Review: Paradise sees minimal Detroit techno icon Robert Hood exploring the Floorplan concept in more expansive style. The Floorplan project was founded in the mid '90s, as Hood looked to merge his minimalist approach with elements of house, disco, funk and gospel. Explored intermittently over a six year period, Hood put it to one side and it was a reissue of the Floorplan debut by Rush Hour that inspired him to revisit the project in 2011, scoring a bonafide gem in "We Magnify His Name". Explored in album format here, Paradise is a mixture of all new material and tracks culled from these recent M Plant 12" releases, lending the album a sense of continuity. It's all the more impressive when you consider the fact Hood's been releasing one highly conceptual album a year since 2009.

Review: Robert Hood's Floorplan alias has been a real hit over the years. Not content with captivating audiences for two decades with his minimal-futurist hypnotism on M-Plant, Floorplan explored his love of sampling, bringing back the vibe of early noughties DJ tools that looped up funk and disco classics for infectious dancefloor dynamics. The Victorious LP is the project's second full length since 2013's Paradise and is co-produced by his daughter Lyric. It features the absolutely massive "Tell You No Lie" which works those loops from the 1977 disco classic "Lovin' You Is Really My Game" by Brainstorm to full effect.

Review: Electronic icon Jeff Mills links up with fellow Detroit talent Rafael Leafar for this one on his own Axis, and it is yet another sublime exploration of the cosmos through the medium of techno. Leafar brings all his next level multi-instrumentalist skills and strong love of jazz to the duo and when combined with Mills' ability to speak through his machines, it makes for a unique record. The icy percussion rolls deep, taking you into another dimension each and every time while the noodling sax brings sombreness and soul. Big, splashy cymbals, dark chords and a real sense of mystery and intrigue keep you utterly locked throughout.

Review: Robin Edwards aka R Seiliog drops his full-length debut release on the fledgling Turnstile label only after a couple of EP's, one for Peski and another for the same Turnstile. R Seiliog's use of synthesizers is diverse as it is fun and exciting. Instead of getting an album of solitary square waves or oscillations, Edwards transforms the abstract into something more palpable and altogether more funky. Accompanied by stripped beats and quirky melodies, tracks like "Mt Essa" and "Cymatic Modes" could work just as well in a club as they could on a car radio. There are also remnants of techno within, most vividly on tracks such as "Constellation Drip", so there's something in here for everyone and just so you know, this comes warmly recommended. Pressed onto 180g vynil, complete with bonus CD and sublime artwork. Tip!

Review: Steve Rachmad has taken the global techno scene by storm both as a producer and as a much sought after remixer. His DJ exploits are second to none. For many, he is considered a father of Detroit techno in the Netherlands, respected in the world of electronic music for his deep, groovy sounds that tend to rest on impressive strings, melodies, funk and soul. The album entitled "Neo Classica" combines the sonic subtleties and frenetic nuances that takes the listener through a myriad of emotions. An album sure to build on you, it is both a gem to listen to in a relaxed state of mind as well when engaged in lightning pace.

Review: Milan's Radko first appeared a few years back on Enfant Terrible with the Cherno PPP / Brutalista ?(7') and finally resurfaces with this full-length for sublabel Gooiland Elektro titled The Dirt On Caligula. Described as darker, harsher and more daring, the album takes you deeper into their industrial sound. Opener 'Hip Dork' is a contorted kind of techno derivative that lunges straight for the jugular, while the paranoid and dystopian atmosphere created on 'Manfria' sets the scene in dark ambient style before unleashing a barrage of electro beats. Over on the flip, the gloomy vocal cut 'Leper Colony' takes influences from darkwave, ending with the punishing and abrasive grind of 'Volga' which is pitch black.

Review: The Dalmata Daniel label welcomes Rapha for Midnight Dancer, a bold new album of journey electro and electronics. 'U Win I Win' gets things underway with glistening and innocent melodies over steely analogue drums. The CT Kidobo remix) makes it more raw and elsewhere the artist plays with slower tempos for chugging cuts like 'Midnight Dancer' that still shine with bright, pixel-thin pads. Add in gems like 'Lost Star' and 'Galactico' and you have a tastefully intergalactic trip from which you won't want to return.

