Review: Upwellings' latest for his local Lithuanian label Greyscale, 'Lark Dub', is something of a a dub techno masterclass, shifting through subtle echoic phases and left-right-panned chords. The four tracks here imply a journey through some otherworldly cosmos, with curiosities such as 'Fed On Dub' conveying a dark world of unfortunate (or, perhaps, fortunate after all) creatures whose entire daily reference intake consists of dub topi. It's a subsistence living, for sure, but rather than misery, it amounts to a spiritually satisfying, ascetic lifestyle. Remixes from Bluetrain, Ohm & Octal Industries round off the B, pushing through the vinyl crackle into detuned, forward-propulsive moods.

Review: Mosaic main man and peerless UK dub techno titan Steve O'Sullivan has paired off against Fletcher for this latest heavyweight 12". As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. It's a classic amongst many on this label. 'With That' is another tight, compelling and tech tinged dub roller with real bite and drive, and 'Treading Water' then blisses you out with its liquid chords and sense of endless infinite groove.

Review: The latest installment of the occasional Phonica White series comes from a familiar favourite, Berlin-based Japanese producer Iori. This is his third contribution to the series, all told, and is every bit as impressive as its' predecessors. He begins with "Monsoon", an atmospheric and percussive affair that blends the big room bounce of tech-house with the quietly evocative chords and tear-jerking melodies of gentler deep house. It feels rather tribal, all told, though arguably in outlook rather than the way it sounds. Flipside "Rainfall" is similarly tech-tinged in design, but a whole lot dreamier and deeper. It's melodies, in particular, are luscious, lending the whole thing a blissful, eyes-closed vibe.

Review: Moscow-based deep techno artist Toki Fuko arrives on Russian label Luck of Access with three cerebral tracks forming his glittering new EP, 'Sanctum'. Starting with the expanding and contracting spaciousness of the title track, 'Sanctum', Korotaev allows space for reverberating synthlines to extend outwards, skittering into the distance across the pulsating core of the track, exploring a reflective space that feels at once private and collective. For the second side, everything slows down to a patient, meditative pace. Luxuriating in a moment of slowed breathing, 'Draft' unfolds in a series of exhaling atmospheres, delicately punctuated with strokes of light, glistening on the surface of a rippling body of water. The final track, 'Drift', moves downstream, driven by a winding ambience and decorated with flurries of unravelling organic percussion. At the heart of each of these tracks is a force that feels eternal, held in undulating patterns that continue long beyond their end.

Review: Aniara is a label that ostensibly deals in deep house but you will never hear a standard tune on any of their releases. There is always an innovative sense of melody or intriguing balance between drive and emotion in everything they put out. Next to prove that point is Chefone with Storm. The title track opens up with a dubbed-out cut that is backed by the celestial glow of an angelic pad. Glistening shards of light also puncture the groove to make for something delightfully unusual. 'Hondo' takes up the whole of the flip with a heavy but mid-tempo deep house rhythm embellished with wispy pads and flickering static.

Review: Dubtil has only very recently launched his own superb new label Infrequent. He did so with a top new EP but has clearly been hard at work in the studio because this outing on Ruere is another doozy. It comes on nice spattered vinyl and has four untitled tunes. The first is a warm one with pads swirling round to bring colour to the tech beats, then the second has a more urgent mission through the cosmos with its wispy pads and tight, twanging bass and prickly drums. On the flip is the more stripped back and minimal roller of track three and then the compelling rubbery rhythms and futuristic pad work of the final cut.

Review: Subset's minimal, break-heavy sound is perfect for those who like the subtle joys of electronic music. The always textural sounds here are long form and ever-evolving, with glitchy hits and dubbed out drums providing the details that hook you in and slowly trip you out. 'Ghost Dub' is the sort of thing Steve O'Sullivan excels at, 'Dub Folie' brings some nice Afro-rhythms to the EP and the two 'Drummerz' tunes are brilliantly airy, light, live drum excursions that head off into the cosmos. There's huge variation on this EP which makes it a more that useful tool for the box.

Review: Greyscale use the end of 2022 to look back at what they have achieved so far. And that's a lot as this third volume of their already much-loved Mood Series proves once more. This one focuses on releases #41 to #60 and features the label owner grad_u making the selections. Top ones they are too, with Conor OG's deliciously deep 'Disembarking' setting a nice dub mood before there are excursions into frosty minimalism from Francisco Aguado, sub-aquatic bass bliss from Stoll hypnotic horizontal rhythms from BT Gate X-138, amongst many more standouts. 2022 was a fine year, then, and we're already looking forward to what 2023 has in store for us.

