Review: Gbefabi was recorded on a hot night in a gospel music studio in Accra's New Town district. Ghanaian trombonist Elikplim Kofi and American guitarist Nathaniel Braddock, who first met in 2017, reunited and were joined by percussionists Nii Addotey Brown and Daniel Tettey Black for these sessions which blend traditional and avant-garde sounds while merging folkloric instruments with free improvisation. The music is influenced by Ghana's diverse modern soundscapes so feels both local and cosmopolitan. The musicians' diverse backgrounds bring a rare, spiritual energy to this most standout record.

Review: You have a genuine piece of musical history here. The Anchors may not be remembered by many, but made a significant impact on everyone who does. Black Soul is the third and - to all musicologist knowledge - last record put out by this pioneering South African funk-soul outfit. Straight out of the Johannesburg township of Alexandria at the height of Apartheid, they became known for exceptional musicianship and reinterpreting the classic Memphis, USA sound for their own oppressed community. Part three of that legacy takes things much, much further, though. So, we can definitely still hear those Mid South sounds that represent the very essence of soul, but here the aesthetic becomes something altogether different, Afro and specific to time and place. Homage paid to the genre founders, but drawing on personal circumstances to own things for themselves.

Review: Sensory Blending hears Finnish artist Jimi Tenor and Italian group Aura Safari team up for an impromptu studio shebang in Perugia, Italy, after Tenor's storied but clandestine performance at a Hell Yeah party. Despite no prior connection, the musicians quickly found common ground, forging a vivant fusion of jazz-funk, tropicalia and soul. Tenor's psychedelic style gelled Aura Safari's faster, intuited approach, resulting in such tracks as 'Bodily Synesthesia,' 'Bewitched By The Sea' and 'Lunar Wind', each of which connect seductive grooves and ghost noted keys. Possibly performed live at select events later in the year, the record is a perfect storm of recorded "live feel" Balearica.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: For those familiar with manchester sax player Birchall's previous forays into dub, this album offers a deep dive into the analogue 70s Jamaican dubbing techniques that have defined the genre, paying homage to the trailblazers like King Tubby and Errol Thompson. The source material is heavily percussive, resulting in a collection of dynamic, dubby drum workouts that seamlessly blend live drumming in the Count Ossie style with drum machines that recall Lee Perry's experimental approach. A highly anticipated dub companion to Nat Birchall's acclaimed Dimension of the Drums LP, this continues in a similar spirit of the previous. Drawing inspiration from classic dub albums like Keith Hudson's Pick A Dub and Winston Edwards' King Tubby Meets The Upsetter at the Grass Roots of Dub, Birchall reimagines the tracks with roots dub precision, incorporating fresh horn lines and hand drums to enhance the album's authentic, organic vibe. The LP includes two distinct mixes of a new rhythm track that wasn't part of the original album, adding an extra layer of excitement for listeners. Birchall once again handles all aspects of the albumiplaying instruments, recording, mixing and masteringiensuring a deeply personal touch in every track. Review: Recorded in 2014 but only now seeing the light of day, this long-shelved session unites an exceptional ensemble, including the legendary American jazz alto saxophonist and composer Lee Konitz, the ever-explorative guitarist Bill Frisell, pianist Jason Moran, bassist Thomas Morgan and the rhythmic backbone of drummer Andrew Cyrille. Together, they create a meditative yet dynamic set, balancing composed frameworks with fluid improvisation. The album unfolds with 'Black is All Colors at Once' , where Moran's delicate piano textures meet Bro's shimmering guitar, setting the stage for Konitz's gracefully introspective saxophone lines. Konitz, still remarkably inventive at 86, takes a rare turn on soprano sax for Haiti, a lilting, playful piece that gently sways with a hypnotic ease. 'Milford Sound' honors the avant-garde drumming pioneer Milford Graves with a free-flowing elegance, while 'Pearl River' ventures into abstraction, as Bro and Frisell intertwine their guitars into a rich harmonic fabric. Review: Newly ordained keyboardist Volodja Brodsky, from Estonia, has described his music as an exploration of the transformative power of minimalism, the art form and compositional approach in which he is trained. Brodsky's second LP lacks the contextual elucidations that accompanied the first record that 2024, but we sense that this may be because the career ball is already rolling, and no further explanations may be needed for now. Raindrops is a precipitous record, as Brodsky wrenches piano and vibraphone motifs from romantic scale meanderings we didn't know possible; widescreen voicings and compound intervals help earmark these standout moments. Elsewhere, the mood is downcast, as on 'Fogbound Streets Of Maardu' or 'Raindrops'; the left hand basso is almost always moody in feel, while the right hand always produces tearful and romantic sound.

Drummer Ed Blackwell and bassist Reggie Workman provide a tight, responsive rhythm section, while Stanley Cowell's work on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes adds rich texture to the arrangements. Brown's own composition, 'Vista,' is a stand-out, bringing a blissful vibe, while the album also highlights other great selections, including a warm rendition of Cowell's 'Maimoun' and an introspective, meditative take on Stevie Wonder's 'Visions.' The tracks flow effortlessly, from the evocative 'Maimoun' and 'Visions' to the expansive, peaceful 'Vista,' before moving into the more complex 'Moment of Truth.' With 'Bismillahi 'Rrahmani 'Rrahim' and the intricate 'Djinji' rounding out the album, Brown's final statement for Impulse! remains as emotive as it was upon its release.

His collaboration with the brilliant alto saxophonist Paul Desmond was key to his sound along with the outstanding rhythm section of bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. This collection, featuring tracks like 'The Duke,' 'Mr. Broadway' and 'In Your Own Sweet Way', also offers fresh interpretations of classics like 'Camptown Races' and 'Trolley Song.'
