Tell Me Baby
Cat: ATH 088. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Tell Me Baby (3:54)
  2. I Remember (4:01)
Review: Back in June, a copy of Akira Freeze's hitherto unknown single 'Tell Me Baby' appeared on an online auction site and ended up selling for well over $2,000. It sparked Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer into action, as he tracked down the rights to the record in order to reissue it. Little information exists about the record, but we can confirm that it is utterly beguiling. A-side 'Tell Me Baby' is superb, with slick, soulful lead vocals rising above squelchy synth-bass, spacey chords, luscious electronic melodies, twinkling keyboard solos and unfussy drums. Flipside 'I Remember', an even more intergalactic-sounding affair, is arguably even better, making this a very desirable 45.

  2. Paradise Island (Revisited) (6:22)
  3. Fair Weather Friend (3:04)
Review: You'll struggle to find many cosmic boogie/jazz-funk records rarer than Azwon's 1980 debut single, a private press gem from Florida that has long been in demand amongst collectors. Here the finest track from that double A-side seven-inch, "Paradise Island", is given the reissue treatment. It's worth picking up, not only for the swirling, spaced-out brilliance of the original version of "Paradise Island", but also the slightly bolder, Latin-tinged "Revisited" version the band re-recorded last year for this very release. The production is very similar, sound wise, meaning it's every bit as spaced out as the cut they made 40 years ago. Bonus cut "Fair Weather Friend", a dancefloor-focused jazz-funk workout recorded but not released in 1980, is also rather good.

  1. Yvonne Baker - "You Didn't Say A Word" (2:40)
  2. Hattie Winston - "Pictures Don't Lie" (2:34)
Review: Outta Sight's latest limited-edition, red vinyl reissue brings together two rare, sought-after soul classics. Up first on side A is sometime Sensations member Yvonne Baker's 'You Didn't Say a Word', a stomping and soaring 1967 cut that sounds like it was a little influenced by the soundtracks to British spy movies of the swinging sixties. Original copies of the single regularly change hands for four-figure sums, so its appearance on this seven-inch is certainly welcome. Hattie Winston's 'Pictures Don't Lie' is arguably even rarer, with the Ronettes' style number - the production apes Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' approach - originally appearing on a promo-only "45" in the mid-1960s.

  1. Take Me With You (3:25)
  2. Take Me With You (version) (3:30)
Review: With sunshine becoming a regular occurrence again just in time for summer, two of France's more soulful producers have decided to join forces and offer up something suitably warm and relaxing. With the assistance of vocalist Kahina Ouali, Blundetto and Booker Gee have recorded a killer, Hammond-laden version of Lyn Christopher classic "Take Me With You" that sits somewhere between the organs-and-lo-fi-drum machines flex of Timmy Thomas' "We Can't We Live Together" and the soulful reggae grooves of 1980s lovers rock. The fine A-side original mix, which boasts Ouali's full vocal, is our pick of the pair, though the flipside instrumental "Version" mix, in which Booker Gee gets busy on the organ, is also superb.

Dreamworld Fantasies

  2. Stay Off The Moon (2:33)
Review: Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met in 1971 in south central LA and shared the same flat as jazz man Doug Carn and Brownstone vocalist Billy Wilson. They often played together and some of the sessions gave rise to the two hard to find tracks offered up here. 'Dreamworld Fantasie' is a first release of an unissued 1977 disco and soul gem that muses on how we'd all like our lives to be - and right now such escapist vibes have never been more in need. Flip it over and you'll find a rare though previously released 1971 single 'Stay Off The moon', which delivers a poignant political message that resonates to this day.

  1. Luther 2 (Caserta & The Gang mix) (5:25)
  2. Luther 2 (Caserta & Natasha Diggs Incense dub) (5:32)
Review: Last year Caserta and friends had their wicked way with a classic Luther Vandross acapella, brilliant re-framing the soul maestro in a late 1980s NYC club style. A year on they're at it again on 'Luther 2', which naturally repurposes another superb performance from the legendary vocalist. On the A-side, Vandross's vocal rides a smooth revivalist disco groove created by an all-star cast including Serge Gamesbourg (bass) and Natasha Diggs (piano, Fender Rhodes). It's a genuinely impressive revision that sounds like it could have been recorded sometime in the early 1980s (despite being made during lockdown). Diggs plays an even bigger role on the flip, a hazy and groovy deep house version in which she adds her own sassy spoken word vocals in reaction to the Vandross acapella.