Review: The Suara label is well known for being run by Coyu, a guy who really loves cats. Musically, he started out loving house, then tech, and now gets his thrills from techno if this new EP is anything to go by. It's a selection of remixes of 'Sunshine' and first up is the top tier duo of SHDW & Obscure Shape who go for the jugular with a hard hitting version, firing synths flashing for the metallic drum loops and a rising sense of melodic tension. The boss then brings a more textured and bulky remix which has some nice tripped out melodies and on the flip is a driving Funk Assault remix and whistle blowing 90s revival sound from Marlon Hoffstadt aka DJ Daddy Trance.

Review: Leading Romanian minimal proponent Dubtil is packed with some literally and metaphorically heavyweight wax via the Playedby label out of his homeland. 'I' kicks off with lush under-lapping grooves and silky pads that mesh perfectly with the lithe bass. It's loose body music followed by 'II', a darker cut with snaking and paranoid bass and crispy hits pinging off the groove. 'III' brings more layers of symphonic sound over tight, pinging kicks that meander onwards and sink you into a meditative state. 'IV' closes out with a more sparse and eerie vibe, occasional hits and lazy dub vibes that cast your mind free.

'Precious Little Diamond' kicks the record off in a steady-cruising form, guided by a smooth minimal tech house beat as the engine for some choice dub techno chords and mechanical hiccups. Review: Dubatech lives up to his name with some, well, dubby tech here on the Ranges label. 'Form & Functions' is an EP that balances those things perfectly. 'Straight Ahead' is a frosted dub techno roller with plenty of bounce. The synths are perfectly tweaked, the drums smooth and frictionless and the vibes heady but dynamic. 'Istanbul Latenight' is a more driving cut with a quicker pace but no less depth and 'Sand & Stars' is slowed down, tripped out late night dub for smokers. 'Moonlight Moods' is the more tech-leaning closer but it's another classy tune.

Review: US producer and DJ Sepehr returns with 'Diaspora Cocktail' for Planet Euphorique, breaking from his own imprint Shaytoon for a hair-down foray through cheekier-side of scene-setting techno. The five bits on this new 12" hark back to the titling traditions of the early 90s, with alternate mixes with denominations like 'XTC Mix' and 'Freak Beat Mix' stealing the show. Review: PRSPCTV aka XENTRIX is an emerging Belgian techno talent who steps out here with his first release on Musik is Egall. His moody and atmospheric original 'Perspective & Surface' is found on the B-side. It's a hunched-over, stripped-back deep techno and dub fusion with grotty synths and vast incendiary hi-hats hurrying you along. Label co-founder Oliver Hess steps up with his own remix on the A-side and flips the track into something as deep as they come, with dubbed out chords and warm, edgeless but driving kicks and smeared pads all laced up with muffled vocal mutterings and rising synths. It's one for early-evening groove sessions or late-night zone outs.

Review: Irish artist Outlier is in fine form here as he sets out n a mission to explore a panoply of genres in a new double 12" for Appian Sounds. Alaya is an immediately immersive listen from the first moment the first pads of 'Suspend' smear out around you. There is a deftness to the barely there dub rhythms of 'Moabit, 022017' which means the track plays out like a half remembered dream and 'Worshipper' is suspensory ambient with only the lightest cosmic signifiers for company. That reserved and tender artistry continues even on more beat driven cuts like the gorgeous 'Svagatam'.

Review: Oceanic Zones is a brand new album on a brand new label. CCO is the artist and the fledgling label is Silum which is brought to us from the Liechtenstein Alps via Zurich. This is a stylish electro outing with elastic chords and silky pads that all, we are told, explore 'the layers of the sea.' The A-side is the more cheerful and represents the light-flowed upper regions of the ocean while the flip side is where things get darker and more menacing, as you would expect as you head down to the ocean floor.

Review: Berlin-based Bright Sounds is a prime example of quality over quantity, dropping its first release in a year and making it count by inviting the mighty Skudge on board. If the Swedish techno project has always marked itself with an affinity for the instinctive groove of house, this record goes further into that idea with tracks which could easily slot into a rolling tech house session as much as a funked up techno warm-up. 'Tension' capitalises on off beat dub techno chords as the magic ingredient for a flawless, looped up trip. 'Basement' is a deeper affair, but no less focused on the subtle swing on the drums as a framework for those metallic synth strokes. 'Rounds' on the B-side is a more swirling affair which gets honed into a sleeker chassis for the attendant 'Dub' version.

