound so glacial and other-worldly. An Ø record sounds exactly like an Ø record and in the twelve years since this was released, nobody has managed to match or recreate anything to come close to these tracks. You know what to do, grab this now before it disappears for another ten years! Totally unmissable.

Review: Back in stock. What a treat this is, badged up with the catalogue number Sahko 1.5 this is material from Ø, aka Mika Vainio which has never been previously released on vinyl! The tracks were written in 1993, some time in between the Sahko 001 and the Sahko 002 EPs, and released on the absolutely seminal "Tulkinta" album - it has taken 10 years for them to surface finally on wax. Now thank goodness you can play these tracks as they really should be heard, very loud and possibly in a sweaty club, getting your minimal groove on. With massive support recently from none other than the hairstyle-challenged Richie Hawtin, who featured a whole heap of Ø tracks in his latest "DE9" mix CD, this release couldn't be more timely and more desired. My suggestion would be to get hold of this now before it disappears once more forever.

Jive (7:44)
Honkey (Crazy Hats) (5:42)
Ochos (6:48)
Review: The ever prolific Lee Renacre is on Constant Sound in his 100Hz guise for a fresh trip through expressive techno and house music delivered with a warm, old-skool flavour. 'Jive' skips and twirls across the A side in a swung, sprightly exploration of soft and rounded synth lines and pleasingly chunky beats, capturing a dusky ambience along the way that's so easy to melt into. 'Honkey (Crazy Hats)' takes things deeper with a more rhythm-focused joint that maintains a submerged feel throughout. 'Ochos' completes the set with a deep tech house meditation rich in melodious uplift, striking a spiritual tone which would go down very well with someone bumping records on Yoruba and other such labels.

Kobayashi Maru
Review: Slowly but surely Voodoo Down has built up a reputation as a deep house label you can trust. Its biggest release thus far was last year's Unstable Phenomenon EP by October (featuring a Joey Anderson remix), while other 12"s have featured STL Anton Zap and L'estasi Dell'oro. Of the six records that Voodoo Down has released, the artist/entity 12 x 12 has featured on half, and now the label offers the enigmatic 12 x 12 their own solo release. All three tracks are experimentally edged with "Partial" the most out-there and broken down production, while "Typical Male Behaviour" sounds like the workings of a robotic forest and creepy crawlies that inhabit it. Lastly, the title track is synthy, sunny and spaced out. More original, dope jams from the Voodoo Down crew.

Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

Track 3
Review: The second release for the ever-enigmatic Horizontal Ground label in 2013 comes from 19.21.3.11.21.20, which Discogs has now revealed to be Markus Suckut. If this is true, HG15 marks the end of magnificent year for the German, with an album on Len Faki's Figure, and a stack of remixes for labels Droid, Sleaze and Soma. "Track 1" is a funky acid workout, and something that would nestle quite neatly into a Marcel Dettmann or Roman Lindau set, while "Track 2" is a spacious dub piece that falls somewhere Ben Klock's "Gold Rush", Shed's "Bot" - and Federsen's "50 Hz". For regular listeners of Markus Suckut's music, "Track 3", with its dry beats and subtle atmospherics, will be a slap in the face for not realising it was Suckut sooner.

Review: London label No More Dreams are back with more dry-as-a-bone techno reductions by Sweden's Axel Backman. This will appeal to fans of Waveform Transmissions era Jeff Mills (particularly on the savage and cyclical grind of "93") or classic Regis and Surgeon. Shadowy British duo Rezzett get onboard for a remix of "94" on the flip , where the Trilogy Tapes affiliated artists replace the gutsy tribal stomp of the original with a deep and slow burning rendition that slithers away beneath dense tape saturation and hiss -much like a vivid dream sequence captured to VHS. Bold stuff indeed. Tip!