  4. The Gospelaires Of Dayton, O - "God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" (JC edits & Overdubs instrumental) (6:49)
Review: No one works a mixing board quite like Joe Clasusell, and his latest project is another high water mark in a career full of them: his Claussell Edits & Overdubs version of Crowns of Glory's 'Lord Look at Your People' is getting put out on a series of 12"s, with this third one being another winner. Bishop Jeff Banks & The Revival Temple Mass Choir offer up two versions of 'Jerusalem' on the a-side, and the reverse is 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves' by The Gospelaires Of Dayton, O. Both are intense, emotive, life affirming affairs to bring joy to any dance floor.

  1. Home Is Where The Edit Is (4:03)
  2. Home Is Where The Dub Is (4:03)
Review: It is undervalued soul singer Esther Phillips's cover version of Gil Scott's Heron's cult classic 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is' that provides the source material for this latest edit from DJ Soopasoul. ON the a-side is a version pretty faithful to the original, only with more bulky drums, drawn out grovers and some extra drum fills for that more suitable dance floor feel. The strings will also soar on the right system. A dub pairs it back slightly to a raw funk groove with plenty of hard blue eyed soul also colouring the mix.

  1. Hard 2 Handle (DJ Suro Refix) (2:29)

Review: Marsh Mellow first put out this tidy funk 7" in 2011 and now reissue 100 copies of it on white vinyl. Side A is DJ Suro a re-work of Patti Drew's 1968 version of 'Hard to Handle' that has big brass sounds, low slung bass and a fine soul vocal scoring to real heights. The flip is a distinctly Latin take on 'Por Eso' that swaggers between wooden hits and Spanish vocals. It's pure sunshine on 7" and though the water might be closing in, this one keeps the good time open air party vibes well and truly alive.

An iconic rare groove gem from the 80s, it has since been sampled any number of times by giants like A Tribe Called Quest. An edited version has been put out before on an Expansion 7" but an extended version has alway been sought after. Well, here it is along with 'Give Me Your Love', a solo tune from Sylvia. 'Sing Me' also makes the cut to ensure this soul gem is an essential pick up.

  1. Set You Free (long version) (11:51)
  2. Mellow (6:08)
  3. Life (4:00)
Review: Earlier in the year, rare and unissued soul specialists Cordial Recordings offered up a fine album of previously unreleased recordings by Family of Swede, an obscure Oakland, California-based band who were briefly active in the mid 1970s. The label has now decided to follow this up by releasing the full, near 12-minute recording of album highlight 'Set Me Free', a deliciously spacey, slow-motion cosmic soul number that sounds like a Californian stoner's take on some of Cymande's most laidback and intergalactic work. It's rather brilliant all told, as is flipside opener 'Mellow', a synth-laden trip through up-tempo space-funk territory that's as infectious as Covid 19 at a student house party. 'Life', a funky slab of blue-eyed soul brilliance, completes a must-have EP.

Review: Brooklyn-based, Baltimore-raised musician Aaron Frazer has a distinctive falsetto voice that is best known as part of soul mainstays Durand Jones & The Indications. He also got plenty of love for his gospel inspired project The Flying Stars of Brooklyn, which put out the 'My God Has a Telephone' single in 2017 ad appears on the a-side. He is also a drummer with the band and here Colemine Records celebrate the start of his solo career with a timely reissue of this gorgeous 7" with a new picture sleeve. 1. Out On The Floor (2:00)
  2. The In Crowd (2:53)
Review: Outta Sight has decided to re-release some of its most celebrated reissues on red vinyl "45s". The latest to get this limited-edition treatment is Dobie Gray's 'Out on the Floor', which was first featured on the soundtrack to quirky 1966 beach party/spy spoof movie Out of Sight. It was released as a single, too, and due to its mixture of Mod-style 'beat music' production and stomping soul sounds became popular within the 1970s Northern Soul scene. Here it comes backed by the similarly styled 'The In Crowd', which originally kicked off Gray's awfully-titled 1965 album, Sings For The 'In' Crowders That Go 'Go-Go'.

Review: Miles Away are always on a mission to unearth new old gems. Their tireless work now gives rise to a pair of big hitters from The Grooms, a band who only ever flashed this one single back in the 1970s. It came originally on a little-known label in Norfolk, VA headed up by Noah H. Biggs, called Shiptown, and was during the peak era of Motown, Atlantic and Stax. Thankfully the label boss saw its potential. The super charged 'Slow Down' on the A side is wrought with emotion and on the reverse is a more moody and heartfelt ballad called 'I Deserve A Little Bit More.'

  1. Get On Out There (3:26)
  2. Why (3:51)
Review: Both of these tunes are from the early 80s and are somehow previously unreleased. Jay Stovall played with several bands before finally putting together Machine in 1977 at a time when disco soul and R&B were all in a happy and endless state of cross-pollination. That is embodied in 'Get On Out There', a killer bit of disco with nice raw claps cantering way over a strident beat that comes with a mandatory diva vocal. Flip it over and you'll find a much more sentimental and slow motion mood on 'Why', a rueful and reflection love song riding on lo-fi drums with gloriously soaring vocals.

