Review: Originally released way back in 1982, 35 Years From Alpha is a genuine rarity: a rare solo album from the late, great 'Deadly' Headley Bennett, one of reggae's most prolific saxophonists of the 70s and 80s. The album was produced by Adrian Sherwood, with Bennett being backed by a who's who of fine Jamaican musicians and On-U-Sound regulars. As this timely reissue proves, all involved did a terrific job providing a platform for the talented horns-man. For proof, check the ska-tinged dancefloor dub excellence of '35 Years From Alpha', the rootsy sweetness of 'Head Charge', the soulful dub-jazz weight of 'Little Dove' and the spaced-out, intergalactic dub wonder that is 'Independent Man (Horns Cut)'.

Review: Bob Marley remains a towering figure in world music many years after his death. His work to popularise reggae around the world is never likely to be equalled, which is why we keep on coming back to his grand canon. This label in particular has done a fine job of shining a light on it. After the success of Trenchtown Rock, Small Ax, and All in One, here comes the final chapter of this quadriptych of albums dedicated to Marley's musical legacy. It's a jam-packed collection that mixes up incandescent grooves with universal messages and takes in plenty of his lesser-known jams on a nice acid-yellow vinyl.

Review: Rock A Shaka continue their tributary exegeses of Jamaican rocksteady legend Prince Buster with a new 7", 'Got To Be Free'. Pulled straight from the corresponding Funky Jamaica compilation issued separately - which in turn compiles the best gems to coruscate his illustrious career - the 45s format does well to counterbalance the fallacy of comprehensiveness with a throwback in form. 'Got To Be Free' is a rather pleasant anthem to freedom: "we love the birds, we love the trees, we love the honey, we love the bees..."

Review: The first of a new two-part series by LMLR charting the best of the original wave of rocksteady: that crucial intermediary Jamaican genre, seen on the sonic pedigree chart sometime circa 1966, and hemmed in between the grandmother, ska, and the son, reggae. Eschewing any of the rocksteady's 21st Century manifestations or updates, the two-part series, Ska & Rock Steady Classics From Treasure Isle, hears only the most incipient musical genii in the sound - the likes of Alton Ellis, The Paragons, Don Drummon, The Skatalites and Jackie Mittoo - battle it out for a sound whose provenance is still contested to this day.

Review: The magical 'All in My Life' is an unreleased and heartbroken lovers rock steady track sung by a humble figure over a smooth rhythm. While missing the glamour of a horn section, it's driven by a lilting organ reminiscent of Buster Allstars. The B-side, 'Dancing Floor,' is the only song Gregory Isaacs recorded under Buster's production and so it is a rather rare gem. It features a melancholic melody and Isaacs' signature sweet voice that very much come from the golden age of early reggae. Both tracks showcase a raw side of the genre and as they are lesser known, they are sure to make a big impact whenever played.

Review: Byron Lee was an important part of Jamaican music from his first appearance in the 60s and onwards. Amongst his bustling back catalogue is this cheery classic from 1980, which keeps the heart and soul of ska alive, with an emphasis on the soul. The rhythms are reliably skanking throughout, whether stopping by the melancholic 'Shoobe Doobe Doo' or the chirpy 'Bend Down Low'. This is ska in its truest sense, with an infectious energy which speaks universally to young and old, hip and square. You can also hear the strong US RnB roots of the music in Lee's songwriting, and it tugs at the heart strings in just the same way. Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

Review: The 5th studio album by Jamaican reggae artist Lincoln Thompson released back in 1983, 'Ride With the Rasses' was well-loved by those who knew it. A proud proclamation of his Rastafari faith, Prince Lincoln and his Royal Rasses are considered one of the mainstays of roots reggae. The record is conscious at every turn, influenced by the band's label going bankrupt the year prior forcing their return to Jamaica from the UK (referenced in 'Come Spring', the yearning for hot weather). The tone gambol's from serious messaging on the state of the world at the time, to a relaxed and chill attitude like in 'Ride With The Rasses'. The real attraction in Lincoln's work is his falsetto voice, something that distinguished him from his roots peers Bob Marley and Peter Tosh (the latter of which taught Thompson to play instruments). This is a well-deserved repressing of an incredible piece of underrated roots history.

Review: Flower Records fusion masters Masato Komatsu and Ryo Kawahara are Slowly and are adept at everything from dub to disco, soul to post-rock. They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' It is a lush bit of slow motion big beat and dub, with heavily treated Japanese language vocals over a fat, churning rhythm. An instrumental is also included on this crucial 7".

Review: With a storied history stretching right back to the mid-1990s, Reggae Disco Rockers are one of Japan's longest-serving reggae and rocksteady bands. While they're best-known for their original songs, they've delivered some killer cover versions over the years - including 2021's sun-splashed reggae re-imagining of Frankie Knuckles' classic house track 'The Whistle Song'. This seven-inch features another: the band's immersive, loved-up, super-sweet lover's rock-meets-Balearic reggae take on Neil Young classic 'Harvest Moon', featuring some suitably weary, emotive lead vocals from Marter. Flower Records regulars Slowly provide a dreamy and dubbed out take on the flip, as you'd expect given their output in recent times.

Review: The Skatalites' incendiary ska bombshell, Ska-Boo-Da-Da, first surfaced after the Chinese-Jamaican record producer Philip Stanford 'Justin' Yap first clocked onto the genre's earliest burblings. After hearing word of his rival Clement Dodd's receipt of hundreds of ska demo in mid-1964, Yap saw dollar signs at such a critical juncture, and unhesitatingly pulled his pre-rigged strings to gather of the cream of his session talents (not yet quite collectively crowned the Skatalites) for a mammoth all-night session in 1964 at Dodd's Studio One on Brentford Road. Successfully occupying the studio of his competitor, the culture cow that was to become the Skatalites thus further came into being. The November session lasted 18 hours, and was described as a monster - so riveting, in fact, that it compelled the studio to double the usual going rate for the instrumentalists. Though many of its demo takes still languish in the vaults, the Skatalites' second-ever LP amounts to a well-chosen curation of cover versions (Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington originals included) first laid down on that fateful, deal-sealing day.

Review: Reggae Disco Rockers are Japan's leading reggae and lover's rock band. They have been active since they dropped their first ever single way back in 1996 and since then they have put a steady stream of sounds including six full albums and many more singles. This one is a cover of an absolute soul classic. 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' here becomes a slow, weighty dub with splashy cymbals, nice incidental melodies and a re-sung vocal that conveys the same emotions. Flip it over for a more steamy, sax-laced Silent Dream version.

Review: Hiroshi II Hiroshi was a one-off project from Hiroshi Fujiwara and Hiroshi Kawanbe which came out on File Records in 1993. It's a flawless gem of island boogie smoothed out to a gentle lull, buffeted along by breezy guitar licks and mellow Rhodes, quite happily reclining on a melodious phrase or two for as long as necessary to ensure ultimate relaxation. 'H2O' in particular is a float-adrift masterpiece, while 'Beauty & Beast + Bagel (Dub)' teases a little intrigue in amidst the placid waters without kicking up a fuss. Now it's being repressed on appropriately clear blue vinyl, bringing a perfect nugget of chill-out charm within reach for all your lounging, poolside or hammock-based needs.