Review: First emerging on his own self-titled label back in 2011, Abdulla Rashim has cultivated a brand of extended, atmospheric techno that explores African and Arab motifs under a cloak of intended anonymity. Respected hubs like Prologue, Semantica and Studio Barnhus have all issued work from Rashim in one form or another and he's also developed a fine curatorial streak as the head of the Northern Electronics label. It's through this outlet that the Swedish producer issues his debut album Unanimity, with the nine-tracks exactly the kind of immersive experience one would expect, poised somewhere between the psychedelia of Dozzy and the slightly foreboding sound design that punctuated Silent Servant's excellent 2012 LP.

Review: Gesloten Cirkel is a techno hero who can do no wrong. The good news is that as Ratsnake he is no less essential. This new record on the Place No Blame label is a "conscious, meditative presentation of single take recordings from recent years." As such it tells the tale of an artist in development, learning and mastering new techniques and styles that have been touched on in his other projects. While we're told by the pros text that the album "explores the confines between society and alchemy," that doesn't really matter once your jacking to the slithering acid workout of 'Haharsh_2' or trapped in a haunting hall of synth mirrors on 'Gwyn.'

Review: Incienso's first release of 2025 is this debut album from San Francisco-based Raven. His immersive sound is detailed with warped synth lines and flickering drum patterns. 'Gnosis Theme' sets the scene with lush ambient and then things unfurl through the meditative soundscapes of 'Endless Edition' and heady, beautiful motifs of 'Infinte Red Roses.' These are meticulously layered tracks that always feel effortless and while the rhythms are subtle, they always hook you in.

Review: RBI's biggest claim to underground stardom yet is her new experimental jungle-techno-ish album Disseminate. It's said that earlier cuts like 'Proximity' did some justice to her sound, but it's artists like her who really require a lot more time per vinyl side to really demonstrate their own talents. On this LP, strangely garbled classical instruments are heard interspersed with filtered junglism and no less odd breakwork, with airy and roomy cuts like 'Vault Ultra' and '100o10o1hz' proving RBI as one of experimental dance music's foremost greats - unafraid neither of rhythm-driven bangers nor curiously weird skits.

Review: Having tumbled out of the stocks in a blur of drunken programming and maverick brushstrokes, it's safe to say that Gerry Read has successfully placed himself in a league of his own ahead of delivering an album to the world. Now that long-player arrives and it's as wild and ranging as you would expect. "Make A Move" is instantly a big hit with its stunning percussive rolls, mashed up scat singing and fractured piano stabs. There's an earthen soul at work in the samples Read is reaching for on the album, and while his style may be much more deliberately freaked out his intangible essence shares plenty with the likes of Theo Parrish and Moodymann. However where those artists are settled in a well-established groove, Read is still showing off and exploring just where his muse might take him.

And they don't come much more vital than the self-titled 1994 debut album from Jonah Sharp (aka Spacetime Continuum) and David Moufang (aka Move D). Review: Gargantuan French producer Arnaud Rebotini made his own response to the lockdown life through 2020 with a series of singles under the banner This Is A Quarantine. The eight volumes took in original material and attendant remixes from an all-star cast, and now they've been gathered together and pressed to wax. As you would expect from the synth-toting titan of Blackstrobe, this is maximal music to sink your teeth into and the remix cast more than steps up to that. The Hacker, Alessandro Adriani, VTSS, Cardopusher, Kittin - there's no shortage of heavy hitters spread across this mammoth four-disc box set of electro-techno excellence.

Review: It's been a swift ascent for Lorenz Brunner as his Recondite alias has sprung from relative obscurity in 2011 to releases for Hotflush, Acid Test and now Ghostly International, who release his second album. It's a dizzying trajectory for an artist but his maturity in the melancholic electronica he weaves allays all doubts. Indeed Ghostly makes for a logical home for the delicate rhythms and gossamer synth work that Brunner has delivered here, and there are plenty of different shades of downbeat musing to keep the mind locked in as one plaintive ballad drifts into the next. There is still room for some of the more techno-minded material that the artist can turn his hand to, but by and large this is an album for private reflection.

Review: Man of the moment Lorenz Brunner is back, this time partaking in some wild experiments with acid, on behalf of California's Acid Test imprint, no less. We all know of his signature sound by now; dark and melodic journey tracks. His interpretation of said style, focusing mainly around the little silver Roland box yields some tremendous results here, adhering to the label M.O. in fine form after some serious efforts by Donato Dozzy and Tin Man. Beginning with the ultra-deep and reductionist "Compel" which is reminiscent of early Plastikman, he then launches into the funky R&B tempo of "Pass Up" and the sombre and emotional tones of "Undulate" which gets the first four to the floor beat going. Life & Death label mates Tale Of Us join Brunner on the stunningly soulful "Sequenze" while "Subdue" presents his darkest side on the album. Later on "Ley" gets a peak time level stomp on, in fine acidic style. While Brunner has most definitely found his stride, leading to current mass appeal, he certainly proves he still has underground credentials on this fine effort.