Review: Those delighted by Tallin's Porridge Bullet great job of documenting the late '80s and early 90s period of Estonian music and eager to learn more of the Eastern European country's music heritage should delve into the discography of Frotee. The label's latest release throws the spotlight on Estonian soul singer Velly Joonas, specifically the covers of European songs she recorded during the 1980s. "Stopp, Seisku Aeg!" (or "Stop! Stall the Time!") is a cover by Joonas of "I See Red" from Frida, with the Estonian providing her own lyrics over backing from amateur group Vstretsa and seems quite faithful to the soft skanking 1982 soul number. Complementing this is a wonderful cover of "Feel like Makin Love" which Frotee suggest was laid down in one hour.

Moses & King Solomon (Record Store Day 2020)
Cat: SK 7188P. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. He's Forever (Amen) (4:50)
  2. He's Coming (4:21)
Review: First issued on Soul Kitchen way back in 1971, the two tracks featured on this single are shrouded in mystery. Both were recorded live - hence the grittiness of the sound - and feature what sound like preachers-turned-singers Solomon and Moses doing their thing over righteous funk and soul backing tracks which were rumoured to have been provided by the Ebony Rhythm Band. A-side 'He's Forever (Amen)' is a largely beat-free soul-jazz soundscape, onto which tweaked bible verses are sung and spoken. It's unusual but excellent all told. Flipside 'He's Coming' is the pick for dancefloor plays. It's a righteous, impassioned rendition of a gospel soul classic in the raucous Midwest funk style. Testify!

  1. (It's A) Rat Race (vocal) (4:19)
  2. (It's A) Rat Race (instrumental) (4:14)
Review: Athens of the North's Euan Fryer is not the only collector and selector who believes that the Leaders' obscenely rare 1971 single '(It's A) Rat Race' should be considered a genuine deep funk classic. In fact, it was deep funk specialist Keb Darge who first brought the record to the attention of DJs and dancers in the UK in the early 2000s. Happily Fryer has tracked down the band and got their permission to reissue their sought-after classic. Formidably funky, the A-side version features fantastic group vocals rising above a bed of hazy horns, bustling drums, warm bass and razor-sharp, Blaxploitation style guitars. The accompanying instrumental take is superb, too, with a variety of woodwind and brass solos - often drenched in reverb - replacing the group's fine vocals.

Review: It was back in 1986 when obscure UK electrofunk band Leval released their sole 7" - a sparkling slab of pop-boogie brilliance that has long been a secret weapon for dusty-fingered diggers and Brit-funk collectors. As this Athens of the North reissue proves, the record remains a brilliant Brit-boogie gem. Check first 'Our Love', a confirmed earworm that sees the band wrap duetting male/female vocals around a deliciously bustling blend of rubbery slap-bass, eyes-closed soft rock guitars, warm synthesizer chords and a dewy-eyed, jazz-funk style breakdown. Flipside 'It's Up To You' is a little more eccentric thanks to an unusual time signature and drum track, but boasts the same addictive blend of male and female lead vocals, slap bass and synths.

Review: MD Records is small indie label who here introduce the debut single from Lost in Rio on their new MD Gold Series. Despite what you might assume form their sound, this band hails from Scotland but is a collective made up of talents from all over the world, which explains their global sound. They are a well known live act on their local circuit and have plenty of fine credits individually. 'Little Piece Of Heaven' is their single here and is s glorious bit of timeless soul that lights up summer parties large and small. The musicianship is second to none and the vocals hit a super sweet spot. Studio84 steps up for a remix that repurposes the track for more club focussed play.

Review: 'Now That I Have You' is simply one of the sweetest and most effortlessly lovely songs in the Tommy McGee canon. The artist himself certainly thought so, because he recorded it a number of times during the 1980s. This essential reissue boasts all of the best versions, starting with the brilliantly produced and performed 1981 original version, which we firmly believe to be one of the greatest cosmic soul tracks of all time. Arguably even better though is the 'Hip-Kik' version from 1986, a jauntier and more rubbery-sounding affair that replaces much of the instrumentation with drum machines and synthesizer sounds. The EP also boasts an instrumental version of this killer re-make nestled on the flip, along with a more laidback 1981 recording, 'Stay With Me'.