Review: Following his recent impressive release for Animals On Psychedelics,2 is the second appearance of rising Ukrainian talent Volodymyr Gnatenko on Treviso, Italy's Where We Met. Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: Roger Gerressen is one of those artists, along with the likes of Plastikman and Maurizo, say, who can craft a loop so perfect that it's almost enough to just let it play for days. Here he works with Jonah on a new one for Muted Noise that finds him layer up more fulsome arrangements, at least to start with on the pained 'The Come Down' with its nagging vocal coos and melancholic chords. A Halo Varga remix is more driving and club ready tech, then 'Be Who You Want' is a delightfully deep, delicate and dubbed-out house cut with silky vocals and pillowy chords. Ion Ludwig Think You're Free remix again ups the pace and makes the original a more deriving tech cut.

Review: Vade Mecum welcomes Soft Traffic for a debut release here and it is one that suggests the producer has a soft spot for the warm, deep and heady end of the dubbed out techno spectrum. Those are certainly all the words you would use to describe the quiet brilliance of opener 'Find Ya' (feat Prince Morella) which is icy cool and hypnotic. Review: There's a high-concept story attached to the TerraFirm label that is intriguingly well formed and thorough. It goes like this: "TerraFirm provides the desiccated, toxified, irradiated or otherwise uninhabitable planets of this sector with a suite of services to rectify any environmental challenge." Taking the reins for the seventh outing is Spandrel who serves up bendy, rubbery, body-popping house-cum-techno. 'Floaterz' is a deep cruiser, and so is 'Night Winds Eternal' but with trippy melodies. On the flipside, 'Ornithological Studies' gets more bristly in its cosmic excursions and last of all is the superbly hooky and loopy dub tech roller 'Colonizer Appreciation Day.'

Review: Robot Says A is a stunning EP that showcases the dub techno skills of Jukka Hanninen aka TM Shuffle, a Finnish producer who has been making waves in the scene since 2012. The four tracks on this vinyl are all deep and atmospheric, with lush pads, subtle melodies and crisp rhythms. 'Moonset' is a dreamy and hypnotic track with a soothing vocal sample and a warm bassline, followed by the more upbeat Infinity' an energetic track with a catchy synth hook and a driving groove. Over on the flip, 'Kupliva' is a collaboration with another Finnish dub techno artist, Monoder, and it features a swirling and spacey sound with some glitchy effects. Finally, 'Echo' is a minimal and dubby track with a sparse and haunting vibe.

Review: The seventh release of Sasaki Hiroaki's Yotsume-Music sees Hisashi Ito aka Hulot (Raum...musik, BELOW, FROGMAN/U.S.B.) welcomed to the fray, quite possible, given the EP's title, taking influences from Mr Hulot, the hero of Jacques Tati classic film 1953 'Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot'. Like said hero, there's a kooky, loveable eccentricity to his two productions - he counts Herbert and Moritz von Oswald among his main influences - with Tom Ellis Remix and Sasaki Hiroaki Remix adding a remix, one on either each side.

Review: Jorge Caiado takes charge of the tenth EP from Carpet & Snares with his tropically stylish mix of acid, techno and house. 'Wild Card' is first up with warped 303 lines undulating above an elastic bassline and amidst clattering perc. 'Life's Too Short' ups the pace a little with fresh house sound that has buffed metal chords and smeared pads over leggy beats. Things then take a turn to afterparty territory with 'Freak Not Freak' which is more late night and weird, and 'Wrong Mindset' then flips the vibe once more with its smeared dub chords and reverb-rich deep house drums.

It finds Slam Mode serve up four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work to expand your mind. Featuring staples in the San Franciscan's discography such as 'Box Selection' and 'W-Shape', which sees an exclusive remix in 'W-Shape revisited'. The result is a futuristic techno-house marvel, with it's minimal (occasionally ambient) tone, the composition is analytical in its construction. Each beat feels perfectly placed as dictated by a formula, a chemical blend of glitch, techno, and ambient house. This record is a must for fans of the 90s techno scene, especially in Detroit where you can hear the influences that those artists had on these tracks.

Review: Just a week after dropping its first release - a fine reissue of a 1993 techno classic - VIL is back with another superb EP. Pop Panic's People on Earth is an experimental and leftfield take on techno with freewheeling rhythms built from strange sound sources. The Sound Down version of the title track is all silvery synths and loopy tech drums with twanging metal lines and snaking dub bass.