Review: Sebastian Kramer's debut Redshape album, The Dance Paradox, was an ambitious work, with the German producer making reference to Carl Craig, Moodymann and deep house producers like Chez Damier. Its follow up, Square, has a smaller range, but its tighter focus means that it sounds more like Redshape himself than those he takes inspiration from. All of the elements that have made the project so respected are present here: "It's In Rain" teems with crisp drums and the brooding, humming bass, grainy and crackling, that has become the project's staple - the inclusion of an astronaut sample adds some levity to a sound sometimes seen as ultra-serious. "Starsoup" sees Kramer strip away the layers and focus on the groove, with a bleepy bassline and noisy, broken beats prevailing, while "Departing" is a fantastically hypnotic, expansive deep techno workout. One of Redshape's other sides is audible on "Moods & Mice". Like some of the material on The Dance Paradox, "Moods" features lazy drums and warm synth lines. He explores this theme further on "Paper". Like Paradox, it sounds like Redshape has hired a live drummer and he she/he freeforms their way through textured sounds. So while Squares is a deft distillation of Redshape's nuances, it also features a left of centre take on hip-hop, with Space Ape chatting over the loose, mid-tempo drums of "Until We Burn".

Review: Through The Spirit Realm is Refracted's first LP to date, and it comes Canada's excellent Silent Season, a home to Rasmus Hedlund, Quantec, and ASC, among others. "Enter The Jungle" quickly gives a picture of what's to come thanks to the track's abstract blend of animal sounds, a myriad of noises which is swallowed up the warm and dubby swings of "The Jungle Is Thick" - a Donato Dozzy kinda lick. The whole LP follows a similar string of thought, one that binds stripped back techno together with deep ambience and slow-moving plates of drone; "The Ritual Begins" is simply hypnotic and we could keep it on for hours on loop. It's tribalism at its most cutting-edge, and an altogether fantastic debut performance from this growing techno personality.

Review: Mind Express boss Refracted, AKA Berlin's Alex Moya, emerges from the depths of some murky, oily, opaque lake. A place unsettling and unnerving - the site of some unknown tension - but also wonderfully inimitable and hard to countenance. Powerful stuff, just not really in a way that immediately presents itself as such. Nevertheless, before you know it these tones have enveloped and ensnared. Call it ambient techno, call it ambient, call it pure futurism - parts here almost feel like the ambient noises of familiar things that haven't been invented yet. If that makes sense? A moody precog of a record, it whirs and drones, echoes and dissipates. There are moments when structure become more defined, like the mystery of 'Initiation', but for the most part these are aural infinity loops.

It is a work of fantastic space and atmosphere, with pulsing rhythms from the techno world brushing up next to cavernous post-dubstep bass wobblers. The excellent 'Blinding Horses' is a sumptuous bit of broken beat, dubbed out skeletal techno and 'Solution' (String version) is a gorgeous piece that shows a tender classical side to Regis. It's his rugged and gritty techno as on 'The Master' which he will always be best known and loved for, however.

This new limited edition repress comes with all new artwork, too. The album is pretty definitive of the loopy, hard edged techno of the time and it was another 20 years until Regis offered a follow up after plenty of time as part of British Murder Boys and Sandwell District. Each of these tracks still kicks with serious force, from the bulky sound of 'Get On Your Knees' to the backlit glow of 'Penetration.'

There is plenty to set the pulse racing throughout the collection. "EBM supergroup" You Hung impresses via the moody and clanking, mid-80s industrial vibes of "The Truth Was Different (Live)", while Obelus' "Scale Reference" sounds like Richard D James after a particularly potent bong hit. Simon Shreeve's "The Space Between Cultures" is a creepy slab of ambient/noise fusion, Layne's "Raising Up, Removal" is a delightfully out there journey into metallic electro headiness and DVA Damas' sub-heavy cut "People Say I'm Cool" is as stylish and, let's face it, cool as the title suggests.

