Top Of My List (4:11)
Top Of My List (dub) (4:12)
Review: Soul Sugar's signature, fruitful blend of reggae and soul once more oozes forth with 'Top Of My List'. Featuring the vocals of Shniece McMenamin, the track is a liquefyingly dreamy song, unhesitatingly letting in the sunny rays of rocksteady through the Venetians. But in contrast to the mood, it also tells the dubious story of our protagonist placing their self-respect and self-love in the hands of a former lover, with social-fabric-tearing consequences, a funk from which McMenamin sings to help pick up the pieces. The dub version helps; it's a refractive and soft version, emphasising more atmosphere than hardness or forward propulsion.

Let Your Feelings Go

Let Your Feelings Go (3:07)
Review: Not to be confused with the independent funk and soul exhumers Strut Records, who were acquired by the !K7 monopoly in 2008, Strut Records (here recorded as Strutt) was a short-lived North Carolinian, now apparently resurrected, record label active in the early 1970s and exclusively dedicated to the work of the band the Soulfull Strutters. The Fayetteville octet drove a rousing bargain with the soul stomper 'Let Your Feelings Go', indeed seeming to incite the mass-reflexive impulse buy (and with no remorse) by entreating the listener to abandon all emotional valence and make a kind of Kierkegaardian leap of faith - not only into the void of love, but into a commitment to dancing and dancing well, as well as into copping the record. Clever.

Soul Avenue (4:49)
Soul Avenue (Rob Hardt Boogie remix) (4:46)
Review: Soul Kitchen Cookin Crew delivers a blend of smooth, soulful grooves and infectious energy on Soul Avenue. The opening track sets the tone with a deep, warm bassline and crisp drums, immediately drawing you in. 'Midnight Soul' weaves together jazzy melodies with rhythmic precision, while 'Street Lights' carries a mellow yet uplifting vibe, bringing together lush instrumentation and slick, laid-back vocals. The group's ability to balance classic soul influences with modern production shines through, particularly on 'Urban Rhythm,' where funk-driven basslines complement tight percussion. Each track offers something different, but the cohesive sound ties it all together, making this a record that's both refreshing and timeless.

Vibration (SOS Vibe mix) (3:47)
Review: Izipho Soul once again link up with Sound of Superbad here on a super smooth and seductive funk 7". This one raises the bar even in comparison to the super nice 'I Want Cha' last time out. Chicago-based singer extraordinaire Robert IMtume Owens is the man who offers up his beautifully buttery tones, which are layered over nice classy drums and warm synths, with trumpets and strings all adding ear golden texture. The 'S.O.S. Vibe Mix' on the flip is a heavier jam thanks to the more direct percussion, but with everything else also turned up it's still a super lush tune with those vocals doing plenty of great work.

Southside Movement - "I'm So Glad That I've Got You" (3:28)
Review: In the early 80s, Chicago-based funk band Southside Movement teamed up with soul singer Jackie Ross who was already well known for her work with Chess and Brunswick. Though this collaboration produced incredible music, it was largely forgotten since only a few test pressings existed so it never spread too far. However, in 2023, P-VINE reissued their only full-length album on vinyl for the first time and now, the standout track from their partnership, 'You Are The One That I Need' comes on its own special 7" which is the first time it has been available in this format. It's a wonderful and previously long-lost collaboration that is well deserving of your attention.

Review: DC based imprint Peoples Potential Unlimited have really cornered the market in highly collectable reissued boogie funk rarities in 2010 and end the year on a high note with the three vocal cuts lifted from Real Love, a mid 80s mini album from Michael Soward that mixes new gospel dynamics and heavy synthesiser funk. Dam Funk fans will delight in the vintage sounds spread across this dinky 45 with the dusted groove of "He's Alive" particularly impressive.

Coffee (instrumental) (3:36)
Review: The second analog release from the Japanese hip-hop label Warufuzake, 'Coffee' hears the amusingly-named Soy Ayers helm up production and rap duties for a new release on 7" wax. The track is a playful b-boy-breaksy hip-hop cut that regales the story of men seducing the objects of their affections with euphemistic 'coffee'. Exquisitely illustrated and obi-stripped, we can't wait to hear more from this new venture and wisecracking moniker.