Passion Of A Night
Review: The Jungle referencing Valley Of The Shadows series from Hague outpost Creme Organization was launched earlier this year with the aim of halting some of the fragmentation that afflicts the underground. Given this first 12" has experienced severe pressing delays, maybe the underground should crowd source the financing of some fresh vinyl pressing plants? Regardless of that VOTS001 finds Creme joining forces with their Amsterdam-based compadres to present a two track transmission from 2AMFM, aka Nation pair Tadd Mullinix and D'Marc Cantu. The tumbling Axel F goes Jakbeat vibes of "Starfist Lazerbeam" are particularly good here! Watch out for future collaborations with LIES and upstarts Berceuse Heroique.

Review: "Time" is the first track produced by 2 Rare People and originally debuted in the summer of 2002 on Dpress Industries. This single includes 3 new versions, starting with a mix by Pascal Feos that falls somewhere between the minimal-tech house of Matthew Johnson and the potent click house of Ricardo Villalobos, yet always with the tech house groove that has become Feos' signature. The second track is a remix by Mark Broom, who delivers a potent techno groove with a powerful bassline and a distinctive melody. Review: Rory McPike returns, adding the 2200 moniker to his Dan White and Rings Around Saturn aliases on a fine 12" for the promising Sydney label Cult Trip. McPike has previously released on Forbidden Planet and Normals Welcome and you're sure to hear more of his usual raw and hardware driven jams. The slow grinding acid of "Killed By Deaf" starts things off on a good note, accompanied by rusty rhythms and a soaring synth lead that sounds like a guitar. "Outlaw" is brilliant; a dusty post punk jam that sounds like something off Faith by The Cure. On the flip "Technocracy" is a sombre and soulful deep techno jam whose lo-fi emotive vibes remind us of D'Marc Cantu. Finally the Drexciyan electro groove of "The Rig" is totally sick and will knock your socks off. Tip!

2562 - "The Wind Up"
Shed - "With Bag & Baggage"
SBTRKT - "The Unspoken"
Review: Round two of Monkeytown's already essential series of Modeselektion twelve inches drops with a suitably stellar line up chosen by the German overseers of bass demonics, Modeselektor. 2562 crafts one of his heftier moments on the A Side with "The Wind Up" an ever swirling mass of not techno not dubstep pressure typified by kaleidoscopic vocal filters, reverberant drum programming and soaring, switching industrial tones. Ostgut Ton don Shed maintains the standard on the flip via the dusty askew percussive rattle of "With Bag & Baggage", a track that's imbued with the fizziest of heavily processed synth lines. Rounding things off in fine style is SBTRKT with "The Unspoken" dropping a menacingly arpeggiated bass wiggle over retro broken drum hits and abstract melodic shifts.

Metamorphoze (6:26)
T Bov (6:34)
Review: Lovefingers' ESP Institute has absolutely smashed it over the last five years, releasing an impressive amount of music by a wide selection of disco-leaning producers from Mark E to Tornado Wallace and Soft Rocks. For this latest episode, Nenad Markovic aka 33 10 3402 is back with the fourth helping of his Mecanica series and as you'd expect, it's nuthin' but stripped back techno for the open-minded. On the A-side, "Metamorphoze" takes a heavy 4/4 kick and unleashes it beneath raucous sonics and odd modular sonics, while on the flip, "T Bov" makes no effort to meander into a straight groove and instead Markovic comes up with a broken groove that's full of dread and bleakness. Quality as per usual from the ESP mandem!

Elika (4:41)
Review: Andrew Hogge aka Lovefingers has been going strong thanks to his ESP Institute label, an imprint made up of outside thinkers such as Nenad Markovic aka 33 10 3402 and his distinctly singular brand of psychedelic techno. This is the third chapter of the Mecanica series, possibly named from and inspired by Beppe Loda's infamous mixtapes of Afro-industrial percussion disco, and "Slow Port" starts things off with a gloriously slow-burning groove filled with intricate percussion chops and slices - a true jewel! "Plutonium Certainly" is as mad as its name suggests - a mass of low frequencies and broken hi-hats dominating its structure - and "Elika" is a more docile ambient work which dives head-first into the ether...and so should you!