Review: The restart of the legendary Evolution/Universal Language label! Here is the first three mind-blowing releases, re-mastered and presented as a limited 3x12" package. In the early 90's Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton released some highly limited records on their Evolution label which later became Universal Language. All records were groundbreaking releases and Tom and Mark continued to produce many great records as Reload, Global Communications, Jedi Knights, Harmonic 33 and several others projects. These three records represent the beginning of the electronica movement which they started with like minded artist such as Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, Autechre and some others. Deep raw and forward thinking techno in the same style as Aphex Twin's early releases.

Review: Lukid & Tapes combine their scuzzy sounds once more as Rezzett for this new and sonically fucked up outing on The Trilogy tapes. It's lo-fi music full of perfect imperfections and dusty sound sources, cruddy rhythms and distant cosmic noise that sounds both as if dug up from under many layers of ancient soil but also somehow sent back from the future. It is now a decade since this pair made their first outing but their sound remains fascinatingly original. For loose genre references, imagine breakbeat hardcore, 90s jungle, granular Detroit techno and raw Chicago house all chucked into a blender.

Review: This album showcases the series of heavily reggae-orientated tunes that was created throughout the past three years - starting with the landmark 'King In My Empire' with Cornel Campbell - which so far has only been available on 10" vinyl format. After the previous Burial Mix album Showcase (BMD-1, released 1998), exclusively with vocals by Paul St. Hilaire, the present release features eight tunes, voiced in Berlin, New York and Jamaica by seven artists, some of them living legends; Cornel Campbell, Paul St. Hilaire, Shalom, The Chosen Brothers, Love Joy, Jennifer Lara and Jah Batta. Released simultaneously, The Versions (BMD-3) contains the corresponding instrumental versions backed with dubs that integrate minimal structures with Rhythm & Sound's breathtaking atmospheric density. An essential twin-release.

Review: Ribe is back on PoleGroup which is always going to get our attention, as well as that of any real techno head. This time it is with Las Tres Puertas which is a superb eight-track double 12". The title track opens in dramatic fashion with chords full of tension and train track beats that loop infectiously. There is a more experimental feel to the fuzzy loops of 'La Rabia', 'El Sutil Arte' is full of edge and tension thanks to a loud, centred drone and 'El Nuevo Mundo' is a dystopian and swampy soundtrack to a dark day on a distant planet. In between are many more intriguing sound designs and unusual rhythms.

Review: After a good eight years of releasing singles across the world, Tokyo's Rondenion has finally made the leap to long player for Roundabout Sounds. Luster Grand Hotel sums up the musical character Rondenion has been building over the years, all dusty breaks, crackly movie samples and haunting instrumentation licks with a predilection towards the mood of Detroit house music. This is no more apparent than in the addictive beat down of "Never Despair" with its jazzed-out chords and heavy percussive roll. Rather than an album of any high concept, each rock solid track is followed by another which leaves you with a doublepack of unshakably good house music.

Review: The cheeky aesthetic of Ping Discs shouldn't fool you - the sonics inside are nothing to be trifled with. Just ask Roy of the Ravers, who shares a similar spirit of tongue-in-cheek rave nostalgia framing stunning hardware house and techno to Ping Discs founder Myoptik. The pair trade tracks and titters back and forth, moving from one advanced acid bomb to the next via some hilarious segues, giving you a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. Just listen to 'Roy Of The Ravers Acid' and you'll feel like the whole world around you is dripping in lysergic 303 fluid. Remixing each other as well as offering up original tracks, the fusion between artists here is incredibly fluid, making this an amazingly cohesive album for those who want the most inventive acid on the market.

Now at home on local Delft label Bordello A Parigi, From Reason To Ritual brings us up to speed by way of the insistent synth shots of "On The Edge Of Time", the stuttering breaks and coldwave pads and haunted human textures of "Chasing After Shadows" and the staunch gothic sci-fi stomps of "I Represent The Darkness". Loaded with a gritty sense of foreboding and relentless techno pace throughout, if anything Rude 66 sounds even more relevant and resonant than ever before.

Review: Creme Organisation compile a superb compilation of the 90s DJAX and Acid Planet output of Ruse 66, aka Ruud Lekx. Over two delicious clear 12"s we're treated to a captivating journey through vintage acid, techno, electro ambient and industrial sounds. Highlights on the first vinyl are plentiful, drifting from the straight up filthy electro jack of "Two Worlds" to the dread-filled 4am techno of "Rude 66" and squelch 'n claps acid of "Acid Trip Soft". Head straight for the industrial wallop of "Minus 8 Remix" on the second vinyl, which also contains some sweat-drenched Chicago house ("No Cure"), dubby broken beat techno ("La Route") and swirling, atmospheric cyberpunk ambience ("Images"). One for fans of old school Joey Beltram, R&S and Model 500.