Tenorio (1:46)
Review: If you can't make it to the Kazakh steppe to watch the launch of the actual Soyuz spacecraft, the next best thing is to immerse yourself in this spacey, dreamy, blissed out psychedelic instrumental music with a 70s AOR touch and send your imagination on a voyage. Minsk collective Soyuz have some seriously strong musical chops and subsequently can bring in guest appearances from the sensational Biel Basile of the rising Brazilian group Sessa and Anthony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi, Astronauts, Etc.). They fit into the mixes beautifully, sounding like they've been part of the group their whole lives. It's a real gem of a release and a likely future collectible 7" from the Brighton-based independent label Mr Bongo.

Little Bit Of Love (3:56)
Relax Your Mind (4:19)
Review: Sultry street soul/R&B from two otherworldly underground names, intro'ing Vol. 1 of their 'Grown and Sexy Music' series. Sudi 'Space Ghost' Wachspress handles the production on these three swaying, sex-soul tidbits, while Teddy Bryant aka. Urbyne tops things off, adding melismatic croons to the affair. A-sider 'Heaven Sent' is a glistening, ecstatic exercise in digi-R&B moods, as Bryant sings of excited imaginations and loving fantasies. 'Little Bit Of Love' spices things up to a boom-bap flavour, with thoughts of neediness prevailing - of course, they just "need a little bit of your drug". 'Relax Your Mind', finally, ushers in a safe space / comedown after the high.

Spirit Beat (5:17)
Review: As far as contemporary drummers go, Richard Spaven is one of the most sought-after. He is master of progressive and contemporary sounds who has played with all the greats such as Jose James, Gregory Porter, Flying Lotus and The Cinematic Orchestra. He got sit alone here on this new 7" for Fine Line. Opener 'Hoodie Beats' shows off his considerable skills with an airy, floaty grove that is like live and deep drum & bass, then neo-soul vocalists Jordan Rakei joins for the superb 'Nova.'
Barney Artist drops some verses on 'Icarus '88' to bring a real edge and the title track closes in seductive fashion with lingering chords melting your heart.

Review: Spice does everything from buttery sweet soul to disco that makes you want to move. They are a firm favourite with those cultured crate diggers and their Let There Be Spice album is about as good as it gets. This fresh 7" from P-Vine features two of the standout tracks. First up is 'The Last Time' with some expertly penned choruses and a vocal turn that will have your mouth open in awe. Flip it over and the quality does not drop - "I'm So Glad To Say' is a high watermark for modern soul with staccato guitars over a persuasive bassline and gentle drums to make for a perfect captivating and mellow groove. What More Could A Boy Ask For (3:05)
Review: The Spinners' Motown debut single 'Sweet Thing' was a thrilling yet uneven mix featuring a multitude of ideas with some inspired moments. However, the follow-up 'I'll Always Love You' was a faultless return with a soaring, emphatic chorus that many groups dream of and one that perfectly, exemplifies the Spinners' best Motown tracks. This captivating chorus bursts forth amidst a flurry of horns and backing vocals and feels almost like it's from another song. The abrupt time signature change and staccato beat cleverly elevate the experience and on the flip of this pressing of it is the equally effective 'What More Could A Boy Ask For'.

Spirit (Zaf & Phil Asher edit) (11:35)
Review: Spirit's impossible-to-find 1979 debut album "Put Your Hands Together" has long been a favourite of those dusty-fingered crate diggers who love gospel soul, funk and disco. Here Rain & Shine offer a chance to own the album's standout moment, 12 minute opener "Spirit", for a fraction of the cost of the album. It's an absolute stunner - a busy, energetic gospel-soul/gospel-disco hybrid that simply increases in intensity throughout (with no small thanks to some killer organ solos). Turn to the flip and you'll find the added bonus of Phil Asher and The Mighty Zaf's punchy re-edit, which not only re-arranges the track for maximum dancefloor impact, but also plays around with the EQs to produce a weightier low-end sound.