Cool Down
Review: The esteemed ESP Institute label overseen by digger extraordinaire Lovefingers seems to be right in the midst of a purple patch right now having just dropped excellent long players from Young Marco and the Blase duo of Secret Circuit and Suzanne Kraft. Ahead of exciting returns for Tambien and Tornado Wallace, ESP offer another sublime slice of electronic funk for the open minds out there from Nenad Markovic's 33 10 3402 project. This is the second installment of Markovic's Mecanica series and it's a sound we've personally some to associate with Beppe Loda's infamous mix tapes from the mid-80s cosmic scene in Northern Italy. Both tracks are heavily reminiscent of that era, where brash African drums meet intricate electronic manipulations and funky basslines. A beautiful crossing of post-punk, cold wave and funk. Sublime!

Review: AVN #011 sees Shifted and Ventress' Avian label look to the USA for the first time, as it taps up New York producer Shaun O'Sullivan for a six-track EP under his new 400PPM alias. O'Sullivan already has a deep knowledge of techno developed over a broad range of musical projects as anyone who has heard his excellent releases for The Corner and L.I.E.S. will attest. Bookended by two stark explorations into noise, the EP is joined by four solid techno productions which all marry the hard-hitting industrial sounds of pioneers like Adam X together with the rolling percussion and impressive sound design of the Berghain school of Dettmann and Klock. The off-kilter syncopations and metallic clutter of "Monoculture" is a particular highlight in what is another essential 12" from Avian.

Review: The sixth issue from Jealous God, and the first of what promises to be another year of intrigue for the label, pairs up visual director Juan Mendez with 51717, aka New York artist Lili Schulder. Any fans of Schulder's 51717 cassette for Opal Tapes or her Shadowlust collaboration with Svengalisghost will be excited by the prospect of some new music committed to wax and she's on wonderfully abstract form here. Listening to opening track "The Glove" is an experience similar to being slowly covered by a viscous liquid to the point of suffocation, with her barely audible spoken word delivery only adding to the sense of foreboding. Complementing this, 51717 provides two shorter but equally striking compositions with "Regard" especially chilling. It's a mood that seeps into the two Silent Servant productions with "Severed Union" ripe mixtape opener material. Do check the mix CD from Surface Tension pair Nihar Bahall & Jason Polastri too!

Review: Surface Records has never pulled any punches as one of the UK's toughest techno labels, and The 65D Mavericks have embodied the same spirit with their charged, lyrically provocative approach. After a lengthy hiatus label and artist are back in action, and sounding as fierce as ever. "False Prophets" is not for the faint hearted - an avalanche of thunderous drums and expletive-laden diatribes. "Cosmic Drift" is marginally more meditative, but still positively unhinged in its execution. "You Lost Your Mind" flails around a muddy, punky swamp of deviant sonic behaviour, and "Immovable (dub)" throws one last curveball into the long grass, stripping out the bark without losing the bite of this proudly individual group of techno marauders.

It's called Estrangement Of The Past which features a live edit (no details as to when and where is was recorded) and another remix by Surgeon. The original is breakbeat and synth screaming techno at its finest, as industrial thwacks of percussion and smatterings of acid litter the piece, while Surgeon remoulds the kick drum of the original and raises the rest of the mix from a hazy and analogue dredged deep. Seminal British techno.

Since making their debut as 90 Process last year, Julian Muller and Hadone have delivered a series of EPs that look to the rave era for inspiration. They're at it again here, serving up a slamming EP for Lobster Theremin that reeks of Vicks, Essex and sweaty parties on farmer's fields off the M25. "Hate In The Pants", for example, sounds like the offspawn of Joey Beltram and Mark 'Ruff' Ryder, "No Warehouse Needed" wraps '92 style rave stabs and sped-up vocal samples around a blistering hardcore breakbeat, and "Strictly Cut" could have been tailor-made for loved-up sunrises and illicit mountainside parties. In order words, it's a slamming collection of retro-futurust hardcore and techno bangers.