Review: Paris outpost In Paradisum have been simply unstoppable since their first releases featuring the likes of Low Jack and Qoso back a few years ago. Since then, the devious imprint has been releasing a tonne of experimental material by new and unknown talent such as Insiden, Mondkopf and Roger West. This time, however, its Hannover-based Luke Calzonetti - former member of grindcore band Child Abuse - who lands on the label's roster with his Run Dust moniker. Much like the sound that he's known for, these tracks are a perfect unison of noise and techno, where grizzly swirls of hardware feedback are moved into some form or shape by the rigidity of the drums beneath. There's plenty in here and this LP might well be one of the best the label has released. Warmly recommended and hotly tipped!

Review: Dublin-based artist Rustal is Peter Sweeney and he has a deep sound that he now brings to New York's renowned BlackCat label. Three of these originals are recorded in one-take performances at BlackCat HQ in the summer of 2024 and one is a dub reggae jam made in collaboration with label boss Jack Russell and Sonuga. 'Angel Of Light' is a widescreen dub techno opener with fuzzy, fizzy synths ripping out to infinity over dynamic drums. 'Flower Brick' is more intense with the oversized hi-hat ringlets and 'Ukiyo' is minimal and sparse in its drums and pads but soon locks you in. 'Burn Down Babylon' is a late-night stoner soundtrack for full mental immersion.

Review: Steven Rutter is B12, a cult producer with a hardcore following, and for good reason. He has very much defined the deep techno genre with his music on labels like Warp in the early days, then followed it up with gold on Delsin and Soma before deciding to revert to his own name. The sounds are just as good as ever, though, as this third album proves. It's got all his usual signifiers - cosmic motifs, sci-fi pads, spacious and heady arrangements - as well as inviting downtempo groovers that pull you into deep to this alien world. Playing out like a fully journey rather than collecting of tracks, 'Riddle Me Sane' is another mini masterclass.

Review: Usually, RX-101 unabashedly follows in the footsteps of early IDM stalwarts like AFX and Skam, and brings fresh Dutch takes on the style with every new release. Coming once again to Suction Records, 'New Discoveries' sidesteps into the realm of dreamy Detroit-style techno, framing acid braindance through the lens of this important midwestern US dance genre. Recalling the recent sounds of Bochum Welt or Roy Of The Ravers - and more classic ideas from UK-Detroit producers like B12 and Kirk DiGiorgio - this is a fantastically astral acid release.

Review: The Sushitech 15th anniversary celebrations have been a long and winding trip back through the imperious tech house label's dub-soaked back catalogue, and it finally comes to rest on this gem from 2017. Marco Rhauderwiek's sound is pure Sushitech, all billowing dub techno blooms and heads-down, late night beats, but the presence of Paul St. Hilaire takes the music to another level entirely. The legendary veteran of Rhythm & Sound and so much more dub-techno crossover business since, the man like Tikiman has a voice synonymous with this style, and he sits beautifully in Rhauder's elegant groove sculptures. Highly prized since its original release, it's a show-stopping release which beautifully draws a line under Sushitech's moment of reflection.

Review: S.A.T. is the new production unit formed of Jerome Sydenham, AYBEE and Ron Trent, three individuals whose respective discographies command instant respect. What apparently started as a simple dinner one night has grown into a full album between the three who evidently struck on a studio chemistry that warrants further material on the strength of this eight track album. Issued by Sydenham's Ibadan label, SAT lives up to the sales notes billing as "loose and organic" and cuts like "The Gate" and "She Was" have that timeless quality one expects from a project Ron Trent is involved in. It all feels remarkably cohesive despite the fact the trio completed the album in under three weeks.

Review: According to the accompany information, VRIL and Rodhad's first collaborative full-length was dually inspired by a desire to "subvert the expectations of their previous work" and the real world phenomena of unusual artefacts that baffle both archaeologists and historians (in their words, "strange anomalies scattered throughout the world"). Musically, the album is something of a slown-burn treat, with the pair slowly ambling between heady ambient soundscapes, buzzing, slow-motion psychedelic techno, creepy and bass-heavy electronic experiments, acid-flecked IDM, deep dub techno and productions that cannily blur the boundaries between these various stylistic touchpoints. As a result, Out of Place Artefacts is a startling and hugely enjoyable collection of mysterious musical movements.