Review: Colemine Records has devoted itself to releasing top notch soul music for close to 20 years now. Those who follow the label closely trust the purveyor of the label (Terry Cole) enough to blindly pick up each and almost every release. The label's knack for finding and sharing some of the best versions of soul music is clearly evident from the latest by a group called The Splendids. Originally recorded in 1961, these two songs were destined to launch this talented ensemble. Two things' happened in 1962 though. Beatles music made Doo-Wop almost irrelevant overnight. In addition, members of the group got called into Vietnam. 63 years later after originally forming, the surviving three of the five members recording once again. The result is phenomenal and makes us feel like we are back in the 1950s. Only 500 copies in total have been pressed.

Review: Split Decision Band dropped this pearler back in 2018. They hail from Des Moines, Iowa, and are well known to hardcore diggers who cost some of their 70s soul gems. This is another one of them with a laissez-faire vocal backed with warming chords and twirling chords that really dazzle. On the flipside tune 'Say Woman', a deeper male voice takes over the singing duties and delivers a fine turn that is utterly seductive. Some call and response with another female comes in later and the funky bass and deep cut drums are just perfect.

Review: After a sterling run of 7" soul cuts last year, Cannonball get straight back to it with this supremely rare slice from Split Evolution. The Chicago group had some hits in the late 70s and early 80s, but this one slipped through the cracks. Dave Morley from Tesla Groove Records procured a test pressing of this original which had never enjoyed a wider release until now, as sister label Cannonball presses it up for widespread enjoyment. It's a powerful, beautifully rendered slice of soul from the easy-tempo funk of 'Bedroom Eyes' to pitch-perfect B-side 'Let Me Do It', and the ever-devoted soul community will be quick to snap this one up for sure.

Lisa Stansfield - "Eight Three One" (4:28)
Gloria Gaynor - "This Love Affair" (4:11)
Review: Cute 7" here featuring two very different but equally fantastic soul sounds. Lisa Stansfield's 'Eight Three One' is a sleek outing full of her signature smooth vocals over a gentle but compelling groove. It embodies an effortless mix of pop and r&b while Stansfield's rich tone elevates it to another level. On the flip side, Gloria Gaynor's 'This Love Affair' brings the energy with her famously powerful delivery and disco-infused sound making this one a real dance anthem. Its combination of catchy melodies with a heartfelt narrative of love and longing means it delivers on more levels than one and together, both tunes offer a fine balance of danceability and emotional depth.

I Can't Stop Being Your Fool (2:37)
You Bet Your Sweet Sweet Love (4:40)
Review: One of two new Soul4Real 45s releases, Candi Staton's 'I Can't Stop Being Your Fool' is a candid expression of heartsickness and toxic attachment. The Alabaman southern soul laid these two recordings bare at least 20 years into her towering career, in which time Staton had embarked on a new career leg at Warner Bros. Never paired before, 'I Can't Stop...' and 'You Bet Your Sweet, Sweet Love' share in similar themes, confounding the listener in projective throes of uncertainty, over such topics as whether the thrill of love might be worth it despite fraught or downright abusive downturns; Staton's lyrics are tired, grief-stricken and persevering, though the background instrumentation is always jolly, suggesting either an eerie facade, or a romanticised, brunt-borne happiness.

Review: The wonderful and now reissued 'Bi Centennial 1976' by Frankie Staton & Speckled Rainbow encapsulates the essence of a pivotal moment in American history. Released during the nation's bicentennial celebration, the track embodies the spirit of unity and pride, blending elements of folk, rock and Americana in the process. With heartfelt lyrics and soaring melodies, it serves as both a tribute to the past and a reflection of the hope and promise of the future. Feelin' It (alternative version) (2:20)
Review: Record Shack unearth two tunes from the vaults of Austrian public broadcasting institution ORF, available for the very first time on officially released 7" record. Pressed using only the strictest high-grade equipment, the flame of soul soprano Stefanie Vhynak's 'Feelin' It' is rekindled with a rejuvenative flair: the Viennese singer cut her teeth in the USA before her return to her birthplace, where she was discovered and subsequently enjoyed a longstanding career. Though her stint with the Austrian Broadcasting Company was short-lived, it could still be argued that Stefanie's rep of contributions to the broadcaster lie among her best. The exigency of radio is paramount to good songcraft, which is why there are two versions of 'Feelin' It' here; the first of which lays down the centrality of the song's lyrics via pared-backbeat and muted funk, and the latter pulling the pull ring on the sonic grenade, allowing a full-throttle vocal and instrumental amour to explode.