Review: Laboratory Instinct grace our shelves with the third in a quartet of 12 inch releases that act as the vinyl version for A Guy Called Gerald's recent and rather sleek ''Tronic Jazz'' album. Your attention on Side A will dominated by the spectral dalliance with vintage Detroit techno mechanics of ''Iland'', with expertly layered syncopation reverberating around to a backdrop of cavernous throbbing bass and dreamy synth lines. This contrasts nicely with the neo techno futurism of ''Just Soul'' with melancholic strings slipping between tense off-kilter drum programming and bubbling atmospherics. Proceedings shift up a gear on ''Round Eco,'' which pulsates with menacing KiNK-ish energy, with an odd vocal murmur forming the driving groove around which Simpson wraps glacial keys and deviant bass twinges. Closing track ''The Dip'' oscillates wildly with B movie sci fi synth lines and scratching metallic tones.

Opener "Thin Air" may contain creepy melodies, strange samples and curious orchestral samples, but these largely play second fiddle to a booming techno rhythm. "All Out" and "Waybackmachine" also hit home hard, with trademark rhythmic madness and densely layered chords combining to create two hectic and intense broken techno smashers. Even the EP's most laidback moment, the noticeably deeper "I Repeat", owes its' power to a surging sub-bass line and some snappy post-dubstep rhythms, rather than its' faintly unsettling electronics and melancholic musical elements.

As usual, there's plenty to enjoy, with opener "Cheater VIP" - much sought-after since he dropped it in his Boiler Room set last year - providing the near perfect fusion of funk-fuelled techno rhythms, metallic percussion and industrial textures. The rolling intensity of "Us" ups the creepy stakes even further, helped, in no small part, by some particularly ghostly cymbals.

Review: ** Repress ** Dave Huismans swiftly follows on from that incendiary 50 Weapons 12" with an equally explosive return to the Clone Basement Series. One of the first names to contribute to the series back in 2009, both "Hang Up" and "Sweetback" find Huismans eschewing the jagged, garage flecked drill techno dynamism of last year's "Take The Plunge" for some of his "most banging, straight-forward club material to date". The lead track is bristling with uneasy liquid funk, heavily diced Hancock vibes cascading around the buccaneering drum patterns with glee. "Sweetback," meanwhile, creeps out from the murky depths, driven by dust battered kicks and gnarly, sinewy analogue twists - there's no greater philosophy at work here, it's simply dark techno for dark rooms.

Review: Dave Huismans is always a producer guaranteed to confound your expectations; he released a slew of material last year that ranged from cavernous techno rave for 50 Weapons, uneasy liquid funk for Clone's Basement Series and the dehydrated desert rhythms of the Air Jordan EP. His eponymous imprint is where the real crazy stuff seems to land however, and we've been eager for another since the eardrum splitting "Take The Plunge". Thankfully this hand-stamped return to the label is no disappointment; "Ahead" is a broken combination of industrial rhythms and breakbeat-inspired sampling, described rather succinctly by one Soundcloud commenter as "stutter funk", while the B-side, entitled "Endgame" is a more conventional techno number, made no less furious thanks to its Underground Resistance undertones, serrated bass and malfunctioning drums, reminiscent of the recent Numbers reissue of Unspecified Enemies' classic "Multi Ordinal Tracking Unit". Essential!

Syrinx (7:17)
Review: Dutch producer Dave Huismans has been called many things over the years, the majority of them glowing thanks to his work as 2562 and A Made Up Sound. However we'd wager he's rarely been compared to a London bus, but that's the cliche adopted here as, like the famed mode of public transport, two A Made Up Sound 12"s drop in the same week! Both "Stumbler" and "Syrinx" have that signature Huismans blend of functionality and experimentalism on lock down with the former a particularly potent club tool! "Syrinx" is the more deranged cut, slamming hard when played loud!! Juno Records recommends!