Review: Given that the last time this prime slab of Texan funk appeared on wax was way back in 1969, we'd say this special Record Store Day 2020 reissue is long overdue. A-side 'Iron Leg' is a bona-fide bomb: a fuzzy, low-slung, psychedelic-era instrumental funk smasher rich in hazy Hammond stabs, mazy solos, crunchy breakbeats, rising horn riffs and insanely weighty bass. It comes backed with 'Chocolate', a similarly bass-heavy but slightly jazzier instrumental funk workout that's well worth dancefloor spins. Original copies regularly change hands for three figure sums, so copping this essential reissue will save your bank balance (or leave plenty spare to buy other killer funk records!).

Review: This year, a number of labels - most notably Dynamite Cuts - have been digging in to the seemingly bottomless archives of much-sampled American-Trinidadian artist and producer George Semper, a man many consider to be "the Godfather of Bay Area soul". Here Mukatsuku gets in on the act by offering up a fresh pressing of Semper-produced funk band In One Piece's rare, self-titled debut the first time ever on a 45. The vocal version on side A is superb, and features Cindy Jones singing attractively over a bustling, loose-limbed, B-Boy friendly rhythm track and sweaty Hammond B3 solos from jazz organist Rodney Franklin. The latter's mazy, jazzy keys-work naturally comes to the fore on the flipside instrumental, which has never before been heard let alone released until now. A genuine must-have for funk fans and B-Boys searching for drum breaks alike....As played by DJ Koco from Japan...DJ Spinna....DJ Muro...Mr Thing....Rob Life....Rob Manga....The Allergies....Smoove Evil Ed...etc

Groovin'
Groovin' (7")
Cat: FFSPT 1018. Rel: 22 Oct 20
  1. Groovin' (feat Jamie Allensworth) (3:11)
  2. Groovin' (instrumental) (2:57)
Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

Love Will Come
Cat: MD 111. Rel: 09 Nov 20
  1. Love Will Come (2:36)
  2. She's So Confused (2:58)
Review: 20 years ago, the previously unissued 'Love Will Come' was featured on a compilation of Northern Soul style tracks from Philadelphia. Here it finally gets a much-deserved vinyl pressing courtesy of MD Records. It's well worth picking up, because it's a mid-1960s gem that combines a Northern Soul-friendly stomping soul groove with boisterous, celebratory horns and simply superb lead vocals from Patty Russell. Quite why it has never made it onto wax before remains a mystery; either way, we're glad it finally has. Turn to the flip and you'll find a previously unheard treat from the band: an answer record to their successful single 'Mixed Up, Shook Up, Girl' to adds doo-wop style harmony vocals to a handclap-heavy, pop-soul backing track of the sort that was so popular in 1964.

We Got Love
Cat: SHOT 112. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. We Got Love (2:33)
  2. Should I Go Or Should I Stay (2:46)
Review: There was a fantastic documentary on TV this month (October, 2020) about the late great soul singer Teddy Pendergrass. The reception was a collective cry of 'wow, we never knew that' because of how the film detailed Pendergrass's bad car accident and long road to recovery. It left him paraplegic but didn't stop him eventually singing once more. Long story short, he's an underrated icon who doesn't get the headlines of many of his peers. This gorgeous 7" goes some way to rectifying that with the strident funk of 'We Got Love' and more emotional and serene 'Should I Go Or Should I Stay' showing two different but brilliant sides of this essential artist which have never before appeared on vinyl before.

Changing Man (reissue)
Cat: BTOWN 4501. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Changing Man (3:20)
  2. I'm Just Your Clown (4:10)
Review: Brewerytown Beats have got a real gem on their hands here, and one that lovers of rare and high quality funk will be falling over themselves for. Power of Attorney was a rehabilitative project of Theodore "Ted" Wing, activities director at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution, who opened a studio in the prison for inmates to get creative. They originally released this one for Nicetown in 1973 - only 500 were pressed and sold direct from prison - and even Discogs hasn't got any recent sales records for it. The high speed jailbird funk of 'Changing Man' is a tale of redemption and is backed with the achingly soulful 'I'm Just Your Clown'.

Wheels Turning
Cat: TR 729. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Wheels Turning (4:05)
  2. Wheels Turning (instrumental) (4:14)
Review: Over the years Timmion's in-house band, Cold Diamond & Mink, has provided richly funky, soulful and formidably fuzzy musical backing for a dizzying array of American and European vocalists and, on rare occasions, jazz soloists. For their latest venture, the revivalist combo has reunited with "Nordic Americana and neo-folk" twosome Pratt & Moody (Tuomo Prattala and Markus Nordenstreng), for the first time since 2018's Words, Words, Words. As you might expect, 'Wheels Turning' is a heartfelt, slow-motion affair, with the duo's impassioned blue-eyed soul vocals rising above glistening guitars and a relaxed, laidback beat. The beauty of Cold Diamond and Mink's backing track can be savoured in full on the flipside instrumental take.