Review: Early arrivals at Stone Foundation's intimate gig are greeted with oversized cardboard masks of frontman Neil Jones, setting a playful tone for the evening. As the venue fills, a palpable buzz builds among the devoted fans packed into the steamy room. The band's latest offering, their first new material in over a year, hints at exciting new directions for the UK soul stalwarts. This double A-side single whets appetites for their 11th studio album, due in 2025. Stone Foundation's signature sound evolves here, incorporating fresh influences while maintaining their soulful core. 'Fix You Up' rides a propulsive groove, its urgent rhythm section driving forward as layers of brass and keys build to euphoric heights. Jones' impassioned vocals soar over the mix, his lyrics touching on themes of resilience and redemption. The addition of Mick Talbot's distinctive keyboard work adds a new dimension, his deft touches elevating both tracks. 'Everything and All I Want' takes a more introspective turn, its shimmering arrangement recalling classic 70s soul ballads while feeling thoroughly modern. As the set progresses, the new material sits comfortably alongside fan favourites, demonstrating Stone Foundation's knack for crafting timeless soul music. The limited pressing of 500 copies ensures this release will quickly become a coveted item for collectors. It's a fitting testament to a band continuing to evolve and excite after over a decade in the game, bridging their past work with whatever they're cooking up next.

Cat: TP 706. Rel: 15 Sep 20
Dancing (4:11)
The Two Of Us (4:40)
Running (4:18)
Review: This rather rare and emotionally raw disco bomb from Jackie Stoudemire & Al Stewart landed back in 1998 and often fetches upwards of L300, if you can find it. It now gets a full remaster and is presented with replica artwork for Record Store Day 2020. Opening salvo 'Dancing' is an uplifting jam with laid bare vocals soaring over a tight, kinetic rhythm section. After the dancing thrills of that one, 'The Two Of Us' is a more sentimental slow dance for lazy Sundays, and 'Running' closes out the triptych somewhere in between, with soaring strings and life-affirming Rhodes riffs.

I Hate To Do My Woman Wrong (3:17)
Review: Barbados-born Richard Stoute set out on his 60-year long musical career at the age of just 12. He put out only one album in that time back in 1974 and some superb singles. This new 7" from Wirl - his original label - features two of them with 'Vehicle' the most well-known. It is Caribbean funk with expressive horns and his seductive vocals front and centre. It's become an expensive grail these days for good reason. 'I Hate To Do This Woman Wrong' on the flip is a much more slow and more sentimental number with deeply romantic grooves and heartfelt vocal tones from Stoute.

Wild Woman (3:38)
Review: R. Ackley is the man behind this particular Status project - there are many others in various genres - and he is credited with just one release - 1977's Girl, which has become a cult classic in the world of funk and soul. It was written alongside C. Barton and is a glorious bit of lavish and immersive soul with a tricky rhythm section firing out minimal but punch rhythms under the AOR-style vocals. It's cosmic and Beatrice and perfect for so many settings. On the flip is 'Wild Woman' written with S. Bourne and it is another heater well worth having, especially as an original of this will cost you well over 300 quid.

Steps On A Cloud (4:14)
Whispering (5:18)
Review: German label Tramp continues pack a serious punch when it comes to funk with this newest 7". It is a standalone pressing of two superb cuts from the fourth volume in the Can You Feel It compilation series. Up first is the super cool funk of 'Steps On A Cloud' with its dynamic drums and indie male vocal all back with some neat and funky guitar lines and almost prog style guitar freestyles. On the B-side you will find 'Whispering' which has not yet been re-issued so makes an exclusive appearance here.