Review: Stand up Dave Huismans. "Half Hour Jam On A Borrowed Synth" ranks as one of the best track titles of recent times! It is also one of the maddest cuts the Dutchman has committed to vinyl under either of his production handles, largely eschewing drums in favour of some slaloming synths that will cause chaos on the dancefloor. Don't disregard the lead track "Havoc" though, this one is just as deadly with Huismans laying down a killer slow motion techno monster. Both form the second of two must have AMUS 12"s to drop this week and come after a surprise outing on Acido alongside Dresvn.

Peace Offering (8:09)
Review: There's something undeniably unsettling about "Bygones", the lead track from Dave Huismans' latest outing under the A Made Up Sound pseudonym. It begins with the kind of feverish, voodoo-inspired drums regularly found on seriously heavy African drum workouts. When the metronomic kick drum comes in, it feels disarmingly out of time. It isn't, of course, but it's an undeniably trippy effect. On the flip, Huismans goes deeper, combining a hypnotic kick-drum pattern with hushed, dubbed-out chords, a locked-in bassline, and occasional melancholic melodies. It's as quietly beautiful and picturesque as the A-side is druggy and intense.

Pieces Of Me
Etched
Collapse (Rhythm)
Cycles Of Violence
Depford Blues (Excerpt)
Review: A Model Authority sees Shifted and Sigha join forces for a series of mooted releases that commence with Model 001. The new collaborative was apparently born out of "the desire to rise above the very modern mediocrity and complacency that surrounds us," and it sees both producers in a German-techno kind of mood. Much of the EP's harsh and quick-fire loops suggest an early-Regis influence, like "Pieces Of Me" and "Cycles Of Violence", while "Collapse (Rhythm)" sees three lone bass drums lumber in three-beat time like a half finished Henning Baer production. Model 001 also brings with it some industrial experimentation with "Etched" sounding like a broken television furiously exhaling white noise, while "Depford Blues (Excerpt)" is the perfect soundtrack for a Chris Cunningham remake of George Orwell's book 1984.

3-4-3 (Rolando mix)
Delta House (original mix)
Review: As he spreads his wings and reaches out to labels beyond his own Elastic Dreams imprint, A Sagittariun too reveals more dimensions to his pleasingly old-skool rooted sound with this EP on Hype LTD. "3-4-3" comes rushing at you in a blizzard of chopped up drum breaks and romping arpeggios with a distinct Underground Resistance gone 'ardcore vibe. That makes it all the more appropriate that Rolando has been assigned the remix slot on the record, notably paring the track down to a measured simmer which says a lot about the firepower the original packs. "Delta House" gives rise to a more complex kind of techno laden with sax and off-kilter drum programming in the finest B2 tradition.

Review: Often found spiraling amongst the stars, A Sagittariun takes a turn inwards for this formidable foray into tougher techno realms for MPX. The drum jack pressure is real on "No Drama", which also sports a wonderfully psychoactive synth line to wriggle into your nerve endings with potent results. Mor Elian does a killer job on the remix too, chopping up the groove to create some dynamic syncopation around that nagging synth hook. "Loose Fit" and "Hand Of Eris" on the flip keep up the percussive pressure, but there's also plenty of character rubbed into these rhythmic ripples to make it far more than a set of DJ tools.

Pseudo Science (6:03)
Heavy Manners (8:24)
Review: Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun lands on Bristol's Idle Hands with a smacking two-tracker for the techno puritans! Fair enough, the flow and structure of "Pseudo Science" might not be typically classed as traditional techno, but there is so much freedom in its half-step beats and circular percussion shots, making this a beautiful relic of the sort of dance music that was being made just before the rise of 'minimal'. On the B-side, "Heavy Manners" is slower to pick up pace, kicking off with a frosty, barren procession of hi-hats and mild beats, both giving way to the much more powerful swing of the pads and harmonies in the backdrop. Excellent.

Eye Against Eve (Marco Bernardi Elevated reshape)
Funky Archer (original mix)
Funky Archer (Aubrey remix)
Review: Arriving back in late 2011, A Sagittarium brandished a fully formed blend of becoming house and techno and a cloak of mystery and both elements to his/her/their identity have remained intact across the smattering of material that has surfaced in the subsequent period. A Transparent Mind is a fine return for A Sagittarium pairing two original productions against remixes from Marco Bernardi and Aubrey. "Eye Against Eye" demonstrates just why so many people lap up these Elastic Dreams 12"s, arising from cinematic beginnings into a unique sounding array of deep pads, cavernous bass stabs and slowed down but still eminently rolling jungle breaks. Mr Bernardi switches the mood from dream laden to nightmarish on his crunchy lo fi remix which will appeal to adoptees of the Jamal Moss school of thinking. Flip over and the wonderfully named "Funky Archer" is pure outer galactic bliss, with crisp 808 programming rising delightfully over a bed of interplanetary gurgles and streamlined synths. Again source is flipped on it's head in superlative fashion as Aubrey transforms the track into a reverberant, clanking yet still very funky dark techno track .

An Infinite Number Of Possibilities (5:40)
720 Degrees (5:55)
Review: Since 2011, or what we could describe as the rebirth of vintage electronic music and the muddled, increasingly convoluted evolution of 'bass' music, Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun has been providing our charts, and the wider scene, with consistently high levels future-proof techno. Slightly Ajar is his third release of 2017 already, and it comes through on his own Elastic Dreams imprint with a squadron of deep and effortlessly mesmerizing electronic shapes. "Stingray" opens with an ocean of euphoric pads and industrial rhythms coming together as one, and is followed elegantly by the much deeper, more reflective broken patterns of "Burning Crystal". On the B-side, "An Infinite Number Of Possibilities" kicks the gears into motion with a much bouncier, club-centric techno groove filled with surreal melodies, and "720 Degrees" buries a load of bleeps into a hypnotic bundle of sci-fi sonics for total dancefloor domination. Effective and ultra-sleek - the lot of them!

The Golden Apple (5:43)
Blue Lotus (5:09)
Liebe Tanzen (6:59)
Review: Fresh from conjuring up fresh remixes of Sabres of Paradise classic "Lick Wid Nit Wit", A Sagittariun returns to his Elastic Dreams label with more floor-focused techno alchemy. As with much of the Bristol-based veteran's work, A-side "The Golden Apple" is a no-nonsense affair, where psychedelic electronics and sparkling, ambient techno style melodic refrains slowly rise above a tough-as-teak groove. "Blue Lotus", on the other hand, makes heavy percussion the star of the show, with layered, broken tribal percussion and feverish tropical noises wrapping themselves around a slipped, mind-altering kick-drum pattern. As for flipside "Liebe Tanzen", it's a sweaty, retro-futurist peak-time treat that sits somewhere between Robert Hood, vintage Detroit techno and the psychedelic '90s UK techno that's always been one of A Sagittariun's greatest influences.

Review: NRK Sound Division head honcho Nick Harris aka A Sagitarriun returns on his own Elastic Dreams imprint with more retro inspired techno grooves on The Magick Box EP. Starting out with the loopy, dusted down, vintage sounding funk of "Kobalt", the A side is then further complimented by the rather Sahko sounding bleep techno of "Curviture" which will have you truly hypnotised by its nefarious aesthetics. On the flip, there's the thumping and functional minimal techno workout "Bleepanomix" which channels the spirit of classic Robert Hood and "Floating On Saltwater" offers an odd highlight with this haunting electro-funk workout full of rusty drum computer patterns and the unmistakeable vintage flair of analogue arpeggiations.

Review: The Innate label made a sizable impact with its first release - a killer various artists 12" with Mark Hand, Lerosa and others. Now it returns with another balanced mix of established and emergent artists, leading in with a stunning A side cut from A Sagittariun delivering what might be his most beautiful production to date - a swooning, snaking slice of melodious techno that brims with emotion and canny programming. After turning heads on the first Innate release, Gilbert returns with "Polynoid," a punchy, Lately bass-powered workout with lashings of Motor City soul heaped on top. Sean Dixon completes the package with "Our Love For Music," a pointed machine mantra that maintains the classic techno tone Innate is shaping up as its MO.
